http://www.a-league.com.au/article/western-sydney-wanderers-sign-marquee-alvaro-cejudo/1pnntgkkgzxak1tpex897lb1tc
Wanderers have a second marquee, Alvaro Cejudo
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%81lvaro_Cejudo
It makes a mockery of the "marquee" concept as it was originally slated. The star attraction has dropped from being a name that a reasonable follower of football knew - Dwight Yorke, Mario Jardel, Craig Moore, Juninho, Robbie Fowler, Del Piero, Heskey, Ono to a guy like this!? Even those who have come here and developed into a marquee player - Berisha and Broich for example.
He's not a marquee. He's a bloke who has an allocated spot as a salary cap excemption - that's all it is.
I think the term needs to change because it isn't a marquee, per se, anymore. The league has moved on.
I think the term needs to change because it isn't a marquee, per se, anymore. The league has moved on.
The term HAS changed. To Designated Player.
http://www.a-league.com.au/about
Designated Players – A Club can spend an unlimited amount on two Players (Foreign or Australian) it nominates as Designated Players;
You are right - all it is, is an allocated spot as a salary cap exemption.

Hopefully its all just bitterness from Ljubo and none of this is true/ effects the Jets this year.
He needs to button it, be a man and move on. There is no doubt he clashed with Ernie (and Muscat who is probably the number one he refers). Shit happens.
But back then he was making all sorts of wild allegations, none really proven, and at the end of it all said "I'm not bitter".
He says Ernie avoids him but he initially asked for his Victory release when Ernie was out of the country.

Fwiw I don't think the yelling and screaming approach to coaching is where it's at these days but Merrick hasn't really ever been accused of it prior no?
Which means either maybe Ljubo just has problems with the yelly screamy authoritarian figures (not an uncommon occurrence) or Merrick can at lest keep it behind closed doors.
It's also not a bad thing for coaches to evolve over time as well. Hopefully there's a bit of that there.
Ljubos comments are pretty funny based on recent comments by Merrick that there's too many younguns in the squad.
GET THEM TEENAGERS OFF YOUR LAWN ERNIE!!!!!!!!

has Ljubo *ever* said anything nice about a coach though?? ;)
Ljubo and Mark Jones used to work with the less experienced players in the Jets squad because Branko simply could not be bothered hanging around a second longer than he needed to draw his salary.
From what I've been told by a parent of a former jets player Ljubo and Jones would stay back to help any of the players that needed to work on areas of their game.
So I would say Yes to your question. Ljubo would speak highly of Mark Jones.
Ask yourself this - has Ljubo actually had a crack at anyone that wasn't a dickhead ? Probably not.

Just an observation from watching Jets training since Bernie took over I haven't seen him raise his voice in anger or frustration. Will be interesting to see how this goes as the pressure of the season builds.
In fact he's opposite to what I imagined. He's quite funny and quite regularly stops and has a chat with anyone who's still hanging around after training.

How does money talk??
If JVS was under contract then it the Gypo who has sanctioned his release
Considering the bloke was doing a pretty fine job with his keepers then it makes no sense to get rid of him
When you compare the job JVS had done compared to the blokes before him it insane to release him
Plus it ain't like our owner needs the ****ing cash either

The club must have changed their policy about signing blokes that could actually cross a ball into the box.
In saying that I think he plays more as a CM than a winger these days.
Injury wise he's very sound and apart from a tibia fracture a few years ago [ missed six games] he's pretty much always on the park.

So, will the 30 days expire before the game? I've recorded we announced Dimi and NTS on June 6th and 14th respectively - but perhaps their official date is aligned to a transfer window opening?
Either way, it's something the club can hopefully resolve before the game. To be hindered by influences outside our control would be disasppointing. Where are the FFA on this?

I can't believe he hasn't been signed by anyone! I'd take him in a heartbeat if we had one extra spot available but since we want a "marquee" player and we have to have the Chinese player. I'd be slightly disappointed if we got him now in that marquee spot.

but of course no Lawrie wouldnt even know who he is we will just stick to the You Tube videos from South America. even Larie's words in he herald didnt give much confidence with we believer he had the qualities so in other words we dont know him never seen him play but our super agent told us he was good and the 5 minute video snippet was impressive

Milligan if he had of came here instead of Victree would dominate in this side
It got nothing to do with whom is around him
He would still be a dominant player amongst the shite around him
The only thing stopping Stevie U from stepping it up to be a dominant player is ability and performance
The bloke needs to work on his positional play something shocking and protect his back four better, pick up a lot more free ball and put some sting into his tackling
Then let's not even start about his efforts in attack

That was 10 year ago
Milligan is a much more complete player these days than he was at 21 or whatever he was when he came here for 10 games
That a successful club like Victree head hunted him as the key signing to lead them to success says plenty

