I’ll be happy to see us start winning, hell even scoring or just competing consistently, but we seem to have taken this attitude that every game we have been playing in the opposition is “further ahead than us” I just hope we haven’t decided to wait until half way through the season before we start taking HAL games seriously. The attitude to the FFA Cup game is what really pissed me off, we never even looked like approaching it seriously, and it reflected in the prep & play of the team. This is a competition that is trying to get off the ground, and was a chance to have additional games and possibly silverware at the end of it but we just brushed it off as nothing more than a training run that the club could make money off, contrast that to the attitude of other clubs who treated it seriously & got results.

I'd be happy if we lost all our games but still won the Grand Final.
It's the big games that count.

Big Phil could well be a tactical genius here.

Usually we forget the ineptness of our past performances then storm through pre season and approach the season with optimism that the corner has been turned and then we are found wanting in Rd 1 before a couple of victories see the hopes built up before the mediocrity sets in and despite the occasional performance where it looks like it may come together we still finish outside the playoff zone.

Phil in his infinite wisdom is stripping any hope of optimism of us early. Just expect to be shit from Pre Season to Round 27.

The whole glass is half full or half empty conundrum.

Instead of thinking it is half empty we will think a couple of wins will see it half full as we have accepted being shite earlier

Either that or he is trying to lull the Gypos into a sense of complacency Rd 1 to ambush them

****ing Genius

Watching the 5 minute video isnt the greatest way to assess 90minutes, but i thought the way goodwin ddidnt shoot but tried to find a player in the box seemed very much like he had instructions to play the pass.

We also seemed to be sending them wide and not letting them come down the middle (despite being raped down the flanks)

if Phil is working on things in these games then the results genuinely don't matter.

Would much rather be losing in the pre-season as a result of trying to sort the team come the actual season then trying to work out the problems during the actual season

Would much rather be losing in the pre-season as a result of trying to sort the team come the actual season then trying to work out the problems during the actual season

Problem is our coach & club have been saying these sorts of things for years now and still struggle to have an effective game plan come round 1. We always seem to get a couple of lucky results and then the fade out begins, which should be what your Perth's and Brisbane's should be encountering if they are already taking games seriously, or maybe that's why we never fire, a poor attitude from the outset infects the season before it even begins & we are left chasing the tail of the competition.

Forever 7th!

So let me get this right.

The extent of our pre season is wins against our Yoof team and dishing out a hiding to Weston Bears U22-s U19-s etc and we are convincingly beaten by our HAL alumni each game we play then and every other time we have played anyone outside the NNSW NPL we have failed to score???:woo:

So we have what 27 weeks coming up of being inept to endure?? :sigh:

Pretty decent result against Juve.

Yes, I know it wasn't their first team.

JOEL Griffiths expects a much improved performance against Sydney FC in the second game of the Townsville Football Cup tonight, but the striker admits the Jets are a long way from the finished product.

Griffiths will wear the captain’s armband ABOUT ****ING TIME in the absence of Kew Jaliens, who picked up a knock in the 4-0 loss to A-League champions Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

The Sky Blues, who like the Jets have a new coach and turned over personnel, opened the round robin with a 3-1 victory over former A-League club North Queensland Fury and present a different challenge to the Roar.

‘‘Sydney have a lot of good players and again it will be tough,’’ Griffiths said. ‘‘We have a lot of players coming back and a lot of players who are nowhere near where they have to be in fitness. We will get better, that is for sure.

‘‘We have to be hungrier. That starts from the front.’’

The Jets had no answer to the mobility, ball movement and defensive pressure of the Roar, who have retained most of their championship squad.

The magnitude and the manner of the loss left Griffiths doubting the team and himself. WHY??The rest of them are just shit ****s Griff You are still a god

‘‘I was questioning whether we have the right players, whether we have enough players, if I’m still up to playing at this level,’’WHY?? The rest of them are just shit ****s Griff You are still a god
the 35-year-old former Golden Boot said.

‘‘It took me two days to come to grips with it. Just the type of attitude we need

‘‘You have to put things into perspective. We were not up to the Roar standard. We definitely have the potential to get there but at the moment we are a long way off.

