Good note for Maryland to finish their season on, Simba with a nice result too.
Thanks for a good season everyone, I think its been a pretty strong and even comp overall - indicated by the fact that 3 teams in a tight race for first, a few more teams in a race for the fourth finals spot and two pretty handy teams in Merewether and Simba don't get a look in to the finals. And even lower down the table, we've found most teams to be pretty competitive and even Medowie have had some closer games in the last month.
I think its a good sign for the Zone leagues in general and hopefully all the clubs from this year can continue strengthening and move forwards.

With a bit of rain threatening to play havoc with the first leg of the semis this weekend, this email eventually came round from the ZFL committee today.
------
With some ordinary weather surrounding the area some questions arise regards what happens if…….?
· With all respect to safety play your matches.
· Preference, if not obviously under water, would be to leave it up to the Referee call which may give your pitch some more drainage/drying time.
If there is no alternative and your ground is closed;
· Make arrangements to re-locate the matches on that day. Leg 1.
· Remember to contact – ZFL (either Gail or me) of the move, your opposition. ZFL contact will inform State League Referees.
· If no alternative is available – reset the matches for mid-week; usually Wednesday.
· If the weather dictates that no reset match of Leg 1 is possible during the week then Leg 2 becomes a ONE off match – Winner through to the Grand Final.
· If the ONE off Leg 2 match is washed out plus any resets – the highest ranking teams go through to the Grand Final.

Good battle game to watch yesterday between Wallsend and Hamilton the game was kinda in the balance in the first half but Hamilton proven again to be the much better team. Watching only the second half last week seemed to be another bore-send effort I guess they choked in the end. Best of luck to all the teams in the final I'm sure there both gonna be crackers.

Bit harsh on Wallsend - "Hamilton proven again to be the much better team.", didn't manage to beat them in the regular season though. Personally I thought Hamilton were the better side this season but anyway.
Reserves today I think ended up being 3-0 to Uni. I thought Uni were the better side but their keeper did get through a bit of work too, had a good game.
Firsts ended 1-1 after Muswellbrook took the lead midway through the second half from a set piece. Westlakes equalised with 10 or 15 to go. Left another nervous end to the game, but Westlakes go through 2-1 on aggregate.
Good luck to all teams in the finals, reserve grade especially GF turned out different than what most would have expected I think but that's finals football.

Shame to see so many "reserve grade players" not available for selection yesterday in UNI's team.
Must be very disheartening to play all season then get shafted and not even get a spot on the bench for finals football.
Best of luck with Wallsend in the GF, you deserve to be there. UNI, not so much...

There was a lot of thoughts about that thrown around from our reserve graders too. I couldn't remember many of the uni first graders to tell if they were playing yesterday, except for the maestro in the middle (who wasn't) and a big strong forward (who wasn't). There probably were some first graders playing, but there are eligibility rules. I know our reserve grade was struggling for numbers big time the last few weeks and we found there were only a very small number of first graders we had that were eligible to drop down and play for them. As it turned out they were able to scrape together 11 for the first leg and 10 for the second from "reserve graders" and our preference was that reserve graders play.
Maybe uni had a less consistent lineup in firsts allowing more eligible players for reserves in finals - or maybe just a bit of foresight a couple of months ago.
Having a talk to one of the Merewether guys during the last season game, who needed Uni first grade to beat Mussy that day for Wethers to have any chance of finals, the word then seemed to be Uni "stacking" their reserves because firsts couldn't make finals. I think this kinda came to light when Mussy beat Uni from memory by double digits that day. I'm sure Mussy played great and all, but putting 2 and 2 together you can't help but assume that grades were almost swapped, to an extent.
But, eligibility rules exist (that I have extreme confidence Uni are abiding to) and if it truly is that much of an issue then maybe the rules should be changed for future. Bring it up with the Federations/NNSW via email and see if you get an interested response.
I remember playing a few years ago for a team and we had a guy play every single season game in reserve grade, but then played first grade for the final 5 games of the season due to a regular first grader being injured. Said player was then ruled out of reserve grade semi finals due to being ineligible. Surely NNSW/Federations could tweak the rules to base it on say percentage of games played or something, rather than just the last 5 games like was the case in that example.
But yeah, bring it up with your club and the Federations and see if you can make positive change happen in future.