Hi all, I realise this is probably not the right thread but there you go. Match report jets v mid north coast football teams.
There were two sides from mncf and the northern side, made up of Kempsey and port players were shocking. Clut put the jets ahead after just 45 seconds. His second not long after. Vijuca enjoyed his goal the third with a fine celebration and then they just played all over them. A totally dominant half of football by the jets and so it should have been as they were playing some fairly average footballers. The jets played a 3-5-2 and cut the opposition to shreds with what you would all describe as a b string side. Boogs, clut, Jackson, vijuca and cowburn the regulars from last year. Kosta replaced around 15 in. Not bad and pretty tight to lead 5 zip at the half.
Second half started with the same side except boogs off for Hoffman and brown off for Uga. A 442. The mncf south side ,Camden haven,Taree, foster boys, played much more intelligently and compressed the mids to win more ball even getting a few poor chances that they couldn't convert. It took 30 minutes for the jets to score again and that mainly due to the introduction of the A team players. Nts, kanta, dimi, odonovan , georgevski et al. They began to dominate again only to have the mncf keeper deny them with 3 or 4 great saves and a dominant control of his area. They finally succumbed to sustained pressure and when I left with 5 to go the jets were up 7 nil.
Good crowd of 4100 attended within a friendly atmosphere. I did comment just before the changes occurred that I'd be worried if I was Ernie as it took a long time to score in the second half. $5 entry with 3.50 beers. Aahh, l do like living here.

That's Themba Muata-Marlow, Alessi and now Adelson who were young defenders and sustained varying knee injuries in pre-season. Wonder if it's all the focus on turning and running back we do as a defensive drill?

Since when is it a crime to speak the truth??
Ok onto the Jackson thing.
That's now multiple coaches at multiple levels who continually praise the bloke and marvel at his potential.
Yet he has never 'seemed' to be anything special atthe Jets.
Is it because:
His defensive partners at the Jets don't allow him any chance to play his natural game?
Do the Jets coach(es) stifle whatever good points he has in his game in order to fit a 'system' ala Josh Brillante?
Jets fans are just assholes and hate everyone?
Discuss.
Potential really means **** all
He has speed
He has size
But he is clumsy as all **** with the ball
Now we have Topor back he has a good role model to
work with
Problem is potential means **** all
We could potentially make the semis if we win enough games this season
Reality says we will crash and burn at some stage

Is the lack of rumours around the finalisation of the squad concerning anyone other than me? We signed Moss and NTS without any rumours that I saw or heard - surely we can't be getting good at keeping negotiations behind closed doors?
Ever since the Brazilian 10 fell through, we've not heard anything about 2nd, 3rd or 4th options.
My bet - we start the season still need to complete the squad.

To me it's a complete waste.
- Won't help our preparations, 16-0 playing with 10 men.....may as well play Zone League teams.
- Won't bring in new members and put bums on seats.
My optimism for the season is flying out the window and these games do nothing to help us identify and resolve issues.
How negative.....it wasn't meant to be just about the games.
It's about engagement and 4100 in Port indicates people want to see them. People have often complained we don't engage NNSW enough.
And don't forget the coaching and autograph sessions.

We were lucky enough to have the Jets tour in Muswellbrook last year, and I can guarantee that 600+ kids from this region had a blast at a coaching clinic held with players they only get to see on TV.
It's about fan engagement and sponsor responsibilities. Without those things, there is no HAL let alone club.

Not only that, it's about the team-building/bonding going on the trip as well.
Fvck we are a miserable bunch of cunce..
If we beat them 1-0, people would be complaining about how sh!t we are..
We beat them 16-0 and people are complaining about how sh!t we are for not finding decent competition..
Love being a Jets fan..
If it gets families, kids, people from regional centres out to support and watch our team, to meet players, etc then it can only be a good thing for the game..
As for the finalisation of the squad.. I keep seeing other teams signing foreign players (Nix with Serbian, Adelaide with Algerian, Sydney with Polish, etc).
While they are yet to be proven in the A-league, it still gets me wondering what on earth we are doing with our recruitment..
Not only that, it's about the team-building/bonding going on the trip as well.

