From what I saw, he has no touch, looks clumsy with the ball and his fitness isn't fully up to par yet. In fairness he's been training for a week so his fitness will be up, but the dude looks woeful and a part from making some half clued in runs off the ball really doesn't seem like he's gonna improve very much.

What I will say however in his defence, is look at the team around him. Without Bolt, mariners were still a good bet next to Wello to be wooden spooners and with Bolt nothing changes, they still look like wooden spooners but with a small draw card. He's surrounded by a shit team so naturally he will only look so good, not saying he'd look great in whoever the best looking team in the league is right now, but it's not gonna help him

Out of curiosity this is a serious question that seems to be ignored with the Bolt circus

Any foreigner who comes to work here in Oz requires a Work Visa

Can someone explain how Usain Bolt got one??

If he was here for Athletics than understandable
If he was here for a marketing campaign as he has done for Optus and Coles can understand as he is a Celebrity etc

He isnt a footballer so cant use that as his reason for being here

Exactly how did he get a Visa ??

Also how is he going to be indefinitely on trial??

These visas are time limited

Exactly how have the Gypos got him a Visa that is like a pack of Tim Tams that never run out has me beat

Kossie saying that if the Nix are having their licence questioned than so should the Gypo's, fair point really!

https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/a-league/john-kosmina-queries-how-much-the-mariners-want-to-be-in-the-aleague-says-the-club-should-have-to-justify-its-licence/news-story/7608197db719d079fc3d09fabb764a6e

John Kosmina queries how much the Mariners want to be in the A-League, says the club should have to justify its licence

Former Adelaide and Sydney coach John Kosmina has queried how much the Mariners’ management want to be in the A-League, and says the club should have to justify its licence in the competition.
Central Coast have recorded the worst start to a season in the A-League’s history, taking just two points from its opening eight matches.

After the Mariners’ loss to Wellington, coach Mike Mulvey said he would now turn to young players.

Kosmina said the Mariners needed to make a decision on “what sort of club” they wanted to be — and whether they would properly represent the Central Coast.

“For Mike Mulvey, he came out in the press today, I think it was, and said ‘it’s time to throw in the young guys,’” Kosmina said on Fox Sports’ Sunday Shootout.

“I mean, that’s a big statement to make. It’s a slap in the face for the players that are there now because basically, he’s signed, he’s brought most of these guys to the club — the Aiden O’Neills and Mike McGlincheys and players like that (and) you can see they’re not — they’re struggling — they’re not really playing all that well, they’re certainly not playing to their abilities.

“And I look at the Mariners and I said last week, the place is becoming a graveyard and alright, that may have been a bit harsh but the fact is, the Mariners actually have to make a decision now — and this is a management thing, it’s got nothing to do with the football — about what sort of team, what sort of club they want to be.

“Are they going to represent the Central Coast?

“They want to talk about bringing youngsters in — Mulvey said earlier in the season, ‘it’s great, we’ve put good youth coaches in, we’re going to develop kids.’

“That’s all well and good but Lachie Wales is a local boy and he’s at Melbourne City and I’ve heard it was only for something like $10,000.”

Club great Daniel McBreen said the Mariners’ failure to keep local talent like Wales and Trent Buhagiar went against the idea of bringing young players through the club.

“Well they had Danny De Silva there, young guy there, they had Trent Buhagiar there who’s a local young boy, he’s gone as well,” he said on Fox Sports’ Sunday Shootout.

“So that’s a bit going against the grain to say ‘we’re going to bring young players through’ and then they just let them go to another club. Well start keeping them, then.”

Kosmina said the Mariners, who were one of the league’s inaugural clubs, couldn’t afford to “get comfortable”, despite the lack of relegation as a threat for underperforming.

“Management need to make a decision about whether they actually really want to be in the A-League and be in it seriously because … there’s no promotion and relegation, so teams get comfortable,” he said.

“But the Mariners can’t afford that. There’s too much history in that club, you (McBreen) won a grand final with them, Lawrie McKinna has been in grand finals with them before that and did a great job of building the team into the community there.”

The Mariners have consistently identified as a community club that can compete with bigger sides.

But in recent years, they have struggled to keep pace with the rest of the league — and McBreen said the Central Coast community was starting to “disengage” with the club.

“You talk about the community — it has always been a community club, always, from the start,” McBreen said.

“Now I’m talking to people down there now and I see it all over Twitter and everything, the community is starting to disengage completely because they’re just saying ‘well why do we come in year after year, we say “oh, things are gonna change this year” and every year the same thing.’

“There’s not really a great investment in players, there doesn’t seem to be … this is what people are saying out there, it doesn’t feel like they want to put a team out there that actually really cares or wants to give it a shake.

“That’s what the people out there are saying and they are starting to go ‘well why should we just keep turning up and give our money?’

