What times Kick Off??
I need to organise my schedule around it.
Not ****ing good last week when I got 2 calls from Thailand during the match because I told someone the wrong time.
Saddest part is when the first call arrived I was more interested in talking than watching the game.
Second call was good it came as Boogaard got sent so it stooped remote flying at the tv

First test of depth in this game. If Jackson is still out injured and with Boogs out suspended, we may need to call up an NYL defender to the bench. Is Cowburn playing NYL?

That would be ideal, only if we have an NYL DM we can call up to the bench.
With only 3 DMs in the squad these 3 are going to do enormous amount of defensive work this year given the possession we had last week. I would always have a fresh DM on the bench as they will be needed every game.

Well I'd say kanta starts at centre back, Marlow covers him, cooper fills in the midfield and then one of the young guys like radivan, baressi or Lundy to cover attacking mid and wing

In that scenario, you are replacing a defender in the squad with attacking midfielders and there is no one to cover for Watson or Poljak when they run out of legs on 60-70mins, like they did against the Nix.
I would rather see someone like Andrew Pawiak called up to the bench to come on late in the game

If our entire game plan this Saturday involves another 90 mins of parking the bus I will be not impressed.
Our game plan can be built on commitment and defensive structure as a starting point but FFS we have to have a go in the attacking third as well.
We are at home we need to be entertaining the fans and getting the crowd into the game and the best way to do that is by having a ****ing go

Listening to NBN last night it sounds like Kanta will slot into Boogs position. Lee Ki-Je is also a doubt with his hamstring injury. That's a concern for me.
Personally I would start Jackson for Boogs because we need some experienced legs on the bench to come on after the mids have busted their gut. Left back I've got no idea. Maybe put Carney there, switch Alivodic and put Brennan or Haliti out right

Jackson is in doubt with a quad injury too. I think its a little funny we sign squadies as backups for injuries/suspensions but when this happens they always seem to be either injured or not good enough.

Muata is ahead of Jackson at the moment i thought? So he would have slotted in to centreback ahead of Jackson, although redundant if Jackson is injured at the moment.
Would Cowburn slot into RB and Hoffman move across? Not sure who's better with their standing legs out of those two?
I don't think Kanta has the man-marking ability to deal at centre-back without Boogard to direct him around but if they play him there surely Cooper would be backup for centre-mid? He can cover alot of ground over the entire 50-60 mins he plays??:rof: But seriously he's the most well-balanced option. Alivodic would be ok, but i reckon he wouldn't read the game well enough to help out defensively?

Peter Green has refereed the Jets 20 times during the A-League
The Jets have a W-D-L record of 6-3-11.
Green refereed the last match between these two clubs - a 4-3 win in Round 26 to Sydney.
The Jets have lost the last 4 matches with Peter Green in charge.
Green has issued 37 yellow cards to Jets players and 20 yellow cards to opposition players.
Green has give 4 penalties in Jets matches. 3 were in a single match against the Brisbane Roar (Preliminary Final). The other was the last match against Sydney FC, which Andrew Hoole converted.

