Tamworth FC - Bye

2015 QUALIFIERS - Urunga FC, Coffs City, South Armidale FC

Predictions - hard to go past Urunga and Coffs City who seem to be perennially strong. I think Port Macquarie will be the other qualifier. Oxley Vale Attunga are a dark horse, incredibly strong in NIF and have appeared in 8 GFs in the last 9 years. Strange that Inverell Joeys FC and East Armidale FC did not nominate. Both were fairly strong last season.

Northern Inland

Norths Utd (Armidale) 8 - 0 North Companions FC (Tamworth)

Demon Knights FC (Armidale) 1-7 Oxley Vale Attunga FC (Tamworth)

South Armidale Utd FC 3-1 The Armidale School

Tamworth FC - Bye

North Companions reached the GF in the league last year, but following an altercation at training between their coach and a board member a huge number of players have defected to Tamworth FC.

DK were belted by last season's Premiers, and Souths overcame a fairly slick school team that ran out of legs.

Next round is expected to be Norths Utd v OVA and Souths v Tamworth (pending confirmation).

Media wrap:

AFTER stinging Tamworth FC on Sunday, South Armidale now have their sights on North Armidale as they look to continue their FFA Cup run.

The Scorpions were the best Northern Inland performers in the nationwide competition last year, making it to the final eight in Northern NSW.

On Sunday they accounted for FC 2-nil to kick their way into the third round and set up an all-Armidale battle after Norths had dispatched of Oxley Vale Attunga the previous day.

For the Scorpions, Sunday’s win followed a 3-1 first-round win over TAS, and returning captain-coach Ben Wright was happy with what he saw from his side in what were hot conditions.

“We held onto the ball well and we took the chances that we had,” Wright said.

The good ones anyway.

Jake Pamment opened the scoring about 10 minutes in off a well-struck free kick from about 30 to 40 yards out.

“That got us on a bit of a roll and we held the ball well and knocked it around,” Wright said.

Jaime Wright extended their lead with about 15 minutes to go in the first half.

“It was a great solo effort,” Wright said, Wright finishing it by chipping the keeper.

Once they got that two-goal buffer, Ben Wright said they knew that all they had to really do was hold the ball and knock it around.

He said FC didn’t really trouble them too much but, when they did, the defence was up to the mark.

He was out there in the thick of it and thought they gelled well.

Their movement off the ball was also fantastic.

He couldn’t single out any standouts.

“It was a good allround team performance,” he said.

FC coach Ben Davis expressed similar thoughts about his side’s efforts.

“It was a good team performance,” he said.

“If the boys can all stick together there are some good signs there.”

The result didn’t go their way but Davis wasn’t too disappointed.

“It’s nearly 65 per cent a new team,” he said. “That was sort of our first game together.

“It was always going to take a game until we worked out what we are doing.”

Still, he was a bit surprised how well they came together.

“The second half was a pretty good half,” he said.

“We kept more possession than they did.”

They just weren’t able to turn it into goals.

But Davis was encouraged by the way they held the ball.

“We kept the ball and knocked the ball around, which is something we wanted to work on,” he said.

SOUTH Armidale have continued their love affair with the FFA Cup in 2016.

UP FOR GRABS: South Armidale’s PJ Wright, right, braces himself as The Armidale School’s Ethan Monk prepares to launch at the ball last weekend.
After making it all the way to the sixth round in 2015, the Scorpions have again started the competition in dominant fashion this season.

Following on from last weekend’s solid 3-1 win over TAS, South scored a comfortable 2-nil victory over Tamworth FC on Sunday.

That win sets up a blockbuster regional final against arch-rivals North Armidale this weekend.

The Ben Wright-coached side have had a strong pre-season and Wright believes that has shown in their two FFA Cup victories. “We’ve had some really strong sessions and that really showed on the weekend,” he said.

“The combinations are starting to gel.”

South jumped out to an early 1-nil lead against Tamworth FC on Sunday, following a brilliant strike from Jake Pamment.

After the Scorpions won a free kick, Pamment stepped up from 35 yards out to slot the ball in the top right corner.