“Well, they need to put a team on the park that makes people want to go and watch them and actually can perform and win games.”

Wellington Phoenix’s future in the A-League is contingent on the club meeting certain targets and expectations.

Kosmina said the Mariners should be under similar scrutiny — and if they couldn’t meet those “parameters”, their licence should also come under pressure.

“You know, if Wellington Phoenix have to live up to certain expectations in terms of maintaining their licence, so do the Mariners,” he said.

“And if they don’t meet those parameters, maybe they might have to hand back their licence in a year or two as well, for another club to come in.

“And you’ve got to look at it — would the Jets be able to swallow up and develop that area? That’s a big statement but it’s something that needs to be considered.”

Hobart Mariners has a nice ring to it!

If a club underperforms, it means it's not worthy of playing in the top league and another better organised club should take its place?
Sounds a lot like "relegation" to me... which is ok. Every team should be permanently under scrutiny by the parameters of performance on the field (which can also be the result of a poorly organised/funded club): the Jets should have been 3-4 years ago too.
How do you replace the poorly performing club though: well, in the rest of the world this is decided on the field too: the best team(s) in a second division goes up, and if they're not ready they will promptly come back to 2nd div the following year.

Correct. From what I understand they had a cry when the Breakers folded, didn't like the way Con did things so went to support Northern Spirit and then became Mariners fans when the A-League started.

Hell the whole reason we call them Gypo's is from the gypsy like nature of their supporters going from one place to another when it suits them.

Yep - they had a big spit because Con wanted to move to the bigger stadium. These guys christened the new club Newcastle Uknighted and it just went mental from there.

One of the great comments was that they wanted to stay at Breakers because "Constantine has no hope of getting a 15,000 crowd" (he got it at the first game).

They've spouted on ever since about how it was all a big conspiracy between Con, Soccer Australia and NNSWF to get the Breakers kicked out, with Con getting involved to take over the licence and move the team from Birmingham Gardens to our stadium so he could have a bigger claim in trying to buy the Knights. No doubt he probably was trying to buy the Knights, but doesn't change the fact the Breakers were broke as all f*ck and on the way out anyway, so when someone with deeper pockets came along of course the NSL wasn't going to say no. F*ck that GF win against them with Con in all his glory must have hurt them haha.

We've had 3 different owners since Con left town so no reason for those lads to now hold that grudge against us.

This isn't verified but I read somewhere that Charlesworth is looking to sell the Mariners licence to Canberra FC at the end of the season.

He keeps all the assets he has, they get a license and all player contracts are void. The deal would involve them playing 6 games a year at Gosford.

So nothing solid but sorta makes sense.

but

not sure how he can 'sell' something, then 'retain' assets, but void contracts. the player contracts should be binding, unless he goes proper belly up.
but if he goes belly up then he doesnt get to keep assets.

also, why would canberra pay for half a licence?

better off waiting for the Nix (or the Gypos) to fall over and bradbury their way in.

This was posted to Reddit as a quote from someone else regarding this.

CCM selling to Canberra as soon as the CRWG is up and running.
Once the new arrangements are bedded down, the sale can go ahead as the value of a licence will be underwritten by the A League itself.
The power of the FFA to remove a licence at arms length will be severely curtailed.
Charlesworth gets his payday and his company gets to keep the other assets. Canberra will play a limited number of games at Gosford for a couple of seasons.

PS this move would also end the existing player/staff contracts except where stipulated in the deal. I'm pretty sure Mat Simon will be the first recruited to Canberra though. Anything else is unthinkable!

Guess they would then wait around in NPL until 2nd tier happens and try to reboot. Gonna miss those easy 3 points year in year out tho.

Even the dog rooters of the NRL realised Gosford is a mistake and don't want anything to do with the place. The whole reason that Bluetongue or whatever it's called now was built was for the North Sydney Bears to move there, and when the Northern Eagles became a thing they gave on up trying to split games between Manly and Gosford halfway through as no-one on the Coast turned up and finished up playing all home games at Brookvale.

The NRL is smart enough to learn from the shit attendances the Mariners get to know that throwing them a few token games every couple of years is more than they deserve.

Millar is a right back. I can see a few options, thinking about it.

* Combo of Millar and Georgievski. Vujica to be the left back reserve, perhaps even leave.
* Millar and Vujica to be the combo because Georgievski departs - I see that less likely being the LINEUP, though I could see Daniel leaving.

Regardless, Johnny K long term won't be a right back in my eyes.

Rubbish. At our worst we were never that bad. When we were struggling we still attracted decent crowds and membership. These incompetent O2 thieves have gone way past the point of ample time to turn there shit around.

If you want or excuse clubs of this standard in your top league you are part of the problem. You want the game to flourish and grow and be more popular in attendances and finances and put clubs of this standard up as your product to sell to interested parties sponsors etc. How does that work ???

