Being that the great man Ange Postecoglou is days away from announcing the preliminary 30 man squad for Brazil lets all have a crack at naming the final 23 now and see who gets closest to the mark when he wields the axe and culls the squad.

Figure it would be a bit more interesting before the 30 man squad is named and you can from that maybe work it out. right now it is wide open

PS WLG You should be naming Luca$h in your squad on principles you have stuck by!!!

I was under the assumption Wright can play CB and LB also with McKay could play there if necessary. Also believe the lack of Football will hurt Bresc I think.

Can also play right back and has played in midfield. If we only take Davidson as specialist left back, I think Premy is correct in saying that Wright or McKay would be expected to deputise.

5. DeVere

So you don't want Neill due to how many games he hasn't played in the last year, yet want someone who has played less games. Got it.

8. Aleksandr Jovanovic
9. Bailey Wright

Have you ever watched either of these guys? Also, you ridicule the level that Neill was playing at (Football Championship) yet are happy for a Football League 1 (not to mention an alleged criminal) & K-League player to be in the squad. Got it.

Wright has been confirmed in the 30 man squad. PNE would play the play-off final the day we play south africa should they make it. Would rather him play in a competitive final and meet us in brazil rather than play a nothing friendly and miss some super competitive football.

Have seen Devere play many times in the HAL.

Have also seen a fair bit of Bailey Wright. Keep a close eye on his club and have been following his career for a few years now.

Will admit haven't seen anything of the other bloke but as discussed previously with you we have a depth of talent in this position.

Slight difference between Wright and Luca$h

Bailey has been playing quite regularly all season 40 odd games. Luca$h hasn't been. Difference in levels is irrelevant. Bailey has already played in the Championship level in the past when PNE were in it recently!!!

Also ridiculing Luca$h playing level wasn't the issue. It is more so his lack of actual playing time.

Anyway WLG 30 mins time Ange will announce the squad an officially bring in the new era of your very own avatar(SELECTED BY THE FOZ)!!!!

As for the alleged criminal remarks I will let them slide.

The bloke was arrested and questioned into Match Fixing along with half a dozen of his teammates.

None have been charged.

For all we know the bloke may have done nothing wrong and was arrested by the police as part of their tactics to interview him and put him in a position where he had to co operate.

Doesn't mean he is guilty of anything!!!

I think you will find Ange has to axe 7 of them before they board the plane to Brazil.

The extra numbers are to train in the next few weeks and press for selection until the decision has to be made

Not entirely true from what I have read. They will take 4 stand by players with them from what I understand so I think Biraz is off to Brazil whether he makes the 23 or not. Hence the culling of 3 down to the 27 traveling squad and the later cull of 4 to the 23 man registered to play at the World Cup squad.

edit - I think that's to account for injuries pre WC but post squad announcements.

Young and inexperienced, old and experienced, either way there'll be people retiring from football after the cup with the hidings we cop.

My exposure to the Socceroos was pretty sporadic. I remember watching them play Argentina and thinking "these guys can compete, we aren't hopeless. Wow, Batistuta is pretty good." I remember going to a Socceroo game against Sweden and we seemed pretty hopeless. I remember the Iran campaign, and both Uruguay campaigns thinking "We are good enough to be in this".

For me Guus Hiddink was a revelation. He actually verbalised what I had always felt, that Australia has to find its unique playing style, which is positive and attacking but also incorporates the European skill that migrants had introduced. The first few games under Guus after he took over from Farina took me from "We are good enough to be in this" to "We can actually play FOOTBALL". The style in 2006 was beautiful to watch.

What Guus Hiddink talked about, Postecoglou actually embodies: a greek-Australian who favours the "attacking with skill" style that Australia should adopt. It is mainly for this reason that I am really looking forward to this World Cup, to see Ange put his stamp on the squad.

The second reason is to see the A-League era squad step up. In the past we relied on second generation Aussies from Croation and Italian heritage to make up most of the squad. Kids who developed their skills under the aura of the "old country" through their ethnic NSL clubs. There is nothing wrong with this, but it is more of a historical one time possibility. The post World War II migration and the resultant close feeling of diaspora can't be repeated or replicated.

Now we have the start of a more mainstream process where the non ethnic clubs are supplying the talent. So, even if we don't do well at this World Cup, the change in process is historical and has to be embraced, because that is the way of the future. I love it that I have watched a lot of these guys plying their trade in the A-League.

