He played pretty much all the instruments on his recordings and only really used a band for live work.

Played a piano like Rubinstein and had pretty much mastered the guitar as well.

His song writing and style were years ahead of the pack as well. Nearly 30 years on and the Sign of the Times album still sounds fresh - and why wouldn't it when everyone since has been trying to emulate it.

Much like Bowie, Prince was a once in a life time musician / artist who will be talked about and studied for a very long time.

Sad day indeed.

yeah but theres a difference between you not liking someone, which is absolutely correct, and them being 'overrated'.
i mean, 100 million albums, Grammys and an Oscar are probably a good indicators that plenty of people rated him quite highly.

I think we need to look at some of the things they have contributed to modern music Plague - sure you might not like the sounds, or think they are over-rated. Personally, I am no fan of Led Zep and can't stand "Stairway", but I acknowledge the influence they had on many young metal bands to come.

The Stones made everyone aware of the original blues roots of rock and developed the "stadium gig" to the money spinner it is now. Jagger was the first real "frontman" of rock.

The Who made Marshall's what they are now, had the greatest bass player of all time and one of rocks most influential songwriters - Townshend even predicted the internet in 1970 when he wrote "Lifehouse".

As for longevity - who are we to say when a band should pack it in? As long as they are physically capable, enjoy it and have punters willing to pay why stop? The baby boomer bands are going to places where nobody else has thanks to longer life spans - will be interesting to see if anyone follows.

Music is a culture of very differing opinions - it's the beauty of it.

But if someone thinks that zepplin, hendrix or beiber are sh1t, it isnt wrong (maybe a bit naive), its your opinion against theirs. You might love Bros and I will say cool even if I might not. Yeah I'm with that.
Especially considering of all the iconic performers of that generation (which would be a group consisting of Prince, Michael Jackson and Madonna) you would have to say Prince was by far the best technical musician, and by far the more prolific songwriter.

2 pretty big categories I'd say.

MJ was the better singer and performer, and Madonna the better marketer.

See my post above of Jascha Heifetz . There is no argument he is the greatest musician to have ever been recorded.

You could then talk about the best at a specific instrument. Dennis Brain perhaps would be regarded as the greatest horn player of all time without anyone else coming near him.

Cello - You can argue between Casals or Rostropovich - but there are a lot of people that come near enough to fool the casual observer.

Get to Piano and Guitar and it really does come down to opinions and preferences because there is not a lot of difference between a large class of players. Same as with drums or Bass...and so on.

My favourite guitarists are Townsend, Hendrix, Richards, and Malcolm Young. There are many out there better technically than this lot - but riff wise it would be hard to find anyone else to match them.

True. And of that three I'd say Prince and Madonna are still relevant. MJ's music was past its use by date five years after it was released. Try listening to Thriller these days. It's not easy.

Yeah but Off the Wall is MJs best album and still killer. There's just some fantastic proper pop songs on there, but from memory he really only wrote about half of it.

I'd probably take a Michael Jackson concert in his prime over just about any live experience from that era.

Green Day = Stiff Little Fingers clones. Absolutely blatant rip-off.
Pearl Jam = A poor mans version of The Who. Eddie Vedder must have listened to their albums a hell of a lot.
Alicia Keys - No ****ing idea - N3ever paid any attention to her music.

Jackson 5 are not Michael Jackson. All he did was sing and dance. The brothers were very talented musicians and writers [especially Jermaine Jackson - fabulous musician].

No no, what I'm saying is that take any popular musician (whether you like them or not) and compare their live performance 20 years ago to now and I think the list of people who are comparable would be real small.

MJ towards the end was nothing of his old self, Madonna doesn't even try and staples like Farnham, Billy Joel, Metallica are shadows of their former selves.

The examples I gave were ones I thought were at least consistent, and it highlighted how great Prince was live that he still blew doors every night.

Performing live and putting an album out are two different things

There are many artists who out on a great show but their work in the studio is average conversely there are many who put in great performance in a studio but cant do it live

Also comparing people 20years ago to now is a bit harsh. People have kids families partners and have different interests as they age.

Some of those performers you slate as not being as good now more than likely not have the motivation to go out night after night and conquer the world. They have done it and would rather kick back counting their millions doing other things most of the time

Also again: the point of the discussion was longevity and an ability to maintain a standard previously set.
So yes, anyone out there still touring is fair game for this discussion.

You don't have to cape up for your favourites every single time.

I mean, we do it with footballers every single time, why can't we expand the discussion?

Ok. On that note then as a live act the Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, and The Who can still pretty much destroy everyone else live. Sure they are not what they were vocally but musically they have very tight rhythm sections that most of todays bands can only dream of having.

Oh and The Jackson 5 even without MJ are still pretty awesome - again - Because they are such great musicians.

Leonard Cohen is pushing towards 80 and is still fabulous live.

Most notable of those that no longer have it is Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green. His fall from being one of the greatest guitarists on the planet to being a mere shadow of his former self is very sad indeed.

