The Jetstream is excited to officially announce the upcoming release of “The Championship Chronicles”, a special series of podcasts to commemorate 10 years since the Newcastle Jets won the A-League.
This series, 3 years in the making, has been produced to allow the fans recall the best season as a supporter of the Newcastle Jets. It will also recognise those involved on and off the field for their contribution to creating lasting memories for everyone in attendance at Energy Australia Stadium that year.
With the first episode due to hit your ears November 22nd, David Keating (@jeterpool) will take a chronological look over the entire season – from recruitment to the Pre-Season Cup campaign, the whole A-League season and, of course, the finals series.
Over 9 episodes, you will hear from 24 former players, coaches, media and administrators involved with that successful campaign – including Gary van Egmond, Joel Griffiths, Jade North, Ante Covic, Adam Griffiths, Remo Nogorotto, Stuart Musialik, Matt Thompson, Andrew Durante, Mark Bridge, Tarek Elrich Adam D’Apuzzo, James Holland, Noel Spencer, Paul Kohler, Steve Eagleton, Jason Hoffman, Jobe Wheelhouse, John Tsatsimis and Aaron Kearney. All talking points, goals, victories, defeats, highs and lows are discussed – and includes some stories and insights you haven’t heard before!
The episodes are titled:
• Episode 1 – Continuing The Momentum (Released 22nd November 2017)
The Jets have finished the 2006/07 season with a heart breaking loss to Adelaide and are facing the task of replacing key players who have departed. We review the process of recruiting new additions, the pre-season cup and the first 4 rounds of the A-League.
• Episode 2 – Starting to Build (Released 6th December 2017)
The Jets are undefeated in the A-League and we cover the team’s results in the A-League between Round 5 and Round 10.
• Episode 3 – Coming Back to Earth (Released 20th December 2017)
The Jets are cruising in the A-League, sitting comfortably in the Top 4. However, during the month of November the team began to falter, as we cover the matches between Round 11 and 16.
• Episode 4 – Flying Towards the Finals (Released 10th January 2018)
There are 4 games for the Jets to cement their spot in the Grand Final prior to the end of the A-League season. We cover the Jets end of the regular season between Round 17 and 21, including the unique situation in Round 21 where all Top 4 teams were on the same points, playing teams outside finals contention.
• Episode 5 – The Rivalry Resumes (Released 24th January 2018)
The Jets and Mariners face off in the Semi Final after finishing 2nd and 1st place respectively. We cover the home and away legs in this fixture, with the winner progressing to the Grand Final.
• Episode 6 – The Greatest Match of the Season (Released 8th February 2018)
After Queensland Roar defeated Sydney, they travelled to Newcastle to face the Jets in the Preliminary Final. This episode focusses on one of the greatest matches in Newcastle football history as the Jets progress to the Grand Final and, at the same time, qualify for the Asian Champions League.
• Episode 7 – The Ultimate F3 Derby (Released 15th February 2018)
The Jets will face the Mariners at the Sydney Football Stadium in the Grand Final. This episode covers the lead up to the match, including training, the memories of the players of what they remember around town, the trip down the F3 and untold stories as the team prepared for the match. Also – we pay tribute to the giant TIFO unveiled by the Squadron and learn how it came to be.
• Episode 8 – We Got It! We Won It! It’s Ours! (Released 24th February 2018)
The Jets kick off the Grand Final and the one of the biggest match in Newcastle football’s storied history begins. We cover the match, the (spoilers!) celebrations and the team’s trip back up the F3 to celebrate the fans in Adamstown.
• Episode 9 – Season Reflection (Released 1st March 2018)
In the final episode, we cover the after-math of the Grand Final, hear some additional stories from the players and hear what that season meant to all players in the squad.
The Jetstream is a podcast run by a group of fans simply for their love of the team. We would love your support to help spread the word to all Jets fans to allow them the opportunity to hear from their favourite players and experience, again, the emotional rollercoaster that was Season 2007/2008.

Created a thread for people to discuss the stories from the series when it comes out.
As you may be aware, a handful of people have road-tested the series so far and they've enjoyed it - and found some errors for me to fix! :P
But in all honesty, would love for people to share their memories of events that are covered in the series. It will build a valuable history of that fantastic season.

