why does it never surprise me when man united get what seems to be the crusiest group of them all?

mon citeh, fly through the group of death!

btw can someone explain how the groups are picked? i would have thought it was seeded like the world cup. my calculations tell me city won the epl, madrid won la liga, dortmund won the bundesliga & ajax won the eredivise. doesn't seem overly seeded to me.

boz-monaut

the seedings are based on UEFA club coefficients

details here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_club_coefficient#Club_coefficient

imagine how Ajax supporters are feeling about this draw

liverpool are rated better than a whole bunch of teams actually in the competition, and ones who have actually competed in the competition for the last couple of seasons.

i get it, it's uefa and not just champs league (but i expect this comment only from pool supporters).

If it is based on the last 2 years, then the ranking system is flawed. Liverpool should not be classed higher than Man City. Even then, 17 is too high at the moment in my opinion.

I wonder what time frame this is based on. I know it has the last 5 years so I assume that is taken into consideration.

How the hell does Spurs not get into the top 25.

Two 5th placed finished under Jol, League Cup win, 4th, 5th and 4th under Redknapp.

quarters in 07-08 uefa cup, ro32 in 08-09 uefa cup, did they play in europ 09-10?, quarters of champs in 10-11, not out of europa group stage in 11-12. so the best they've done in champs league is quarters, and they've only featured in champs league once. plus they've done not too much in uefa/europa league to talk about.

plus they've scraped europe-qualifying positions in their association league, as you've pointed out, for years.

i guess that's why they're not in the top 25 uefa-tournaments-ranked-teams.

pv4
31-08-2012, 09:26 AM
i'm also assuming most, if not all, of the teams in the top 25 uefa teams have won, if not featured in the top 2-3 of their respective leagues at least once. which, correct me if i'm wrong, hotsperms have nae done in a time that took colour photographs.

i feel sorry for dortmund. ajax were probably going to struggle to get out of most groups to be honest but they'd obviously be gutted with this draw.

thought Bale was fairly awful but then bobbed up for the (first) 'winner'. Terrible knee slide though. Will give him something to practice whilst all the good countries are at the World Cup.
Simeoné though, what a nutter. Why did he go after the Real bloke at the end? Anyone see what happened?

Tell me why with pretty well the last corner of the game would you not have 2 players guarding both sticks. Is it just something that doesnt happen anymore in professional football and only at amateur level. If theres a bloke on the back stick there is no goal there.

Same thing with the FA cup final Hulls 1st goal would have been easily cleared of the line if there was a back stick man.

As a goalkeeper the one thing I demand on corners is someone on each post. At that point in the game even the strikers should have been back defending so marking up should not have been a problem. Courtois must have been spewing to conceed like that!

slavish dedication to a defensive system often leads to shit like this happening. you have blokes running round like mad following players etc, and then they seem to forget the fundamentals of positioning on set pieces.

as a keeper as well, i can assure you that the defenders were probably not listening :rof:

parksey
26-05-2014, 06:02 PM
yeah as much of a fairy tale story it has been for atleti this season, they've been rather dour at times and you can't begrudge an attacking team like real winning the comp.

people have been saying that they were hard done by with real scoring so late on but did atleti actually create a clear chance in the game? their goal was a farce from a set-piece.

Real Madrid shits me because they spend so much money. Like, I know that's the business, but what do people expect, them to lose? Real winning doesn't excite me as a neutral supporter. I guess we all love an underdog. But Madrid play in la liga which recently is basically a 2 horse race each year with a random club making a challenge every so often. I admit I don't follow it much but it seems real disregard development, buy somebody that is killing it somewhere and pay a lot for them. Eg bale recently and Oezil after his breakthrough World Cup.

Absolutely (and I can't believe Captain Obvious hasn't shown up yet).

And for the record I think that those 2 are on a seperate level as far as being able to do things that no one else can (Suarez can do those things but his sample size isn't large enough to it him anywhere near those 2).

But I just believe that Iniesta has consistently been the most dominant player on the best team at pretty much every level he's ever played at and come through in the biggest moments.
I don't believe there's another player on the planet who can match his achievements.

As for Barca V Bayern

What a contest for the first 80 mins.

Shame Bayern are a bit short staffed. Imagine the greater threat they could have posed with Robben Ribery etc. Didn't see the final stat but late in the game Bayern actually had more ball than Barca.

Not many people realise he's keeping a club legend out of a spot (Xavi) and took over from the bloke they were supposed to build the whole next generation around (Fabregas) at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Vidal was so bad, for all his hard work I don't think he completed a single pass and should have been sent off after 25 minutes. And it was clear that Pirlo is way past his best. That save by Buffon from Alves genuinely took my breath away; it's a shame he kinda fluffed the save on the second goal, I thought he should have held that.

I thought it was actually a good final. Juve held on in the first-half but probably should have gone ahead in the second when they were dominating. At the end of the day they just didn't have the quality to match Barca.

Messi wasn't at his best at all but was still influential. Rakitic was immense, as was Alves. Neymar is crazy good but is sadly a prime example of South America's proud tradition of producing first class cheats.

This PSG v Barca tie...wow

I wrote this before the wining goal. That for me is the greatest ECL game since 1999.

Dodgy penalty call for their 5th, but apart from that it was all legit

Good to see a team of plucky little scrapers knock over a side built on money.

I would even say it's probably the greatest game I've ever seen, even surpassing the 1999 final

Just watching the goal highlights doesn't give a sense to the building pressure. Wow...

That free-kick from Neymar. Wow. And the nerve to take the pen.

I think both pens the players were looking for contact. Suarez even more so - waiting for the contat but he's done it all his career with mixed success.

Don't forget Neymar putting the pass in for the winner.

Also:in the 73 games Suarez has scored for Barca, they have won 68 and drawn 5.

That, my friend JP, is a
