a deep sense of vindication at a severe injustice! :D

to be serious though, that game has put me firmly in the camp of favouring video reviews. I don't think they would have overturned their penalty decision, but they definitely would have for the one we should have got. I'm also fairly certain that the ball crossed the line for their third, but a camera in the goal upright would have categorically proven the whole ball crossed the whole of the line. the only angles I saw left a (small) amount of doubt as to whether it did.

not sure if I support it for deciding offside though.

I understand your point of view, but I can't say I share it.

Goal line technology which doesn't interfere with the game (a la EPL) is one thing; but stopping to check whether the handball was correct etc. opens up a can of worms I am happy ignoring.

Remember when NRL refs and touch judges actually had to make decisions in a match? Those were the days. And even now with all their bunker rubbish, they still get it wrong at times.

Human error, for players, managers and referees are all part of the rich tapestry that gives us all something to talk about in the post-mortem, and for mine, what makes our game so great

I wonder if a coach and/or captain review system would be the go, similar to cricket and tennis. Get one or two incorrect reviews per half. Might also ease off the ridiculous referee mobbing every time any decision is made ever. If they legitimately think he has made a bad error, they have an actual tool to contest it rather than just abusing the ref over everything to try and influence future decisions.

I don't think everything should be removed from refs, black and white decisions (such as whether the ball has crossed the goal line) are a great example of where technology can make a positive change. Some things like handballs and offsides can be judged pretty accurately by technology but can still be too hard or very difficult to call at times. Getting rid of the real bad obvious mistakes (which I think reviews might handle well) is the main thing. Stuff like challenges and bad tackles etc I don't think technology should go near, even with replays from all angles, you might get some more information but nothing ever looks the same once you've had a few looks and seen it in slow-mo etc, good challenges can look bad and vice versa. Rather just let it play out with the officials having the real-time info.

No - in South America and similar passionate countries I have no doubt they would use their reviews very quickly and then we would be back to the status quo. Under no circumstances should the players have control of reviews - it is killing cricket (I still don't believe the ball tracker is 100% accurate), where it is used as a tactic to punt on possibilities rather than clarify blunders. If anything leave it to the fourth official to watch the video and flag when he sees an issue or let the ref pass it on for verification if not sure.

As has been mentioned - sometimes after several views a decision is still not clear.

I believe human error is a vital part of sport - if everyone was perfect there would be no results. Harden up and leave it as it is.

But seriously, I'm for Goal line technology, but this VAR stuff I don't like. Look at what happened in the club World Cup. The game was 70m away from the box, and the ref called it back after 2 minutes. Just bring in the Additional Assistant Referee's and most of the problems will go.

The technology is for generating advertising revenue not for correcting incorrect referee / umpiring decisions. If we want the Umpires / referees to do a better job we need to pay them more and keep the bookmakers away from them.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I like the idea of having a ref standing basically 5-10m beside the goalpost (opposite side to AR) to help call anything that happens in the box. If they think something should be pulled up, they raise their flag, otherwise play continues. It's an extra set of eyes from a different angle, it doesn't disrupt play, and if it improves decisions by even a small percentage, then happy days.

Nothing will ever be perfect. As someone else mentioned, the NRL are trying that and possibly making things worse every year. I was dragged along to some local league games a few years ago and it was great not seeing everything freeze for 5 minutes after a try - a team scored, ref pointed to the ground, half the crowd cheered immediately. They didn't need 230 camera angles to decide whether the guy's fingernail scraped the ball for "downward pressure" or any of that BS. Who wants football to become like that?

We got shafted with the Victory game when we possibly would have lost anyway. We got lucky against Adelaide. Swings & roundabouts.

Just bring in the Additional Assistant Referee's and most of the problems will go.

Why?

The whole reason we need tech assistance is cause all humans are useless and make mistakes at crucial times. If we start checking handball then there be checks for heaps of other stuff.

Only 2 checks are needed. Ball over the line and offside, the rest is up to the cheating refs and astute assistants.

The talk for bridge could well have been to put the wind up the two Scandinavians and get them producing more?

That, and bridge back in the team would would one could be realized to use a visa spot elsewhere in the squad.