‘‘There are a lot of things we have to work on and we are working our hardest to rectify that. We need to get that winning mentality back.

‘‘It will come.

‘‘Brisbane, in particular, are already there. They can only get so much better. We have a lot of scope for improvement.’’

Griffiths partnered Jeronimo Neumann up front in a 4-4-2 formation against the Roar.

The Argentinian, who is only a week back into full training, drops to the bench tonight with coach Phil Stubbins likely to switch to a 4-3-3.

Adelaide teenage triallist Allan Welsh will cover for Jaliens alongside Adrian Madaschi in the heart of defence. Taylor Regan will play in a midfield screening role in front of the back four.

‘‘It will be a good test and it’s a good opportunity for players,’’ Griffiths said.

‘‘We had a good training session today.

‘‘It is a lot clearer now with what is needed in defence.’’

Ecuadorean striker Edson Montano, who arrived in Newcastle last week, will again come off the bench.

‘‘He looks like a guy who can hold the ball up well,’’ Griffiths said.

‘‘It will take time for him to find his feet. I, for one, know what it is like to go to a foreign country and fit in.

‘‘He will get time. That is one thing we have.’’

Jets (likely): Mark Birighitti; Sam Gallaway, Allan Welsh, Adrian Madaschi, David Carney; Taylor Regan, Jacob Pepper, Jonny Steele; James Virgili, Joel Griffiths, Craig Goodwin

Hopefully a few issues will be ironed out here by Stubbins

Firstly Griff should be given his rightful role of captain and this glaring oversight is corrected.

Secondly hopefully Birraz doesn't let 4 in and we can settle all disputes as to who is the Number 1 Keeper

And if you're going to answer with something like "obviously the coaches assess that" then I'll say "who, like Ange and Gombau?" And then say something like "so who are you guys to be demanding for the guy who was given our number 1 jersey to be dropped?"

haha. you clearly havent been following my responses to the BK hate for a number of years - but i dont expect anyone too (its my own personal vigil)

All im saying in this whole debate is that both players need to be held to the same standard and assessed without bias.
BK is till the victim of close minded ill informed judgements from a few seasons ago. and birraz seems to be able to do no wrong in the eyes of the BK haters.

Both make great saves, both make **** ups.

BK's saves are often ignored, his ****s ups highlighted
Birra's saves are highlighted and his **** ups are often ignored.

when we lost 4-0 v roar many (mainly on facebook) called for his head despite not seeing anything but the 5 minutes highlight reel.
it's only fair that the same same simplistic analysis of a goalkeeper's performance be applied to all keepers at the club........ or not at all........ I'd actually arge the latter.

for the record, i think Birraz is a better keeper.

pv4
28-08-2014, 11:54 AM
My issue years back with BK was simple - he hadn't proven to me he was number 1 HAL worthy.

Which Biraz has.

Yes they have both made great saves and yes they both had made howler mistakes, but overall the quality of Biraz has clearly outshone BK on most days, as seen by you admitting Birraz is a better keeper.

We as fans get limited exposure to actually assess the form of each player, as we obviously only get to see one play a week. My cheeky comment about the 4nil v Roar was purely to have a shot at you armchair critics who will yap on about form all the time yet not ever have the chance to properly assess, and compare, the form of the two. And that isn't just a case of Biraz v BK, it's keepers all over the world.

All you BK lovers, or Biraz haters, need to let our best keeper play and be happy that we have such a good keeper on our books. The more you snipe Biraz, the more perhaps unwarranted BK sniping happens.

This is the problem with the club... we cry about how bad we are but we refuse to accept a player like Regan is not up to standard because "He is so newy" or some shite.
He is an below average player who does give his all but lets face it, its meant to be professional sport not U/7s, going out there, trying hard and doing your best is not a reason to be signed.

Reegz has some serious technical problems when it comes to passing.

Never are the opposition in two minds about whether or not Reegz is about to pass.

Reegz always takes this little stutter step just before he passes - and as a result the opposition can either intercept or place a crap load of pressure on the Jets player the pass was meant for.

Other than that though Reegz can be a wonderful defender and you can never doubt his effort.