With respect . id like to address this completely wrong accusation . I am the uni ZL 2 coach and what im reading is totally wrong .
Firstly iv have never over my 12 years with unifc ever "stacked a side" you will never get a more honest person than myself. Or in that fact the club. I for one would never , and never have excluded res players who have played a lot of games in that grade .I feel this is insulting to myself and the club. The side that took the field against olympic on sunday was a complete res grade side.. And yes we still had a few missing . The full squad has never been able to get on the park , often having between 7 -15 players out constantly out all season. The starting 11 between them may have had 2 players filling in first grade for about 3 games all season , and can be backed up on our clubs game documents. During the season We were never able to get a full complete first grade side as well.
Yesterdays semi , is a product of finally having our side together , if we could have obtained this all year you would be addressing the premiers . We also are now playing the way we should with our strongest res players available . Olympic are a good side and deserve to get the premiership on this years results , i congratulate them . I will praise any deserving winners , but i will also defend something that is totally false and wrong and slander to the club. This can be backed with records . those players totally deserve their win and place in the final. Olympic had their chances , missing 2 pens over 2 games as well . We wanted it more than them on the day.
So before misleading statements are made without facts and back up I ask you to think twice about posting false statements or just opinions .

Fair call mate, if that's the case its good to hear. Well done on making the GF, you were the better team in the semis and if you show up that way against Wallsend again you will be odds on to take out the win there too I would think.
Westlakes took out 1st grade minor premiership, so I believe we will be offered promotion and plan to accept it.

garrison - cheers for the writeup. it's refreshing to hear.
Now knowing what LRO has told us with the 66% thing - it seems to me clear that Uni haven't stacked their reserves and things have gone down like you said.
It's a shame for Uni as a club that you couldn't have that side run out every week this year because if the top 3 clubs in first grade have shown anything it's that a healthy reserve grade makes a healthy first grade - as seen by 3/4 of the first grade semi finalists having their respective reserve grades in the finals too. If Uni were able to field all those players who have now thrown a huge statement out to the other reserve grade teams by beating a side that was barely beaten all year, imagine how much stronger the club as a whole would have been. I guess that's positive signs for your future though.
Solely out of curiosity - does anyone know the points system for Club Championship? Would be interested to see how much of a difference there is between Club Championship and the 1st grade ladder, if anyone has that info.

With there only being two grades and first grade being weighted twice as heavy as reserves its to be expected. Having said that, as you mentioned the top three first grade clubs also performed strongly in reserves.
In ZL1 and ZPL you may see more variation in the order where a mid table club with great depth could make a strong challenge on the club championship.

If you have followed the eligibility rules then you are doing precisely what you are allowed to do. You must understand that people will be skeptical about you out of the blue having a full squad just in time for the second leg of the semi final. We can only go off what we see since we don't have your club documents and fact is all we can see is first grade players being utilised (if you don't like the word stacked) in ressies. We can only take your word that ressies players aren't missing out due to first grade players being selected in order to win the grand final and I sincerely hope that this is the case.
Nevertheless you got this far so good luck in the grand final I look forward to watching it.

Regardless of what we all thought or think from the outside, I find my knew found knowledge about the 66% to be pretty conclusive that regardless of who plays when, the teams you verse in the semis are pretty close to the teams you verse during the season.
Fwiw I only remember 3 players from Uni first grade. The big nice striker, the Peruvian (?) Midfielder and the canadian/american keeper. And I only saw one of those 3 out there on sunday

The 66% is pretty lenient to be honest. I was eligible for the semis for reserve grade (and played second leg since they were short from injuries) despite playing first grade pretty much the whole season. Miss a month or so from injury, come off the bench a couple times, miss a couple games from work and you wouldn't have started the 12+ games in first grade required to make you ineligible for the lower grade.
As I mentioned, any other clubs that weren't running with a pretty stable firsts lineup (whether this is due to performance, availability, squad competitiveness or other reasons) could easily have a large number of "first graders" be eligible for reserves come finals.
I think its not the worst system, much better than that last 5 or 6 games thing you mentioned a bit ago.

See that's the thing about playing for UNI FC. Loose lips sink ships as they say and UNI FC are not the most loyal players.
We have all heard from multiple little UNI FC birdies that you completely swapped 1st for reserve grade when you realized your season went to shit and players were putting in the hard work for a start in reserve grade finals football.
Look at the results for UNI 1st grade and reserve grade for the last run into finals...1st grade lost 9 games in a row whilst Reserve grade racked up the points.
Have fun finding your leaks.
Compare your squad sheets for the 1st round matches when you were getting absolutely destroyed against:
Olympic 10-2,

Even Medowie embarrassed you 4-0.

Olympic 10-2,
Simba 5-2
3-0 to Westlakes
Even Medowie embarrassed you 4-0.
Big round of applause for your plastic mickey mouse medal this Saturday champ, well earned.
I remember a couple of years ago in a semi played at Muswellbrook, uni reserve grade made some subs a few minutes after kick off to put 1st graders on. pretty sure they got pumped 5-0 and everyone was giving them shit from the sideline. In saying that though, you play for a club not a team, if you dont want to worry about stacking, go and play all age.
Very well done to uni today! Good close game wallsend fought for it an pushed the whole game! Westlakes did very well this year an i wish them very well next year! Thankyou everyone for this year us at hamo have had a great year an its been a great season an we look forward to next year!!

