See the funny thing with all this is all the people blowing up at Ange and the players
The reality is the ****s who are responsible for this are the FFA
Ange actually coached us to the FFA endorsed curriculum last night
Just look at the KPIs in possession and field position and shots at goal etc
The players done what they have been coached to do which is play this way
It the failings of the Dutch Mango Suckers and their coaching gameplans that are to blame and the dumb ****s at FFA who buy it hook line and sinker
We have actually turned out back on what advantages we have such as height physical aggression etc and now refuse to use these tactics to our advantage as we want to try and play this style of football that some Dutch failure believes in

If we get pass Syria..... Honduras worries me most. They take their football seriously in that part of the world, very hostile environment there, maybe even worse than Uruguay . From Wiki: "The Football War (Spanish: La guerra del fútbol), also known as the Soccer War or 100 Hour War, was a brief war fought between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969. Existing tensions between the two countries coincided with rioting during a 1970 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The war began on 14 July 1969, when the Salvadoran military launched an attack against Honduras."

Just over reading every pea brain on Twitter hammering Ange saying that his formation was the issue last night
We had 45 shots at goal
It wasn't like the formation of a back 3 saw us struggle to play
Struggle to score Yes but that down to execution of skills the resolution of the Thai defence and luck
But every pea brain is going off on Twitter missing what the real issues are here
It ain't Ange and it ain't the players efforts last night or over the last year
It is the systematic failings of the FFA in the last dozen years that have led us to this point
They the issues that need addressing
Also on another note we ain't out of the WC

Not having seen the table, that's surprising to me. I was pretty impressed with the Thai's last night. Their scrambling in defence in a dead rubber for them was pretty unreal, and I was not at all surprised when they scored - they looked threatening many times going forward, and we struggled to contain their attacking players who all had plenty of flair and good technique. Not to mention some extremely lucky refereeing for us, Sainsbury should have been sent off and Degenek got nutmegged but was deemed to have completed a fair tackle.
Mooy was the standout last night, he was behind probably 80% of our threatening situations by providing key passes. No idea why Cahill started in the deeper role, where he can still contribute is in the box poaching goals.
Anyone know if the qualifiers will be on free to air?

Confident we can beat both Syria and Panama (assuming they beat Trinidad). If we can't, then I think we have squandered enough chances.

Interesting thing with the belittling of the Thais as being unable to play etc
Look at the way they worked their goal
Look at the way they took their chance
They did what a team is meant to do
They actually a lot better than their 130 ranking or whatever it is and will only improve
Where we failed is to put them to the sword and kill the contest both times we played them

Give up on your Mooy bashing. Bloke is light years above anything we have in the NT setup and bossed our team last night. Everything came through him.

For me, I wouldn't be playing Rogic in these games against teams sitting back. He has a decent shot on hi and wants to attack goals, and likes taking people on. That's great if the game's a bit open and there are counter attacking opportunities. His dribbling isn't good enough to get through tight spaces, shown against Japan and Thailand. And his passing isn't quick enough or incisive enough.
Mooy found a lot of good passes around the edge of the 18 and can shoot when required. Luongo showed against Japan he can play the first time stuff needed to create gaps and I think he has better defensive work rate too.
Milligan is probably our best holding midfielder, but not really required until we are playing stronger opposition who will look to contest possession in our own half. He didn't offer much offensively.

Rogic to me is a last 30 minute player
As the game opens and space is available then sub him on to exploit it
I think we would get greater joy out of it and so would Rogic
Ange needs to stop ****ing around with Milligan and pick him in the one role not change him every second game

Costa Rica snagged 1-1 draw with Mexico, they are a mere point away from Russia. Current standings:

3rd - Panama - 10 points (+2 GD)
4th - USA - 9 points (+1 GD)
5th - Honduras - 9 points (-7 GD)

You can have them!
I still have about 90% of shows from 2010 still on my DVD HDD...
Have heard the Syria away leg will most likely be in the Middle East rather than Kuala Lumpur
To me I think it is a great thing
We have a lot more experience playing in the dry heat in the Gulf
We also struggled physically in November in Bangkok with the pace of the game. Playing 1 month earlier a 2 hour flight closer to the equator I don't think is going to help us with the humidity challenge
The other thing I think that also helps us is that our players are going to be a bit more experienced taking the 13-14 hour journey back to Australia and then playing 4-5 days later
Think the Syrians will be helping us more by playing in the Gulf than KL

