Big test to see how the team respond.
We've been flat, rode our luck against the Mariners and Roar before getting punished for it against City.
I expect there will be a change or 2, maybe 3.

It's also been 25 away games since we kept a clean sheet. The last being against the Mariners in Gosford when we broke our streak down there 1-0.

I expect Moss and Kanta to both come back into the starting lineup. Brown wasn't the problem against Wellington but Kanta did look good when he came on.
I'm not sure what will happen in the front third, perhaps just a better (or better adhered to) game plan will fix things. But with Champness back it puts pressure on those guys as someone is gonna have to be on the bench.
If McGree lights up training he could be a surprise packet somewhere - I admit I've never really seen the bloke so not sure if he's strictly a CM or could be an option at 10 or wing...

Defo moss and kanta back in...think the gaffer needs to remind hoff that he is a right sided player and has defensive duties.
Think dimi needs a spell...to many touches and getting caught with the ball.
Vujica not as effective going forward currently as earlier in the season.

The slide into oblivion continues.
Boogaard to give away at least 14 free kicks in shooting range McCormack to score from all of them.
15-0
Kamau with a deflected sealer.

Vujica is affected by Pato. Looked better once Champness got there.
I'd also rest Hoff. Move patito out there and bring Champness back in considering the inclusions macca mister. I agree with them and the reasons.

Bart is out for city. Big loss for them. Prob sign John Terry as an injury replacement for one game.
Can't see Dimi being rested. He'll stay at 10 with champs and Potato out wide. Nabs up front. Hoffo to bench. Kanta to start. Win and we look good for 2nd. Draw is almost as good. Lose and we start aiming for top 4.

Loss this one. we have been sliding backwards for a few games now. Unless Merrick gets Pato and Dimi to stop their team mate confusing wanderings we will again have little structure. Moss in, Kanta in Champness in. Duncan, Hoff and Brown to the bench. Sorry for Brown, he's been improving with game time but Kanta 2.0 is the better option (until hurt again)
We play our best football playing with width with crazy George and Vujica joining in on the party. So long as Ernie can get the troops to go back to this we can get a result i reckon.
I do like your idea Jetmaster of throwing Pato into a creative role in the middle leaving Champers to hug the sideline and if i recall correctly in the lead up to Pato's signing and arrival Ernie mentioned that although Pato was predominantly a wide player he was not averse to giving him a run centrally. City are a bloody hard team to predict what you are going to get from them. Some weeks they play great football but other weeks it is like sitting through root canal therapy minus the local it can be that painful.
A good test for the players and coach to make a statement that the Nix game was just a hiccup and not part of a trend. I still have not seen a better team than us this season at full throttle so sticking with a top 2 finish for mine.
I would also like to see Dimi have a break to recharge. Put Pato there a la Ronny and see how it goes.

Ernie's gonna have to come up with a better solution though especially when Ronny comes back into the fray.

ERnie mentioned on the news last night that Phoenix exposed a few issues that hadn't been done before but fortunately they're easy enough to fix. If it's just "all talk" then I like what is being said.
I'd be starting Champness and putting Hoff on the bench and play Champness - Dimi - Rodgod but it wouldn't surprise me to see the same as the other night or Champness - Dimi - Hoff
Thing is, of the wingers Hoff appears the hardest worker in defence. Can we compensate that loss for attacking flair?
FWIW Rodgod (credit to my brother for that name) was fouled 9 times in the previous match. Now, the data I managed to find on older games isn't 100% reliable but only Griff in a game v Perth season 3, Rd16 (10) and Coveny in CCM Semi final home leg season 1 (9) have received the same or more fouls in a match. My hunch - it's the most times a Jets player has been awarded a free-kick after being fouled in a single match.

I was guessing around 15 times to friends that weren't at the game :rof: I think there was another two or three that weren't called too.
It might be worth seeing if Pato and Danny boy work together a bit better than with Ivan (I suspect they might), and it would be good for Ivan to go back to familiar territory with Joey in front of him.
Just goes to show how nuanced and hard to achieve good teamwork can be - you can potentially swap out a player for a better one but come out worse off due to their different interactions. This is what potentially concerns me with all the new players (although good players) to come into the team.

Pato is a left winger, much better than Champness IMO.
He's just not used to the way the team moves around him, which is understandable since he's been here 2 weeks only.
I'd give him as much game time as possible, yes he's trying to be flashy all the time, but so is Champness...

Pretty much my thoughts too. I've heard a few people complaining about Pato not passing it and turning it over trying stuff - but Champness was turning over a lot of ball and wasting opportunities in his recent games for us too. I think Pato and the team both still have some adjustment to do to get used to each other but the guy's good.
Another thought I had was that its possible that Merrick has actually been telling him to go out and be expressive and try stuff - we know Merrick cares almost as much about entertainment and putting a show on as he does winning, and when you've got a bloke like Pato who has skills that can wow the crowd, it wouldn't surprise me if he has been given a licence to do so.

