Victory were less than convincing against City. Bit worried about their wingers against our young fullbacks. On the flip side I think we can have some success attacking Negro/Geria

This is also the game MV need to win to keep on track for 2nd place (Bozza again!)

Muscat is no fool - he knows what will be required to beat Newcastle and he will push the limits of the rules to do it. I reckon it's going to be a grubby game because I don't think Melbourne are good enough to beat us any other way.
The generous odds available on Newcastle to win suggest the referee already has his instructions.

With the risk of it coming back to bite us I believe Muscat is a total fool. He's a one trick pony and reverts to total grub tactics. Too many times I've seen him out of his depth and drop the ball tactically. We shall see tonight.

I threw $5 on the women J’s to win 3-1 (nailed it) and the men to lose 2-0... An FFA/Beath-inspired Victory victory will net me just over a cool 1k. On the off chance that we are somehow going to keep our good form alive, the bet can go south for all I care if we pick up 3pts.

So Georgievski was left out of the squad because he hadn’t trained a full hard week which Ernie said was a rule he put in. Then Ernie said DG paid his own way to Melbourne and trained with the fitness guy before the match. If that’s the general attitude across our squad to be that desperate to play/train, then our club appear to have turned a corner.

I thought I read through the week that Kanta was struggling with a back injury- wonder if that’s why he’s looking so lethargic.

Lethargic??

This is a positioning thing

Him and Ugarkovic should be picking up a lot of free ball in this game

There is a shit load of space in midfield

Problem is it Victree through Milligan and Valeri picking up the free ball from their experience covering the space better

This has nothing to do with fitness but positioning

Fix that and there is a lot more free cheap ball to given to Dimi and Joey C etc early and in space in the second half

Just need to push up a few metres from the back four more than they are

No...I checked the replay and Berisha was in his own half when the ball was played.

After sleeping on it I agree with Ernie's assessment...a young team learning beaten by a better team. It may be a difficult January but we will be very strong by the finals.

On another note, why was Williams not booked for a tackle from behind on Dimi early....whilst Vuj gets one for a shoulder push? I also note that the commentary raved on about how good it was seeing Beath let the game flow.

I'd go as far as to say even if he wasn't in his own half (he was), he was probably still onside. That is, if you magically transposed both Boogaard and Berisha to the other side of the halfway line, reckon Boogaard is still keeping him on...just.

Credit where it's due, Nigel did try to push him offside by quickly jumping over the halfway line just prior to George's pass.

So you just plugged a bloke who failed to sprint 100% to close Berisha down ??

So you just plugged a bloke who actually was nowhere near the opposition striker and when I say nowhere near let's just say 20metres as a conservative estimate ??

So you just plugged a bloke who tried playing an offside trap and got it horribly wrong and got caught out??

Yeah ok

clearly 2nd best, Merrick is a one trick pony.
Dont get me wrong, the one trick is great when he has the players and its working, but when hes not got the cattle or the opposition coach works him out (as GVE used to do) it looks horrid.

Victory deserved the win. The fact Topor was great defending two positions showed just how much they dominated the attack. Credit Muscat for isolating Ivan against Barbarouses, knowing Topor couldnt help cover because that would leave Berisha v Boogaard 1 on 1.

Some teams just match up well against us, if Merrick can find someone to share the attack along with Dimi (and it has to be Ugabooga) and we have our finisher back on deck things will be different. until then, its more of the same coming.

get over it, we lost. we'll prob lose next week. no trophies handed out in January.

clearly 2nd best, Merrick is a one trick pony.
Dont get me wrong, the one trick is great when he has the players and its working, but when hes not got the cattle or the opposition coach works him out (as GVE used to do) it looks horrid.

Exactly. Throw Roy on the end of a few of those chances instead of Hoff or Nabbout and we score another goal or two. Put Vargas or Rodriguez (hopefully) in there and Dimi gets a bit more space. But it’s no different to any other team missing 2 or 3 of their key players. Take Berisha/Barbs/George out of the game last night and they would have been toothless.

Also, put Georgievski in there instead of Johnny and George doesn’t have half the game he does.

yeah this was another good point. Johnny K (out of position) got roasted.

Granted, if you said a few weeks ago we'll get 2 good games, one bad game and a few goals out of Johnny K playing in that role id take it every single time.

now get him in Boogaards spot when Gorgeous George gets back.