Fifa announced the tickets will be opened up on 14th September I think until 12th October. Doesn't matter if you request things on first day or last day, allocation is random.
Anybody that has done it before?
Idk whether to wait and see if we qualify, because obviously I'd prefer to see Australia play.
Or to apply for one of those stadium only ticket groups and just be in Moscow or st Petersburg.
Anybody planning to go? What's your plan?

currently pre-planning. went on a tour in '06 so tix were included.
never done the ballot.

im not necessarily fussed whether Aust qualifies. we have a Russian local who is organising an apartment in St Petersburg so will prob just want to go to all possible games in the area.

I can give you a lot of info on this
Probably best I do it in little bits and pieces as I can instead of just doing it in one foul swoop
For a start don't go gung ho making plans until you hear me out on it as I will have some good insight to assist you
Firstly don't worry about getting tickets
You may not get them straight away but you will source them no drama before the games
Last time out they had a random ballot first up and I got none
Then they had a virtual queue and I got none
Next round was a ballot and I got 3 Aussie games and Honduras v Ecuador and Rd16 which was France V Nigeria although at the time no one knew for certain who it would be
After that they had a few more virtual queues and one of them I got lucky
Got Rd 16 Brazil v Chile although I didn't go **** you fog in Rio
Rd 16 Argentina v Swiss
QF France v Germany
I also at some stage picked up France Honduras ticket
I also traded or negotiated
Iran v Nigeria
Argentina v Belgium QF
Sth Korea v Belgium
England v Costa Rica
So at one stage I was staring down the barrel of nothing and ended up with 13 tickets all up
As for this first draw
Honestly don't expect to get them
Last time out the majority of tickets at this draw went to the locals rather than foreigners
There will be some tickets issued to foreigners but look at this as a free swing to try and belt a home run
My goal in this would be to maximise your ticket value here
Go for tickets that will be in high demand and give you trade bait so you can get what you want later
I would be looking at going for things like final semi qf tickets
You probably won't get them but if you do you are set
The other thing that may be worthwhile to try is for a team series ticket 5-6-7
A bloke I got the Iran v Nigeria ticket off got the Iran T7 last time out
He didn't give two ****s about Iran but he was more interested in getting the bigger end tickets
He also sussed out that there be minimal demand for Iran getting to the Final and got lucky
Because Iran got eliminated he got tickets to the Rd 16 QF SF and Final involving his group winner which just happened to be Argentina
The venue ones are not the worst if you can Jag them but they really are a mixed bag of shit
As for your ordering tickets I don't give a **** how many people are traveling in your group always apply for 4 or the maximum
You may only want one for your arse but 3 to trade gives you a lot of bargaining power
Just make sure you have enough room on your credit card to pay for them all if you get lucky
On another note they also allowed posting of tickets to your residence
I didn't take this up . But it is a great way of getting around their 7 ticket limit
So take it up if they do
The second draw is where you best off applying for Socceroos tickets if they do get there
This is where the bulk of them will be doled out to the Socceroos fans. I would say about 80-90% of Socceroos fans who went to Brazil got there tickets here
Some were unlucky but the vast majority got the good news with this draw
I also waited until the last minute to put this application in
As a result I was able to see the Rd 16 game France v Nigeria game was in low demand and the Honduras v Ecuador game were in low demand
As I bid for them I got them as the odds were in my favour
I would set my stall out to be prepared to watch any game
You may not get to see a Germany v Brazil match up but all games regardless of who is playing are exciting
Basically be prepared to take what you can get
As for Category tickets
Cat 1
Cat 2
Cat 3
Quite frankly Cat 1 we're at times dissappointing
I had Cat 1 for Socceroos games
I ended up about 25m out from the goal Chile scored twice at on the sideline
In the Holland game I ended up actually about 20 m behind the goal Robben scored in
At the Spain game I ended up about 25 minutes out from the goal Villa scored at on the sideline
So at 1 ain't the greatest seats as they are actually saved for media and sponsors etc
So be prepared to try for the Cat 2-3 seats as well
I actually had a Cat 3 seat at Porto Alegre France v Honduras that was in a better spot than my Cat 1 to see Aussies v Dutch
So your really up to the fate of the gods here
If any of you are considering going on a tour with Green and Gold Army or Fanatics
Forget it
Book everything yourself
Hotels flights transport etc
Easy to arrange
There is a thing called the internet you know to research things
Getting a group house as Plague is thinking isn't a bad idea if you prepared to live in people's pockets to save a few $$
If you can actually swing the holiday leave try and stay for the 2nd round at minimum and maybe the QFs if you can
2nd Rd tickets are not the hardest to get and the reality is you be looking at seeing some great teams play as the bigger teams will usually be drawn together now
If it all works out you could go to 4 games in 4 days in the 2nd Rd and 2 QFs in 2 days
I will leave it there for now
Any questions fire away
plague

