Season kicks off with a family friendly Sunday game and the Jets with their new manager are expecting to kick the barrel boys off the park. Put the 3pts up on the table already.

The big interest will be in who starts in goal and will the 5 star Chinese flag be on the shirt badge. Jets 4-1

Good to have a 5:00pm game on a Sunday. It's just not football unless you have the sun burning through your retinas trying to watch the game. Well done to the FFA for giving the fans what they want once again.

Extraordinary victory, which will top the 2-3 v City at the start of last season. Everyone will think Jones is great, just like they thought Miller was after the Melbourne match.

However, after a few rounds, Jones will stutter, the team will collapse, Jones will eventually be sacked and Our Saviour will be brought in.

TALKING POINTS:

Memorable Match - 11th April 2014

Marked the final match for former captain Michael Bridges. In the 2-0 win, Bridges provided an assist for the 90th minute goal from Adam Taggart. Bridges made 66 appearances in 5 seasons with the club.

General

Newcastle have never defeated Adelaide when they have faced off in Rd 1.
The Jets have won 3, drawn 4 and lost 4 of their first round matches.
There was only 1 goals scored between these teams in the 3 fixtures last year. The goal was scored by Marcello Carrusca.
There have been 6 red cards shown in the last 6 matches at Hunter Stadium.
The Jets have scored 10 goals in the last 6 matches at Hunter Stadium - being held scoreless only once during this time.

Players

Devante Clut, Wayne Brown, Andrew Nabbout, Kristian Brymora, Ivan Vujica and Aleksandr Kokko are in line to make their A-League debut for the club. The next player to appear will be player #139 for the Jets.
Only 6 players have scored on their A-League debut for the Newcastle Jets. Milos Trifunovic and Byun Sung-Hwan are the only two to have scored a debut goal in Round 1.
This will be the first season in the last 4 that Mark Birighitti has not started in Round 1.
Jack Duncan could become just the 8th keeper to start a match for the Jets.
Newcastle have lost only once to Adelaide in the last 5 visits of United to Newcastle.

Newcastle Jets

The Jets haven't scored a first half goal against Adelaide in the last 2 seasons.
The Jets conceded a penalty in their last 3 matches at the end of last season.
The Jets have scored the first goal in 3 of their last 4 A-League matches.
The Jets are 16528 attendees away from having their 1,500,000 person at a Jets match.
Newcastle have never recovered a point when they have gone behind to Adelaide.

Adelaide United

Adelaide have kept Newcastle scoreless for the last 459 minutes of play. The last goal scored by a Jets player against Adelaide was Jeronimo Neumann.
Guillermo Amor is undefeated against the Jets.

Injuries

Newcastle Jets Daniel Alessi - Knee (Season).
Adelaide United

PREDICTION: –
After what seemed like an uncharacteristically stable off season where a gradual build-up in friendly matches and an overseas tour, the Jets again delivered by terminating the contract of Scott Miller. After a 3 week search the Jets appointed former assistant Mark Jones in his first A-League coaching job - the third debut appointment in a row for the club.
Despite losing 3-1 to the Victory on a wild wet and windy night in the FFA Cup, the Jets have had a generaly successful preseason - highlighted by the goalscoring form of Andrew Hoole and Andrew Nabbout. This might come too quick for Mateo Poljak (Hamstring) and Labinot Haliti (Knee) to return from injury.
Reigning champions Adelaide have lost a number of players, primarily in the forward line but have otherwise managed to retain the spine of their title winning team.
The Jets haven't had a great recent record against Adelaide. Will Mark Jones have had enough time to make his influence on the team prior to this match? How will Adelaide's new look forward line gel?
I think the departure of Miller so close to the start of the season will see the Jets struggle as they adapt to his game plan while the champions will have too much class.
LINE UP (Predicted) Duncan, Hoffman, Mullen, Boogaard, Cowburn, Ugarkovic, Brown, Nabbout, Nordstrand, Hoole, Kokko.
Adelaide 1-0

Hello Craig. Please tell Zach:

that the optimal length of a social media video is 30 seconds;
to straighten the picture (of dolls?) on his wall;
to place himself in the centre of the filmed area (he's too low in the screen, and a bit to the right - it's distracting);
that I also find the hula hoop distracting (possibly because it's neon orange);
that I'd like to hear his views on which coach we should have (e.g. Miller? Papas? Gombau? GVE?)
Many thanks.

Jets 1-0. Hoole to continue his scoring run from pre-season.

We had a good record against the champions last year, and we have a decent record against them at home when they've generally always been stronger than us.

Yep, that was it. Our last 6 matches at home against Adelaide have been 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses.

I didn't realise Carrusca was out for a few months in addition to Marrone and Elsley being out. In addition to the departures, Adelaide are looking a bit light on.