Silencelahm/suarez users ... :
Just to clarify since you seem to be expending your pent-up sour grape energy on attempting to muddy uni fc's name :
- Our lineup for finals, and previously, was res grade through and through
- We respect how well you guys played all season and have congratulated you on this. And I'll do this again - well done hamilton.
- We had our full res grade team available for tail end of season and finals rather than playing people out of position etc, hence our improvement
- You guys had a couple of your best strikers injured as i understand it? Further explaining the results
- Most of our res boys just straight up played their asses of in finals, can you not just ackowledge that?
- If you really think there is an issue than make a formal complaint rather than whining on a forum. (You will find out you have wasted your time but please go ahead!)
- Here's a little sample ; goalscorers in the final were Jordan, Ramin, Jake , Ben. Go find out how many 1st grade games these boys played all season. Don't worry, you'll manage, cause you'll only need five fingers (if that).
Good season all round guys, also credit to the Wallsend boys, you guys played well in the final. See you all next year!

To all four teams involved in the day, congratulations on your on field and off field behaviour and efforts ..... Charlestown city Blues were very happy with how the day went, and good luck in ZL1 next year to the westlakes boys ..... Geez yous can drink ... Thanks again.

Thanks to Charlestown for putting on a good day, I didn't hear our blokes complaining about running out of beer so you must have coped alright haha. The only minor grievances were probably liquor licence / FFA things, mid-strength after half time put a few guys off and not being able to leave the ground before downing the remaining drink - as I said probably nothing to do with the hosts. Field was in great nick and I only wish we got to play on similar surfaces regularly, makes such a difference.
Well done to Hamilton for winning on the day - as your captain said all 3 games this season were very tight and could have gone either way probably. You didn't get any goals in the first half but did dominate for probably the first half an hour and its a hard task for any of us at Westlakes to say we definitely deserved to win.
Thanks to all teams for a good season, plenty of thrills along the way. Can't wait for next year already.

Mate, we told you already.
I know players in your squad and you swapped your best players mid season. Everyone in the comp knows that you are cheats.
We don't need to make a formal complaint, im just calling it as it is.
You are a joke.
Mate you need to pull your head in.
Going around calling people cheats is just not on.
They obviously met the eligibility requirements which means they aren't cheats.
Do I think they had first grade level players on their ressies team definitely but that's merely from what i witnessed during season matches, perhaps they double up most weeks who knows. Pretty poor form IMO but well within the rules.
Wallsend could have played their top 3 first graders straight off the ressies bench but chose not too so good on them.
End of the day the history books have Uni defeating Wallsend in what was an excellent game to watch from a neutral perspective.
I hope both teams are successful on both grades next season.

Seriously - silence of the Lahm and Suarez ... You lads are just coming across as bitter little girls... You may be interested to know that the team that took to the park in the semis and the final is almost identical to the team who were pumped 4-0 by medowie with only a couple changes... Team sheets will confirm.. Infact that medowie game was one of around 10 matches we had around 13-14 players from our squad unavailable.. So a lot of week in/week out ressie players had to then back up and chip in for firsts... We've lost several players through the year due to relocation and injury..
So look boys - it's very simple.. either do something about it - waist your time and the associations time to formally complain where you will indeed be proven wrong and then atleast have the decency to get back on here and formally apologise, if you can build up the courage and respect to do so... Alternatively - just accept that you boys relied far too heavily on a couple key players who unfortunately for you missed the finals, enjoy your off season and get over it..
1st grade round 1... Uni 1 - Olympic 8, round 2 (after they switched reserve grade with first grade) Uni 1 - Olympic 2. Something in that theory doesn't stack up.
Fact - Only 1 first grade player (who played more than a handful of games in 1st grade for uni all season) was on the bench at the reserve grade final. Fact - he didn't play a single minute of the match.
A lot of hypocrisy here. Hamilton had 3 guys who played the 1st grade final that DEFINITELY played in the semis. 1. Short long haired midfielder (started in 1st grade final), 2. Bearded forward (think he was on the bench) 3. tall defender (who came on after 20 minutes in the first semi). LOL you guys are making fools of yourselves.
Go out on a limb and name 1. player from the Uni reserve grade side that played 1st grade for the first half of the year. Just one. Go on. Just one.

I now fully believe that Uni have acted within the rules, didn't stack, etc - but one player I know played in at least one round 1 first grade game was the Canadian/American keeper.

AKA The guy who wishes he was a quarterback. :gent:
I don't think anyone from uni is saying that noone from reserve grade played first grade at any point, in fact the opposite I think with saying they had huge availability issues. But more that noone from ressies featured heavily in 1sts and anyone that played both was a ressies guy playing up not vice versa.
Yep American goal keeper. Great keeper, but only played 2, maybe 3 games for 1st grade. I think one of those games he played both grades entirely as we were short in 1st grade. Uni coach could confirm the exact number of games. Rest of the year he was either playing Res grade or back in the states on holidays.
But yep no-one could argue he was a "first grader" dropped to play reserve grade semis.

