KEY FACTS:
The Jets kept two clean sheets against the Phoenix last year – once at home and once away.
The Jets have come away with points form Wellington in their last 3 visits. Two of these were draws on a Sunday.
Previously, the Jets had lost 9 form 10 fixtures, including a run of 7 straight losses.
The Jets have a W-D-L record against Ernie Merrick coached sides of 9-5-7.
Taylor Regan, should he play, will become the Jets 16th most capped player with 55 appearances, surpassing Ante Covic.
Last weekend, Edson Montano became the 51st goal scorer for the Newcastle Jets.
The last meeting between the two clubs served as the club’s biggest victory. It was also the last match in which a substitute scored for the Jets – a cracking volley by Michael Bridges.
The Jets have won a third round match four times, lost four times and drawn once in 9 seasons of the A-League. The only draw was last season’s match away at the Phoenix in which both teams were scoreless.
The Jets haven’t lost in the last 23 matches when they’ve been ahead at half time. However, they have lost the last 7 when they have been behind at half time.
Taylor Regan and Jeronimo Neumann already have 2 bookings this season.
In Wellington, the Jets have only scored 3 times in the first half and scored 7 goals there in total. The Phoenix, however have scored an average of 2 goals against us per game.
Vince Lia and Manny Muscat are the players who have received the most yellow cards in this fixture with 5.
The Phoenix player who has scored the most A-League goals against the Jets is Jeremy Brockie with 5.
THE REFEREE: – Chris Beath
The Jets W-D-L record under Beath is 5-5-12. When he has referred Jet v Wellington it is 1-0-3, in Wellington it is 0-0-2
An opposition player has never been dismissed by Beath referring a Jets match.
Beath is rather consistent with handing out cards, with a total of 46 issued to jets players and 43 to opposition players in 22 matches.
Beath isn’t one for giving the Jets penalties. The Jets have only ever been awarded 1 by Beath. He has awarded 3 by the opposition.
The Jets have previously had a streak of 13 matches without a win under Beath. We have, however, won 2 of our last 3 matches he has officiated.

He actually scored 3 for us - bonus point if you can name the team!
Funnily enough - Whenever Holland scored, we won. The win was always 2-1 and whenever Holland scored, Griff scored the other one!

Oh man, I vaguely remember this. It was really close to Xmas/NY, maybe New Years Day or just after or something like that, at home. Griff scored early on, someone equalised around half time, Holland won us the game.