Holland will slot in for Mauk. Guardiola is an unknown quantity. Goodwin and Kamau have been replaced with Kitto and Garrucio (I assume) though the latter may be moved back into defence with the injuries.

I could see a bit of an upset on the cards and I'm starting to reconsider my prediction.

I'm starting to think that with Carrusca out, Marrone and Elsey out, limited time for Holland and Guardiola to come in the team, limited depth and quality replacement up front that we might have a chance. More and more I'm thinking we're a chance. We'll be deadset certanties in my mind come Sunday.

I do this every season, even before most matches. Why haven't I learned yet??

Alan Milliner is the referee for the match.

He's officiated 7 Jets A-League matches. We've won 2, drawn 2 and lost 3. We lost the 1 FFA Cup match he refereed

A-League - He's pretty consistent in the distribution of cards to both teams (17 Jets and 14 opposition). Never shown a red for either team and has awarded only one penalty in the 7 matches - to the Brisbane Roar which was saved by Birighitti.

He last refereed us in this season's FFA Cup match against the Melbourne Victory.

Read the article about BK this morning and there is this line:

Jones warned that Adelaide’s starting XI on Sunday would be close to the line-up who won last season’s grand final.

Either Jones is fxxxing clueless or that is terrible reporting. By my count there are only 5 out of the 11 players who started the grand final last year who are either still with Adelaide or are available to play.

So, of the 16 man match day squad... HALF aren't available. And that's assuming LaRocca actually plays given that he's still recovering from a fractured cheekbone.

When is Covic signing?

Definitely. Player for player we have improved in every spot bar the keeper. Willing to give Duncan time considering birraz had a less than glorious start to his jets career.. But, if covic does sign we start to look like a good unit. Oh and kanta, he was not with it today..

We were solid, on the balance of the game a draw isn't a terrible result. We had clearer chances.

Hoole - owned by Tarek today, never seen him head a ball and doubt I ever will. Plain to see why Arnie dumped him. The one on one was just too slow as he waited to get it on his right foot
UGg - quiet but more effective than Kanta
Nabbout - tried hard and was more effective in the second half
Kokko - showed some glimpses but clearly not 100% .Keen to see hime work with Noddy
Brown - our best today

Clut - busy, showed promise
Jackson - no better or worse than Mullen
Vujica - not on long enough

We were pedestrian in the main. Little or no effective press on their back 4. Got no joy on Tareks side and were slow on transition once we won the ball back.

The less said about their goal and Hoole's effort the better.

We need Noddy. Kanta needs a new challenge elsewhereaway from Newy. I have little faith in either keeper. Hoole has left his (apparent) pre season form in the shed.

Jones in a suit looked like he was off to court. He is the east coast Kenny Lowe in the looks department and should not wear a suit. Can't polish a turd.

And Kanta was no better.....
Goal we conceded is very disappointing, Duncan looked nervous at times, should have made it his ball.....

I more so think that Mullen should have dealt with the ball. Duncan didn't look like he wanted to come and Mullen wanted him to so Duncan came out half hearted and with absolutely no plan on what he was going to do. Mullen panicked last minute and tried to deal with it but Duncan had already committed to his slide.

Absolute horrendous communication. As a defender myself, I tend to feel that if the goalkeeper isn't coming out straight away or is hesitating, you don't wait for the goalkeeper, you deal with it.

Unless you hear a loud call from the keeper you should hoof it.

As a first run and considering the injuries cruelled any tactical subs the performance was satisfactory. Attacking wise we look much better - it's at the back we need more work. Preseason results show that we can score but concede as well.

For all the talk about how poor we were at the back etc etc let's not forget the fact we conceded one goal to last years champion's and it was a goalkeeper error. If we go the year averaging one goal per game we will be close to the top.

(Which is unlikely to happen)

yep that's the way I saw it too (I actually think Mullen called him onto the ball), horrendous communication. both to blame.

while we're throwing around the blame, let's not forget the player that lost the ball around the halfway that led to the through ball. can't remember who that was, but don't recall it being under much pressure.

My thoughts on the game:
Even though Adelaide seemed to dominate possession I believe we had the better chances and seemed to create quite a few shots and chances which is pretty rare for the jets.
I'm both happy and disappointed in a draw. Happy that we didn't lose our opening game against the premiers (even though they aren't the same team), but I believe we deserved more and conceeding a goal like that is a killer!!

Kanta was rubbish, Duncan was shaky (but did produce a great free-kick save) and there was no communication between the keeper and defence.

Very true..
Poor old Duncs, some of those high balls coming in, with the swirling wind.. I didn't envy him having to deal with them..

It was a bitter sweet draw.. If you had told me before the game that we would draw, I would have taken it immediately.. But after the amount of chances we created, came away from the game feeling we deserved more..