haha yeah no chance going with fanatics.
having a Russian connection we were going to try and get tickets through them as locals. again, just try and get anything cheapish and available to then trade for better stuff.
my homies are def going im a late addition wont be making any decisions til end of the year anyway when the draw is done and what games will be available.
Other thing I would add is
Put in applications in your name
In your wife's name
In your parents name
Anyone who is happy to let you slug their credit card as they trust you to fix them up needs to be roped in
The more applications you can put in the better
This is why you want tickets posted as well
Last time I had multiple bank accounts set up with my parents name but my money
As a result when I was in the virtual queue I had numerous devices going
Phone tablet laptop desktop etc

If you were this lucky I don't think you really would be but for arguments sake you cracked the big time
I don't think you had the choice.
The lottery was done and they didn't announce the results
You got slugged a debit on your Credit Card
That was how I found out I had tickets
By following my internet banking once others on the net reported getting debited
The email confirmation came a day or so later
The only time they contacted you before payment is if your card bounced or some type of indiscepancy came up I believe
So i don't think you had the choice to cancel
They did though have a portal where you could put up any unwanted tickets back for resale to other punters
FIFA were taking about 10-15% commission though
That being said if you got too many tickets I wouldn't worry about getting rid of them
You will find plenty of takers who will take them from you.
Just don't corner the market in games like Greece V Ivory Coast in Brazil
People were literally giving them away as no one would pay cash for them
Lol

i think last night categorically answered in the negative the question: can leckie play as a defender? as soon as risdon went off we started getting smashed down the right (where leckie was). syria were coming into it before then (probably because every time milligan saw the ball coming towards him he reflexively braced for the impending ankle crunch), but that change made all the difference.
syria did deserve a point.
leckie's two misses and then juric hitting the post twice in 2 seconds basically cost us the two points. we are just not clinical in front of goal. sam kerr would have got all 3.

So (even allowing for injury), that was Kruse' first goal for 2 years. As a forward why does he get the gig without question? How many goals total has he scored in those 2 years? How many games played? As noted above he can't keep onside, his first touch is very poor, he has not been able to deliver telling crosses, he pulls out of 50/50s and waves around and curses the world when he yet again stuffs up. He scored just through being in the right place at the right time from a position where even he couldn't miss.
He and Leckie are talented flat track bullies who certainly do not look world class or confident when they play at this level. They have had enough chances and should we get knocked out on Tuesday they need to be part of the cleanout.
We need winners out there on Tuesday - I'd sooner have Brosque and Timmy up front than those twits.
Can whinge all you like about Leckie
Bloke is playing and scoring and doing well in the Bundesliga
Based on his level of performance at club level he is in the side as other than Mooy there no one else doing it at his level
Add in the fact he scoring somewhat regularly in the last 12/18 months and Ange has backed him for 4 years then he in the side whilst Ange is there and probably for another 6 months after Ange goes until the next bloke realises he is a clown
Kruse on the other hand has barely ****ing played

Cue the Van Halen references.
Honduras let in a last minute goal to Costa Rica away which has set it up as such
USA on 12 pts playing away at last played Trinidad and Tobago
A win guarantees qualification and a draw will do the same if there not something absurd happening with 7-8 goal turn around on goal difference
Honduras are at home to Mexico
Panama are at home to Costa Rica
Both are on 10 pts
Honduras -7 GD
Panama -2 GD