Problem is that outside of Carney and Steele we really have got few guys I would trust as our LB. Goodwin is good for one game a season and nothing more, Gallaway is currently useless and in the glimpses I've seen of him this off-season Gallagher may very well top him as the worst in our squad.

At this point the best thing for the Jets to do may be to try and have Hoole play at RB and see if Neville can be our LB or vice versa.

Sorry to be that guy... but i just didnt like him!
Technically could have been a great player, attitude was good too, speed was his major downfall.
That is the reason he gave away so many fouls, not because he was "having a go".

I certainly am not one of the haters, but to put him up there with Ljubo, you are absolutely dreaming!

North Queensland triallists Braedyn Crowley and Kevin Fraser will receive game time for the Jets tonight.

"We'll have a look at them," Stubbins said. It's partly a football thing but also about doing the right thing for the game up here. They've looked after us really well and this is a way we can repay that."
Stubbins has already fielded three triallists in Newcastle's first two trials in Townsville, former Adelaide youth team defender Allan Welsh, Manly United attacker Brendan Cholakian and South Melbourne midfielder Iqi Jawadi.

He said all three had been impressive but Welsh appears the most likely to be offered a contract with Newcastle.

Considering how shitful our pre season and form is why in ****s name are we giving a run to these 2 blokes?? Surely the useless ****s who are paid to play for us can actually put in a shift today and try and find some form confidence match fitness etc so we may actually be able to muster a half decent challenge come the HAL??

Our responsibility isn't to provide goodwill to the football community in NQ by giving 2 blokes from that area a run if we have no intention of signing them.

What are the other useless ****ers in our squad doing up there if they ain't ****ing playing??

It is like a daily dose of new levels of ineptness from our club these days

At least you can say that we put out the 'best' squad we had given the amount of injuries that we have against the two A-League teams, so if we had to do something like this I'm happy that we at least made the right decision to do so against the local team.

Jaliens has picked up a knock so we are really down to 20 in the squad

Take out the 3 existing trialists and that is still 17 blokes who are full time professionals at the club.

Surely they can cover things anyway and then add in the 3 existing trialists???

Townsville Cup Review

Positives
The intensity of the start vs Brisbane Roar
Players being played in other positions that is not their normal (positive being that it is being done in pre-season rather than season proper)
Looked fired up to play Sydney
Braedyn Crowley - & another triallist
Edson Montano

The start of the match vs Roar was great. Jets held them in their half and Brisbane were struggling to get out. When they did though we went 1-0 down.

Goodwin/Carney both having a go at the left back and left wing role with Carney even playing right wing vs NQAS. The other noticeable position change was Regan into midfield. That did not go down so well. He played there vs Brisbane and Sydney and did not look like he knew where he was supposed to be, or what he was supposed to be doing at times. He looked lost. Played central defence vs NQAS and it was a much improved personal performance.

The boys looked like they wanted to beat Sydney. Totally different to the game vs Brisbane. They looked much more positive. They had a huddle pre-game vs Sydney and NQAS where as vs Brisbane they just did their own thing. They didn't let Sydney walk over them and it was a good game to watch.

The triallists. In particular Braedyn Crowley. If no one knows who he is, he is a Northern Fury player who was asked to play for the Jets as a trial vs NQAS. He came on for the last 20 minutes. He is quick, hungry, he broke the defence a few times, wasn't greedy, he gave it a good crack for his 20 minutes and whilst i wouldn't say sign him due to those 20 minutes, he would certainly be worth having more of a look at. He backed up in Brisbane the following day for Northern Fury and scored their goal in a 1-1 draw with Brisbane Olympic. Another guy who caught my eye vs Brisbane Roar was #14. Now i'm not sure who he was but for me he looked the goods. I think he was a trialist, i didn't recognize him. He is skillfull and quick. He is probably a little shorter than Jeronimo and similar build. He played right wing. He would of been my pick for man of the match from the Jets perspective.