The multi million $$ paychecks available to them mean they are almost certain to partake in the touring aspect again regardless of whether their abilities and motivation is 100% like it was back in the day

Let's remember most of these people have been to the top of the mountain achieved their fame and fortune why would they want to pony up and climb the mountain again

They can sit around the pool all day checking their internet banking as the royalties keep rolling in for past work

Same as in Football you can respect SAF as he done it at high standard for years and regularly found success. Compare him to Wenger who has also been doing at a high level for years but is bludging off what he achieved 15 years ago

Football laws...would like some feedback. I feel the laws are too complicated and are ruining the game. The main ones I have issue with....

Handball - it used to be simple, if the hand moves toward the ball deliberately it's handball. All this rubbish about un-natural positions etc makes it far too subjective. You should be able to protect yourself too.

Holding in the box - you put your arms around someone at a corner, penalty. Why does it just get totally ignored now and we see WWF at each corner?

Tackle from behind - was originally brought in to stop Gentile types scything studs up from behind on Maradona types which was fair enough. But now a fair tackle with the bootlaces, getting the ball is a foul (a la Boogs).

Physical contact - harden up. Arms flail when jumping for the ball, knees go into backs, there are (legal) shoulder charges - all part of the game. But poofs roll on the ground and get free kicks and yellow cards for offenders.

Offside - go back to the old rule. Only offside if you play the ball.

Watch some games from the 70's - any league. Never seemed to do any more people harm than now.

Handball- this is to prevent things like birraz a few seasons ago when he came out like a massive X and jumped at the kicker and it hit his arm and he was sent. Like is this ok? Cause the ball hit his arm? Like defenders can use their arms to make themselves look bigger and harder to get around. Next we will have defenders with hands up in the walls, but sir, my arm was there the whole time, the ball hit it...
Holding - agree, I think a lot of it is 2 ways. Skrtel used to rugby tackle players to the ground.

The offside one is interesting. Defenders crying wolf has probably lead to this being changed a lot.

MFKS
29-04-2016, 12:39 PM
The offside one is just complete garbage.

Passive offside can see a bloke get a 10 yard head start on his marker.

Ball gets played down the flank. Early ball in

The bloke in the offside position is then advantaged by being offside.

Happens far too often.

Yet you see ridiculous offsides pulled up where an attacker is offside and runs back towards his own goal and is on half way and gets pulled up when he receives the ball and nothing is happening. We get a needless free kick when no one got an advantage

I reckon the advantage for the attacker in that situation comes from bind able to "arrive from nowhere" effectively being able to blindside a defender by being behind him - in an illegal position.

Most of the time in this situation the defender knows exactly where the striker is and is just beaten to the ball by the striker

Add in that most of the time in this scenario the attacker is usually only a yard from being onside and if is a bit picking technicality that just sees play needlessly stopped by a free kick

Completely needless delay where neither team is actually impacted.

Those watching are the ones who see a needless restart added thanks to some useless ****ing rule

all over the road to blow everywhere and wash down the drain and stuff the water system up.
I'd be embarrassed to leave a lawn job...mine or anybody's the way these contractors do. ('twas Jims btw)
Have a gander after your average contractor is finished. You'll see more times than not what I just described.

My shower grinds my gears. Hot water pressure sometimes goes AWOL - especially in the mornings and after 5:00PM - It gets hot but simply dribbles out and adding cold to build the pressure effectively kills it.
Some days though, the bastard has enough power to blow you through the glass - most puzzling.

Speed humps on the street

Some halfwords have actually installed some speed humps on a rather large hilly street near by

The road in question isn't renowned for accidents matter of fact I can barely remember a fender smash

I can understand the downhill section to slow traffic in some concession
But to put 5 of the ****ers on the uphill section when most cars are struggling up in 2nd gear defies logic

It's not narrow at the top really. The problem is the bus stop on either side of the road.
The buses pull up there to pick up drop off passengers and people cross the unbroken lines drive on the wrong side of road to overtake

Simple solution would be to remove the bus stops or to move them to a more suitable location or fine the motorists breaking the law

True. When the street was designed, it possibly didn't take into account the future growth of cars. The cars parked on the side of the road don't leave much space either.

Boarding and getting off planes - never know why there is a stampede to board ASAP when you have allocated seating?

And why do people need to jump up, push and shove and grab their carry on luggage as soon as the plane comes to a halt? They seem to think the doors will swing open immediately. The long queue of squashed people in the aisle holding their luggage while I sit and make a couple of calls amuses me.

1st one is to steal everyones overhead luggage space when you bring 29391 bags on board.

What annoys me the most is the ****wits at the baggage claim that stand right at the conveyer belt, nothing I like more than barging my way through and hitting people with my bag as I swing it off.

Point 1) I like to get in early as there is nothing worse than assholes taking up the overhead compartment with the 57 bags they snuck through Stevie Wonder on the gate. Especially on international I don't want to be trudging up the aisle to get shit out of my backpack during a flight. The spot above my seat is mine and I'll thrown hands with anyone who tries to take it.

