TALKING POINTS:

General

A Jets win will be their 100th in the A-League.
The Jets have the same points and goal difference this season as they did after 2 rounds last year.
There were 13 goals scored across the 3 fixtures between these clubs last year.

Players

If Roy O'Donovan scores this weekend, he will become the first Jets player since Edson Montano to score in 3 consecutive appearances.
Nikolai Topor-Stanley could make his 84th A-League appearance for the club, taking him to 9th overall, surpassing Joel Griffiths.
Michael Theo hasn't kept a clean sheet against the Jets in his last 8 matches.
Theo willalso play his 27th A-League match against the Jets, the 4th most of any opposition player against Newcastle.
Ben Kantarovski and Roy O'Donovan both scored their 4th A-League goal for the Jets. This is the same number of goals Tarek Elrich, Enver Alivodic, Ali Abbas and Nikolai Topor-Stanley have scored for the club.

Newcastle Jets

The Jets have kept just 1 clean sheet in the last 12 months. It has been 11 matches without keeping their opposition scoreless.
Newcastle have never had more than 5 points after their opening 3 A-League fixtures.
Newcastle have scored the first goal 3 times in the last 4 matches between these teams.
However, the Jets have conceded the opening goal in their last 8 competitive fixtures (A-League and FFA Cup).
Three Jets players have been booked in the last 6 matches.

The team will continue to play exciting football and because of that I'd be quietly confident of us getting the three points. Brisbane might turn things around but if they start off slow against the Jets attack it might be over before half time for them.

Interesting conversation on the pod this week. Pv4 thought he'd rest Vargas and start Brown to let the game settle in before bringing Vargas on in the 2nd half.

Me, I thought focus on ourselves, play our best team and go for the jugular. Vargas needs game time. He lasted 60-odd, then 70-odd.

What approach would you take with the line-up?

Rather see more of Vargas than Brown. If you start Brown surely you're committing him for at bare minimum the first half if not an hour. Which we know Vargas has that in him already. In Merrick's interview after the Perth game, he reckoned Vargas would be getting close to completing the game against Brisbane.

I know Brown has been copping a touch of criticism following his performance last week (which I think wasn't helped by the tactical move to a midfield 3), but do people thing he's taking time to get up to the speed of the game, which is why he's looking a bit stifling?

Not really interesting

All I see is a Gypo saying the best player the club has signed since Griff , a bloke who shows quality that sets him apart should not be playing

Yeah let's just try and lose the game etc

Haven't heard anything that stupid since Muppet sacked Griff and thought we go better without him

I feel like a lot of Brown's value is in his industry and work rate, which is probably wasted to some extent later in the game when its cooled off a bit. A one man pressing show won't get much done.
He is probably a bit slicker than the average a-league midfielder but I wouldn't say he is a silky type like Vargas is who's going to unlock defences and create chances with great touches or passes. Although I hope he gets some time as the season goes on and can prove me wrong there. Last years pre season and early season he looked great.

but if you start Vargas and Brown then you drop Kanta or Sugar I assume?

I would yes. I don't think Kanta or Ugar necessarily deserves to be dropped so I'd be leaving things where the are for the moment. I'm quite happy with both our wingers, and want Vargas in the middle. Brown is a central player to me so he's vying for the 6, 8 or 10 which is Kanta, Ugar and Vargas. I don't think he holds a candle to Vargas from an attacking sense so unless he can take one of the other two's spots then he may have to bide his time.

I was proven right on that

Bloke played done nothing and faded out for 3 years all because GVE didn't listen to me

Playing Roar with their possession shit you want a bloke like Vargas on there to give you the brilliance when you get possession

It's refreshing to have some solid competition for spots this season.

Across the back, Hoffman and Jackson will be looking to start. Brown in the centre of the park. Moss at keeper.

Right now leave it as is. On current form I don’t see Kanta or Ugabooga being the problem.

My sister had a similar injury falling down some steps on a wet day

It took her a long long long time to get mobile again

I would not be expecting him back this season at all

Not only that it probably career threatening too as he going to have lots of ongoing problems

It not a put a cast on it and 6 week later thing he good to go

If only he did. Seemed keen to get sent off with some pretty dumb tackles. He's just not in the same class as Vargas. As soon as we lost Vargas, Roar suddenly thought they could win. Every other team will think that too now.

One coach doesnt rate him and benches him.
Another coach throws him out there, increases his role in the team and hes been our best through 3 rounds.

what i love about vujica isthat he always looks like he doesn't quite believe he's actually out there. busting a gut and having fun. what more could you want?

i thought he was just cramping up at the end. physio didn't seem too worried when he went down.

Think you got me mistaken I ain't ridden him at all

My main gripe with him is his lack of speed feel it makes him a potential weakness

Problem is with Boogaard back there no one worrying about picking on Vujica speed too much as they just missing out on the lulz Boogaard offers

Vujica was just conserving energy knowing not to bother because the gypo was never going to control it anyway.

Shame about the injury cause it really overshadowed what was, especially pre injury was a great performance from a select few

Vujica's performance was incredible, how long is he signed for cause if he keeps that up it ain't long enough

Roy just keeps finding the back of net, 5 goals in 3 games is crazy good

Nabbout and Dimi were fantastic, if nabbout could learn how to put away his chances we'd be scoring goals left right and centre

Uga and Kanta played a lot better this game then last week, much more control of the middle of the pitch

Shame we boogard in the team, when he leaves and we replace him with someone competent who also warrants the amount of coin he's being paid, this team will be a lot better off

Were you disappointed that O'Donovan celebrated without hesitation in Round 1 then?

FWIW, I think it's up to the individual. If they feel like celebrating, then go for it. If for some reason they think it's more respectful not to, that's cool too.

The goal still stands, not like celebrating makes it worth double

I had an online stream from over here (yew sunday back in country)

You could here it all the time, straight after the VAR decision. Mckay a massive **** Off and arm wave and it was clearly directed at the officials... I thought the ref would really loose the game for a moment there in that 10-15 minute period....

Non-celebration is another new age "nice" thing to do and it shits me.

Fair enough if you were entrenched with a club for years - you wouldn't expect celebrations from Gerard v Liverpool, Terry v Chelsea for example.

The only ex-player I have ever noticed not celebrate against us was Ryan Griffiths in an ACL game (and he only played NSL here at that time). Everyone else has given us the big ones.

Need more Zadz and Roy celebrations - your previous team should be dead to you.
