KEY FACTS:

General

The last match between these teams was the first loss in Brisbane in almost 2.5 years.
Brisbane won all 3 matches against the Jets last year.
The Jets have scored only 1 first half goal against the Roar in the last 3 years, which was a James Donachie own goal, and are currently on a 6 game streak without scoring a first half goal.
But when the Jets have scored the first goal in the fixture, they have gone on to win the last 4 times, keeping a clean sheet in the process.
Just under one third of the Roar's goals against the Jets have been scored between the 76th and 90th minute.

Players

Lachlan Jackson scored the winner the last time these two teams met.
Radovan Pavicevic's goal last season in Round 10 was the lsat scored by a Jets substitute.
Mark Birighitti has kept 4 clean sheets in 6 appearances against Brisbane.
Ryan Kitto became the 135th player to appear for the Jets in the A-League.
David Carney and Ben Kantarovski are one booking from an automatic one week suspension.

Coaches

Adam Taggart scored a hat-trick against the last John Aloisi lead team to play at Hunter Stadium
Scott Miller has the second best record of a Jets coach after their first 7 games, behind Gary Van Egmond.
The Jets are undefeated in 3 consecutive away matches. The last time this was achieved was back in 2011/12.

Can't argue with his goal tally so far but really, his output in general play is really quite ordinary. I certainly expected more and if he wants to have a cry and leave about comments saying so much then its no big loss really. We just have to make sure we replace him... which no doubt we wont!

Cowley shows a lot of promise and I think he did enough to justify his inclusion in the team.
I thought Hoffman held his own today against Broich as well.
Birraz just keeps getting better every week - I thought he was our best once again.
Overall, I thought the team did very well considering our two first choice centre backs and our two best strikers were not available for selection.
However, I am wondering what's going through Millers mind when it comes to substitutions. With a tiring Brisbane defence and the Jets needing a goal I would have thought Mitch Cooper was the man to bring on more so than Cowburn.

Not sure what game you were watching, Brisbane were all over us in the last 15 minutes, you could have thought Brisbane were playing at home the way they were attacking us, when we attack we have two holding midfielders who never ever get forward, it's becoming a huge issue as numbers in the box are extremely limited, even yesterday when we had the ball high in the oppositions third we still managed to have two holding midfielders holding hands with each other, it appears they are to scared to venture forward, maybe it's an instruction from Miller but at home we should at least attack in numbers

Pretty much agree with you, I going to be blunt here, have a lot of time for Miller and the new mentality he has installed at the club and within the playing group blah blah but he just seems cluleless when it comes to making subs. Leonardo's legs were gone as mentioned by the 70th minute but this isn't the first time this has happened, last week Trifunovic just wasn't up to it (now appears he wasn't fully fit) yet saw out nearly the whole game. Time and again we've seen him not make full use of the bench, Cooper in particular who has shown enough potential since last season needs to be exposed more often at this level is left unused. I'm sure he has his reasons but just doesn't seem much logic his substitutions on when he does them or the players either.

What a passionless, insipid lot we are in Newcastle. Kudos to the Squadron for the Banners and the singing and chanting but for a lively, even game which went right up to the wire that was a overall lame and pathetic home crowd last night.
People around me chatting away as if they were having a little get together not a football match.
I remember of years gone by when we had smaller crowds than the 10,000 or so but there was more noise and a better atmosphere.
The team put in a good shift last night against a good Roar side but the response overall from our home supporters was piss poor to say the least.

Without Leo our attack can be described as pedestrian, with him in the team he gives our attack some thrust and unpredictability. I think he is our key player, if he can remain injury-free for the rest of the season we may yet have a chance of playing Finals, without him....buckleys!

That's rubbish belchardo, Cowburn and Cooper are both over 20 so hardly youngsters and both had plenty of game time last season.
Pav and Kitto are both around 20 also, less experienced at this level than the other two but I would hardly refer to the as "lambs to the slaughter". Would rather they get exposed at this level giving them 20-30 minutes here and there rather then we all of a sudden get hit with injuries and they have to be thrust into the lineup....then it would be like "lambs to the slaughter".

More making a point that it looks like Leo will play every second week until he is flogged completely.

Poor bastard gets kicked from pillar to post, no Del Piero name protecting him.