Pretty much sums up my opinion too.

Once Kokko was substituted, it's no surprise to me that Brown became a little less effective as we essentially played without a front man. Also reflected on the match fitness of Labi that he wasn't brought on as a he wasn't brought on as a straight swap for Kokko.

Any sort of influence we could have on the game through our bench was completely wiped because of the 3 injuries, so to have achieved a point was good.

Adelaide managed to get in behind us a few times yesterday but I thought overall we defended pretty well. Good teams are always going to create chances and we limited them to 4 shots on target.

Duncan will have learned a lot from this match but it disappoints me there seemed to be so much confusion between the back 3 (GK & 2x CB). Mullen looked like he was a second behind the play regardless and was jittery even before the goal. In saying that, he's going to be a massive loss.

Our depth is getting tested really early - much like last season. The muscle injuries we've got - Nordstrand, Poljak, Kennedy, Hoffman, Kokko - how does this reflect on our pre-season? Have we gone too hard and we're now starting to see injuries? Just a thought I've had.

We looked at times like a team who are tweaking their manner of play under a new manager.

Our attack yesterday was some of the best we've had for a few years. The pace of Nabbout and Hoole, presure of Brown was great to watch. Look back this time last year and we had tired legs of Alivodic, Carney and Leonardo and there is a stark difference there.

can't agree with either comment, Mullen positions himself as well as any of our defenders and doesn't go missing like Jackson, Jackson too often last season got caught out and created headaches for our defence

Bit harsh as he was playing out of his natural position at LB in most of his games for us last season.

Given Labi and Nobby still to come back the Jets look like they might have the combination of speed, ability, and experience in the final third that's been missing for a long time.

Still think it's going to be tough for them but the new signings definitely gave supporters a a good showing.

That's a good point Jeterpool regarding the "tired legs" where we had players who were clearly running out of steam by the 70th minute mark last season.
This year we seem to have our most mobile front 3rd for quite a few seasons. A good case in point was Nabbout giving away a stray pass well into the 2nd half of the match just inside Adelaide's half. A swift counter ensued but Nabbout gave chase and ran down the Adelaide player well in our half and dispossessed him for a throw-in. it's these little things which add up over the course of a game that can make the difference between getting 0, 1 or 3 points.

Kanta is still frustrating to watch, had a good 1st half but gave away too many stray passes at critical times in the 2nd which luckily went unpunished. I don't know if this has been said before but he just doesn't seem to be up to speed with the game at times. It's like he is already committed to a pass and he tries to make it without checking that it may get intercepted by the opposition. Bottom line is....why make a risky pass, be more aware of where your team-mates are and the opposition and go for the safer option if in doubt. I'm not on his case or anything just saying it how I see it as he has now played over 120 games at this level and been around for years...I'm just expecting better from him.

Mullen is rubbish has been all last season as well. Had a good 5 seconds to clear the ball b4 it gets to Duncan and b4 henerique gets close but does nothing which forces duncan to go for it. He needs to get out of the starting 11 as well as kanta. Jackson and maybe cowburn can play CB

Please. Waited for as long as he could whilst Duncan pussy footed around to come for a ball he was never going to get. He made the decision to come but once realised he couldn't get there didn't communicate to Mullen to clear. Mullen takes it upon himself to clear and fluffs it. Rest is history.

It was barely in the box with Henrique breathing down his throat. Waiting for the keeper to come out there in that situation is farcical. No doubt Duncan is also to blame but if Mullen just cleared it out, there'd be no drama at all.

Which shows even further that Duncan should never have come off his line. In that situation you trust your keeper's judgement. The only reason he fluffs the clearance is due to Duncan's mistake.

So... you are saying Mullen's mistake in not clearing the thing in the 15 minutes he had to wait for Duncan is entirely Duncan's fault and that the blame is entirely on Duncan? I could be wrong on how long he had to wave his arms about, might have been closer to 20 minutes.

Pretty much. Communication is entirely Duncan's responsibility here as he has clear sight. Much like telling a teammate if he has time or man on. His indecisiveness and lack of judgment causes the entire situation. On the flip side if Duncan doesn't come and Mullen fails to clear then the blame is on Mullen. Then again Duncan is probably there to make an easy save not stuck out in the middle of nowhere looking like a pork chop.

But we aren't talking about a ball coming deep into the box at speed, we are talking about a fairly slow moving ball that was always going to be a close thing... we wouldn't even be having this discussion of who is to blame if Mullen had just kicked it out for a throw in about 5s earlier.

Then again, we wouldn't be having this discussion if Hoole had missed Galekovic, hadn't frozen when he beat Galekovic and was in behind or if he hadn't given up the ball that lead to the Mullen/Duncan shambles goal.

Let's just blame Hoole.