Edson Montanao looks as if he will be good. Its only early obviously but he impressed me. Comparing him with Heskey. Solid build like Heskey but not as big. Holds the ball up well, maybe not as good as Heskey but still good. He is alot more mobile than Heskey so you can expect a lot more movement. Good in the air. Powerful shot. Lets hope he dos the business.

Negatives
Poor performance after Brisbanes first goal
Definsive unit non existant
Shooting ability/lack of wanting to shoot
Rough challenges

Although there was a positive start, after Brisbane's counter attack first goal we should have been 2-0 down shortly after. The Jets were generally back all over the park with the odd and rare bit of good play. I hate to say it but i wondered once or twice whether we were just bending over and copping what Brisbane had to dish out. Some individuals were good though there was no team play. Griffo and Jeronimo hardly seen the ball as our furthest 2 men forward. Only critiscm i can really give those 2 (considering their large uninvolvement) is they could have dropped deeper to get the ball, moving left and right was fine but they never droped any deeper to go looking for the ball (eg Berisha).

The area which needs most attention in the back line. Forget who is our starting goalkeeper. It doesn't matter if Birrighitti starts or Kennedy starts, if that defensive unit does not work together we are going to concede a large amount of goals this year. Even if we had the best goalkeeper in the world, we will concede alot. Gallaway needs to go, Neville right back, Carney/Goodwin left back and your centre backs you can choose from Jaliens, Madaschi or Regan (anyone else??). They all individually defended well for most parts, but its a team game and not one of them kne what the other was doing at any time. Playing out of the back, unless they sort their shit out has to go. Its a sexy way to play football but ours version of playing out of the back is very unnatractive and threatened to cost us goals, and on one occasion did (vs Sydney). Improvement needs to be made further up the field than the back line as well in terms of defence.

Shooting ability seemed less than satisfactory. More so the want to shoot. Biggest example of this is Goodwin. As some one stated, he had a perfect opportunity to shoot (i had a good angle of this) but instead passed a harder ball into the box and lost possesion as a result. Apart from that alot of our shots were off target.
There were a few rough tackles in the game. Take a bow Jeronimo and Gallaway. I think Jeronimo got caught up in the heat of passion in the game and lost his head, something which may need looking at considering it is only pre season. I don't know what the hell Gallaway was thinking with his 2 penalties. 2 penalties for the exact same thing. I don't understand why he did it, i don't understand what these peope at the Jets see in him. Enough said.

As for formations i never really took much notive untill it was asked what formation we were playing vs NQAS. It seemed to me we were playing a 4-4-1-1 formation and about 15 minutes later i cold only see 3 staying back so it seemed we changed to something like a 5-3-2 with 2 wing backs.

At the end of the day my opinion is we have the players to give this competition a real shake, but we don't have the team yet (we have a team of champions, but not a champion team). Team play needs to be massively improved by round 1 otherwise we run the risk of leaving it too late untill we are ready to push.

Anything else you guys want my opinion on?

Mudgee kickoff time would be nice

I advocated for a pre-season game in Mudgee a couple of years ago. Really happy to see it happening as I played my junior soccer out there, travelling 1 1/2 hours to Dubbo every second week for the away game.

My fear is that it was still a Mariners initiative not the Jets.

With them having a pre-season camp in Lismore they are really trying to create a solid presence in NNSW and central-western NSW (Bathurst, Orange, Mudgee, Dubbo, etc.). The Jets need to have a more active presence in these areas and not give up supporter territory so easily. A lot of people from out west end up going to Uni in Newcastle and so there is a strong enough link to create a fan-base out there.

Hopefully this trip opens the club's eyes to the potential out there.

If you caught the footage of this it was something to behold. Tripped over the ball no more than 2 or 3 yards out from an open goal. Ronnie Rosentahl springs to mind

Goodwin will be playing npl soon, very soft

Partly true:
Central Coast LGA has the 4th most homes available to access the NBN but the take up rate is currently less than 1% on account of the locals refusing to pay that sort of money to watch Ray Dinneen read the news.

Nice Work WLG

MFKS
12-09-2014, 08:46 AM
JETS coach Phil Stubbins is poised to unleash a three-pronged strike force of Edson Montano, Jeronimo and Joel Griffiths in tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Wellington at Magic Park.

