Their W-D-L record on the opening day is 2-3-4.

PREDICTION:
The Jets enter the new season with the biggest upheaval off the field the club has seen in their 10 years. The club have welcomed 10 new members to the playing group with players such as Trifunovic and Leonardo an unknown quantity to most fans.
The team will face a tough test from the visit to Wellington, who themselves have a relatively quiet off season in first team recruitment. Their biggest loss is the departure of leading scorer Nathan Burns - a similar situation the Jets find themselves in with the departure of Edson Montano.
However, it can be argued the stigma of Wellington being an unhappy hunting ground for the Jets is turning. Having previously gone 8 matches without a win in Wellington, the Jets have lost only once in the last 5 games. The key battle will be the focus on defence and mental strength, attributes new coach Scott Miller has identified as fundamental for his teams, late in the match. More than half of goals (30) conceded last year were in the last third of a match, 17 in the last 15 minutes. This is an area of strength of Wellington at home. If the team's only competitive hit-out so far against Perth in the FFA cup is anything to go by, the hunger, desire and speed of ball movement has increased from last year's showings.
History is also not on the side of new coach Scott Miller. The Jets have won only twice on the first day of the season, both of which were at home, while only two new Jets coach have won their first A-League match - Gary Van Egmond and Branko Culina. However, both those coaches first wins came against New Zealand teams (Knights and Phoenix) and one of the Jets two first round wins were also against the Phoenix on a day when Jason Hoffman scored twice.
With expectations low after 5 years of little success and having been written off by most pundits, the Jets should enter the match with little pressure. But after a successful period off the field with the Jets being removed of Nathan Tinkler, gaining new sponsorship and a renewed focus on engaging the community, the time has now come to deliver on the park. Newcastle supporters have mostly stuck by the club and now is the time to repay their faith.
1-1 Draw

To me, the fact that Milos is having issues getting a visa is a disgrace. Why the **** do we have a club in a country where not all of our players can potentially play? It's a joke.

Generally speaking visas for Australia and NZ are pretty much same same.
If you can get one for Australia you get one for NZ just as easily.

Yeah, meant why should Aus clubs sign players and have all paperwork signed off for them to play in that country, then not be able to get them to play 1 club coz of visa issues.

Have heard very little about the performances of Leonardo so far. With the mid week Herald article with Miller talking up Mitch Cooper, can see Cooper in the starting team and Leonardo on the bench
When Wellington has scored first (15 occasions), the Jets have never won and only come back to draw twice
Well that should settle the game nice n early

When did we sign Milos?
NZ immigration "aim" for visa processing to be done in 25 days - I'd reckon that's working days given it's a government agency, so five weeks processing at best- and their own website says they only hit that target 75% of the time. Paperwork needs to include documents from current employers for special event visas, so the paperwork can't even be submitted until Milos is a contracted jets player.
Easy option to assume the club ****ed up.... Years of previous **** ups make it a reasonable assumption, but other clubs have issues with getting their visa players into NZ.
Jetmaster

Fully agree...thought exactly the same thing. Milos had to sign on the dotted line before a visa could be applied for.
Then you have to abide by the standard timeframes like every other government service. The world is much more cautious these days in granting status so you just have to be patient.

So if he can get a visa to be in Australia at the moment it is safe to assume he has a work visa and not a tourist visa.
If he has a tourist visa then he is legally not permitted to front up for anything related to the Jets such as Training and Media as he is in breach of his tourist visa
As he has been appearing at training and Jets promotions it is logical to assume he has the correct visa which is a working visa.
Secondly the club have had the last 4 months to sign a foreign striker. Leaving it as late as they have done to do so is no fault other than their own.
If he not play on Sunday then the issues for his absence lay squarely at the feet of the Jets for not getting their squad sorted and settled much earlier

Agreed. But that's got little to do with NZ immigration and someone at the club submitting paperwork.
Australian 401 visas take 8-12 weeks. This process needs to happen before the Jerks are considered his employer by NZ Immigration, so the two visas needed can't be applied for simultaneously. Add the 25 working days for the NZ visa and you're looking at 13-17 weeks providing both government agencies meet their target in terms of processing time.
13 weeks ago.... Was the middle of July.
Bridges could have been in and out of the squad injured twice.
The club have said all along that due diligence will be done to make sure the right person turns up, we're at the arse end of the world paying peanuts, getting someone decent might mean we need to sacrifice playing them in NZ.
Shit takes time.