SYDNEY FC coach Graham Arnold hit back at tactical criticism from young Newcastle Jets coach Scott Miller by reminding his rival of the looming threat of the axe at the troubled club.
With just one senior match under his belt, the opening-round 2-1 win over Wellington, Miller spoke this week of his surprise that Arnold did not play with a higher press given the talent at his disposal.
"Obviously with the personnel Graham has got, I'd play a different style, with the high press, but they tend to sit back and let us play," Miller said at the Jets season launch on Wednesday.
In response to Miller's criticism of Sydney FC's tactics, Arnold took a swipe at the 34-year-old coach, hinting he should focus more on avoiding the sack than publicly commenting on his team's tactics.
"It's a nice gesture from Scott to give me some advice," Arnold said before their clash on Saturday.
"I've been coaching now for 15, 20 years. It's the first time an opposition coach has given me any type of advice before a game, and we'll definitely have a look at what he's talking about."
Arnold went on to claim that the Jets were a title contender this year, following their season-opening upset of last year's surprise packets Wellington.
"We have to respect what Scott's doing. He's the most successful coach in A-League history at the moment. So we're listening," he said.
While Arnold mostly laughed off Miller's comments at the pre-game press conference, he delivered a subtle reminder of the trapdoor many coaches stand over, which is especially true at the Jets, who could come under new management before the end of the season.
See your ad here
"For me, always at the start of the year it's about not becoming a statistic of A-League coaching,’’ Arnold said. ‘‘The A-League is 10 years old and since I’ve been coaching in 2010 I think there’s been five or six coaches that get sacked at the end of the year.
‘‘I’m very confident that I’ve got a full watertight contract and most other coaches have only got three-month contracts, so I’m happy about that.’’
Arnold is one of the few coaches in the history of the competition who has not been sacked or released from a club. The Sky Blues will be sweating on the fitness of marquee man Filip Holosko, who is suffering from a grade-one hamstring tear.
The Slovak international’s injury is minor and he could play, but Arnold hinted at resting his prized signing away to the Jets as a precaution.
Holosko has not trained with the rest of the squad this week due to the injury.
‘‘Filip is a 50-50 chance at the moment,’’ Arnold said. ‘‘As to whether I risk him this week and potentially push him out on the field, and if it doesn’t go well, he could be missing for six weeks, it is one of those situations with a hamstring that sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry.’’
Defender Alex Gersbach is a chance to make his season debut but must also prove his fitness after suffering a minor hip flexor injury while away on international duty.
AAP reports: Adelaide and Western Sydney played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Coopers Stadium on Friday after Spaniard Andreu found the net for both sides.
The Wanderers midfielder helped the Reds take the lead midway through the first half courtesy of a headed own goal before dramatically salvaging a point in the 83rd minute.
Western Sydney attacked from the first whistle, and the visitors did not have to wait long for their first chance in front of 9442 spectators.
On five minutes, Mitch Nichols slipped Romeo Castelen in behind the defence, but the Dutch flyer blasted his shot into the side netting.
Adelaide broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, albeit with a slice of luck, when Reds midfielder Isaias dinked a delightful ball over the Wanderers defence to release Tarek Elrich, who broke through a weak Scott Neville tackle.
Elrich shaped to pick out a teammate inside the area but his cross took a wicked deflection off Andreu and the ball looped into the back of the net with keeper Andrew Redmayne rooted to the spot.
The visitors repeatedly wasted attacking opportunities until a poor clearance from Elrich landed at Andreu’s feet inside the box.
The Spanish midfielder jinked around a defender and picked out the top corner from 10 metres.
What a ****ing flog Arnold is.
I take it the dumb **** not remember what happened to him when he went to Japan??
Winning today will now be so much sweeter.

Ryan griff hit a penalty late, I think it may have been Sydney FC? To draw a few years ago. But I completely agree that is just such a familiar feeling!
I though we at least showed fight that we haven't for years. Our defence looked pretty solid again even without boogs.
Our attack was incredibly blunt, but it is something that can come. Id rather have a solid defence and to build our attack than vice versa!
My biggest concern is our, what seems to be, match fitness. I know we had 2 subs wasted by injuries but out guys looked absolutely spent with 10-15 minutes to go. Not just tired but out on their feet. Considering Miller is a S&C coach, I thought we would be running teams off The park.
As for players... I thought most did alright. Watson to be rested, kanta back in midfield when boogs in. Leeky back as carney forward will give us huge amounts more creativity.
Hope to never see Lundy again. That guy is not even close to A-league standard. I don't get to see many games locally as I play and coach myself but surely we have better than that around in NPL?
In the end, unlucky result given that we scored a fair goal and they struggled to create clear chances against us. But need to so better to really compete week in week out.

If we had nige and lee ki in the side that would have been an entirely different ball game. Haliti coming on at the end for Leonardo would have allowed a 442 to chase the game at the end. We have setup to be defensively resolute and hard to break down. Sydney may have had the number of shots they did but I don't feel that reflects whether they were 'effective' shots or not. Our first chance which fell to milos was the most dangerous effort after Sydney's opening stanza with all that ball.
Kanta looks like he has found his passion for the game again but needs to keep those tackles out of the game.. Although he was sold up the river with the pass..
Watson I think is more an option off the bench.. Kanta deserves a start.
Trifunovic will score many goals, leads the line well. Great touch.
Leonardo just needs to acclimatise and he will be a weapon. That drop of the shoulder and change of direction is worth the admission fee alone.
Can't help but feel that Scotty made the choice to rest ki je this week to save him for the big visit of victory who pose much more attacking threat.
We will finish top 6.

Goals change games. If Hoffman's (very good) header had rightfully been awarded, we would have won that match with ease.
As others have mentioned, we don't look like conceding every time the opposition has the ball, which is a nice change.
Am seeing some very positive signs, and the goals will come.
Seems like Trifunovic likes to have an audacious shot early on, shows confidence but hopefully he can be a bit more clinical as the season wears on.

You can't call Milos shit after that. They only got the ball to him in a shooting position like twice and he always had two defenders on him. bit more quality up front from everyone else and I think he can come good. Lundy was just...out of his depth. Whether it was nerves or ability I don't know but he was losing the ball everytime he got it.

Personally I'd like to see us change to a straight 433. Having our wingers do so much defensive work is taking a lot out of our attack. Move Leo wide and let him roam and have him and alivodic higher up the pitch so they can link with milos more frequently. Carney-poljak-Watson through the midfield. Obviously carney and Watson pushing on a bit more if we maintain possession.
Not panicking yet. Our attack will eventually kick into gear.