The lead grew to 2-nil just before half time after Jamie Wright latched on to a loose ball and chipped the Tamworth FC keeper from just outside the box.

Holding a two-goal buffer going into the second half, South went into their shell and controlled possession, which frustrated Tamworth FC.

“We just held the ball and looked to use it all around the park,” Wright said.

The new Scorpions coach said the squad was keenly anticipating this weekend’s clash with the Redmen.

“We’ve always had a really good rivalry with them,” Wright said.

“It’s going to be a tough game, but we will have a good couple of training sessions this week and hopefully peak at the right time on the weekend.”

South will take an almost identical squad into the 2016 as the one they fielded last season, leaving Wright hopeful of a strong start to the season.

“A lot of us are the same age and have been good mates for a lot of years,” he said.

THE first round of the Westfield FFA Cup got underway in blistering conditions at Tuncurry on Saturday.

This year the Football Mid North Coast sub-pool of the tournament is being contested by Port FC, Taree Wildcats, Tuncurry Forster Football Club (TFFC) and Wallis Lake.

Port and Wallis were up first, with a Port FC side missing several key players immediately under pressure from Wallis Lake. Two goals inside the first 30 minutes really put the game to bed as Port found it difficult to gain any ascendancy at all. Wallis continued to dominate in the second half, adding another two to their total before Chris Cheers was marched, having handled the ball to stop a goal. Port converted the ensuing penalty to see the final score 4-1 to Wallis Lake.

TFFC were up next against a new look Taree Wildcats, who were minus key players Ricky Campbell and Josh Ferris and introduced several players returning from the 2015 FMNC NPL under 17 side. The Tigers on the other hand were able to choose from an almost full complement of players, and from the start really dominated the proceedings, particularly in the middle of the park, with new signing Blair Smith, skipper Jason Ward and Mark Mallia controlling the game well. After some initial missed opportunities, Jack Yeates stole the ball from Taree's Lucas Mepham and banged the opener past the Taree keeper. Yeates doubled the Tigers’ lead shortly after following some great combination play by Camilleri, Bindon and Mallia.

The Tigers could have doubled their lead in the following five minutes with several straight forward chances going begging. Instead it was Taree who found the back of the net next, following a defensive blunder that gifted the visitors their best chance of the match.

The second half saw the pace slow considerably as the heat took its toll. Yeates and Minors were withdrawn for the home side, and this saw Kianou and Chapman cause more headaches for the Wildcats. Constant pressure on the Taree defence saw Chapman brought down in the box, and Camilleri coolly finished the penalty to make the game safe.

Taree staged a late surge not excellent defence from Chick, Goonan, Mooney and Bindon saw McBride untroubled in the Tigers’ goal. Chapman added a fourth late on, and in the end TFFC 4-Wildcats 1 was a fair reflection of the match. Bindon was players’ player, and Smith was outstanding on debut.

The second round sees a local derby then, between TFFC and Wallis Lake, to decide who progresses on to play the winners from Northern Inland Football.

Bangalow and Suffolk Park won their respective Round One games last Friday night to stay alive in the Westfield FFA Cup for 2016. With Lismore Thistles also progressing due to Mullumbimby Brunswick Valley forfeiting, three FFNC teams will fight out the zone title over the next few months.

Bangalow Bluedogs took longer than they may have expected to get over rivals Lennox Head before eventually winning 4-1. The Sharks fielded a mostly young side and their performance would have given coach Paul Kirkland some encouragement. For Bangalow, coach Neil Fuller would have been satisfied with the victory, while realising that his side will need to step it up for the season ahead if they want to test the strong teams like defending premiers Lismore Richmond Rovers.

The second Westfield FFA Cup game saw Suffolk Park continue their late surge in 2015 that eventually saw them come from third to win the 2015 Men’s Division One grand final, with the Phoenix scoring an inspiring 2-1 win over Ballina. The seasiders are back in Men’s Division 1 for 2016 and the focus for this season will be on rebuilding.

Round 2 games will be confirmed within the next 7 days and scheduled around ANZAC Cup and the start of the pointscore competition.