Again agree with Gaz...we were cactus 4 months ago. The damage done at the start of the year will take a year or two to fix....minimum.
If you are not happy, just vision what we would be like now if Tinks and Stubbs were still in charge.
We have no money and as yet, no owner...a bit of levity needs to be applied here.

Agree mate, in reality we are still a club in ownership transition with FFA currently our "interim" owners.
Pointless to be too critical of the club whilst it goes through this transition period, just go with the flow.

I dont want to jinx things but are we about the only club in the league that have a full squad to choose from in rd 1? We've had a very good run in pre-season with the lack of injuries. I hope it continues. Prob down to Miller's background and Jones's initial input.

With pretty much the whole team set in stone, the only big question marks are the no9 and no10 spots.
Miller has spoken pretty highly of Cooper this week but Leo has been with the team several weeks now. Milos is likely for the bench it seems with him only just getting clearance.

Expecting Brennan and Lundy to be the players omitted.

Literally posted a 1-0 graphic to my site's Twitter page as that went in. I'll take part of the blame for that one. Tough one to take on half time but a very winnable game if we play in a similar style. Carney putting in a great effort and good to see the whole squad getting behind the ball on defence.

We were pretty solid defensively against a decent side, poor old Milos was feeding off less than scraps though. The passion/commitment etc was good to see and hopefully sets a decent foundation but the lack of attacking intent will obviously have to change.

12-10-2015, 11:10 AM
We really struggled in the Midfield Watson was very ordinary and Polak was hardly seen in the game I think id rather Kanta there than Watson
No way, Watson and Poljak were superb. Would love to see how much possession the Nix had because we handed over the ball all game. Watson and Poljak always got themselves behind the ball which was why the Nix struggled to create any good chances.
Our attacking players need to hold the ball a lot better and not push the pass so much, but saw enough to to think that it will come given a few games.
Had to take in to consideration that a) the ref was an absolute joke, and b) the game was in NZ, where we always play like a pack of munters..
A few points I was thinking during the game:
- We seemed to be a split second behind the play. As in, the ball would drop and then the players would think "oh we should go for that", as opposed to be anticipating and there. Just didn't look that sharp.
- Watson looked nervous as hell and a bit out of his depth on the ball. I don't know, everyone has a bad day..
- I am a big fan of Lee Ki Je, normally he is really good, but he had a shocker compared to his usual standard..
- Cabbage Carney. Can attack and go forward, doesnt like to come back and defend..
- Birraz was outstanding (apart from his kicking game, but looked like everyone was slipping over on the surface)
- Milos looked awesome for the limited time he got on the ball. Very isolated there, but we were sitting back a lot. When he did get it though, he did his job.. Also knew how to milk a foul and waste time towards the end when it was necessary..
Its about time we got some luck and ground out a result like that. Great to see..
We didn't look anywhere near a finished product, but I still think the signs are positive..
Mark325
12-10-2015, 11:56 AM
For how little ball he got Milos looked good, seemed to have a bit of pace and some strength, good in front of goals and good time waster. A bit more service and we could have a top goal scorer
Leonardo may come good with a little more game time under his belt cause he was underwhelming all game. Good fitness, and flashes of a good touch and good passes but he tended to lose the ball often and turn over possession. Carney was on point once he started getting into the game as well, got a goal and an assist. Gonna be our main man this season. Enver looked alright, took a while to get into the game and didn't get much going even when he did.
Watson and Poljak did okay, whenever I noticed Watson though he was giving away fouls, average passing and behind compared to everyone else. Hardly even noticed Poljak, was hard at work whenever I did though, going from helping out in the defence to getting the ball back into the our attacking third. Got better in the second half, I thought Kanta was a lot more lively when he came on and should be the starter next to Watson
Lee had moments of brilliance but was mostly pretty poor. The play and cross to set up carney was beautiful but outside of that performed well below the quality we've all seen him play at. I hardly noticed Hoffman all game. Mullen and Boogard are overall a solid backline, Boogard looks good as we know, thought he was unlucky with the second yellow.
Birraz was a beast, made some incredible saves and even went in on some crosses and made a few risky saves that could've got him clocked. Only thing is his distribution off goal kicks is shocking, not one went to our player and by the end kanta just started taking them.
Overall there was positives and negatives. With a few more games to gel and some of these players coming into their element we're gonna have a good team that can challenge for top 6, definitively better then last season already
Remember Miller is focusing on defence at this stage. Ill be happy with parking the bus and winning 1-0 every week

