What are people's thoughts on Shearer's comment about Aguero being the greatest import in EPL History.
I mean, we already know he is better than Hazard, but has he already earned legendary status? Cause there have been some amazing foreigners who conquered the EPL.
He's in my top 5.
1. Henry
2. Ronaldo.
3. Bergkamp
4. Drogba
5. Aguero
6. Cantona. He was probably as good or maybe even better than Aguero but I didn't get to watch him in his prime so I don't have as accurate an opinion of him as others.
71. Bendtner.
72. Hazard.

Cant have Drogba in there too many seasons he struggled to get over 10 goals. and Augero has to be either 1 or 2 based on stats alone but Henry number 1 no arguments there. put Cantona in your top 5 and have Zola at 6

It's a big call by Shearer. Aguero has certainly delivered consistently but I don't see him (rightly or wrongly) in the same tier as those you mention ubt he could easily be considered and likely will once he leaves the Prem. Maybe I think that way because of the reduced amount of football I watch now I've got a young family? Maybe it's because i consumed football by watching the SBS Premier Highlights show when Bergkamp and Henry were playing so their skill is over-glamorised. I've said it before, Bergkamp is my favourite Premier League player (who didn't play for Liverpool). He was brilliant.
Regardless, I think I agree with your top 4. 5th - Aguero, Suarez, Cech, Van Nistelrooy, Torres... maybe someone from there. It's interesting how the players have all finished and their legacy perhaps increases longer they've been out the game. I know others won't agree, but someone like Sami Hyypia was terrific during his time at Liverpool.

Zola is another name I considered. interesting, but not surprising, how all these names are attackers/strikers

Without Zola and Cantona doing what they did, the rest of the blokes on those lists prob wouldn't have ever shown up.
Dunster has provided a very good contender. I ain't making a definitive pick but Schmeichel was way more influential/successful than Ageuro.
Plus Arsene Wenger.

Seven full seasons in the prem Augero has over 20 goals 5 of those season even with his injuries so why is Shearer so wrong for suggesting Augero is the best import
Also need to take into account of time spend in the prem and anyone under 4-5 seasons shouldn't get a mention IMO

Niall Quinn.
Harry Kewell.
Morten Gamst Pedersen.
Steed Malbranque.

nah the original question was 'if you were starting a football team tomorrow who would you have' so we ushered out old timers as were were looking forward.
i picked Hazard over most of the current crop because i think he is a young, dominant player who can boss a game (except when Alan Shearer says he DONT WANT IT ENUFF).

Group C is the only group of death from what I can see. (Inter aren't very good still) Hopefully Tuchel has his system in place before they come up against Liverpool and Napoli cause both those teams can attack.
Group D will be fun to watch, none of those teams would be automatic qualifiers in any other group so they've all got a great chance to go through.
At least City have to travel to Ukraine at some point.
Now that the plastic cup is announced we wait for the true Cup tournament to be announced. More teams, More travel, more goals, it's just more betterer! EUROPA LEAGUE BABY! See you there Stanny and anyone silly enough to admit they follow Celtic.

So much so his club performed better than Real by a long way so if you are having CR7 and Modric there you have to realise that their LaLiga form was complete and utter crap compared to Messi that why they were never in the title hunt and had to stasck their eggs in the UCL basket

Luis Enrique has taken them back to what works, hes pissed off the Costa/Morata shitshow* and gone back to picking his best David Villa impersonator.
With Isco and Ascensio (and Saul) looking like the engine of the team they were truly frightening against Croatia.
Still paying $7 for 2022 world cup, its prob as good as you'll get even this far out if the coach stays and players stay fit.

if any of you use the twitterbook, head over to @SwissRamble for a pretty interesting thread about Man Uniteds books for the past decade. If youre a bit of a nerd for the 'how' football clubs work its a great read.
Some interesting numbers though, they more than doubled revenue (278m to 590m) from '09-'18 which considering it was probably at the end of their 'Fergie peak' is amazing.
They also used to be locked in at around 42% of their revenue went towards financing costs. Now thats a very very scary number and something that can sink you so very quickly. Its now down to about 3%.
Would be very interesting to see how Arsenal (a club thats been 'thought of' as existing to balance the books rather than win titles), and Man Citeh, who are accused of being reckless spenders killing the notion of a level playing field stack up compared to United. Hope this dude gets their hands on them.