We are actually quite lucky that the Socceroos will be playing in the World Cup finals through such a seismic change in the culture of Australian football. Bring it on I say.

furns

That will be Birraz's only hope of remaining imo
If Langerak cant recover in time, Birraz stays.
The other three, it will depend who performs in training and if there are any injuries to mid-level players.

I would hazard a guess however that Ange will want to keep the media darling Rogic for that supposed "X-Factor", even though there has been precious little sign of it in at least the last 12 months. Troisi will probably battle it out with Taggz to stay, and if Franjic hadnt been injured I would have bet my house that Wilkshire would have been cut. He will now probably stay to provide cover. Final spot will go to either Luongo or Wright.

I would have bet against you TBH. Who exactly will Wilkshire be covering, if Franjic is injured? Who will play right back if not Franjic?

Also I am genuinely laughing at anyone who thinks a CB will be dropped now. Spira, Wilko, Wright & McGowan are all 100% in the squad of 23, assuming none of them have an injury that would force them out.

Ange will pick Troisi over Taggart if only for the fact he has worked with him at Victory. The experience of heading to Brazil in and of its own will be invaluable to Taggz. Asian Cup he will have a big chance to shine on the International stage

Am I the only one who thinks HOPE SO? If Ange takes him, his entire spiel about taking fit players playing regularly is complete horseshit. It's bad enough that Bresciano is there having played all of FOUR GAMES this entire year but at least he has a massive legacy to back him up and he was never a player who relied on amazing fitness anyway. Rogic managed to play TWO full games for MV, has yet to play a full 90 for the Socceroos and also missed their last 5 games of the club season. People keep talking about Vidosic and Bozanic being dropped but compared to Rogic, they were playing regularly and at a far higher level than he was.

Good. He is just a less talented version of Plan A. Take Taggart, at least he gives us something completely different to Cahill and Kennedy and their aerial prowess.

Drop Langerak, Kennedy, Rogic and McKay. I don't care which of the other 3 GK's goes but Langerak needs a boot up the arse if he wants to ever play for Australia and missing out on a WC squad to two guys who play regularly in the HAL might be it. The other 3, whoo. McKay is shit, don't rate him in the NT at all and the other two aren't fit.

Poses an interesting question - Taggart (and anyone for that matter) now has proof that playing in the A-League can get you selected for International duty. Will he still feel the urgent need to move OS, or be content plying his trade locally for 1 more year?

Obviously, if the club gets an offer that meets the contracted amount then he is off.

Ange has no interest in helping me keep my blood pressure down. He's worse than a woman ffs.

Ange what dafuq are you doing?

Let's go to a WORLD CUP with:
- 1 recognized left back
- 1 recognized right back
- 1 capable centre back
- 1 recognized striker (Taggz, the rest are moreso attacking mids/wide forwards)

This is nearly on par with Bridges re-signing that time for me.

How on gods green earth is Ange able to pre-emptively announce that Lucas will 100% not be in the side, yet sweat on last minute decisions of the likes of Kennedy, Rogic, Wilkshire, Franjic etc with their injuries?

Who dafuq takes 1 right back to a world cup, when that right back has had recent injuries and couldn't even make it through your most recent friendly? As much as I love Franjic to death, this is the stupidest decision in the world. Oh wait, that's right, we have Ryan McGowan who can play right back. McGowan, who was destroyed in our 6-0 game. McGowan, who is 4th choice (yep) in a CSL team.

I am legit crying. I had so, so much more faith in Ange than what he has produced.

Don't get me wrong - I like that the likes of Taggz, Brillante, Troisi, Milligan, etc have been rewarded for their HAL seasons (even though arguably Brattan had a beter HAL season than Milligan & Brillante, but let's not go there). I like that Mat Ryan is being rewarded for an unreal sesaon, which he starts in, with the number 1 spot. Ange has done some great things.

But this apparent vendetta against the old guard, the way he's handled things at times, and this final squad choice is making me cry. This squad setup is worse, I repeat worse, than what GVE left us with. It's worse than the squad Branko vouched his reputation on.

For the record, apart from the first 10 minutes, I couldn't even tell Holger wasn't the coach of the Socceroos still in that South Africa game.

Spain.