Parking the bus and winning is one thing.
The way we do it though is ****ed.
After Milos got the goal to put us up we offered nothing on the counter and never really looked solid that we were gonna see it out.
Either we look to counter and make it 3 or we have to take more control of the last 20 mins when in front.
It was only down to a poor Nix outfit who were not on their game that we held on.
This white knuckle shit this club employs to hold on to a win needs to change big time otherwise we will drop more points late playing as we did yesterday

I'll be pissed off if we play one up front and two holding mids at home, home is for attacking.

If Andrew Durante had not been injured early, might have been a different story too.
Nix defence went to shite after that
I think being down to 10 men had a say in the last 10 mins.
They won - end of.
Whether we had 10 men V the Nixs 12 is irrelevant
We have tried closing out leads like that for the last 5 years. There is a consistent negative pattern we have as a club where we try to shut up shop and stop playing.
We don't even look to break hard and score on the counter. We show no interest in scoring in the last 20 mins when we lead. Opportunity is there to punish the opposition yet we dog it and refuse to try

MFKS, I have some concerning news for you. You've won the lottery. I'm sorry to have to deliver this awful news to you on a public forum. #PrayForMFKS

So apparently Bonevacia's goal was actually accredited as an oggie to Ki-Je.
Yeah...from the camera shot from behind it looked like it was going to spray past Birraz LH post!

Didn't watch. No fox.
Great result.
Result.... an important word.
My concern, our two centre backs, one gets two yellows the other gives away a penalty.
Hope JP bangs their heads together.
****in' good result though!!!!
Chelsea won an EPL title playing like that with far superior players.

Tough three weeks now against the three top sides - if we can win one of these games (or maybe even two draws), we are well above expectations already.

New Coach
New Players
New System
Nix are a fluid attack-minded team
and your away from home....
Great choice of tactics to start the season with.
Also Member you need to get some perspective mate. We won 3 games last year and haven't made the finals in forever... we need to become a team that can compete in the league before we can start picking and choosing how we want to play. We hired a Fitness coach who's experience is in the Championship. We were always going to start off playing like this. Once we've played say 5-10 games we can properly comment on his tactics.
Until then we will have to stick to telling the Gypos that they havent won our love yet and giggling at the audacity of that first half bicycle/half salmon dive miss from Milosh... Hasn't he seen his own head lately??? Use that you tit! haha.

But aren't we a top 3 side along with scum and brisbane?

Top three "tipped" sides.
The ones the Fox team spunk over every week.

Mullen and Boogard are both very risky defenders. love to dive in and make a challenge and sometimes in very poor positions. They are a definite upgrade on what we had, but cards and penalties are par for the course when the play.
There will be plenty of opportunities for young Jackson or muata marlow this year (obviously starting next week with Boogard's suspension)

The Member is right on this one.
Jets have changed nowt since last year.
It's in their heads.
A decent coach would have turned that around.
Yet to see anything that suggests it has.
Good win, Carney is still a fat ****.
New striker looks old and slow but smart enough to make up for it.
Birra still looks like a kid pretending to be a grown up.

Carney on the way to being our team cvnt this year, something we have lacked recently.
Someone tell Carney its time to let it go.

I am always the first to dap you up when you make a good point.
I'm also generally the first to point out when you're being an absolute pelican.
I'm like Bill O'Reilly and Fox News, fair and balanced.