Stubbins will finalise his 16-man squad after today’s final ball-work session but indicated new recruits Montano and Jeronimo and veteran Griffiths would be deployed up front, with Marcos Flores to make his first appearance for Newcastle off the bench, 10 months after the former Central Coast star had a knee reconstruction.

Griffiths and Montano both scored for Newcastle during the Townsville Cup tournament two weeks ago.

Stubbins said he was confident there would be more goals as his new-look team’s cohesion grew.

‘‘All the top teams in the A-League, they’ve got real competition at the pointy end,’’ he said.

‘‘The only way to be challenging those teams is to have depth and players competing for their positions.

‘‘Not everyone can be in the first team every week, but if you have an environment where everyone is pushing each other for selection, I think it augurs well for the season ahead.’’

Stubbins said Montano was ‘‘just starting to find his legs’’ but was hopeful the Ecuadorean international could ‘‘put on a show for the supporters’’ in tomorrow’s trial, which doubles as Newcastle’s members day.

‘‘He’s three weeks fit,’’ Stubbins said.

See your ad here

‘‘If you take into account everyone else has been training for 11 or 12 weeks, he’s got some catching up to do to get to the level we think he is capable of.

‘‘We’ll try to get as much as we can out of Montano in terms of minutes, and hopefully come round one he’s ready to go.’’

The coach was undecided about what position would best suit Jeronimo, who scored 16 goals in two seasons with Adelaide.

‘‘If we go with a 4-4-2, Jeronimo will probably fulfil one of those striker’s roles,’’ Stubbins said. ‘‘If it’s a 4-3-3, he’d play in a wide area, although he can also play behind the striker.

‘‘He’s a guy who comes with a bit of versatility to the range of positions he can play.’’

Stubbins said Newcastle still had a number of players unavailable because of injury, including centre back Adrian Madaschi, Mitch Cooper, Andrew Hoole and Billy Celeski.

Rookie defender Allan Welsh, who agreed yesterday to a one-year deal with Newcastle, is also out because he is moving from Adelaide.

Stubbins said tomorrow’s result would not be crucial, but he hoped to see improvement on Newcastle’s losses to Brisbane (4-0) and Sydney (4-2) in Townsville.

‘‘We had eight or nine of our squad missing in Townsville ... for us to get carried away with results at this point would be premature,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re still trying to build and get our injured players back to full fitness.

‘‘Until we get to that point, it’s a bit of a difficult position for us.’’

Considering the trials are a chance to push for HAL selection surely the bloke should be doing the moving at a time that doesn't effect his chances of getting a game for the club??

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Whose to say Stubbins didn't say to him "go get yourself sorted, there's still some pre-season games to go". And besides, do we really expect he'll be pushing for a start?

No point in reading into essentially one line in an article. I get the feeling you're just looking for any chance to stick the knife in.

I don't need to look to stick the knife in most times and I ain't looking here.

I just find the professionalism this club deploys at times to be bizarre. I would expect all our players who are fit to be available for selection and not packing house 2000 miles away as this should be done when it doesn't effect season preparations. At present I have a degree of apathy towards our club that is building as I ain't seeing much I like that better days are coming. I actually feel we had a better squad and things looked rosier at the end of last season under InZane. So far our new coach has come in we have poleaxed the squad and removed 8-10 players and the new recruits ain't showing much signs of being any better at all.

Early days I know but our preparation has been piss poor and we stand to fail badly if things do not turn around

How is it not the clubs fault??

The club is responsible for whatever media they provide to the fans of the club. Anything good bad ugly etc is down to what they provide.

Also may I point out the club also have other means such as their website facebook page twitter etc that they have control over what messages get out

Now if you still wish to blame it all on the Herald then who's fault is it that the relationship is sour?? Considering there is 1 TV station in town 1 newspaper and a couple of radio stations you would think it would be a given for a competent organisation to have exceptional relationships with the media as then they basically control the level of publicity that costs them nothing they receive and keep the negative press to the bare minimum.

No these issues wouldn't be the clubs doing would they??