Point 2) you are 100% spot on. In fact we have a game where everyone in our crew on a flight gets to pick which asshole is first to jump out of their seat before the seatbelt sign goes off on arrival. Its great for end of season trips as 20 blokes point and laugh at some idiot standing there. Highly recommend it.

Some must think point 1 is a status symbol - two weeks ago I got on at Brissy and was about 20th in line. Made my way to my seat, no bags at all - one guy already in his aisle seat buckled up, I was window seat. The looks and the huffing and puffing as I dared an "excuse me".

Nah, it's a convenience thing. If you're on a long flight (6hrs+) you don't want to be walking up and down aisles getting stuff from your backpack because the flight attendant made you put it somewhere else.

How often do you jerks get shit out of your bags :rof:

I do hate the jerks who steal the spot above your seat though. Had a bloke across the aisle, and a row back, put his bag in my spot once (and basically the whole cabin was free) because "he liked to have a good view of the spot his bag was". I then put my bag directly above him, and made a point of getting shit out of it multiple times not through need but just to wind him up :rof:

It's better than being that asshole that gets EVERYTHING out pre-flight and sets up a base camp.
Headphones, media player, spare water.
Then sometimes if you gotta work you get your laptop out.
Jumper, socks etc.

You just let the mood of the flight guide you. Legroom is vital, why clog it up with shit you don't need?

Also, if there's no one in my row but some asshole has his bag in my spot I have no qualms at all pushing that bag out of my way to get my preferred spot. It also sends a clear message to the plane that I am not a man to be messed with. I feel it sets a good tone. Let's everyone understand that "I am the captain now".

My goal is to get off the thing as quickly as possible

If I travelling around Oz i have carry on anyway so the quicker i off plane then the quicker i off and on my way.

If I travelling OS and have checked well I am also in a hurry to get to the immigration queues. Last thing I want to be doing is getting stuck behind a plane load of people

You can sit waiting making calls for all I care just don't hold me up

Your right about the halfwords though who charge onto a plane to have to wait.

What's the point of getting on early and then having to wait for some twat to get up and get shit out of their bag holding 100 other people up??

Stroll on at your l leisure and go sit down

As for Plagues remark about people getting too much shit out of bag.

Better to be that person than the prat who sits in the terminal for an hour doing nothing and then gets on the plane and after everyone is seated and ready has to get up as in the hour they were in the terminal wasnt enough time to get that one ****ing item out of the bag that they need

When is it OK to recline

As far as I am concerned as soon as the first meal is over and cleaned up it is going back the full way. To the **** behind me they can deal with it

Look man in all my years of flying I've never not been able to get a mother****er to get up when I want out.

Your medicated overweight straw man doesn't work round me.

and trust me I'm prepared to piss on another human being if a have to. Having the will to urinate on someone gives me absolute power. Plus, a urine soaked stubborn bastard refusing to get up will still be in the wrong according to all FAA and societies rules.

As for reclining.

Firstly let me congratulate you on bringing up the best question on the Foz since Biraz v BK. You are a genius.

The answer is interesting.

Any flight sub 3 hours is a def no.

If it's an overnight flight I'm with you as once the meal is done and it's night time then there is an acceptance than reclining will happen.

Any other circumstances and be warned that reclining in front of me will result in my tray being put up and down very violently at least once every 3 mins until you learn some manners.

With you there on the reclining plague.

Tbh my rule with reclining is I do whatever the person in front of me does. I can handle no inclination unless the person in front of me does - then I consider it the domino effect and if I'm hit up about it from behind I blame the guy in front of me

People who, when approaching stopped traffic, start braking hundreds of meters out and slowly creep along to pull up behind them.

People who see cars stopped at a zebra crossing and run to get across while cars are stopped... if you walk the stopped car can be on its way and the next car will stop, you don't have to run guys!

Update

Started off a couple of weeks ago

Someone plugged through two of them one night knocking the dividing thing in the centre of the road completely out

As a result you can now drive between the two of them and not go over the ****ers

Then a 3rd went then a 4th.

Finally the last one went and I can now go up and down the hill again without going over one of the ****ers

Ain't grinding my gears any more

Not sure if its happening back in Aus... but here the the trend for the "teenage" school kids going to school with the small carry on suitcases instead of a backpack....

So annoying...

Ex wives.

5 day round trip to Adelaide to pick up last of my stuff. Sentimental furniture that my dad made when I was a kid has black paint on random parts. Had 5 garbage bags of clothes to get as well... someone thought it would be funny if they filled the bags with glitter.

:sigh: sorry to hear that mate. Is the furniture salvageable? I'm sure there are some people on here who are handy with timber who could possibly help restore it. I know that's not the point, and it's a pretty petty act.

Dunno yet. Will have a word to my dad but it will just sit in the garage for the time being as I'm off to Manila for work.

being forced to make the decision to either stay up drinking and go straight to the airport, or trying to get a few token hours before boarding the plane.

either way its usually the wrong decision.
