TALKING POINTS:
Memorable Match - 17th November 2013
The first match where the Jets came from behind at half time to win. Brisbane took the lead through a Luke Bratten goal on a soggy afternoon in Newcastle. The second half saw the Jets score two goals through Adam Taggart, with a little help from a large puddle of water, to run out 2-1 winners.
General
There has only been one scoreless match between these two teams in the history of the A-League.
The Jets last beat Brisbane in February 2014.
The Jets are 7383 attendees from having 1.5 million people attend an A-League game at the stadium.
Mark Jones and Nick Nick Theodorakopoulos are the only managers in Jets history to draw their opening match.
Gary Van Egmond is the only manager to have won his first match against the Roar.
Players
Wayne Brown is the 7th Jets player to score on his A-League debut.
The last substitute to score for the Jets, Radavan Pavicevic, scored his goal against the Roar.
5 players made their debut for the club last week, the same number as Round 1 in the previous two seasons.
Wayne Brown is the 66th player to score for the Jets.
Newcastle Jets
The Jets have scored the first goal in their last 3 fixtures.
The Jets have won 5 of the 10 fixtures held on a Sunday between these 2 clubs, while 2 of the 3 wins in Newcastle have come on a Sunday.
Newcastle have scored a goal in their last 5 games - the longest streak in 2.5 years.
Brisbane Roar
Brisbane have scored the first goal in this fixture on 5 of the last 6 occasions.
Brisbane have managed to claim 20 points from a losing position against the Jets over the course of the A-League's history - the most of any team against Newcastle.
Injuries
Newcastle Jets Daniel Alessi - Knee (Season), Mateo Poljak - Calf (possible), Morten Nordstrand - Knee (possible), Daniel Mullen - Knee (12 weeks), Ben Kennedy - Achilles (Season), Jason Hoffman - Calf (Unknown)
Brisbane Roar
PREDICTION: –
After one round, the Jets are already facing a test of their squad depth with Mullen sustaining a serious knee injury while Hoffman and Kokko are also in doubt. The return of Poljak and Nordstrand should help to aleviate the loss.
Jacob Pepper will likely deputise for the suspended Matt McKay in midfield. The socceroos midfielder's presence will be missed but Pepper will bring energy for the Roar in the middle of the park.
The Jets will look to build upon a solid first performance against Adelaide, but to do so they will need to defy a trend of poor restuls againts the Roar in Newcastle.
With the 1.5 millionth fan at the stadium likely to be in attendance on Sunday, I think the Jets will have enough to get over the line.
Jets 2-1

Jets will be too good for Brisbane. 2-0. I don't think Brisbane will enjoy the extra pace the Jets have in attack this season.
Brisbane are still looking for someone to provide them the options in attack that Broich could a few years back.

Im not getting my hopes up tbh until I see it for myself. Gees I hope noddy is back though.
As proved last week brisbane didnt give up and scoring right at the final siren shows they have a team that works well under pressure.
Im predicting another 1-1 draw. I hope Im wrong and we win but the roar have a fairly decent record here in newcastle which concerns me.

I don't want to get my hopes up but one of the problems I saw last weekend was we were fairly one dimensional. Cowburn on the left wasn't getting forward much and when he did, he wasn't crossing with his left being a right footer. If (when) Vujica starts and we have natural left and right footers on their preferred sides at fullback, we might have useful width on both sides. That will mean Hoole has someone running outside of him when he cuts in giving us more options (that we will butcher).
Vujica worried me a little, looked energetic but plenty of diving into tackles and looks like he'll be ripe for a few cards this year

Hopefully that was some nervous energy that will disappear as he features more often. I thought he looked good otherwise.

Definitely gave us a different option and looks like he could be good going forward. Hopefully you're right, good to see players going in strong to tackles but too many games last year we finished with 10 men

I've driven back after winning twice: 3-5 & 0-5, two years in a row.
But that was an aeon ago.
I'm hedging a bet it was V3 when we beat the Tards four zip at home since we won by 4.
Also (seeing it's in vogue right now) is the Omelette doin' his thang with replays this season?
Had to do with Aaron and Phil today. The big + was that when there was something goal worthy,
I could see it on a stream delayed by about 90 seconds :)
Edit:-
Oh yes, Also: these stats were at the end of TWG story pre game of Alo-misi stating

* The Jets have failed to keep a clean sheet in 16 of their last 17 games <- Busted
* Jamie Maclaren scored in two of his three appearances against Newcastle last season <- Busted

Boogz was amazing, judged everything perfectly.
Brown looks an amazing signing, rarely do the import players in the top 3rd work so bloody hard.
Clut was great when on, he looks tidy.
Poljak worked hard when came on.
Kanta went well and when he f*ucked up, he made up for it.
Hoole good but can be better I think.
Ugar though, wow what a player. He is up their with the smartest footballer this club has ever signed.
Biggest thing for me is our fitness. We were still running them into the ground at 4-0 up in 87th minute. Miller deserves the credit for that!

