Jets superstar Joel Griffiths says the club’s new South Korean recruit has a touch of the Samba about him.
“He actually speaks Portughese which is kinda strange for a South Korean – so he’s able to communicate with [Jets' playmaker] Denni- and he’s about the same size as Denni too,” Griffiths told au.fourfourtwo.com today at the launch of the finals series.
FC Seoul midfielder Song Jin-hyung, a former South Korean youth international, was signed by the Jets last Friday as the side looks ahead to both the finals and season four of the A-League.
According to Griffiths, the 20-year-old looms as a handy acquisition.
“I’d only seen him at one training session but he seemed to be pretty skilful,” he said
Jets coach Gary Van Egmond conceded the club needs to do better in their foreign signings for next season after the disastrous Mario Jardel and misfit Jorge Drovandi both failed to deliver this season.
“It’s an area we need to improve on,” said Van Egmond today. “It’s so important to get that part of the operation right.”

Song Jin-Hyung was training with the Jets yesterday and will be assessed “for a week or 10 days” and has already impressed Gary van Egmond in his initial training session describing him as a typical Korean player who is “very quick and explosive”. He showed some “nice touches” at training.
Song is a 20 year-old attacking midfielder who plays for FC Seoul and has represented his country at the U20 World Cup. He is a free agent and the club is looking into the logistics of getting him out here for the rest of this season, and signing him up for next season as long as van Egmond sees him as a player that he wants to have in the team.
van Egmond was cautious in saying that he doesnt want to “upset the applecart” by bringing in someone so close to the eve of the A-League finals. An international clearance would have to be sought which can take a while to be granted.
He speaks limited english, but van Egmond will sign him as long as he going to be effective in the final third. He would be drafted in this season on an injury waiver for Steve Eagleton.