Jose's stance on Pogba is spot on. Bout time a player was put in his place
Serious question.....
I may be missing something, but what has Pogba actually done to need to be put in his place?
I get that he is a flash git, but were people expecting a bunch of goals or something from him because of the price tag? He has never scored a whole bunch and has been a cog in a wheel (and excellent cog, but not a standout Ronaldo/Messi type) so I'm a bit confused.
is is just that he hasn't dominated as expected for the price tag or is there more to this situation that I don't see?

Publicly speaking out against the managers tactics
Is that the crux of it?
I read the quote as 'We are Man Utd, we want to be dominant at home and we didn't play fluently in attack'.
But when you have a defensive manager that dislikes you, its probably easier to be boring yourself and say nothing. Unless of course he wants out. Which he does, and anyone would in his position.

The thing with Man U that defies belief with Mourinhio is that he has now had 5 transfer windows there so if his players are not up to scratch why has he not replaced them??
Shaw Smalling Jones Fellaini etc if they aint good enough why does he persist in playing them and why hasnt he shipped them out of the club if he deems them notgood enough ??
Plenty of money there in potential incoming transfer fees to bring in new players
Then you throw in the likes of Pogba Bailly Lindelof etc whom he has signed and doesnt seem to be getting the best out of
Mo though isnt an idiot and his public comments aint some clueless clown mouthing off but calculated psychology

A very simplistic view. Depending on what websites you read, Mourhino was not allowed to buy the players he wanted, there is some friction between him and some board members. As I say it depends on what you read.

2 reasons why this is all happening.
1. United don't need to win trophies anymore. All they need to do to make money is to sign big name players. Sanchez transfer from Arsenal was tweeted about more than the Neymar to PSG transfer. They have sold enough sanchez shirts to cover his stupid wages. United are a business, just like people say Arsenal is a business rather than a club who competes for trophies, they just do it better than us.
Pogba doesn't have to perform, he just needs to make them money. If everyone keeps talking about him leaving then Man United are getting free promotion. If Barca do actually want him, it will be such common knowledge that United can earn a decent fee for him and just have to replace him with someone else. Sell Pogba for 100 mil, buy Alli for 120 mil, United win. They would sell 20 million in shirts on the 1st day. The circus will continue and it won't matter if they win the title as long as they keep buying their own galacticos. (which in the EPL is a young player with potential to succeed mixed with a huge transfer fee to weigh them down. -Shaw, Zaha, Martial, De Bruyne @ chelsea, Lukaku both times, etc)
2. Mourinho wants his payout at some point this year. He had already won the EPL with Chelsea so all he had to do was keep them in the hunt and talked about as the biggest club in England. He tows that line very well, but now he wants his pay out so he can go to France or Italy and have a crack at winning the title there to add to his CV. If he wants to force his way out, pick a fight with the most popular player at the club (in the media's view) and watch the shitshow unravel.

Pogba has been told he's the best midfielder in the world. He believed it and wants to go to Barca and thinks he will be able to walk around and win the league every year. He will be a cancer in the team until he either learns or goes.
Funnily enough, because they already lost him once they can't just sell him at the 1st sign of problems without looking even more stupid than the 1st time. So he holds all the aces with this one. He can do whatever he wants and the club will struggle to come out looking good no matter what.
If it was my team I would drop him to the bench everytime he argues and then make Pogba stir the pot in frustration until the fans want him sold.
It will be great seeing them finish 9th this year if this morning is anything to go off.

In the most simplistic laymens terms.
Belokon already owns 20% and wants Oyston shares to make himself the majority owner, this is just a power struggle at board level that has gone on for over 5 years now.
Belokon has agreed to waive the debt in turn for Oystons shares but the 2 parties are not in agreement of what Oystons shares are worth. Oyston values his shares at the price of the debt owed +£15m however Belokon values Oystons shares at the value of the debt.
Basically this now just clears the way for the receiver to sell Oystons shares in the Club to Belokon.

Why ditch Celtic now, still competing for several trophies, to see out a season at Lester where they will prob finish right where they were gonna finish anyway?
He was doing an ok at Celtic yeah, and it seemed the fans liked him.
the benefits he'll get out of being back in the Prem surely are offset by the damage done to his reputation in the long term.

Celtic pretty much can't lose the SPL and can't do anything in Europe. Winning trophies in Scotland with Celtic doesn't add anything to your CV as a coach. He hasn't gained any respect since he's been there, hence the drop to a very good mid table side.
As soon as they got knocked out of Europe he was on the phone looking to leave.

He knew the club had reached a point where it needed a rebuild. But you can't exactly ask for £200 million to rebuild a squad that just won 3 UCL titles. He leaves, new manager struggles, he is given free reign to rebuild.
Kante is supposedly his No1 transfer target. I'm guessing that means one of Modric or Kroos are available.
Good news for us (Arsenal) is that they want Wingers. Which means some decent wingers will have agents trying to put them in the window.