With the recent developements of weak ankles knee being no good, I think we've firmed as chance to sign him. If his hip goes, go get bridge on the back of your shirt.

It's moments like this that sway my opinion on Jones from passable coach who may improve to outright moron - why is he so intent on giving wankles a comfortable retirement plan at our expense? He's never been a Joel and he never will be, if we want to throw big money at him (and I couldn't see wankles coming here unless we were offering far more than he's worth at this point in his career with his best football being behind him), I cannot see the value in it, he was too half-assed to be a Newy legend in the days when he did play for us, why would he become one now when he doesn't even appear to fit the mold of the team we're building?

A player like Bridge suits Jones style more. Breaking fast. Counter attacking. In my opinion this is the reason Kokko doesn't get a start. Not saying he is right but people will have their opinions. Probably the reason Nordstrand is getting a start. Chase long balls into corners, breaking the line etc. It's why I think O'Donovan would probably interest Jones so much. All my thoughts. Which are usually bullshit 11/10 times.

Agree with the comments on Kokko, a good outlet who can link up with those around him is crucial. Having said that I thought Clut performed the hold up role excellently a few games back, I can't remember who against. Received a lot of passes under heavy contest from defenders, hardly lost it and probably won 5 free kicks from being fouled after beating his closest marker. Had a great first half and was subbed around 55 for Nordstrand. I think it was at home against Adelaide.

Hopefully it will come out as the season progresses why Kokko is still not involved, he must be close to if not fully recovered from the jaw but didn't even make the bench for last game. I really hope we get to see him play some minutes and show what he can do.

This article from two days ago on TWG says we are out of the hunt.

Would be sweet to have a player like Risdon come here. We will probs end up with Neville now. I didn't have anything against the bloke when he was here but I really see Hoffman and him as a like for like player.

I think Neville is better going forward which is strange given Hoffman started as a striker/wide forward. I love some of Nev's defensive work he did for us but most of that was desperation clearance type stuff after he and/or others were out of position after coughing up the ball.

I think Hoff would have to be a cheaper option... the whole local lad thing. I certainly don't think we need both, especially with Cowburn a longer term and local option for Hoff's spot if needed. If we sign Neville, we're not really identifying a major weakness in the side, barely improving, and that's not how you build a successful squad.

There was plenty of talk of heading to Europe. May be letting his contract run down to do that. The 'move out of WA' statement (as opposed to 'my dream of playing in Europe') does suggest he may move to another A-League side though.

Hollands skill level is about five tiers below his salary demands. The state funded CSL teams can accommodate him but no A-League team should even bother when you can do a lot better for a lot less money.
His main problem is that he cruises around like a marquee No. 10 when he defends and offers sweet fa in attack. he's become very lazy since he was a Jet all those years ago.

The highlights for A league are terrible. I watch 15 minute highlight vids of EPL games that can capture the majority of the relevant moments of play. You see a two minute highlight package of A league games, one minute of which is multiple replays from equally bad angles of the same incident, and the rest is the two or three best passages of play that the "bigger" team had in the game.

Ha - tried to watch highlights of any overnight football game on NBN news? If there is more than one goal you won't see them all. Just as an aside, but something that needs to be very carefully looked at, is the way some of these headlines are worded.

The president of Australia's first gay soccer club, Sydney Rangers FC, has called for one-year bans for all fans involved in the display of an anti-gay banner during the Sydney Derby.

emphasis mine.
but 'anti-gay'?

because somehow the debate quickly shifts to whether this is 'anti-gay' or 'hate speak' rather than focusing on the idiots that did it.

Depends on your POV, as a hetero white bloke I would call it homophobic/derogatory. I wouldn't see that as specifically anti-gay.
Not being gay myself however, I couldn't and wouldn't assume how anyone in the LGBTQI community felt about it.

