TALKING POINTS:

Memorable Match – 5th February 2012

  • The Jets play some of the most fluid and attacking football ever seen in the club, demolishing Sydney 5-2 on their home turf. Goals to Topor-Stanley, Zadkovich, Abbas and a double from Brockie give the Jets their biggest win over Sydney as well as being the first occasion the team scored 5 goals in a match.

General

  • The Jets are currently 10 matches without a win against Sydney. They’ve only achieved 2 draws during that time while they have lost the last 5 matches against Sydney.
  • The Jets have also only scored in one of the last 9 against Sydney. That was a 4-3 loss in Season 2014/15.
  • Sydney currently sit atop the table with 3 wins from their first 3 matches
  • Sydney haven’t conceded a goal in either the FFA Cup or the A-League this year – a run of 7 matches.

Players

  • Alex Brosque has scored 4 goals in his last 3 appearances against Newcastle.
  • Danny Vukovic will make his 35th appearance against the Jets. This is the most of any opposition player.
  • Nigel Boogaard is the first Jets centre back to score in consecutive matches. Should he score this week, he will be the first player to score in 3 consecutive matches since Edson Montano.
  • Former Jet David Carney will return to Newcastle for the first time since his mid-season departure from the club last year.

Newcastle Jets

  • The Jets have remained undefeated after the first 3 matches of a season only once before – 2007/08 when they started with a 5 match streak without loss.
  • If the Jets score this weekend, they will have scored in 8 consecutive A-League matches for the first time since the 2006/07 season, when the team scored in 10 matches in a row.
  • Newcastle have scored 7 goals in the first 3 matches this season – the most in their history. The previous record was 5 in season 2012/13.
  • The Jets have kept Sydney scoreless once in the last 22 matches.

Sydney FC

  • Sydney have never lost against the Jets when they score first.
  • The Jets are currently 284 minutes without scoring against Sydney.

Injuries

  • Newcastle Jets – Daniel Alessi – Knee (Season), Daniel Mullen – Knee (12 weeks), Ben Kennedy – Achilles (Season), Andrew Nabbout – Groin (3 weeks), Lachlan Jackson – Ankle (indefinte)

TALKING POINTS:

Memorable Match – 17th November 2013

  • The first match where the Jets came from behind at half time to win. Brisbane took the lead through a Luke Bratten goal on a soggy afternoon in Newcastle. The second half saw the Jets score two goals through Adam Taggart, with a little help from a large puddle of water, to run out 2-1 winners.

General

  • There has only been one scoreless match between these two teams in the history of the A-League.
  • The Jets last beat Brisbane in February 2014.
  • The Jets are 7383 attendees from having 1.5 million people attend an A-League game at the stadium.
  • Mark Jones and Nick Nick Theodorakopoulos are the only managers in Jets history to draw their opening match.
  • Gary Van Egmond is the only manager to have won his first match against the Roar.

Players

  • Wayne Brown is the 7th Jets player to score on his A-League debut.
  • The last substitute to score for the Jets, Radavan Pavicevic, scored his goal against the Roar.
  • 5 players made their debut for the club last week, the same number as Round 1 in the previous two seasons.
  • Wayne Brown is the 66th player to score for the Jets.

Newcastle Jets

  • The Jets have scored the first goal in their last 3 fixtures.
  • The Jets have won 5 of the 10 fixtures held on a Sunday between these 2 clubs, while 2 of the 3 wins in Newcastle have come on a Sunday.
  • Newcastle have scored a goal in their last 5 games – the longest streak in 2.5 years.

Brisbane Roar

  • Brisbane have scored the first goal in this fixture on 5 of the last 6 occasions.
  • Brisbane have managed to claim 20 points from a losing position against the Jets over the course of the A-League’s history – the most of any team against Newcastle.

Injuries

  • Newcastle Jets Daniel Alessi – Knee (Season), Mateo Poljak – Calf (possible), Morten Nordstrand – Knee (possible), Daniel Mullen – Knee (12 weeks), Ben Kennedy – Achilles (Season), Jason Hoffman – Calf (Unknown)
  • Brisbane Roar

PREDICTION:
After one round, the Jets are already facing a test of their squad depth with Mullen sustaining a serious knee injury while Hoffman and Kokko are also in doubt. The return of Poljak and Nordstrand should help to aleviate the loss.
Jacob Pepper will likely deputise for the suspended Matt McKay in midfield. The socceroos midfielder’s presence will be missed but Pepper will bring energy for the Roar in the middle of the park.
The Jets will look to build upon a solid first performance against Adelaide, but to do so they will need to defy a trend of poor restuls againts the Roar in Newcastle.
With the 1.5 millionth fan at the stadium likely to be in attendance on Sunday, I think the Jets will have enough to get over the line.
Jets 2-1