I get why Bulgaria should be in trouble, racism is ridiculously shit, but the UK media and the team spent weeks stirring the pot and incite the ultras to do it. And then cried like little school girls once it happened. Then had to gall to sing songs about how racist Bulgaria were as if they've never thrown a banana at a player, or made monkey faces at them, or sung anti-Semitic songs during games...

Side rant. What happened to all the England players who said they'd walk off as soon as they heard any racist jeers or chants from the crowd? Did they realise it could hurt their qualifying campaign if they walked off and the ref classified it as forfeit? Maybe next time don't act like you're bigger than UEFA if you don't have the backing of your employer (FA) and can't actually go through with it.

yeah the English press made a thing out of the national team players being really grown up and sensible about handling racism because they are so used to copping it from home fans that they are now seasoned vets.

Spot on - dunno what the other outlets are like but the BBC has three "agenda" items it likes to push daily - women's football, racism and Manchester United.

So who are the racists again? ?
The first point is almost true, the majority of the world doesn't care what race someone is. It's the racists who do.
And you're saying it's the fault of the person who called the racist out that a problem exists, rather than the racist. They should have just shut up and played football and not listened to the whistling and chants directed at them because it's in their contract? Basically, if someone is at work they are allowed to be racially abused according to your logic.
Let me guess, women also shouldn't complain about sexual assault if they are at work?
But yeah, somehow bring up the Left again in the hope that the word wins an argument for you rather than any facts.

man oh man one day you're gonna read the posts.
the silence is on both the subject of the tweet at the centre of it all, which no one has addressed.
the silence is also on the one fundamental issue at the core of it all. Not the protests, not China, not Hong Kong, not democracy, not the money but the peoples individual right to freedom of speech. All any of these players had to say was "im not informed enough in China politics to comment but as Americans we have to respect Daryl Moreys right to free speech".
Thats all any of them needed to say. Now, the NBA commissioner ended up saying this in about the 30th moronic statement his PR team whipped up but by then the damage had been done.
Im absolutely fine with all the players saying "hey man ima be quiet and protect that paycheque". Ive no issue with that at all, its the fumbling attempt to remain 'woke' without saying anything is what the funny part is.

I feel like you're a 12 yr old kid who thinks "sports" are just games that EA bring out each year. I mean, never in the history of sports has politics or human rights ever even been remotely close to an issue. Players aren't even humans really, they are walking talking contractual agreements designed for your entertainment and nothing else. You would have a been a very unhappy man at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Also, side note, it's not "their beliefs" it's common practice for human beings to be against racism. Racists are the minority, not the majority. Don't let the guy in the TV convince you otherwise.

but heres the problem. The refs obligations and instructions are written down in the rules in black and white (pardon the pun).
but once we enforce the rules, it then goes off into the never never for a bunch of suits to decide.
same with racism, the ref can call it off, but no one has any idea what happens after that.
and fwiw, you are actually dead wrong as far as people bringing their 'beliefs' into football.
its in the rules, the same as offside, the same as handball the same as the whole of the ball being over the whole of the line.

It is a very liberal interpretation of a loosely word rule that would give him the ok to do it
The reason it is though an option is from policy of FAs and your suits you refer to and it would be them pushing this angle on referees to do this
Yes it would then go back to them to adjudicate but then is this any different than them fining Bert 5k last year for what were pretty mild comments about refereeing standards in the HAL??
The people making rules decide the punishment etc
It is all open to interpretation and thus becomes a cluster **** from the get go

So Racism is just a part of society and we should just accept it and try and ignore it? Wow you always find ways to sink lower and lower
Will racism be totally stopped, honestly, I doubt it. Been around for decades. Being serious for minute it is the reaction, fuelled by social media that is making this seem bigger that it ever was.
Go back to the 70's - Clyde Best and The Three Degrees (Cunningham, Batson and Regis) - they copped it when common derogatory words were acceptable socially and in media. Guys like that went through far more hell as trailblazers, didn't blink, stood their ground played football and won. They, and several others, are true football legends. After their efforts racism dropped out of the newspapers for some time.

So we got people taking offence blowing this up deluxe when it didn't happen to them
Where exactly is the victim in all this ??
Pretty silent it seems
That just as big apart of the problem here.
Outrage culture with all these Muppets taking offence on behalf of some other ****
These people are just creating mountains out of molehills when the victim makes less if a fuss than they do

How is that right? Or a simple molehill?
It's more concerning that you can't see that that sort of behaviour is absolutely fvcked and totally unacceptable..