The Championship Chronicles WOW.
Traveling through the USA over the last 6 weeks I was lucky enough to be given an advanced copy of this amazing series.
I regularly listen to 5/6 podcasts a week. They vary from football, photography to technology but the one thing they all have in common is the professionalism they are put together and the way they are presented.
With regard to the Championship Chronicles, I have to say, this is up there with the very best.
Ok with the quality and standards sorted a great pod is about the content and this series has it in spades.
These pods had me laughing, cheering, swearing, choking up with emotion and tears Welling in my eyes. And all of this happening while flying from one City to another.
On more the one occasion the Minister for War and Finance grabbed my leg, tapped me on the shoulder holding her finger to her mouth to sshhh me. At one point I cheered so loud my with put her hand over my mouth to shut me up, while other passengers turned and gave death stares for scaring the shit out of them.
The Championship Chronicles are of such a high standard I really hope they are picked up by a local radio to show how important the the Jets are too, not only their fans, but the region as well.
As for Daves efforts. The Chronicles show what a talent he has for telling a story and I hope this isn't the last we see him do this sort of thing.
After everyone listens to the Chronicles maybe we can do a bit of crowd funding to encourage him to do more.
Great effort Dave.
this is the best thing related to our club that has happened since 24-02-08

I highly encourage the club to do something to give him an excuse to do it again :rof:

Didn't get the chance to bring it up
If me makes any Knights comparisons, change the subject.
And there were no Knights comparisons that I can recall. I certainly kept it all football related. Though I did get a question without notice around shirt pulling and why it isn't policed. Not anything to do with the work I had done, but still said what I thought.
JR on KOFM also gave me a bit of a plug yesterday which was nice.
Just a final reminder that the first episode is out tomorrow. It covers the reaction to the loss against Adelaide, the recruitment drive adn the first 4 rounds of that season.

Listened to it on the drive back to Newcastle from Sydney tonight. Made the roadworks enjoyable.
Excellent work. I admit, wasn’t sure what to expect, but your vision of this project, what you wanted to include, how you wanted to tell the story and the execution is very professionally done.
Adam Griffiths sounds ridiculously bored with life.
Enjoyed listening to GVE, Hoffman, Remo and Joel.
I enjoyed the audio of the goals and my goodness how good does the crowd sound.
I have to ask, did you die a little when Joel said he didn’t care much for statistics?

I really appreciate your feedback. The approach was only one of the ways I could have gone. I also considered a series of individual interviews but the manner of recording and what I thought would be disjointed, jumping conversation meant the chronological approach was the most appropriate.
Adam was terrific and you'll hear more and more how he comes across. He's very intelligent and quite dry in his humour. There's one thing he says in I think episode 5 that makes him Newy.
As for Joel...I just keep telling myself he was joking :rof: He's ended up contacting me a few times around stats - like the cap numbers on the back of the warm-up shirts.

Dave - questions on the Chrons
Some of the people you interviewed, it sounds as if you were at a cafe/restaurant. My questions are:
- which cafes/restaurants did you head to? Was there a "regular" spot?
- if you and your interviewee both drank/ate there, who paid for it? Whom was happy to split evenly, whom made sure that you paid for the extra coffee you had, or were you gracious as hell and offered to pay for all?
- what was the weirdest drink/food order that any of your interviewees ordered?
- Adam Griffiths is a soy/almond milk kinda guy, right?

Hi pv4,
Thanks for the questions
1. I generally did interviews at the Locale, but with their early closing times I actually moved some of tehm to Wests. The noise of the buses caused me some issues so indoors was needed - Wests was easy and central.
2. We generally had a coffee. The paying depended on the person. I always went to pay, but some insisted because of what I was doing, which was very nice and appreciate. No food was consumed because it was after work I was doing the interviews.
3. No weird drinks
4. Don't know what Adam was drinking because we spoke over Skype.
Sincerely,
JP

I loved Griffo saying about the Gypos "I genuinely didn't like them".
On a side note, I can hear myself getting a little bit more fluent as the series goes along. I didn't realise in the older episodes just how jittery I was!

Did you appreciate Adam Griffiths calling them "Central Coast bogans"? I was lucky I had the microphone on mute. I burst out laughing.
And poor old Thommo trying to remember that shot in the semi final, and then realising what it all meant and going through the heartache again. To be there and see that emotion was the best.
I also felt the GvE comment around not working for them was a bit of a dig at Lawrie too. I think it was around that time Gary had missed out on the Emerging Jets gig to Michael Cooper.

There will also be Episode 7 released next week on Tuesday. I've said it a few times but it is the favourite of all the episodes. It will cover the lead up to the Grand Final, the training sessions, the move to the back 3 and what the players thought, the hotel the night before and the build up to the grand final, the player's reactions to the giant TIFO, how the Giant TIFO came to be and finishing at the point the kick off.

Adam D'Apuzzo's comments about conceding the penalty in the 90th minute were really interesting.
It's something I consider relfects the current team's culture.
And also Tarek talking about scoring THAT goal  "Now ****ing chase me"
Finally - did anyone else get tingles listening to the call from Aaron Kearney? I pulled the bloody thing together and I get tingles listening to it every time.
What stands out to me is the noise from the crowd. I really hope we get the chance to experience finals football at home again.

