Ladies, gentleman, plague,

Welcome to the pinnacle of punting, the NF.net King of the Hill, the winner of which to will be determined at the end of the Sydney Autumn Carnival I guess, then we can go into a second phase, which will finish with the end of the G1s at Ascot next year.

As discussed in the other thread, you have 100 units to stake over the 5 races selected for the weekend - which are on the PDF below to get them all in the one place. Check the TAB before you punt for odds, final fields etc.

Single win or place bets only, with the only proviso being that you have to stake on every race.

If there your horse is scratched between the time you enter your bets and the jump, the favourite in that race will be subbed in for you.

Final prices are determined on the paying NSW TAB tote dividend

Other than that it's a blood bath so far - My horses are being slaughtered. Nothing has looked like getting a place let alone a win.

Sure enough in R7 Doomben Most Important who can't go beyond 1200m has decided today to run out a solid 1350m for the first time in its career.

Good news is it can't get any worse next week.

Cheers boys for the first week, hope you had a laugh doing it and for those newcomers, you can see that horse racing is a fantastic way to lose all your money very quickly.

Clubhouse leader is the Wolfman, who sighted the import Sarrasin at very juicy place odds, black book that one! Only other scorer was goaliepersempre who picked up Too Good to Refuse for the P at the truly massive 1.4 :rof:

on the technical side of things, i might get you to put the horses's number as well as the name into the cut and paste jobby next week as it means i can just do it all by formula and speed things up a bit. anyway, cheers for following the rules!

ok punters - how does this look for Saturday's card...some nice group & listed fields on display into the magic millions.

i'm going add one more race in, and to step it up to 120 units for this week and put R8 Eagle Farm in as it's a very interesting field, for mine

thought it would be best to throw it to the people before i do the pdf - you all cool? everyone gets the same so i think it's all good

if there's great dismay i'll can it but i think i'll run with it, not like it's real bucks anyway :rof:

results for last week

can ya check to see if i've made any mistakes? was a shit ton of scratchings but i think only gps and myself copped the sub at caulfield (which worked out to be plein ciel yew), and PC14 got old mate King Darci in the last at WF which paid 4.10

with the sub rule - i have just kept it to be your original stake, for the win on the favourite if there's a scratching, does anyone have a problem with that?

With respect to scratchings I think both the type of bet [win/place] and the stake should remain the same. If the scratched horse was backed for the place then the favourite replacing it should also be backed for the place and so on.

Q-man now 2nd richest man in the world behind Hawk.

Killing myself for changing my mind on King Darci though due to lack of form on heavy tracks - I could have put myself into the black.

You are doing a great job as well Q - it's good fun.

Comin' Through killed me, I put 50 on the win and it ran exactly like a horse I bet on!

I watching it run Derby Day last year and it was super impressive, haven't seen much since!

I've seen too many odds on pops go under at 1.5 to even entertain the thought of loading into them unless they are very special.

Winx yes, BHB possibly, but Bart was very, very close to going under to Tosen Stardom (he didn't, but it was squeaky bum time for a few of you on him i'm sure)

These affairs where Winx is trouncing the field don't come around very often - and make for very interesting betting angles around her, for mine. If you've done your homework (track/distance/conditions) there is money to be made. For the most part though, I agree with you.

For me - the exacta isn't a bad angle to play if you've marked up someone who's clearly on top and you don't want to make a huge investment into it. Dixie Blossoms case in point on the weekend. small field, wet track and you can knock out half of them as not good enough to win it in the conditions.

stood out DB into zanbagh/flippant/danish twist for $20 investment - nets $130.

of course it doesn't always work like that but i enjoy my arvos on the punt a bit more when they last for longer, rather than watching every short price fav i've loaded into end up in the sea

We had the two surest things in racing on the weekend: Winx and Blackheart Bart at Caulfield. The payouts were not great - but still paying massive overs.
Place betting is a quick way to lose money. You have a third the chance but the average payout is a quarter or worse.
If you think a horse is a certainty to run a place you really mean it has a chance of winning - You should back it to win.

Quite literally, the difference between my total last week and yours was my decision to take the $3.70 about Whoshot Thebarman for a place, rather than the almost even money Winx to win as we knew she would.

Where there's value in place betting, I'll always take it

It was a risky bet though - given that if Hartnell didn't get on the piss the night before you would have run fourth.

In the long run betting on the win will make you more money.

The bookies love place and each way bets.

ok lads. i'm still doubtful sydney will run - so i'll split it into 2 separate meetings of 5 races (i.e. all of outside sydney), then sydney only as well because it is a great day of racing. if it gets canned then you can have a crack again for the monday fields, if it runs we have 10 races on the card for the week. same rules apply - 100 units for each racelist.

so fill out both - and if randwick gets shuffled to monday you can edit your choices

no worries - i noticed an error with one of the formulas on the sheet in your bit last night, i think i fixed it in one spot but forgot to carry it over to the points

on that note - if we're going to move ahead with another KOTH (which i'm keen for) i was thinking of setting up a punters club on SB if people were interested. i.e. one person each week for $5 or whatever, rotates through the comp and we can have some frothies at the end of it if we win anything. (by the way some of us are going we'll be lucky to get anything hahaha). let me know your thoughts

I'd be interested in how everyone makes their selections. I developed an algorithm for my KOTH selections each week and stick by it regardless of what my own intuition tells me.
When I used to punt for a crust I let other people read the form guide for me and simply eliminated any horse listed at 10/1 or greater the day before the race. I then Looked at the money going onto those 10/1 and under horses in the last 5 mins of betting and selected the best backed horse for a win - which was not always the favourite.
I rarely got anything up over $2.25 [50c units back then] but you can definetly make money because you are following the informed money rather than the mugs. You just don't bet on Melb Cups and other shit like that - otherwise you lose $5k on a piece of shit called Natski like I did in 1988.

KOTH is a bit different for me - as i don't like backing things particularly early in the market unless i know the value is there from past runs. plus i'm behind - so i'm chasing, which as we all know is always a disaster.

real money punting wise, i subscribe to a ratings service who provide their best for the day on weekends, which i will then frame into my own market if sydney or melbourne, or trust their judgement in other cities. has played decently so far. i watch a fair whack of replays and do speedmap work from 2 sources, which to be honest, i've found only really pays off if you do it religiously, i.e. you can't just lob in on a friday night after a few cans and expect to know everything! my best runs have come when i put in upwards of 5-6 hours a week doing proper form work.

KOTH has been a very good experience actually, as it's great to see the way other people play things over the period and the returns on sticking solid. might go crunch some of the data out of it at the end and put it up. i.e. SPs, returns and profiles

for the most part since last spring carnival, i make my punting bank through the week betting on exactas and duets at Happy Valley, which i then donate back to the good people at the TAB on Saturday, then make it back on Sunday at Sha Tin, then give it to my wife

To be honest I spend about 5 minutes max on form guide for KOTH, I'm not a big punter or an often punter I just love watching the horses going around.

I am a big fan of the saying paralysis by over analysis saying, a lot of the time the best horses and best suited do the best which is kind of how I bet in real life usually the roughies are roughies for a good reason unless the market has missed something.

Generally I only bet on 3-5 races a week if that, and mainly in Sydney as there is just too many horses and formlines to follow throughout Australia unless you are getting serious, I watch the racing rant boys on Fridays and the review show on Mondays, get speedmaps in Sydney and thats about it.