100% agree with this.
Some of you seriously need to think about how lucky you are that you get to go to a game roughly every 2nd weekend - even when we are winning spoons. It may be tough supporting the jets at times, but I would give anything to be able to get to games but cant because of travel distance and other commitments.
The jets are meant to represent Northern NSW not just Newcastle so while the scoreline isnt great (but everyone has been hammering them for not thrashing NPL teams, so they have done exactly what people wanted them to do) the 4100 fans that turned up in port and whatever the number that turned up in Tamworth may have gone to the only game they will get a chance to see all year because they dont have the opportunity to get to Newcastle to see a regular season game. Not to mention that a whole heap of kids are now going to mum and dad can we go watch the jets again this year?
Lets not forget the season doesn't start till October, does it really matter that we are doing these types of camps now? If we were doing it the week before the season I might worry, but we now have 3 confirmed and 1 possible game against a-league opponents in the next month (not sure how accurate the reports I read about these were so could be wrong) so it seems as though they are doing the right thing by the football community and club and by all reports posted have done a great job of it. So well done to the jets management and players.

As a test of quality, yes. I think there reaches a point where it surpasses being a challenge and becomes little more than a training run. The tests are going to come in the next few weeks when we play Sydney FC, Wellington and (possibly) Melbourne City. It can't hurt the strikers finding the back of the net, however, and some time spent building front 3 combinations. I'd also suggest the likes of Vujica, Champness, Cowburn and Clut getting on the score sheet will give Merrick something to consider for teh coming weeks.
As others have pointed out, there's more of the "Jets message" they deliver on tours like this, which I'm sure you're more than aware of.

No you are wrong
It is the NEWCASTLE Jets
It ain't the NNSW Jets
The club represents Newy and some Chinese Lightsalesmans empire
Branching out to spread the club's reach into NNSW is fine but don't try drawing it out that the Jets represent Coffs Harbour Or Tamworth or Port Macquarie or anyone else north of Newy
These camps are not the issue
It that the club is playing trials against massive inferior opponents

Let's just conceed and have all the kids in the region running around in Gypo yellow, pretending to be Josh Bingham knocking in goals, dreaming they're playing at Gosford Stadium and have their parents spending their hard earned on buying them Mariners replica kits and making the once or twice a year pilgramige down to the Central Coast.

As for quality it doesn't become a training run when the challenge aspect is removed
It becomes more or less pointless
Doing the business against quality opponents breeds confidence
Smashing goals past weak opposition does very little

About Us
Brief History
On November 1 2004, Football Federation Australia (FFA) – the governing body for football in Australia – announced that the Newcastle United Jets (Newcastle Jets) was one of eight franchises to have successfully bid for a place in the freshly founded Hyundai A-League – the new top, fully professional division of football in Australia. Alongside foundation clubs from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Gosford, Brisbane, and Auckland (New Zealand), Newcastle’s bid had been given the privileged opportunity to represent the Northern New South Wales region – an area steeped in football history and tradition – in what would ultimately become one of the most exciting, engaging and rapidly growing sporting competitions in Asia.

More to your point, why even play backyard cricket with your 7 year old nephew? You're gonna beat him. You're not challenging yourself. FFS, MFKS you should be playing backyard cricket against South Africa instead of wasting your time with your nephew.

I think the Jets should move to Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, or Port Macquarie on a permanent basis. I wouldn't shed a tear if they left Newcastle that's for sure. Let someone else deal with the clubs empty promises and false hope.
On a side note: Has the club offered the Keeper that let in the 16 goals a five year contract yet ? He certainly ticks all the boxes.

That just some self promotion dribble on the club's website
FFS Northern don't even represent NNSW properly yet they do a much better job of it than the Jets do
Anything the Jets have done fir NNSW has been tokenistic and self serving rather than a dedicated commitment to the community

No I would rather we actually put decent pre season preparation together for a change
Not play a pile of NNSW NPL team taking it with no intensity a couple of combined hogge podge squads and a shirts and skins game v the Gypos at Tuggerah isn't adequate to me

So... They haven't had a go in the past at properly doing anything for the NNSW community.
They go and play some games in front of regional communities involving the community and some local footballers who get a chance to play against some national league players.
But you are against it? Which one do you want, make up your mind.

The PR trip for the Jets is little more than a smokescreen to hide the fact they are struggling to sign quality players, and that they are destined to come last again in the 2017/18 A-league season.
If they can sign some quality soon I'll retract my statement - but until that happens the club is taking the piss once again from anyone crazy enough to buy tickets.

Why are you attacking MFKS ? He's not responsible for failing to sign a high quality foreign player. He's not the one that has failed to make the finals and finished in last place.
We should all be critical of the club because nothing seems to be changing and once again the result will be the same unacceptable shit.
Melbourne City have a great team and finished in the Top 4 - they can afford to have a less intensive pre season because they are still involved in the FFA Cup. - unlike the Jets.
The Jets are not up to standard and if they keep playing weak opposition they will not improve.

When the season rolls around our key players will be our DM GK and Back 4 as they the blokes who going to be busy every match
Having a turkey shoot for the strikers is achieving little because it ain't replicating much of what going to happen in season
They may as well have played witches hats the other night