Hi All,
With the amalgamation of ZPL eagles and ZL2 eagles we will be running a quasi-third grade side in an AA competition. Are any others doing this?
We are looking to play these matches before L2 home game kickoffs.
If any other clubs are doing something similar (or who have a current AA side that would be willing to hop on board) let me know and we can put in a request for them to be grouped in the same AA comp.
This means more revenue, and helps clubs prepare for life in L1 if they win promotion.

Dudley zl3 floated idea a few years ago of single grade zl4. Basically for teams in zl2 and zl3 to have option of a third grade. Had some support from some clubs but not enough to get over the line.
Games to be played before reserve grade and match where possible with other grades. Higher grades could have entered 4th grade in competition, creates more grades, revenue and greater club atmosphere. It also gives opportunities for clubs in zl2 to compete against zl3 clubs.
Probably too late for season 2017, but possibly an option for 2016???

This AA team will run regardless - its about being loyal to our players, trying to fit those from ZPL who didnt make NL1/didnt leave, in with a full ZL2 squad. They will train with the squad (and most will be dual rego'd) and they will play before res on home games.
More asking to see if any other clubs are doing the same thing, or if they are interested in doing it etc. Some clubs would benefit from an extra game on ZL2 day, it means 2 squads on the tins watching first grade..
Looking at clubs like Kahibah in particular, i know theyve got a lot of AA teams, surely there would be one interested etc. Maryland, Uni, the bay etc.
Im happy to do the leg work, even 1 club interested means we keep the boys together for an extra fixture per year etc

The problem you face is Saturday fixtures.
Some club struggle already to get AA games to kick-off at the time you are proposing, added to that the scheduling of referees and the Zone League Board asking ZL2 and ZL3 clubs to move fixtures to Sunday.
Then the problem you face with Sunday fixtures is that there are no AA comps on a Sunday.
I'm not saying it's impossible but it would be a logistical nightmare.

All our home ZL2 (and 90% of away) fixtures were Saturdays last year? Or are you meaning that there will be no room?
I guess its easier for us, normally theres nobody on at Alder Park before ZL2 as AA play over at Novocastrian 90% of the time.
I know personally we would have no issue scheduling it (and hopefully it would help refs for us as theyd have 3 games instead of 2!)
Cant comment on other clubs but i remember watching AA before us when we played at Kahibah in L3, Edgy in L3, Westlakes in L2 for sure (cant remember others). There was definitely nobody before us at Mussy, Olympic, Simba, Wallsend, Medowie, Maryland, and I know some of those clubs have a few AA sides that could fill that gap (if willing)
Just an idea anyway, if any other ZL2 outfits wanted to up their training attendance and revenue by attaching a ZL2AA side to their squad. We will be doing it.
It's a great idea and as you've said, most Zone League clubs play Saturdays anyways. Sunday games are few & far between nowadays - the way it should be!!

Would not have any effect on refs I believe, as refs for the AA game would come from a different association to the refs for the ZL games

Things usually can be organised between the refs.. (for situations like this) well they used too. 4-5 years ago. (Although the junior/aa ref associations put priority on there allocations)

It'd be a shame if a great idea like this AA/ZL one wasn't treated with some common sense by the ref associations. Surely there would be a level of flexibility if it went ahead.

You are correct that the refs come from different pools. The issue with refs would be that if you have a single AA game on at a ground, you may not get refs as venues with multiple games seem to get preference so refs get more matches/pay.

If your clubs fixtures officer gets to check the draw and proposes the changes at appropriate time prior to draw being locked in you would have a good chance of putting your AA games before reserve grade starts. For your home games anyway. Zone league supplies refs for your 2 grades, if given enough notice even though from different association I can t see why the zone league refs can't start one game earlier for the AA match, reducing strain on the junior league referees

Should just see if you could start up zl2 third grade. Find out what teams will enter from zl2 and any team that cant field a third grade substitute the third grade spot to any club wishing to fill third grade draw. That being zpl, zl1 or zl3 clubs.

Isn't there some animosity between the two ref associations at the higher levels? That would stop it from happening if they tell their refs they aren't allowed to ref those matches.

All branches struggle to cover all games as is, look at the number of games ZL2 and ZL3 sides had three referees for, let alone cover for the other branches.
You want more refs? Stop abusing them and driving them away from doing it. That's the only way to get more refs.
Or you know, you could do the course, join and help out, but that doesn't seem to be a popular option....

No, too heavily involved in other volunteering duties to also be able to ref would mean I'd drop one of those other things. For which no one else really wants to do.
