*NFL = 32 teams split into 2 conferences (AFC & NFC)
*Conference = 16 teams split into 4 divisions (North South East & West)
*The heighest team in each division (based on a win/loss record) automatically makes it into the finals series.
*The four divisions champions are ranked 1 through to 4, determined by their win/loss record, in a standard 'ladder' format
*The remainder of the teams are then added to the ladder, from 5th down to 16th based on their win loss records. (This means that a team may win their division with a 9wins - 7 loss record and place fourth while another team may winn 11 games and only lose 5, but would be placed 5th because they came second in their division. this is done to make sure each division is represented in the final series and to make sure that no one division has all their teams represented.
*Once a ladder has been formed, teams 1 and 2 have a week off while teams 3 hosts team 6, while 4 hosts 5. (Wildcard weekend)
*Team 1 then hosts the lowest winner (idealy team 4) while Team 2 would host the higher winner (Idealy team 3).
*The two winners (Ideally team 1 and 2) play the "Conference Championship" at the highest ranked teams home ground. Since two teams from the same conference cannot play against each other in the superbowl, The conference championship is considered more like a minor grandfinal rather than just a semifinal.
Here is this years competition.

Structural engineering is the art of modelling materials we do not wholly understand, into shapes we cannot precisely analyses so as to withstand forces we cannot properly assess, in such a way that the public at large has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance - (Dr. A. R. Dykes, British Institution of Structural Engineers, 1976)
