Matildas should never have played against the emerging Jets as it appears they have been infected by the Newcastle Jets curse. A lack of respect for a quality team in Canada and an own goal against the Germans meaning the Matildas have another 4 years to wait.
We will know if they have been effected by the Jets curse when they start focusing on how they dominated Germany and yet didn't win while ignoring the fact that the scoreboard is the only stat that counts.

Best 2 third placed teams go through dunster. They're still a chance. Could even come second if canada roll the germans.
Need to do our bit and smash Zimbabwe.

Agree with the Member here - our media does fawn a bit over losers.
I turned on this morning and they had a montage on a walking race, showing the Aussie guy out on his own and giving it the big ones with the commentary wildly ecstatic - I swore he must have won gold and did not realise he finished third until AFTER the montage.
Yesterday within seconds of the women's 10K which of course had a WR smashed they were going on about the national record and PB of the Aussie girl who finished 10th!
You don't "win" silver and bronze - you "lose" gold. Yes I'm harsh.

Legitimately sick to death of the hype on Aussie sportsmen
Most of them fail to deliver when expected.
Then when they do they offer out the excuses and are happy they participated
We are turning into a nation of losers who happily accept second place.
The Olympics is the pinnacle for these athletes. I expect everyone of them to be delivering Personal Best performances.
After all that is what they have devoted the last 4 years to.
The vast majority are not even delivering performances they are capable of.
Then the media and public sit back and congratulate them on being second rate and failing.

quite a revealing interview with them on the telly with a slightly condescending Bronte Campbell sneering at the reporter when they asked if we should be copying the Americans preparation.
she said words to the effect of 'no, its a 4 year cycle and the Aussies peaked last year and the Americans peaked this year'.
so she was in fact blaming the preparation, yet seemed happy to set world records in a dead year then flop when the sport reached its pinnacle.
bit like going undefeated in the pre-season innit?

The team that we have sent to compete are the best at their respective sports in our country.
Not sure if Captain Obvious has mentioned it, but other countries also send their best athletes.
As it stands, we are ranked 9th in the world on Gold Medals. Is this poor?
The 8 nations above us:
USA - 324 Million people
Great Britain - 65 Million people
China - 1.38 Billion people
Russia - 143 Million people
Germany - 80 Million people
France - 66 Million people
Japan - 126 Million people
Italy - 59 Million people
Australia - 24 Million people
Based on our population of people to select our best athletes, I think we are doing reasonably well.
Now, I agree, it is absolutely disappointing and questions have to be asked why our athletes aren't quite performing to their personal best levels. Personal bests should be their target, if that gets them a medal, great! If not, well at least they've given their best.
Some body has to win, somebody has to lose. There is no competition if only the best competes. Why do we even send an Olympic team? Why do Australia even send a team to the world cup? Why do we even play as part of the A- League? After all, we aren't the best at any of these things.
The media has raised the expectations and the Sydney Olympics have somewhat given us false hope. Particularly around our swim team. Sure some of them failed to do their best, yes that is disappointing and questions will be asked. But does that take anything away from them for being the best Australia has, or being in the top 5 in the world for something?
When Messi plays, when he fails to score, does that mean he's not a great player anymore? has he failed? Are people celebrating his failure? He can't even win Copa America.

At the WC the team that finishes third never seems particularly happy, they wanted a shot at the big prize.
At the Olympics the ones that excel themselves and do something remarkable to get a medal deserve plaudits.
The ones that think they will win, are predicted to win, fail and then make excuses and say how happy they are to "win" bronze are the ones that want shooting.

We are so narrow minded in Australia, we never hear about other countries progress. Going into the swimming it was all about how the Campbell sisters would win yet no one mentions the Katie Ledeky or Sarah Sjostroms that were going to shake everything up. These girls aren't unknowns but they were barely known in Australia because we have our head so far up our own arse that going into the games we forget that other countries exist!
Anyway, what are you thoughts on the new Beach Volleyball ball design?

Population means **** all
If it did China and India would be best in the word at football
They are not
Iceland would never beat England in the Euros
They did
This is about our athletes performing at their best and not accepting second place as acceptable
Seems to be the defining characteristic of those born in the mid 80s onwards
It all about participating rather than winning
Too many of them are mentally soft between the ears thanks to the Wankers that surrounds them
Your right this is the best of the best . That means that when you get a government hand out to pursue your dream 24-7 the expectation is there that on your big day your 4 years of training are culminated into a performance that is your best
Not something inferior
Yeah someone has to finish second. Your right.
Any athlete worth their salt doesn't accept that it is them. They make sure it's the other guys
As for the swimming we had 7 individuals go in as favourites on times posted and performance
1 of them delivered a medal
The rest couldn't even be a lucky loser
plague

It's pretty simple.
Ask them all before the Olympics "what's your goal".
The ones that say 'win gold' but don't are considered disappointments.
Everyone who answers something different should be left at home and be given a copy of The Book of Griff in the hope that over the next 4 years they work it out.

The test are absolutely useless - always have been. Even hack bodybuilders can avoid testing positive these days and that lot aren't the brightest nor do they have access to the resources of the higher earning athletes.
In athletics the testing is simple. If you are male and can run 100m under 10.3 seconds - you are probably juiced, and for a Female anything under 11.2 seconds should be ringing alarm bells as well.

Yehhhh, I’m starting to think the same.
All for inclusion of women versions of events Eg canoe slalom, 1500 free etc.
That mixed medley was one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen. It was strangely entertaining, but I have no idea why that’s an event. Where do we stop? 4x 50 mixed, 4x 100 mixed etc.
I feel that way with some sports too.
If it ain’t the pinnacle of your sport, shouldn’t be included.
Eg golf, tennis.
I guess we are trying to make it world inclusive.
Idk, skateboarding, surfing and some other things have been making me think it’s losing its special ness.

yeah it's a bit weird...but i guess they need people to watch.
i'm a bit conflicted - although i've moaned about the swimming joke events not being the pinnacle of the sport - if they're going to be in, it would make more sense for golf and tennis to be match play / teams events. like the ryder cup is US v europe, the presidents cup is US v the world, make the olympics everyone for themselves...
the golf today was great, but it was 100 times better when it went to a play off

Was it the high jump, when two athletes jumped x height with no fails. They then upped it to x + y and both failed 3 times.
The athletes were told there would be a jump off to decide the gold.
Apparently they asked if they can’t both just have gold, and they were like, oh I guess so.

Surely you jest?
It will all end up gender neutral with quotas for team sports...."Mollyroos" anyone?
And this everyone is a winner thing being bred in kids sport will pay-off with gold for everyone who takes part.
Strange times.