Got to ask....was Matt Thompson a litte Brahms and Listz during those interviews? Certainly sounds a little 'emotional'
Nope, he'd just come from work and didn't even have a beer while we sat down. We were there for over an hour and a half. Thommo came across as someone who played the game that was in front of him and if I could have shown him footage i'm sure he'd have remembered quicker. Give him credit, it was 10 years ago and I was asking about specific moments in time and it all blurred a bit. In saying that, he was one of the most genuine and open with his responses from the get-go.
Glad you enjoyed the episode :)

Next episode is out tomorrow!
Episode 7 covers the the week leading up to the grand final - the training, the trip down, what happened in the team hotel, getting to the stadium, the dressing room, the player's thoughts on the TIFO, GazFish telling us about how the TIFO came to be. If you haven't listened to this before, I urge you this is the one to hear. It's getting to the business end of the series now, with 4 episodes left.
Can I ask as well - no spoilers for the first few days. There's a story in there that you find out hasn't been shared. Let's leave it a few days before discussing. Also, anyone on here that was involved in getting the giant TIFO to happen - Furns, boz, etc, I hope you enjoy hearing what the players thought when they saw the TIFO unveiled.
If any moderators of the various Newcastle Jets Supporter Facebook pages are reading this, I'd really appreciate you sharing the pod tomorrow. This episode is the reason why I did it.

I think Gary's legacy has been tainted by his return in the second period. His involvement in the title-winning season shouldn't be forgotten.
Having only spent an hour talking to him, I can only say he was brilliant with me. He was open and candid - as you've all heard.

That's the part I've been disappointed in. They did send out a social media release of episode 1, and recently put a link in their e-newsletter for episode 6. I've had to try go through other channels, such as Football Nation Radio, the Herald, ABC and of course the Jetstream, to get the word out. Even tried some one of the Jets Supporters facebook groups but they have chosen to, so far, disregard my request despite saying they would.
But at the end of the day, the people who have heard it have enjoyed it. It's brought back memories of great times and that's what I wanted to do. As I've always said about the series - it's for our fans and the players.

until hearing Remo's bits, I'd not realised that all credit for everything should go to him
I considered asking JT and Remo but didn't. I kinda just thought let it be.
I fully understand why you didn't push the issue, but I have to say the lack of Con in the Chrons is the one thing I think was missing. Particularly after Remo's great insights, it would have been great to get Con's insights and point of view. Something that really hit home about Con though, was when you talked to Tarek and he told you when Con left the club he did what seems like a clearout and just scrapped/gave away all his stuff, notably giving Tarek the aerial shot of the GF Tifo. Maybe even if you did approach Con, he wouldn't have wanted to be apart of it. Maybe he wiped his hands of this club for good, which makes me upset thinking about that tbh.
What you've done with these Chrons is truly amazing, the best thing a supporter has ever done for this club imo. So don't take my Con sentiments the wrong way. I just wish I had these great detailed stories from Con's perspective too. You know me though, if you interviewed every Novocastrian ever about that year I'd listen to them all and love every minute - so I'd never be fully satisfied :rof::oops:

Other than through Remo and JT (who I had to get access to via WSW, so it was an approach through another person, not direct) I didn't know how to contact him. Do I ring Parklea markets and ask? Not many know how long it takes to chase people up for these things. It's often twice the time spent interviewing them. And if I had to travel to Sydney, I didn't really have the time.
I'm not taking it the wrong way, and it would have been nice, but I tried hard to get Laybutt and Hearfield in as well but couldn't get that across the line. To get 24 was more than I expected. And to be honest, the whole thing with a second kid that didn't sleep, still doing the regular podcast and full time work left me exhausted.

Sounds like both were expecting to stay but the club revised their offers. From what I can remember at the time, and GVE basically repeated it Con thought the lifestyle would keep the players here and saw it as an opportunity to offer them less.

Man... After hearing both of them talk, I want to take back every bad thing I've said about them post-leaving..
Its funny how at the time and in the heat of the moment, its very easy to just go "oh, what a piece-of-sh!t" but you obviously don't realise whats going on in the background or other elements that come in to play..
They both sounded genuinely upset/perturbed to have been put in the position they were in at the time.. (and for that to emanate in how and what they said, 10 years on, is quite amazing)

Joe's call on Adam - I nearly lost it when he said it. So many times during the series I had to bite my tongue because I wanted to laugh, be in awe or interject but I just had to let them go.
Thanks mate :) appreciate the words - and thanks for telling all your mates about it too.