Great win but....
Brisbane were awful. Around the 30 minute mark we dropped off and let them have the ball for a significant period. Other teams will punish us if we do that. We still lack communication at the back.
It was great that we took our chances yesterday and long may it continue. Even Hoole headed a ball!!!
Great to celebrate but not getting carried away. Huge test next weekend

We pressed for the first 30 mins and it looked part of the plan to then "rest" to finish the half with a lead and clean sheet. Phil Dando said on the radio it was likely Nobby would come off at half time as he was looking tired from all the pressing and running, though he hadn't had much of the ball.

Other bonus was the crowd found their voice. There is potential there and it was good to see both stands engaged with the squadron. Finally got the club to agree to have you in the right location, combined with enjoyable football and the atmosphere at the ground shows signs of life!
A good result against WSW will see 12,000 against shitney at the next home game.

We don't currently have the sort of team that will ever play another team off the park a la Melb City. So we have to play to our strengths, and then ease off where we can, and soak up some pressure before going again. The match yesterday seemed to ebb and flow in that manner. At times we were content to let them have the ball, and when they got within 25m, we blunted their attack. I doubt we'll see a Jets game this season where the opposition don't have a decent number of chances to score. But that's football. As a club, and us fans included, we have to get out of that mindset that when we win it's only because the opposition sucked.

You can only beat the opposition you face on the day. Team did that by 4 goals and deservedly so. Jets have a very good midfield with a lot of pace up front and the Roar failed to meet the challenge. Unlike previous years the Jets actually look like a threat and that means teams need to be a little more defensive against them and that takes away their ability to dominate going forward.
Wanderers will be tough because Poppa will have them kicking the shit out of Nabbout and others as they won't have an answer for the new found pace the Jets now have. If the ref does their job I think Wanderers will struggle.
What was the official crowd figure for yesterday?

This.

I know my membership card didn't scan, and there was at a rough guess about a dozen people whose at-the-gate-purchased-ticket didn't scan either. They ended up just letting us all in.
So I'd say they definitely missed a lot of us in that figure, for I don't know what reason.

Leicester won the EPL doing that last year. They very rarely had dominant spells of possession in any match but utilized great ball winning in midfield (Kante) and Pace up front with Vardy and Mahrez and were lethal on fast breaks. The jets have the components to get some results playing that way as with the pace of the guys we currently have out wide and with Steve Ug in the middle. We just need to ensure we take our chances against the better teams

:rof: I was going to use Leicester as an example but felt like it's become a cliché real quick. Totally agree though.

I think the score was a little flattering to us, I missed the first 15 minutes but of the first half I saw we looked under the pump and pretty underwhelming. A few breaks where we came close or could have - but Brisbane could have had a couple also, a great save onto the crossbar from Oar and I remember one of them sending an uncontested volley wide from about 10 metres.
Second half completely different story and awesome to watch. I wouldn't say it was one way traffic but we were pretty well on top and took some chances well. And it was a great feeling walking away after a 4-0 win and hearing everyone so upbeat and positive after a game as opposed to the last couple of seasons.
I don't think its unrealistic for us to be looking at finals this year. We certainly aren't the finished product yet but a few improvements from a squad that hasn't played together all that long will see us very competitive. As others have said our attacking half and midfield is the best its looked in years - good mix of energy, speed and technique along with desire. As difficult as it is I'm starting to feel pretty optimistic for the season ahead. Hopefully that isn't violently debunked over the next fortnight.

Jets won by four and the Coast lost by 4. So that's Jets 8 - Football Gods 0. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Why you wanna mess with a winning combo.
Nobby fufilling his promise of becoming the next Alidovic, the other bloke is dead set not interested in playing this season.

Yes, will be a nice headache for Jones.
If the others are performing and we are getting the results, they shouldn't be just given a starting XI spot either....they should have to fight for their positions.
Which is a good position to be in, one which we haven't been in for a number of years i might add.