No it's not valid and deserved criticism
The formation and the 3 at the back issue is complete and utter shit
The carry on from Joe public who have **** all understanding of the intracacies in football formations has been over the top
Ange no doubt is stubborn and does things HIS way but he has always done that
Our qualification campaign so far yes it disjointed yes it hasn't exactly been smooth sailing but people seem to forget we doing it with some shit **** footballers playing at very average standards professionally and we have to keep doing it with a fossil out thete in Timmy for someone with experience of qualifying for a WC

Yes it is. Players arnt comfortable with this system or are played out of position or are picked and played when not match fit. This all comes down to Ange sticking with this system and making his squad/tacical selections.

The world has moved on from the Barcelona ticky tacky and Ange has struggled with the changeover.
We should let them have it at the start and score first - not play the system and be patient, which worked so well against the Thais.....
If Syria score first there won't be much game to watch, just lots of writhing, sniping and kicking balls away.

Players aren't ****ing good enough
Could play 4-4-2
Could play 4-3-3
Could play 4-5-1
Could play whatever formation you want
Could play kick and rush
Could play whatever style you want
Could pick 11 different players altogether
Will not escape the fact this is a poorly talented lot of players

The Memba is talking some sense here. Our 'international' footballers have the touch of a rapist. The system isn't the problem. Nor is the coach.
I think it is important to note, that throughout this campaign, playing this same formation/system, we have only lost 1 game.
Players playing out of position - It's really only been Leckie and it was highlighted last week when he was moved back to the wing back position Ange has persisted playing him.
I'll see if I can find it, but Simon Hill wrote an interesting article post Syria on Thursday. Basically said how Australia, as a footballing nation, might be a little arrogant in their perception of Asian Football. That maybe we underestimate it. He used the A-League as evidence - of the 45 (ish) visa players in the A-League, theirs only a handful, maybe less, that are from our confederation. Made and interesting read and probably isn't too far fetched.
**Meanwhile, it's been reported Mooy has been benched tonight.

I think we definitely are arrogant / entitled that we deserve to be at the world cup. Wales got knocked out of qualifying today - this is a team with Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and some other players better than anyone we have playing for us. They recently made the semis of the Euros.
Its also easy to see whenever we play these "minnows" that we should apparently be mopping the floor with in Asia that they usually have players with more technical skill than us, despite the infrastructure advantages we would enjoy over most of them.
Don't get me wrong, I think we should be able to qualify - but its not as if it would be a huge failure to not do so. Most of our current players are not that good, and there will be teams better than us in Europe and South America not qualifying.

I think this is only due to the fact that Mooy and Rogic are trash together.
Plus if he’s starting Cahill then Rogic is the only bloke capable of scoring for us.
Prob pack the mids with Luoungo Troisi Milligan and hope for a miracle from the 2 bags of walking arthritis up front.

i actually feel really sorry for Kruse at the moment.
as punchable as his face is, the bloke is so low on confidence at the moment.
the only thing you can put it down to is his body having betrayed him time and time again, it must just destroy you.
what doesnt help is Cahill screaming at him (and others) no matter what he does. Cahill gave him bucket loads all game then the one time Kruse needed to shoot he tried to tee up Cahill to keep him happy.
im beginning to really despise watching Cahill on this team.
also, this is Leckies best game for as long as i can remember.
Member though is bang on as usual, 1st touch by majority of these blokes is honking.

We are gash on all angles.
Over engineered play, defence flimsy unorganised and no confidence in each other, takes 3 passes to go where a one touch should've gone, we're easy to read in all areas, zero flare, Ange is a one trick pony in too many areas, players simply dont have the class either.