Now the final episode has come out, I've just got to say thank you to everyone on here who have said such kind words about the series. I've read every one, and think I've responded to them all! Sorry if I missed any.
The fact you all enjoyed it made it all worthwhile. I've said it in the various interviews I've done, but it's fot fans like us that I wanted to do this. We've had to put up with so much shit since that time that I can't even decide where to start listing it, so we needed something to lift our spirit and capture a massive achievement in the City's history.
Cheers as well to Jetmaster for the help with audio - not just the ABC call, but also trying to resolve some of the issues I was experiencing with the quality. He's been awesome and doesn't deserve his red bar :gent:
When I started, I had no idea how to compile an audio track and unsure how many people I would talk to. I recorded on my ipad in cafe's and clubs, over skype and finally found late in the piece something to record on my phone. Not ideal, but it wasn't about that - it was about what the players said.
To speak with people who seem inacecssible to me all those year ago, to meet them and interview them - I was very fortunate. That was a perk of the whole project and a great experience.
Thanks for listening, everyone

Really? Dave Weiner got in touch with me and asked for some material but thought it might have been for a podcast.

Cheers mate - as promised, once the Chronicles had concluded I would like to put up the two ABC recordings used, in full. Here they are, uncut and complete with old style analogue noise (this is what I worked with Dave on).
To celebrate a mighty fine project, enjoy 11 hours of wonderful excitement.

Listening now by the way - sad for Stu. Very sad. But I stick by all my bagging of Bridge though. He was always going. Will continue to boo
Edit: love Tarek. His comments make me dislike bridge even more

This is the best series ever. Everyone involved should be so proud. I just finished the series with my son who wasn't born when we won and talking about it with him and listening to the stories together is a memory I'll have for a long time so thank you. Some of that audio just gives you goose bumps when you listen to it

Started working through this during the week and listened to about 3 episodes on the way up yesterday. Will probably finish it on the way home (we just beat brisbane to reach the grand final). Interesting insights, although covic does seem to drone on a bit! 😁
And griff - we played shit so we went out for a night on the piss! Unbelievable.
Well done jeterpool (and anybody else involved). Here's hoping you can start another one next sunday!

Had my son at the game and he asked if it was like 10yrs ago after listening to the series. He can't wait to be at the game and is making us listen to the series this week again to get 'pumped up'. Gee I'd love Aaron Kearney to call this game and bring back the memories. How goods this week going to be

For those interested, there is now a separated page for the Championship Chronicles where you don't have to scroll through all the old episodes to find them if you wanted to listen again

Enough negative waves Dave. I was going to delete my recordings of ABC commentaries over the last two games...BUT....
This is like 2006-2008. A first season where we were entertainers and the heartbreak of being knocked out on pens in Adelaide. Then a year later and victory.
It's only halftime in Chronicles 2....

We also lost Nicky Carle after season 2 and thought the sky was falling. So this off-season, we'll lose Petratos and everyone will think we'll go backwards. It's all part of the plan...

Age and wisdom prevails in times like this - in my time I have witnessed...
KB United drag in 16,000 for a for a home cup semi final and lose on penalties.
A Griff led United fall short at home in an NSL preliminary final.
Lose pen shootout in 2007 in Adelaide.
Iran '97.
Lucas Neill 2006.
This is a walk in the park....but we need to maintain the rage of that VAR cockup.

For me Lucas Neill was the worst - there's no coming back from a WC elimination. There's basically no tomorrow - by the time the next WC comes, everything is different. At least the Jets can start again next season and we have a whole season to fondly look back on. This GF loss is up there though because of the hard slog of the last 10 years.
The gravity of Iran didn't sink in at the time - I was 15. The Jets pen shootout also didn't affect me as much - probably because it was away from home, against a much more fancied side. It also felt like we had built a good side and our time would come. It's like Sydney/Melb City losing a semi now - I'm sure it stings, but both sets of fans know full well they'll be back in the finals next year barring something out of the ordinary.

Your age might have saved you
That Iran game was the worst by a long way.
We dominated that game. In the first half we were all over them like a rash. They had no answer.
Kewell scored finally and we were off and running
When HT come we maintained the rage and when Vidmar tapped in we were in France
Then ****wit Hoare jumped the fence.
2 goals from nothing against the run of play in minutes and we are going out on away goals.
We still hammered them the last 15 mins but couldnt get the goal.
It was highway robbery of biblical scale.
I have never felt so dissappointed after a game as then.
This weekend wasnt even close to the depression that night in 1997 not even close

Agree with you this time Member....that night is the most desolate and depressing I have witnessed in 40 years watching football. There has never been hurt like it and I have never watched that game again.
The first goal being so obviously offside made it worse.

I also think I wasn’t invested in the Socceroos back then either, so the gravity of the match didn’t hit me. I’m not sure why, I was playing from the age of 9 and had been going to Breakers games with dad a lot, but the Aussies just weren’t on the radar. I didn’t grow up with soccer fans in the family so I think I had to discover a lot of it myself over time.