Kurt Ams is the referee.
He last refereed the F3 Derby 3 weeks ago and the match against Sydney earlier in the season (the match in the rain)
Not disrespecting Nabs but if Roy were on the park since Pato's arrival we would be talking about Pato's few assists and goal. A couple of times someone of Roy's nous to sniff an opportunity would have put a couple away. I reckon a few more weeks and Pato owns this league, He already got blokes defending against him looking pub team quality the way he turns them inside out.

If the referees start looking after Pato like they did Del Piero and Broich he's going to be doing some serious damage to the opposition. But without the referees doing their job it's always going to be difficult for him - especially now players have pretty much given up trying to take the ball from him cleanly.

This. Goes back to my previous comments about Arzani and players like Golec hacking him down from the start of a match as if they’ve been instructed to. The refs can have an influence on what sort of league this becomes.

What will also help us is when Ronny and Roy are back

their game plan is going to be to isloate arzani v ivan all night. it 'should' take Ernie 2min to fix that up. at the moment hes keeping Joey up the park though so maybe they want ivan to turn and run in the space to make arzani track back?
May even be worth swapping Hoffman to the left to assist too. Nts needs to get closer as does the defending mids. Don't let Vujica get isolated. Only way city will score with Mcormack out.

what was the VAR checking though? ref had already blown the whistle before the ball had gone over the line i thought. so what could he check? and if he decided it wasn't a free kick, do all the players go back to the same position they were in when the whistle was blown? including duncan who was probably mid-flight at that time?

To be fair his save in the first half was class. His owning of the 6 yard box was poor. He learnt from his mistake in the end and cleared a corner well. Before that he was a liability. Plenty of improvement for a young keeper.

Other teams have worked out the best way to stop us is to bully, niggle and slow us down. Refs don't appear to have a problem with it. And to then catch out our slow defence with a quick counter when we turn it over (which is happening far too much lately).
If we can adjust this to get on the front foot quicker we will be ok.
Has to start with standing up to Victory who will get Valleri and Williams to open up the butcher shop again.

Their problem will be, however, that Dimi will be back and I suspect Roy will return. With Riley showing what he can do it will be hard to butcher all 4. Not to mention the pace and guile of nabbout. Add to that Vargas and all of a sudden you have 6 blokes that you can't "man mark".

Fill in the gaps.
Got no doubt he would be of great impact but like i reckon , they did not bring him halfway around the world take up a visa spot and on good coin just to ride the pine 60 min out of 90 min every weekend.
With a full and fit squad i can see Nabbout on the bench. Tis just one of those rare situations for our club where we will be spoilt for choice ie 2 players 1 spot. How many times do you look at other teams squads and say to yourself any other team that player is a starter and one of the first picked.
Nabbout i am tipping will be a victim of versatility and will be the one on the bench not too dissimilar to the role he found himself in at Victory.

Jack Duncan has proven that he's a quality keeper - but in his last two starts he's been way off the standard he's offered us in the past - before the injury he was brilliant. He's either gun shy from his injury still or the pressure of actually having to compete for his position with Moss has him rattled.

We must be giving the salary cap limit a fair nudge at the moment. To sign Pato when we already have both overseas Marque spots filled some accounting magic is going to need to happen. I'm thinking either Dimi or DG has to be made Aus Marquee and what we save there plus the player we move on's part of the cap will then be allocated to Pato ? Hopefully that's enough to keep him here plus an opportunity to play in ACL which I think's a very real possibility.
Just need to keep the CSL and Oil funded clubs away from him.
Next season will be hard for us because a lot of our players are going to want more money / contract upgrades - and based on their performances so far it's going to be tough to deny them.
I didn't think the Aussie marquee position was still in effect just two marquees wage players ( outside cap ) a club regardless of there country of origin.
I was thinking if they are to try and keep both Pato and Vargas it would have to be a 2 year deal for one of them and backload the second season ie $ 650K the first year inside cap and
$1.35m the second year outside the cap as a marquee. Backloading can be tricky though as i am pretty sure thats what lead to the start of Oar looking for another home and departing Brisbane. The first season he played for a modest sum and was promised a handsome deal from the second year but from memory it was going to mess with there plans regarding Holman.
I am just guessing here and happy to be corrected if i have it incorrect eh.

Yes. You are correct only two Marquee players and can be Australian or foreign. Guest player can be an option to but only for 14 games and at the discretion of FFA [which means major city clubs with predominately blue kits.
Back to the cap system though - The following would be good options for the jets as well:
Salary Cap Banking – A Club can access any under-spend from the previous two Seasons to be utilised in the current Season, up to a maximum of 105% of the Salary Cap for that Season - Which should be a fair bit of money in the Jets case; and
Relocation Expenses – Clubs can reimburse Players for bona fide relocation expenses (eg. airfares, temporary accommodation, storage) outside the Salary Cap up to prescribed amounts in order to assist a Player relocating to a new region for football employment.

this was covered in an article a few weeks back. basically, they are that confident of their fitness and conditioning that they are able to pay their first 11 more than other teams. so if they aren't paying much for the other 12, they probably would have some cap space left.