LB: Alba (Azpelicueta)

I quite like the squad given who we had available.

I would have liked to see ANY of Og/Neill/that bloke with the hairband for Stockton Sharks/Witches Hat in instead of Wilkinson who I don't think offers anything whatsoever but given the change in guard and the unavailability of Good, I'm not surprised at the exclusions. I wish people like Devere would make smarter career moves... Korea, ffs. Hopefully he sees Spira making the WC squad and realises that being one of the best defenders in the HAL no longer means international oblivion and comes back to push for a spot (preferably with us). Though for players like Zullo and Behich who came back and weren't exactly world beaters, maybe the knowledge that you aren't good enough is enough to warrant bench warming on bigger overseas bucks. Compared to how average they were, Carney would get a NT spot ahead of them both.

I would have liked to see Brillante in for McKay but that's purely selfish, I guess. I also don't rate McKay at all in the NT.

Would obviously prefer Kruse, a fit Rogic, a fit Sarota, a fit Kennedy in there but happy with those who made it in their place.

Was hoping for more analysis on Croatia though. Imo they have the most attacking lineup in the tournament. They'll probably play 4231 and all 6 of the top men are lethal. I agree Croatia will be a huge test, because as Chile, Netherlands & Spain will seemingly use our game as a Goal Differential battle more than anything, so how we fare against a pure attacking team pre - tournament will give a lovely indication on (a) how our defence can shape up against world class attackers, and (b) how our attackers can exploit on the counter against teams bombing forward against us.

Nice article again parksey. Wd.

Was hoping for more analysis on Croatia though. Imo they have the most attacking lineup in the tournament. They'll probably play 4231 and all 6 of the top men are lethal. I agree Croatia will be a huge test, because as Chile, Netherlands & Spain will seemingly use our game as a Goal Differential battle more than anything, so how we fare against a pure attacking team pre - tournament will give a lovely indication on (a) how our defence can shape up against world class attackers, and (b) how our attackers can exploit on the counter against teams bombing forward against us.

yeah i'm gonna do that after the game as i genuinely have no idea how this australian team will set up against croatia in terms of tactics.

honestly, i thought we were brilliant. i was so happy with how we came back from 2 goals down and feel like we were a good chance of jagging the draw. that said, i was well aware that a sucker punch was one mistake away.

ange really is a good coach, game plan went almost perfectly and i think would have come off if franjic hadn't been injured (suspect timmy would have been brought off for taggz with 10 to go, chile were pretty much out on their feet, but so was timmy)

good to see security is run by the same guys that check the RBB for flares as they come in.

Just got back to hotel

We won the Chileans respect the difference was the finishing

We wasted shit load hey put 4 on target all night

Considering our technical deficiencies Ange got most of his decisions right
The **** ups were the inexperienced defence who for the mmost part were fantastic but made some glaring mistakes that were poor

Ange did **** up with not putting Taggart on. We had plenty of times where Timmy got the ball but he has no speed. Need the quicker man as the Chileans were slow

Song of the night at fulltime

Where 3rd in the group how shit must Spain be where 3rd in the group

Atmosphere top notch I hate to say it but better than the day Griffo scored the winning goal in the GF against he gypos

Chileans were fantastic and very humble and respective at FT

If there is something that we have an advantage over most countries in this world cup, is never say die attitude, and with Ange i think he's really pressed that into the boys here is to show the mentality.

Jedinak was pretty poor in all honesty, he needs to show why hes being made a captain in the next 2 games.

I honestly thought Davidson and Wilkinson were our best, Davidson did well to not let Sanchez run those channels and got forward well too.

Strangely enough i think our RB situation is the current problem now, whereas it used to be the LB area.

Can safely say i think the boys did the Nation proud this morning. And probably won the hearts of many others watching the world cup across the globe

Really impressed with the response from the team after a nervous start. Don't think we deserved a draw, but 3-1 was a bit rough.

Pretty happy to be honest.
I think a draw would've been a fair result and a good one at that.
After our initial 20 minutes of frailty, I thought we played well. We had an obvious Gameplan of target Timmy's head with early balls. Did well to get back into it. After half time I said, we'd level it at 2-2 or we'd concede in Injury time and vwullah.

