TALKING POINTS:

General

Newcastle have conceded 7 goals in their last 2 fixtures to Wellington, scoring 0.
The Jets are undefeated at QBE Stadium (North Harbour Stadium), former home of the NZ Knights. Joel Griffiths was the last Jets player to score at that ground.
A win will secure the Jets a spot in the top 4 this season, while leaving them 2 points from securing second.
The Jets are undefeated in their last 4 away games. Their record is 6 away matches undefeated.

Key Stats from Previous Round

The Jets will be forced into a minimum of 3 changes from the previous round against Sydney.
It was just the second time the Jets have won with 10 players while not previously winning at the time.
It was the Jets first win over Sydney since 22/12/12
Andrew Nabbout became the 3rd Jets player to score 10 or more goals in a season, following Joel Griffiths and Adam Taggart.

Players

Roy O'Donovan was the first player in 27 matches to be sent off for the Jets. The last was Jason Hoffman against the Roar in Rd 21 last season.
Roy's red was also the 3rd fastest in Jets history. The fastest was Jacob Pepper, who was dismissed 6 minutes after coming off the bench. The quickest dismissal from a starting player was Jobe Wheelhouse, who was dismissed after 8 minutes.
O'Donovan is the 25th different Jets player to be sent off in the A-League.

Newcastle Jets

Milos Trifunovic was the last Jets player to score in New Zealand.

Wellington Phoenix

Wellington have opened the scoring in 5 of the last 6 meetings between the clubs.

Agree. The depth will again be tested over the next 2 or 3 weeks. I unfortunately think he will miss the City game too. Fortunately Roy will be back then.

5 points form 15 will 100% secure it, less any points lost by City/Victory.

"Something" is breathing a sigh of relief, because Dan Mullen will be doing well to score, seated on the sidelines. He's out for the season.

I did read from someone that he played in a very strong jets youth team recently against NPL opposition and did not seem at all like the player seen turning out for the seniors in the first half of the season.

Ivan Vujica has been omitted from the squad for this week.

Interesting....

More likely Merrick is worried about the sharp end and has decided to leave a pure defender at home and cover with utility types. Pato and Vargas are not likely to be fully fit, Champness is a fill in, no Nabbout etc.

My biggest fear is the Nix drag us down to their level and we start playing too many long balls rather than simply destroying them the way we did Sydney last week.
We should win, but the Nix do seem to have the type of game which can bring us unstuck at times as well.
Boogs, Roy, and Nabbout missing / gone will be a massive test for the squad as well - Vargas and Rodriguez returning is a plus but big question mark over their fitness and lack of game time.

A place where we notoriously suck, no matter how bad the Nix are so more than happy with the 3 points and yet another clean sheet. We looked fine with the ball, but not sure what the high defensive line was all about, especially when it was getting exposed over and over and over.

Meaning if Sydney win the Premiers Plate and someone other than Sydney (or us) win the GF we will only get the .5 spot?