Kick em out and give the spot to Canberra or the Wolves to make a go of. Send em back a step and if they are good enough having got there shit together they can fight for inclusion again in the future. Right at this moment they are an embarrassment to the entire League and should not be defended.

Yeah nah.

We’ve never shipped 8 goals at home let alone twice in the space of 12 months. We’ve never had a crowd as low as 3,000 in Newy (ACL don’t count) and our membership numbers have always been solid even in the Tinkler/Stubbins.

Newcastle is a football heartland that deserves and warrants a team at the highest level. A team on the gypo coast was always a novelty and it had run its course.

That is a piss weak point that result in Adelaide and one i would expect from not drilling down the issues. That Adelaide result was the culmination of senior players with experience at a variety of clubs all over the world able to identify when a coach is out of his depth, I present to you Phil Stubbins. Stubbins never had a head coach role in this country before coming to us, he was a gamble that did not pay off ( Don't believe the shit you read about Stumblin's ACL head coach stuff on Wiki ( regular manager did not have the qualifications to be named as Manager on paper ).

The Mariners issues go a lot deeper than simply poor coaching appointments. Of course The Gypo's are not the only club to experience lean times but the real test is how you deal with those adversities and time after time the Mariners fail to sort there shit out thinking culling a coach is the answer. They have dramas at multiple levels throughout the organisation and as such have no place in the league.

If the A League is to be a fighting chance of getting its shit together in popularity and corporate financial support it needs to leave clubs like the mariners behind. To accept the year after year mediocrity from the Mariners is to accept standards that will see the A League reach never seen before lows. No club should be able to represent the A League the way they do. A new coach and a " other clubs have had shit results " attitude ain't going to fix that clusterf^&* called the Mariners.

There are whispers from within the New Leagues Working Group - the body tasked with formulating the structure of the framework for an independently run competition - that the Mariners’ license might be distributed elsewhere, possibly to a second team in Brisbane or even to Canberra.

Out them, their time is up.

They are dragging the league down and not even trying to get better - absolute minimum salary spend, signing bargain basement NPL players or has-beens, couldn't even manage a 4k crowd despite $5 tickets last weekend. Squatters in every sense of the word.

Canberra, Wollongong, South Melbourne, Hobart, Auckland or even 2nd Brisbane team would add more to the league. If the Coast wants a team that bad wait for the 2nd division and earn a spot in the top league.

we demand that players train to be the absolute best they can be, to push themselves further every day usually at the detriment of their health and well being. The consequence of failure to do so is the loss of employment, and the stigma remaining attached that can harm future employment prospects.

yet here we are continually letting the people in charge get away with nothing short of sub standard performance off the park. why?

the biggest gripe 'people' have about the league is that there has been very little improvement year to year in the standard of play, crowds, tv ratings and all the other measurables we tend to use. but how do we get better when we have a league that actually stifles achievement and rewards/panders to the bottom feeders. think about what exactly is the motivation for the gypos to succeed? there is none. players get paid regardless, the licence never moves, but the overall product suffers.

this is what the owners have been fighting for all along, they want the ability to run things their way.The ones wanting to take responsibility arent doing it in the hope of bringing in more regulation. they want a free for all, they want more players, better players, more chance at revenue and to give the league more of a chance to prosper. most of these people are from business backgrounds that wouldnt think twice about running a competitor into the ground because thats how business works. now for them to come into a league where we have the FFA saying 'go easy on the shit teams', their collective heads must be spinning trying to understand the logic.

cut the shit loose, let the 'good' teams invest in themselves and build a stronger league.

the gypos wont be missed. and if theres a 2nd/3rd or 4th division let them back in there and they can earn their way back. we all have to earn everything in life, its not a new concept.

They have nothing more going for them than the Fury or Gold Coast had. At the end of the day the A League is a product and if you keep putting up crap like the Mariners are as part of your product don't be surprised when those who support the game via sponsorship start pulling the plug on there investments.

Anybody advocating for the Mariners to continue inclusion is putting at risk the marketability of the A League as a whole all for a club that can't be half arsed helping itself. When you have an owner willing to pay his least experienced / least skilled player more than most of the squad combined - there really is no future for the Mariners in this competition.

Charlesworth couldn't find Okon the money he needed for the right players but had absolutely no troubles finding the money for a former Olympic Sprinter with absolutely no footballing pedigree.

The players must have felt like absolute shit while that all went down and by the time Bolt left I'd say the damage was beyond repair.

Clisby and so many others epitomize everything about what Markus Babbel was alluding to about the A League. No matter how average a footballer you are there is always a good chance a club will pick you up because the A League is a recyclers league. Season after season the league is slowly dying in the ass with clubs like the mariners leading the charge to the bottom.