Steele has been dropped from the travelling party for tomorrow's match. Gallaway brought in for him.
Steele has been dropped from the travelling party for tomorrow's match. Gallaway brought in for him.
NORTHERN Ireland international Jonny Steele is the first casualty of a culture Phil Stubbins is determined to create at the Newcastle Jets.
In Stubbins’ first major selection decision, Steele was left out of the 16-man travelling squad for the round three A-League clash against Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.
The feisty 28-year-old started on the left wing in the opening two rounds, producing a mixed bag.
But Stubbins insisted Steele’s omission was related to performances on the training pitch rather than in games.
The stance is part of a cultural shift Stubbins targeted when appointed in May.
‘‘For me, training is everything,’’ Stubbins said. ‘‘The application and intensity and everything we want at training needs to be apparent at any given time.
‘‘Maybe it is fatigue on Jonny’s part on this particular occasion, but he was just a little bit short at training. We have the two big games coming up, a lot of travel involved, and we decided to rest him up.’’
After tackling the Phoenix on Sunday, the Jets travel to Perth to take on the Glory next Saturday.
Steele joined the Jets from New York Red Bulls, where he played with Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill, and was one of the club’s high-profile additions under Stubbins.
He used his pace and vision to set up scoring chances for Marcos Flores and Edson Montano in the 1-1 draw with Melbourne City last round.
Against the Mariners he had an opportunity on goal himself but slightly overcooked a chip with keeper Liam Reddy in no-man’s-land.
Mixed in among the positives have been cheap turnovers and wild shots.
A firebrand by nature, Steele expressed his dismay at his axing to support staff after training.
‘‘Anyone who is not involved in the weekend is going to be a little unhappy,’’ Stubbins said. ‘‘Jonny is no different to any other player on that front.’’
Sam Gallaway has replaced Steele in the travelling party.
The 22-year-old started at left back in 24 of 27 games last season but was overlooked in the opening two rounds for David Carney.
His inclusion would allow Carney to push forward into the former Socceroo’s preferred role in midfield.
If Carney stays at left back, Andrew Hoole, who has played two games off the bench, is the most likely to come on to the right wing, with Joel Griffiths switching to the left.
‘‘There are quite a few options,’’ Stubbins said.
‘‘Wellington bring a different formation to the table.
‘‘As a consequence we might shuffle things around in minuscule ways.’’
Midfielder Zenon Caravella is the other likely inclusion as part of a positive approach by Stubbins.
‘‘We have to go there with the mindset of scoring goals and winning games,’’ the coach said on Friday. ‘‘The session we did this morning was based around that.
‘‘The more football we get into the team the better.
‘‘Zenon lends that service to the team in terms of his technical ability.
‘‘Along with Marcos Flores, who has that 70 minutes under his belt, we will start to improve in that area.
‘‘Whether we start with Zenon will depend how we go at training tomorrow. It is a possibility and a strong one. Is it cast in stone? No.’’
Phoenix are fresh from a 2-1 triumph over the Mariners and present a different challenge to the Jets’ last opponent.
‘‘City play a fluent 4-3-3 and are a good product on the eye to watch. They are not predictable, but you understand what they are trying to do,’’ Stubbins said.
‘‘Phoenix, they play with a 4-4-2, which is a bit of a hybrid formation with Michael McGlinchey and Nathan Burns who play off whatever attack presents itself in the front third.
‘‘Thereafter they could end up with one on the left wing, one on the right wing.
‘‘That is the unpredictability they have.
‘‘They scored a wonderful second goal against the Mariners with the fullbacks overlapping and McGlinchey and Nathan Burns involved.’’

Birraz has had a pretty good game so far. Neither of the goals were his fault and he's made some great saves as well.
The referee on the other-hand is an abortion. The Koala was brought down in the box and should have been awarded a penalty - and Montano was tripped just outside the box going directly to goal by the last defender and yet no foul, no card, and no send off.
I don't think Flores is 20% the player he used to be and he needs to be replaced.

They are playing (or at least were) 2 up front. We are very slow in the defensive transition. Gallagher has been invisible

He may be, but he didn't cost us the game today. I rate BK and Birraz equally, both have their own strength and weaknesses.
Stubbins has a lot to answer for, not sure what he is doing formation wise as it looks like a random splattering of players on the park, but its clearly not working. I wonder if we are watching GVE MkII and he is going to stick to his system irrespective of results?
Our wide defence is so quick to push forward in attack its leaving us exposed at the back. No one seems to be busting a gut to get back when they are caught out. The 4-5-1 is just a 4-3-3 dressed up and we are being over run in the mids. It could be equally formation as it is players not understanding or doing their job, but lets see a coach adapt for once.

I thought Caravella did well considering he was playing his own position and covering about 90% of Flores' workload as well.

I haven't read too many comments. And I have only watched the highlights but for Burns' second goal does anyone else think that Jaliens gave up chasing the ball too easily. I mean I think he should of instead of stop running go to around to the back of Birighitti incase of the scenario that happened. He was never going to tackle burns, he did what he could but than he handed responsibility to birraz and gave up.
I think he could of saved that goal if he had of kept going and went behind Birighitti for the scraps.
I know the initial problem was made much further up the park.

What the actual ****?
I mean, we never expect to win in Wello but ffs why do we insist on hoofing the ball up towards our forwards every five seconds in swirling winds - wondering why the ball never find its intended target?
And Griff & Kew are the only blokes who give a shit, they were all about to slink off down the tunnel until they made the rest of the team come and thank the 8 Newy people who made the effort to travel.
Caravan, great bloke but he finally starts and then can't pass a ball to save his arse. Main culprit for our terrible midfield today, so many mislaid passes.

did you see them at the pub before the game? only reason I can think of for such a pathetic performance is that you had them on the cans before the game.