MFKS, I'm of the opinion that it's time to cut the admin a bit of slack. Tinks wants out. I expect that front office professionalism is no longer his priority. It's great that they at least have started the supporter forum. That is a massive step forward on anything that has happened to date.

As far as admin is concerned it's a sinking ship. As seen with the HSG takeover, they installed their own people. I'd be getting out now if I felt I was in a replaceable position and having a continuous job was essential to my family.

People complaining about losing their grandstand seats amongst other things need to just wait until a new owner is found. We are in caretaker mode, but at least the squad seems to have some pretty decent quality in it. On the park is my main concern.

We're looking ok. Open at the back on the counter with the pace of Brockie and burns. We 're applying a lot of midfield pressure. Nev looking solid. Kew playing lots of diagonal and long balls. Gallagher doing alright. Carney ok but welcome exposed down his side.

Kanta is passing accurately...to any player wearing yellow. Pepper having a good game and is lively. Steele is fast becoming my face player for the coming season. He's gotva great touch, lots of effort and pressures really well.

Griff doing well. Jeronimo doing ok - struggling a bit on the right. Montano is strong and physical but with a good touch. More fitness and I think we've got a player there.

There's goals in this game. Nix have had chances. They look a bit more cohesive going forward where we are getting a bit bogged down working it out from the back.

All Hail Stubbins

We may not get the spoon and be ten points adrift by Xmas

We have a problem at left back cause Carney ain't that useful and to me looked like he has been in a good paddock.

Kanta is a ****ing problem though the 2 challenges were ****ing stupid and deserving.

Chillis goal would have been interesting if the Nix keeper hadn't of slipped half a second before Chilli shot.

Flowers with a great through ball.

Got to love Griff. Bloke does his gasket at the ref after a tackle is ruled no foul and he loses his boot. Griff then runs around for 30 seconds with the boot in hand before launching in with a Kevin Muscat special to get the time to out his boot back on whilst the ref is carding him

Disagree with the member re Carney, Thought he combined well with Johny " The Real deal " Steele. Steele's workrate i thought was good. Really looking forward too seeing a fit Monty, Just might have jagged a quality player there. Great touch from Flores for the second goal.

All in all i thought we played with a lot more intent and when we did knock the ball around we were not doing it just for the sake of the stats or to keep a pubic haired muppet happy but looked to be positive with it.

The second tackle in particular was a shocker. No need for that at that point of the game, especially given Wellington weren't exactly attacking our goal at the time.

It has nothing to do with Carneys abilities to combine in attack with anyone. The bloke is quite competent as an attacking player it is defensively which is the issue. To me he looked exactly what he is a bloke who ain't a full back playing there. Defensively he gets caught out and will prove he is a liability.

Would prefer Gallaway at left back than him. At least Galloway ain't gonna get raped defensively every game even if he contributes less than zero in attack

Overall I thought it was a decent performance
Neither side had too many chances, there were a lot of fouls.

Stubbins tactics - quite direct at times and tried to play quickly, but sometimes had more patient build up utilising dribbling strengths of players. Full backs played high and wide in attack and the formation was quite compact and narrow in defence. The players seemed to challenge for most balls in midfield in defence which lead to fouls and cards.

If we were behind other HAL clubs a couple of weeks ago in Nth Qld then surely the games against Phoenix and Gypos have not exactly seen us set the world on fire enough to be considered caught up

Is it just me or does it seem bizarre that our pretty average pre season sees us finished with quality opponents so far out (3 weeks before season KO) and all we have left now is a week of training a game against the Young Socceroos which lets face it will not be at 100% intensity and 2 weeks more of training and Shirts and Skins matches at Ray Watt before Rd 1 and the most important game of the ****ing season arrives??

If we were behind other HAL clubs a couple of weeks ago in Nth Qld then surely the games against Phoenix and Gypos have not exactly seen us set the world on fire enough to be considered caught up

"work in progress"????

We're aiming to be in good form for our first home game.

Don't forget that with the FFA Cup, it would have been difficult to line up opponents without knowing how we or other A-League clubs would progress

we could have organised a game against Wanderers or someone as soon as they got knocked out

I take it you didn't get the email outlining the other matches they have lined up.