I guess you're getting both better, and worse at the same time.

Probably fearing for his safety by a group of racists thugs. What do you want him to do, come out and antagonize even more racist Neanderthals? Do you think he doesn't deserve to be treated like a human because he won't come out and fight the guys who attacked him with bottles and spit and verbal abuse?
Hopefully the replay is filled with better people and Yeovil Town don't get punished for a small group of idiot fans. But if they can't control their fans, then the team gets punished.

Dave Justice left Halle Berry around 1996. She reacted by taking out a restraining order against him. Later on she spoke out about being in a violent relationship which led to her losing 80% of her hearing in one ear.
People automatically assumed it was David Justice that was responsible.
Some time after 2010 Halle Berry mentioned that the incident leading to her deafness took place years before she was with David Justice.
Ouch.
I think everyone now knows who it was now but holy crap pretty low act letting Justice cop shit for so long.

How can you make the statement that none of this is any of her fault??
She could be a total bitch in real life you wouldn't have a clue what type of toxic female behaviour she has
Doesn't justify the response of giving her a flogging as you don't hit women
But the reality is violence is a human response to poor behaviour
And I don't believe that people copping flogging never said or did a thing because that ain't how things go

I was around in the 60's and 70's and on balance things haven't really changed for the good anywhere near as much as the media / revisionists let on.
Anyone that referred to a person of colour in a derogatory way was pretty much jumped by the majority of people and pulled into line.
Your idea of how things were is nothing even approaching reality - it's just a sensationalised media perspective.
Absolutely true that bad shit happened back in the 60's and 70's but there's a lot of racist / sexist shit going down over the past ten years or so which would have horrified people back in the 60's and 70's as well with respect to social media abuse and legalized racism / sexualism / religious bias and so on now under the banner of "Cultural Fit".
I'd be confident to say that discrimination and hate crimes are more prevalent today than they were in the 60's and 70's - it's just that the distribution has changed.
EDIT: Just read the members response to your response to my post. Holy crap - it would appear that my post has given out the wrong message. That was not my intention. Nobody deserves to be beaten up like Berry was. But nobody should let an innocent man be subjected to personal abuse for ten years either.

Because we live in a world where women get the pussy pass so are denied the smack in the head a male gets when he carries on in similar circumstances
Doesn't mean that when some man steps over the line and smacks a woman that she didn't do anything to warrant it
Hell the don't hit women thing drummed in to men saves them all a lot of arse whooping
Because plenty of women cross the line with their behaviour as they aren't held accountable for their actions like a man would be thanks to this policy men have

i dont/nor cant dispute that. You only have to look at the reason why we are discussing it (a black man going to work getting called a Monkey C***) to see that its still around.
its just that any kind of bullshit like this gets called out instead of accepted.
TV shows like Kingswood Country and Love Thy Neighbour might not have been considered 'offensive' at the time. But today they are just not how its done. The world has moved on, and so should attitudes. Of course people take it too far (hating on Megan Markle because shes a snot nosed royal isnt racism, hating on Megan Markle because shes black is), Jussie Smollett was a perfect example. but guess what, he lied and paid a heavy price too. We dont have to put up with that bullshit either.

Because the range of tools and opportunities available for such purposes have increased as well as people's access to them.
I'd definitely say body shaming is a bigger thing now than it was in the 60's and 70's - not just for women but for men also.
Attacks upon peoples socioeconomic status today are far more common than they were in the past. The term dole bludger was not even around in the 1960's. It was a term developed by a Melbourne Newspaper using a photo of some well to do kids around a swimming pool who'd probably never been unemployed for a day in their life.
Today, you don't need to be a journalist or own a newspaper to spread such hate - anyone can do it with just a phone or a computer.
Narcissism in general is much more prevalent today than it was in the past but admittedly it's been my generation that allowed it to happen - but current generations have taken it to another level.

Love thy neighbor is only offensive to white people. In Nigeria and the Weest Indies it rates well even today because it portrays Eddie as the idiot / dickhead and Bill as the intelligent / voice of reason. It also protrayed Kate and Barbie [the wifes] as being smarter than both the men put together.
It's really a statement against racism and gender discrimination. To be pro racism it would have portrayed Bill as the bad guy and Eddie as a victim.
A lot of white people in the 70's found Love Thy Neighbor and Kingswood country offensive. It's completely wrong to think of it as being universally accepted.