To answer the question before - BK didn't travel because he has an ear issue I believe.
That was a very poor performance, which is an understatement I know. It was really hard watching because we got schooled by a very good midfield and an excellent counter attacking team.
I think we had a number of passengers yesterday. It took me 4 replays to spot where David Carney was for the first goal. He ended up at the top of the box and I have no reason why he was there. Carney is a real problem for me and I'm unsure if he is under instruction or if he's doing It himself but he's always 10-20m further upfield than Neville and I rarely see him doing his defensive duties. Bringing on Gallaway introduced a left back for us because Carney was continuously in the attacking third.
Flores really did nothing yesterday. We looked far more threatening, and Edson had greater service, when Griffiths played behind him. We also looked much stronger in midfield with Regan in there. Celeski can't come back soon enough.
Credit to Pepper, Griffiths and Jaliens yesterday. They ran their asses off.
Re: Birrighitti, the first and third goal wasn't his fault and the second was simply unlucky. He made a very brave save diving at the feet of Burns and I was giving him a point in my MoM until the last goal - that was a very poor effort. Those who have been at the game - how vocal is he?
Anyway, Stubbins certainly got done over yesterday. Those calling for GvE to come back I hope you're taking the piss. And I know someone was wanting a new untried coach and not the same old dross - well we have one. Let's give him some time. I certainly think he'll learn from this for the next game - but we have a big challenge against Perth next weekend.

I think they are under instruction, Carney (and to a lesser extent Neville) are very quick to move forward when we have the ball, no doubt to release Griff and Hoole further up the park.
That left us with two at the back, and no one busting their arse to cover in defence when we lost the ball. I don't even think it was us trying to hold a high line, just the wide backs trying to get involved in the attack too quick too often. We look completely without structure on the park, so often it just looked like a random splattering of players whether we had the ball or not.
My belief is we really do have the players this season. But in preseason it was evident we were being overrun in the mids and nothing has changed to address this.

That game yesterday was surely as bad as it can get.
I think it's been mentioned on here by those that love Griff that maybe he, Pepper and Kew can hold their heads high I tend to agree mostly, but kinda feel a bit for Birra too. There was bugger all structure in front of him and yes, he could have done better for the 4th. I'll get to Caravella later.
On Kew - obviously a class player and does appear to continue to put in a shift regardless of how the game is panning out. However, as a leader and as a captain he needs to take more responsibility for those in his backline. He needs to be constantly communicating with them and reeling them in. Blind Freddy can see we over-commit too often. Sure let the wide fullbacks push whilst the DM cover is there. If that cover isn't set the fullbacks simply don't go. It's quite simple really. Kew should be able to see all that and direct accordingly.
I'm happy to be shot down here but Caravella doesn't deserve some of this criticism. He works his socks off to cover those around him and generally tries to be an option wherever possible and likewise he tries to keep the ball moving. There are a few that could do with being slated before him I think..... (can't defend him for last weeks miss)

The problem is he needs to take 8 touches before passing the thing. Of course then his options are less and to be perfectly fair he is the greatest contributor to his downfall

Unlike Flores who gives the ball back to the opposition with his first touch.
You expect far too much from Caravella given the bloke we actually employ as our playmaker is the real problem.
Drop Flores and I think we will be a far more competitive team.
A stint in NYL will do him good.