Our Fullbacks cost us the game with their ****ing high school level defending every time someone ran at them which in turn gave Topor and Boogs too much to handle

Yeah ok

Your easily pleased then

Crikey, maybe read the whole post before replying...

Only good thing I said was Boogaard tried to force Berisha off by jumping over halfway and hoping he would catch him the other side. He did that, and lined up ready to chase him if need be.

Didn't mention his fleetness of foot, just the intent.

Also, Berisha was on the righthand side of the pitch (our left). Hardly a centre back's nominated territory in that situation.

I fully expect a reply to only the first part of this, as the rest will obviously go unread...

Also, you're*

I will just focus on the last part of your post

The bit where your saying it ok that Boogaard stands in the centre of the park making no one etc
Whilst the competitions gun striker is allowed free reign of the pitch

Exactly what the **** is Boogaard doing ??

He not on the pitch to stand still.

If the striker drifts left you communicate with someone in the back 4 to pick him up or you get on your bike and cover him

Berisha ain't quick but there is no way he should have got to the position he got into on the park.

I haven't gone back to watch, but surely a bloke on the actual side of the pitch where the danger is evident (Berisha) should be the one getting fingers pointed at him.

You say a conservative estimate was 20m; how wide is a typical pitch? 55-60m? so by your own admission the team's Centre Back is in the CENTRE of the park.

Why point fingers at some other blokes??

Boogaard was the bloke back there

Marking no one
Stepped up when he shouldn't have and got it all wrong
Didn't chase at 100% capacity for the entire chase

Could have done a hell of a lot more to make life harder for Berisha than he did

Yet your trying to divert the blame on to someone else ??

Hey I dislike Boogaard more than the next guy except if Plague is the next guy

But the bloke is a liability and cost us again on Friday night

Looking forward to next season and Bert finding someone competent to partner Topor at the back

You understand the offside law, yeh?

OK, in hindsight we can say Berisha would have been onside since he was in his own half when the ball was played. But in that split second, Boogaard did the only thing he could to try and prevent a breakaway.

It was smart, it didn't work out, but the decision making was sound.

I am a vocal detractor of Boogaard, especially with the inflated wage he is (reportedly) on (I won't say earning, because that's a contradiction in terms).

But he did what most in his position would, and to blame him for that is childish, IMHO

Stepping up and doing an offside trap is only smart when it works

When it fails you look like a fool

It a game of Russian Roulette and it suicidal if this bloke is the one with his hand on the trigger

What would have been better if he hadn't of done it to start with and had of started moving towards the ball/ Berisha

What would also be better would be the second it failed he got on his bike and put in 100% sprinting towards Berisha for 100% of the time for his chase back

The decision making was not sound at all. Bloke gambled and lost

Make no mistake about it

hey listen man i dont have that big a problem with his positioning. in fact, if he actually kept pace with Berisha he was in a good spot as it cut down Berishas angle on goal. If Boogaard was way out wide and Berisha got the jump theres zero chance he could have caught him let alone then get around him to get between Berisha and the goals (lets face it Boogs would have gone double studs up from behind and copped the pen and red rinse repeat).

My problem is that Boogaard absolutely misjudged Berishas pace, and set off to chase at half pace. ive watched it back a bunch of times and he laboured for the first 4 or 5 paces then only put a full sprint in once he realised how far behind he was.

ive no doubt if he went full pace from the first step he would have been in a much better position to defend the shot.

(as always IMO) the bottom line is Boogaard made no effect on Berishas shot at goal (and lets not forget it was a pretty fantastic finish).
Boogaard is entirely to blame for letting his man get into that position.

I clap when anybody does something good.
I don’t have a grudge against him. I think he got into some really good positions and his finishing let him down. I’d argue that it was easier to get the ball on target at least. The ball from topor pretty much finds him un marked on the 6yd.

Fair call. It was disappointing I agree, but stuff like that happens in every league in the world. The best strikers miss sitters at times. And Hoffman hasn't played as an out and out striker in eons.

For a fullback, he did about as much as could be expected

I haven't watched it back more than twice, but I didn't notice the labouring first few steps you speak of. I'll take you (and Da Membah) at your word as you've seen it more than I