I thought our defence did reasonably well once they settled.
Jedinak wasn't his best. Bresh did reasonably well. Oar didn't play the best, take a touch son. Troisi was rubbish.
Franjic did well for me. It was his big tackle and cross that lead to the goal. We were dying for a big tackle at that kind of inspired for want of better word. Cahill was soooo close to being sent off. His dissent could have seen his second yellow so often. He was excellent today in terms of giving his all. Would love to have a out and out striker that can turn and have a dig easily. There were times when Cahill and bresh to a degree could've loaded up bit didn't.
And on leckie, he looked a bit shaky at first but as the game wore on he was getting better and better. Should've at least got a shot away on his long counter run.

All in all, a good effort against a chile team that is rated quite high. We made them look pretty average in the second half.

For the first 12mins we were chasing the game but Chile never looked like scoring.

There first two shots came from our ineptness. Both ended up in the net.

Ffs Ryan had little to do most of the night.

Five things from……Chile 3 Australia 1

We should’ve all packed up and turned off the TV long before this game started. Surely nothing could beat THAT game and you could imagine ITV’s producers trying to think of ways to suggest BBC’s coverage of the Spain v Netherlands game was nothing compared to what we could expect from this game. Alas I’d failed to find any Chilean beer in SE9 so the Beer World Cup would take a brief diversion for the game in the exact centre of South America in Cuiabá.

1. Lucas Neill – when Panini brought out their sticker album for the World Cup they had included Lucas Neill. This shocked me in two ways. Firstly the horrible memories of seeing a player who makes BFF look like he’s been at Weightwatchers huff and puff around Upton Park. Secondly, up until a few weeks ago he was still registered to play in England, with Watford. Must have been a bad season for the Hornets. Good old Lucas was on an eye watering £60k per week six years ago at Upton Park.

2. Globe trotters – the Australian squad play in thirteen different countries. That takes some beating and may explain the fact that for the vast majority of the game they played as complete strangers, often bring eight men behind the ball in the final third yet Chile still dominated possession – with 74% of the ball at half-time.

3. Rubbish use of advertising – Gol.mcd.com? What’s that all about? As anyone who works in the domain name world will know, the new .futbol domain is available AND McDonalds own it. So why not use it? Relevant, catchy and easy to remember…Rainham Steel, Rainham Steel, Rainham Steel.

4. A Chilean player called Gary – Seriously? That’s like having someone born in Nottingham called Marco. I can only assume he was named after a famous Gary from the late 1980′s. There could only be one man – Gary Coleman from Different Strokes or perhaps Gary Lineker after his Golden Boot performance in Mexico in 1986…which was ten months before he was born…Interesting.

5. Thank God for goal line technology - Just four games in and FIFA can breathe a sigh of relief when Wilkinson clears off the line and the referee gets a message to say “no goal”. Goal shouted the Chilean fans, who according to certain newspapers all looked like this (http://m.cdn.blog.hu/va/valogatott/image/csajok/chile%20football%20fan.jpg). No goal said GoalControl thanks to their secret eye in the net.

The Beer World Cup

With a lack of Chilean beer in the World Cup fridge we had to turn to Current Mrs Fuller’s wine cellar (cupboard under the stairs). And what did we find? A cheeky Chilean Casillero del Diablo, the official wine of Manchester United no less, and a Hunter Valley white. One glass of each? Go on then…

Chilean Red 2 Australian White 2

The fact we hadn’t chilled the white counteracted the fact the red hadn’t had time to “breathe”. Even so it was a tight run contest with nothing coming between the two apart from a bowl of spicy Jalapeño pretzel pieces at half time. A bit like watching an episode of Emmerdale when you are in a Bond marathon…it’s OK but you’d rather go back to seeing 007. Normal service will be resumed tomorrow.

adidas – 3pts

I honestly don't think we'll do as bad as Spain did. I attribute that too a really bad day for Spain more so then how good the Dutch are. I'd say we'll lose about 3-1, but I think it'll be a game similar to the Chile one in that the scoreline will not reflect how much of a fight we put up

spain tried to play their usual high line and got caught out time and again by the dutch. we will definitely have to sit deeper than spain did if we want to limit the threat of robben getting in behind.

The 2 Spanish centre halves don't know how to mark or defend properly. For their clubs Pique would hardly have to make a tackle as Barca always have the ball and Mashcerano does the dirty work and Ramos just kicks people, lumps the ball up field and gets sent off for Madrid.
