What has been the turning point? Has looked so energetic the last few games. In comparison to earlier in the season when he looked like he couldn't give two shits.

Probably because he's finally getting some decent service.
But what's impressing me most is how well he is taking penalties.

You needed the paper to tell you that? Blind Freedy could of told you that.
Question is, Keepers should be aware to it now. What will he do if they don't move.

I think I said elsewhere that Carney's method of holding the ball, then turning in and out a few times usually left Triff covered by central defence. He is now getting the ball a little quicker and it is making a difference - that in turn has boosted his confidence.
Could also be a confidence thing.
He didn't look so bad when early in the season he was getting some goals.
When the teams form and his goals went down hill he looked lost.
Now the goals are flowing he looks better

Best pen taker in the A League!
Seriously though, he's copped some flak but got to give him credit for having the balls to put his hand up to take pens in the first place. We had an illustrious marquee here a few years back getting paid big $$$ to play but I don't recall him putting his hand up to take pens!
Some are saying, yeah he's scored 9 goals but 4 of them have been pens....he still has to put them in the back of the net FFS!!!

Clearly Milos has his limitations. Doesn't press, doesn't work too hard off the ball and really requires service on a platter to be effective.
BUT
It works. Happy to see how this season pans out before offering another contract but can easily see enough for one to be offered.
We have this history of turning over so many players season after season that players like milos only seem to work out the combinations and hit their straps by seasons end. Let's see how the rest of the season pans out but could be worth offering Milos,Leo, Nobby another year to see how a full off season together will get them to gel

Fair point, yeah some seasons we may have got 1 or 2 all season. Four after just 19 games would be up there as one of the most prolific seasons for us getting pens.

First few minutes of the Derby and Milos is put through by Leonardo, sure he is on a tight angle but as a striker instead of going for goal as a Griff or a Taggz would do, he does some dumb back heel without even looking if someone was there. I praised him a couple of weeks back but for his pen taking but as our #9 he has to show more hunger and fight and scrap for those 50-50's and put some pressure on the opposition defence. Look at Berisha, he is like a rabid pitbull in the opposition defences faces or Fornaroli, such a gifted player who will take charge and make things happen. Then you have others like MacLaren and Santalab who are very sharp in the box and have the hunger and instincts to score goals. Milos is neither here or there.
If our club has higher aspirations for next year; to be contenders for a top four spot, we cannot do it with the current #9. Decent enough probably as a back-up option but not our first XI striker.
Am I being too harsh?

His hold up play was atrocious yesterday. Mariners defenders found it was to easy to dispossess him and the ones he did manage to lay-off were ordinary.

I agree with you. He has the ability to put the ball away, but the hunger and ruthlessness isn't there. How many good crosses have we seen into his area where he's a step or two behind play? If he threw himself at a few of these balls he'd be near 15+ goals. Imagine having someone like McLaren playing in front of Leonardo

No doubt he has ability. Particularly in the air. His first touch needs work and he does need to do more off the ball. However, he is strong on the ball and has a passion for the team. Give him another year.

i always read this stuff that he should throw himself about more, chuck himself at lost causes, basically be some dumb hybrid of berisha/mclaren/matt simon...he's not and he never will be.
maybe he's a relic from a forgotten time, maybe he just wasn't made for the dumbness and ridiculous ping-ponging 18 yard nonsense acts of the a-league, or maybe he was just having a bad day at the office. admittedly he wasn't great yesterday, but with alivodic honking it up as well how could he possibly do any better?
a bloke like the triff is all about timing, which to be fair was nobody's strong suit yesterday.

I'm torn. Something we lack in our front third is raw pace.
If a quicker player had the chance Milos had first up, they may have scored. It's unlikely they would have been run down.
If we have a quicker player, I also think it creates a bit more space in the midfield.
But Milos has good strength and has increased his output off the ball for the team considerably. He's also now a known quantity.
Will wait until season's end to judge.

Fair call but I don't think he has "good strength", compare the way Fornaroli; a shorter yet stockier player is able to hold the ball up and keep possession under pressure.
All comes down to $$$ in my opinion. Would keep him for next year as long as we aren't paying him ridiculous coin as I would place a 100% fit and healthy Labi above him in the pecking order.

Fair point. Players like Fornaroli do tend to use their lower centre of gravity to protect the ball. he certainly doesn't seem to have the strength presence of Heskey, for example.
We missed someone like Labi yesterday.

A dumb hybrid? No. I just want him to be on the same page as the blokes pinging balls into him, rather than a step behind. And I wasn't talking about yesterday but all season.
I also find it ironic that you of all people is defending a guy that doesn't put as much effort or energy into his game than what he could. Are you saying you don't want him to be a little hungrier out there?

He reminds me a lot of Viduka.
On his day he can be great but spends far too much time moping around the field not looking interested if things ain't falling his way.
I am also torn. With the right system and players around him he could get 20 goals a season in this League.
We also should look at foreign signings more long term than 1 year and see.
It is a tough call whether to back him again for next season or look elsewhere

some of you blokes need to go check out how many times he picked the pocket of the gypo scum back near our 18 (otherwise known as not his problem) because he chased them down for no other reason than he wanted it more than anyone else. especially late in the game, bloke worked hard.

I would retain him, especially if we can get some better quality in behind him. I thought Sunday was the hardest he had worked all season, he lost the ball with a poor touch at one point and chased 40m to pick the gypo's pocket back in our half. Leonardo lost the ball similarly a few times and stood still and threw his hands in the air. Unless we have new owners who are willing to splash some cash about (Marc Janko is off contract after the Euros) then I would keep Milos and try and sign a young Aussie back up. Maybe in the mould of Ugar where we bring a young Aussie home (Skapetis or Demitriou come to mind)
Love Milos.. (most of the time)
Keep him here..

I hadn't seen that bottom pic before.. haha
Poor old Milosh cops a bit of a bagging on here.
He has scored 9 goals this season. A decent return.
Yes he has missed a few sitters, but at least he has 9.
Yes he isn't fast and won't run around like a headless chook like Matt Simon or Tomi Juric.
But he does give us an aerial threat and something different to the rest of the squad. I don't believe that pace is the only ingredient needed up front. If you're relying on getting in behind with pace as your sole weapon then defences should be able to death with it.
You need a mixture. Look at Perth, they have variety - aerial threat: Keogh, Garcia, Harold lol, pace: Harold set pieces: Marinkovic, Castro
Looks it. Yeah..

Would have put this up earlier except some people had me (apparently) away last week attending an amateur stats conference.
Milos Trifunovic
Made 22 appearances for the Jets, all of which he started. He was substituted 7 times.
Claimed to be a 1 in 3 game striker, he lived up to his tag by scoring 9 goals during this period at a rate of 1 goal ever 207 minutes played.
Scored 4 goals in 3 appearanecs against Melbourne City.
Scored on his A-League debut against Wellington Phoenix.
Will leave the club as the 3rd highest number of penalties scored (4), coverting all attempts.
Will also leave the club with the equal second most offsides in a single season (28). Ante Milicic had 29 from 20 appearances in the first season of the A-League.
Also had the equal second most amount of offsides in a single match for the Jets with 6 against City in Rd 11. Donny De Groot holds the record with 8.