In part i agree with this sentiment and if anything it just goes to show what a sad situation we as a national team find ourselves in when we are relying on a 37 year old to pull us out of the shit time and time again with his nogg'n.
Somehow the Australian team lost its way with blokes leaving Australia to play overseas in the hope of there game going to the next level ie Leckie Kruise etc but they have not improved in the way we need/ed them to. I look at blokes like Nathan Burns and wonder " if only ". I did not have much time for the late Mike Cockerall particularly given he made a career out of giving his opinion but when jets fans dare voice our opinion about his old mate Phil Stumblins all of a sudden giving an opinion was a no no. He did though however put together a very interesting read in regards to Nathan Burns about that next step and being the next Harry of Australian football and by my reckoning and this is IMO but you could also add players like Rukavytska and Vidosic. I know Ruka played tonight but a few years ago he looked like potentially being very handy but he and many others have just not found that next gear. Too many have got lost in o/seas club wilderness and lack of game time has seen them not improve enough or as much as we would like or think they would.
We have exported plenty now from the A League but IMO the improvement to there game is negligble and this is why the national team stinks at the minute. I don't know what is worse sometimes, being made to sit through a Nix game and listening to those commentators or watching the Socceroos rely on a ageing player have to save our asses all too often.

Firstly does Milligan do a good StevieG impersonation or what
Secondly what the **** was Sainsbury doing??
He neither took the bloke with the ball nor took the goal scorer
Amatuer defending really. Yeah I understand he left exposed by Stevie G in front but we had blokes about and no one took anyone
It was actually a 2 v 4 situation and Sainsbury didn't step up and force one offside nor close close the **** down with the ball
The quality of the final ball though was exquisite. How come our blokes can't play passes like that ??

I agree with Sainsbury however bloke was immense for the rest of the game. It can't be understated how much of a quality player the Syrian no.9 Ol Sama or whatever his name is. He was controlled by Sainsbury much more than last week.
Also Degenek tackle in the 118min mark in the box... Holy ****ing shit what a ballsy move. That for me is the highlight of the game.

I don't care if there is a 67 year old on the field if he consistently scores goals. The problem I had was you put Timmy there and didn't play the football to utilise that strength. Too many times they tried to walk the ball in and too many times players like Kruse were in a position to cross but cut back and then passed to Mooy or Rogic.
Just try something different now and then and be more direct, but Ange's mantra is to stick to the system. I recall a game the Roar had against Wellington at home in Ange's last season. Wellington went 1-0 up and at no stage did a Roar player launch in a cross. It always went back to MacKay or Broich, backwards and forwards across the field. It was boring to watch and the gaps they were looking for didn't appear.
The quality of the players we have does not suit the style of game Ange wants.

I thought we were great. Our passing was excellent for much of the game, except for the crossing.
Syria played in an extremely compact formation. When good players do that - and the Syrian players are good - it's always hard to score.
We deserved to win easily. In the end, we won tough. Whatever, it was the fair result.

There was some good passing at times. Too often I felt blokes played a soft sideways pass for no gain instead of fizzing one up the middle to the advanced midfielders, which is when we were able to threaten. The surface seemed a fairly slow, there were quite a lot of underhit and soft passes.
Leckie is actually a good player when he is allowed to play as a winger and take on his man. Also pretty good in the air. He's not a good defender and he's not a good passer, so asking him to stand on the sideline and receive the ball then play it inside over and over is no good.
Majority of the crossing from the left was woeful, mainly Kruse and later Rukavytsa. Kruse was pretty honking to be honest, but could be what senor plague mentioned about confidence and getting backing from teammates.
I don't know if its that the players are not capable or that they've just had it stamped out of them by Ange valuing possession too highly. But we need to take more risks in the final third. Try the little flicks and first time passes. Try taking on the man when its on. Whip a ball in, have a shot etc. We don't need to play direct but if you only ever play a pass that has a 98% chance of success you'll never get anywhere. Troisi is one that did try some invention up there and nearly came off a couple times. And Mooy when he was able to get further up the park.
I agree with Sainsbury however bloke was immense for the rest of the game. It can't be understated how much of a quality player the Syrian no.9 Ol Sama or whatever his name is. He was controlled by Sainsbury much more than last week.

But that really is the problem with Sainsbury
For 89 mins he plays well. But there that 1 cock up in him
The cock up that managers around the world see and then use that as a reason to knock back signing him
Same with the penalty in the first leg. He back there marking no one for a cross into the box in the last 5 mins and Leckie marking the striker.
Amateur mistakes really
