First "marquee" I've seen us sign and think he looks ready to play.
That finish he hit at training floating around on Facebook makes it a little too easy to get excited.
Hope he hits the ground running come season start.

When did BK get back?

That because old mate Ronaldo seen where the keeper was and put it wide of him giving him no hope
It what decent players do
It been that long since we had one you have forgotten it not just a random kick at the goals
What about the toe poke into the top corner??

"Idiotic Eureka Moment" for me this morning.
Looked up Roddy Vargas to see if there was a connection - didn't realise he was Australian. Always thought he was an import! Duh.

5 years ago today we signed Heskey on a million dollar deal
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/345630/heskey-agrees-to-terms-on-1m-deal-with-jets/?cs=303
5 years later and we signed a player who is likely to be far better, for less money.
Maybe we may have learnt something from the period of shite

Heskey was fantastic in his first season and the crowds were the highest they'd been since Season 2 and 3 following his signature. I don't think his impact should be underestimated.
That's a big claim to put to on someone who is yet to competitively kick a ball for us.

when did heskey get run through the back of by a victory player in a trial? was it his second season?

A big claim to say that Vargas is a techinically better player than Heskey?
Because that's all I was meaning from that.
I don't expect him to be the ticket sale master like Heskey was

No worries. I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you were talking about the player as the entire package - on field and off field.

Might have been. His second season was distrupted by injuries, particularly in the first half of the season (which aligns with what you're saying). His absence gave Taggart his chance.

It was definitely his second season
First season he only got here late in the pre season and didn't play until the first HAL match
Second season he got nailed in a behind doors match at AAMI v the Tards

I don't have a problem with that per se, as he will need to produce the goods on the pitch to get offered a big pay day over there. Better than having a 35 year old coming out for a retirement kick about and producing FA on the pitch.

this is the problem with marquees in this league, in that they get pounded week in week out by no-mark spuds like this doofus

Think we're jumping the gun here, big difference between watching Vargas on the ball v watching Castro. Each time Castro had the ball he was a threat, can't say I feel the same watching Vargas - YET. Perth would be a pretty shit team if they didn't have Castro, I would liken Vargas only to the point that he and the team still need to gel, and he has to make allowances for the fact some of our players aren't what he is used to (e.g. a few passes he tried to make didn't stick, which may have had more to do with the quality of the receiver rather than the pass itself...)

Castro is pretty much unstoppable and rarely if ever turns over posession. Vargas has skill and flair but he doesn't have the control or consistency of Castro. Very happy we have Vargas but Castro is still the best player in the league.

He did trip over the ball right in front of Bay 1 though :roflz:

This!
Go back and watch Castro's first 2 months with Glory. He was hopeless, I remember thinking he was a dud signing. He well and truly proved me wrong. When he is on, no team will stop him in the A-League. Vargas looks like he will dominate, maybe not quite at Castro's level but I'd love to be wrong again (I often am!)

The guy has shown class in his very short time here, and yeah his injury was pretty bad, but does anyone else find the outpouring of emotion a little cringey? Usually a minute's applause is reserved for someone who's died, or who tragically can't play the game anymore due to a career-ending injury.

The bloke is class and on a one year contract, from memory he was looking to use the A-League and Marty as a step to China.
If myself/us can make him feel loved and welcome to convince him to stay around for a lot longer and us giving him some support by clapping in unison for one minute could help keep him here, then my oath I'm going to clap.

Say he wasn't fit to come back this season, or he did come back but due to fitness wasn't starting. Would we offer him another marquee contract or try get him on wages in the cap?

If he gets the all clear from medical and physio side of things I'd be super happy for him to play again as marquee. Blokes a gun. Who you planning to sign as marquee that is gonna push Ronny out from that spot?

Slightly unrelated but.....
So did anyone else notice on the foxtel coverage the "expert" medical staff (to use the term loosely) were about to roll Ronnie onto his broken ankle to put him on the stretcher, Matt McKay starts yelling at them and they lift up the stretcher, hand it over to the other side and roll him onto his right side before rolling him back onto the stretcher?
I've seen so many stories saying what a great job they did.. but really?? Is Matt McKay better qualified than the Brisbane Roar medical staff?

Can't say I was watching at that stage
The injury had made me want to look away and wait for play to resume etc
Don't they have an ambo on site??
They did on Sunday at the Southern End there waiting
I would have thought for large scale events with crowds of 10k etc like HAL games it be mandated that ambo on site so many first aid staff etc
Also don't they have a heap of StJohn ambulance volunteers at Jets games ??
Where exactly are these people in Brisvegas??
Moon boot is now off and he can start putting load on his leg
Bert claiming late Feb early March he back on the park
Hope he stays on track
great. Just in time to finish 7th. Thanks weak ankles 2.0.