The bloke has had barely 180 mins of competitive action after coming back from a major injury and you wish to axe him and right him off based on the fact our midfield was overrun and the supply given to him was shite??
If you think the Florist is gone run his socks off in defence then you are mistaken. If you think this bloke is gonna be a superstar when he gets poor ball and is constantly in tight spaces then you have issues
If the CM's when we win the ball play the thing precisely to the bloke and at speed then he can do some damage. If Roundabout wants to take 8 touches and run around in a circle before releasing it we won't see the best of Flores
To say blokes ain't showing is a complete crock of shite. Blokes don't get the ball when they do show as we refuse to move the ball at any speed. Our movement can be a lot better make no mistake about that but the issue lies with our players playing the first ball forward and quickly to start our attack
I don't expect too much from Caravella. All I expect him to do is win the ball hold position and pass the ball onto our attacking players. Reality is it is Flores Montano Griff etc who will create our attack and not this bloke. He needs to keep it simple and stop ****ing around with it thinking he is Xavi.
Our issue on Sunday was our midfield was so far behind the Phoenix mids in level of performance it was not funny. Add in our defence were failing to mark up or be first to the ball and we got what we got.
Even the criticism of Birraz is bordering on farce. The bloke was exemplary for 90 mins and his only blemish was he came for a cross and got caught in no mans land in the 92nd min and cost us a goal,
It happens keepers make mistakes and when you are losing anyway that's the time to make them not when the game is in the balance
The bullshit about him punching the ball in the first half is ****ing absurd. The ball ended up 40m from goal near the sideline so end of day he has done the right thing and cleared the threat and allowed his defenders to regroup and get set so **** OFF with that shit

Let's stick with him until his confidence is so completely and utterly destroyed and then let him rot till he leaves.

I'd reckon Flores' mindset might be a bit different to James Brown's

Could have fooled me. Fullbacks pushed up into the wingers assholes, lose possession in midfield, destroyed on counter.
Apart from his accent, what the **** is different to GVE?
Maybe the naysayers on FB are correct... our players are shit and have let down every coach that has come and gone.

Remember who you are talking to.
If I still am giving Stubbins a chance and am not prepared to stick the knife in yet then maybe a few others should get off the blokes back.
As I said earlier I couldn't give a **** we played poorly got flogged. It happens. With Newy much more often than it should
What interests me is how Stubbins and the team respond to last Sunday's shit.
I hope to see some team selections and tactics altered.
I also EXPECT the vast majority of players to turn in significantly improved individual efforts
I wish to see us aim up and have a solid crack at Perth this week.
I EXPECT to see that
PS The difference between Stubbins and GVE is that Stubbins now has the chance to rectify the failings. Hopefully he does
GVE on the other hand would in this instance would soldier on banging his head against the brick wall forever

The bloke has had barely 180 mins of competitive action after coming back from a major injury and you wish to axe him and right him off based on the fact our midfield was overrun and the supply given to him was shite??
Caravella has played around 90 mins of competitive action since hes been out of football for 5 months, whats the difference

Caravella is shit
Always was and always will be not good enough for us.
If we were that desperate for a central mid then should have hit up Jobe to come back.
Least the bloke is Newy

James Brown was overated. What has he really done as a footballer ?.

Gotta agree here, At the time we were looking for a defensive style midfielder were we not ?. The only thing roundabout manages to tackle and impede are his own team mates.

Maybe if caravella released the ball
a forward
b quickly
a lot of his issues would be resolved.
The problem is he needs to take 8 touches before passing the thing. Of course then his options are less and to be perfectly fair he is the greatest contributor to his downfall
Finally a post I agree with you on.
Caravella had at least half a dozen instances where he could have moved the ball on to a team mate in a better position that would have continued an attack, only to turn away and go backwards or lose the ball. Quick ball movement is the order of the day in this league.
Maybe under all your usual vitriol and bile you dish up towards the club and team you are supposed to "support" there is a tiny amount of intelligence

For a time last season the Roundabout did release is quickly and forward and he really improved. I hoped this was the "light bulb" moment for him but he seems to have gone back to his old ways on the evidence so far this season. I do hope he goes back on the good stuff. That Roundabout is a good one.

Would be nice if the club and the team tried the same approach....it would fantastic to go into a season without some form of drama clouding things off the field and a clear identity on it. For a non capital city club we have the potential to be fantastic but for whatever reason we just can't seem to get our shit together....God help us if we do, some supporters may go through their own identity crisis then.