I see the banner as meaning that Graham Arnold is a cocksucker, with the undertone of implying homosexuality in a negative way (which of course is wrong in this case, because he's just a total khunt, which has asshole undertones without the homosexuality aspect). We haven't come too far though. Throughout most houses at Cambridge University between 1890-1950's economics was called the gay science simply because an overwhelming majority of the academics participated in same sex relations. On the other hand though, these same people were very influential with respect to public policy / government and would never have condoned same sex relations between anyone in the general public. In fact, the many of these academics even had wives.
It all goes back to the divide and conquer strategies of many religions and not only has it captured religious types it seems to have grabbed a few atheists and agnostics as well.
In my family I have several gay members and none of them or their partners would be offended by the poster, and none of them think gay marriage should be a priority given other aspects of society require far more urgent attention.
Hence, when people automatically assume that a few loud individuals speak for the entire group most times you are going to be missing the truth by a fair margin.

I'd still prefer O'Caravan added to our squad - if Mateo gets citizenship we'll have one visa spot, and if Leilei goes back to China that would be two, but I'd expect Leilei's spot to be filled by another Chinese player (and possibly Mateo's vacancy as well, neither of which will be as good as Leilei, so as a minimum Martin needs to bring us first team u23 internationals), we could end up with no vacant visa spots if Martin insists on Chinese development players though...

I'd hardly call them rejects. I'd Kalfalah as better then Austin and Ingham but for some reason they are above him. Also marinkovic is a pretty good goal scoring mid which we do not have. You have to remember these squads are far and above ours. And until Lee shows otherwise I can hardly see us spending as much on our squad as they do

It wouldn't really be any different that what we currently do. Our squad turns over pretty much every 3 years and Visa players are lucky to see out a season.

However, he fails to address the manner in which the team have been playing the most of the season as another reason we have missed the finals yet again.

Lowey wrote this:

For me, comparisons are odious

But for the x amount of paragraphs leading up to that line, he:
- used the word "compare" once.
- defines the divide in the "haves and have nots".
- specifically groups the Jerks with the Mariners & Wellington (and get this, for comparison sake).
- singles out Graham Arnold & Sydney FC multiple times.
- relates his arguments to ANOTHER CODE, specifically bringing up Brisbane Broncos, Melbourne Storm, and their respective coaches.
- highlights Gui Amor's failings this year compared to last year.

I guess I'm going to have to agree with Lowey - comparisons are odious.

This article is solely about him defending his mate Jones, and basically nothing else. He's arguably done it in a way that can be agreeable, don't get me wrong, but it's just too easy to see thru it all IMO.

For the younger people here that don't know Chelsea FC used to be absolutely useless as a football team until they got an owner with deep pockets and replaced all their shit players with foreign talent.
I'd like to see the rules changed so the Jets could do the same thing - All foreign players, owner with deep pockets, and absolutely no local / domestic players in the squad unless they are good enough.
Get rid of the Salary Cap as well and remove the ridiculous concessions with respect to Marquee players of all different flavours, forcing clubs to meet a quota of youth players / under 21's.
As far as Youth Leagues go - Get rid of them as well. Local associations can develop junior talent and they can on sell them to any Senior team wanting their services - globally or domestically.
None of this growing the local game or doing it for the future of the Socceroos shit - Just give us a team capable of winning the A-League and Asian Champions League - or don't bother us at all.
It should never be up to the A-league clubs to feed the national team - It's a completely different business model and should be treated as such.

EDIT: And this playing in summer shit needs to be reviewed as well.

Chelsea have always had sprinkles of good players and were mostly a solid mid-lower table team. And if your referring to Roman Abramovich the players in the couple of years before he took over were very good, Maybe not world class or of that level but very good

No problem with summer football as long as ALL games are after sunset.

Nah 5pm Sunday is the best time and nothing will ever change the fact. In fact all fans constantly beg foxsports and the FFA to play 5pm sunday and they answer us by scheduling all these 5pm games

1.Keep the salary cap.
2. Scrap any 'marquee' criteria.
3. Let clubs sign whoever they want.
4. Introduce a luxury tax.
5. History says the rest will work itself out.

1. Scrap the salary floor. At least let the have nots save lots of money instead of running at huge loss every year. Still finish in bottom 4 due to shit squad and no marquees, no change except no bankruptcy.
2. Jets shaped hats
3. Full strength beer
4. Griff