Moreover, the coaching staff should know the players better and how to utilise them to the full potential over the course of a season

How unfit and lazy is Broich these days ? Not that he was ever a workhorse in the past - but in the first half the Roar made a few good breaks and he was 40 yards away from the ball sucking in the big ones.

I will be very surprised if he lasts another season. He looks absolutely shot.

Even Hoffman managed to take the ball off him on several occasions. Three seasons ago that would never have happened.

Cowburn imo should be starting this weekend if boogard or triffo misses another week and we have to move kanta to accommodate.

Cowburn has been fantastic every time he has come on the park.

I went to the youth game yesterday morning and cooper didn't break a sweat and still was the best player on the park easily, he needs more game time.

I agree our bench isn't the greatest and wasn't at its strongest on Saturday but cooper should at least be getting some minutes.

Do people think that Poljak has the ability to hold the centre of the park on his own like Corona did for Brisbane?

I accept Brisbane have more mobile midfielders around him in McKay and Petratos and I think this is where the plan falls down.

--------------Poljak-------------

-----Leonardo-------Cooper---

Alivodic-----Triffo------Carney

I was also very impressed with Crowley's workrate. A number of times he tracked back to pressure the midfielder and win the ball back which is something I haven't seen Milos do. There also seemed to be more versatility in the front third with him on. He moved out wide a few times and Enver came central.

I agree that I'd like to see more of Cowburn but I thought Hoffman had his best game of the year on the weekend and doesn't deserve to be dropped. Cowburn as the holder in place of Watson would be interesting to see.

Isn't that the Virgili argument though?

Cowburn agree with, how he hasn't been signed on a full time deal yet still blows my mind.

I agree with you. Cooper when he started against City was one of the most insipid performances I have seen in a jets shirt. And there have been plenty. Says it all that the game turned on its head when he was dragged and a defensive midfielder played as No. 10.

I think they are 2 different sorts of players

Cooper has received one half off football and another 10 minute stint elsewhere.

I would hardly say that is being given a fair go.

Admittingly he was poor in that city game but he wasn't the only one

Cooper has made 4 appearances this year. 1 minute Rd1, 11 minutes Rd2, 6 minutes rd 3 and the 45 minutes against City.

There are dozens of players in the HAL that come into this category. Look like world beaters at yoof level but when the time comes to step up they falter.

I watched the scum v wankerers game on Fox yesterday and look at players like Fitzgerald and think how the f^&k do players of his quality get a gig.

The standard of some of the cattle running around in the league is deplorable. Warren, Gibbs, our very own Watson and i have not even started yet FMD.

Oh, there's no doubt that there isn't enough senior talent to fill the 9 Australian teams that we have now... and it's a shame that people like Warren get a gig when there is probably an U20 left back just crying out for some first team experience to develop into something better than Warren.

Look at this, ffs.

I don't think Pojlak has enough to his game to work as a lone holding midfielder.

He's more of a workhorse and works well with a more composed partner. I've never been overly impressed with his passing ability or vision.

Poljak is similar in some ways to Caravella, it's funny how players like them seem to divide opinion in that you are either a fan or you are not. My opinion is that the coach and team-mates sem to love a player like this in their team who places the team above himself and works tirelessly, tidying things up with a minimum of fuss, keeping it simple, keeping the ball moving, linking the defence and attack. It seems that they don't do much but you don't really notice them until they are out and not playing, then you notice their true worth to the team.

Biggest difference is Poljak can pass forward, Uturn seemed incapable of that towards the end.

In slight defence of Poljak(and having 2 def mids).
We never use them in attack.
During the gypos match Miller was screaming at Hoffman to keep playing square instead of going the line to carney every time.
Hoff did it once and we walked the ball up the park easy then went straight back to hoofing it up the line for carney not to chase.
Meanwhile 2 blokes are standing in the middle of the park doing nowt. (Made to look even worse cause the gypos were down to 10).
If you're gonna have them there you need to incorporate them better in the build up.
We don't do that very well.

100% agree I dont get the whole playing down the narrow corridor when CM sit in the middle scratching their ass. People get such tunnel vision these days. Football is a game of angles.

The difference is when we play Kanta as a DM. Kanta is able to get forward a lot more and support.

And I don't believe that Poljak and Watson are necessarily to blame for not getting forward. We lose the ball regularly up front leaving the DMs to do all the clean up.