I think it is fairly obvious why he did not get much ball. They were playing with 10 men after Haliti was injured. I think we are in a lot of strife with no depth, they can nearly get away with covering 1 weakness but when another 1 or 2 are added we will get hammered.

Personally i think that Scott Miller got the tactics all wrong. You would assume, considering miller was a strength and conditioning coach back in England, the jets would be fit enough to play a high intensity and high pressing game. Unfortunately, they just defended their half of the pitch; 40% possession and 0 shots on target is pretty poor statistic !!!!

My thoughts exactly. There's a clear difference with this team from the last few years. In defence they have a clear plan and seem to know how to execute it. No team in world football is going to keep a clean sheet every single game. We will concede goals but jesus we're making it hard for the opposition.
In attack, we've got players who can attack and score goals. The transition at the moment is too slow and we seem so set on getting the defensive structure right, the players don't know what to do with the ball. It'll come though. Losing Labi early was a huge blow, combined with having Carney stuck at LB and without the forward bursts from LeakyG. Lundy is useless. What's happening with Brennan? Still injured or is Lundy getting picked ahead of him?
Thomas477

Our transition from defence to attack has been slow for the past 7 years. Van Egmond would've been successful, but we kept on being slow with the ball, which allowed the opposition to catch us with our full backs 30m up the field away from the centre backs. First option always has to be forward.
Jeterpool
19-10-2015, 08:34 AM
I think we look at this as a two year journey with Miller. This season, I'm not expecting us to blow teams away as it is about getting defensive structures and solidarity in place which is why we are looking to attack on the counter (so far). There will be moments of brilliance but there will also be moments of mediocrity.
Next season Miller can recruit the players he want and release those he doesn't want. He won't have players forced on him like they were this season with like-for-like contracts offered. I think that's when we will see how he really wants us to play
By no means am I saying this season is going to be a write off, because I've seen glimpses in the performances so far of what we can do. But I don't look at this team being able to achieve the finished article Miller aspires them to be.

One thing we did a few times that annoyed me was have possession in the attacking half play the ball all the way back to our defenders and then back to the keeper who proceeds to just try to pump the ball forward. Its a league wide thing that drives me crazy. There is so much emphasis on "pass, pass, pass" that teams pass out of an attacking situation to the point where we compete for a 50/50 long ball at half way.
I'm not saying they should force the attack, yes keep the ball and reset. You don't have to go back to the goal keeper to do that though. It so contradictory to pass the ball so much that the only option left is to hoof the ball up field.

I agree. We were on the counter and didn't quite have the numbers so we played it back, allowed Sydney to get behind the ball, then played it into the midfield where we then lost it again. Clearly it was an instruction, but it's not something I like seeing either. But we will get better and it wasn't something we did (back to keeper) in the FFA cup match.
What I also liked was Miller's instruction and coaching on the sideline. He barely sat down and he wasn't yelling or abusing the players (that I saw) but instead was guiding, adjusting and instructing.

I definitely think there are a lot more positives than negatives so far which is something i haven't felt about our team for a few years now.
The defence in particular, we look like a team that is really difficult to break down. It had to be the priority to fix and Miller seems like he is doing a great job with it at the moment.
Credit to him too, when you have a back 4 for first game, lose half of them for the second game against strong opposition and still look solid its obviously a system that is working.
And if people still struggle to find a positive, look at it like this...
At least we aren't Perth, they are terrible!
I don't usually like to get in to the BK vs Birraz stuff.. I don't think BK is to blame for the goal though.. Poor bloke wouldn't have been able to see a thing with the amount of people in front of him when it was headed..
As others have said, its more a question of where were the two guys on the sticks..

That of course all depends on the new owner keeping Miller on.

See I thought we had moved on from that! In the FFA cup game we NEVER did that. We passed around the back for sure but I don't think we even once passed all the way back to Birraz and it for the most part worked. so I don't know why they have reverted back to it.

In my view, we are doing it more selectively now. Not every time we have possession, as had been the case.
I don't mind it, especially while all the moving parts up-front are gelling.

We were horrible when we had to make the play. There's a serious gap between midfield and attack and Leonardo had nothing to work with.
We do look good on the counter but we have to improve when we're in possession.

I guess the counter to that is unless the coach specifically instructed players to not guard the posts then it should be on the keeper to organise that.
If that was BKs job then he failed and should cop the blame.
If it was the coach then he should wear some of it too.
If anyone watches the replay can you confirm if we guarded the posts while Biraz was in goals?

100% agree

Very true. Hopefully he has impressed sufficiently to keep his job.

We did once that I can recall and it wasn't until the second half because I specifically commented to Pv4 about it. But yes, it's been occurring a lot more since the FFA cup match

Was watching shootout last night and they spoke about this. Lundy was on the near post but as the corner was taken, ran off in to no- mans land.
Didnt really stand out til you watch the replay a few times but it was really really poor
