I am very happy for Mr Lee.

So who should our three visa players be? Are Vargas and Potato really that good? I'd rather ditch one of them and have the Irishman and Georgievski.

Will Mr Lee be able to get a decent Chinese player for once? (Probably not, as they're too well paid.) Do we need a +1 AFC player anyway?

Will the AFC reassess its criteria and remove the A-League's two automatic qualifying spots? Do we now have only a playoff spot?

No, if Victory win, they are 12 points behind with four games left. Our goal difference is +20 compared with theirs. They'd need to win every game with an average winning margin of five goals. (Assuming we don't get pounded.)

No change till 2019/20.

And lets see what our squad is before working out the ACL squad.

You get ahead of yourself Gary.

can somebody actually point me to the criteria? i thought it was one to the premier and one to the champion. if the premier is also the champion, then the other grand final team gets the second position.

I thought the league winners are automatic and the Gf winners are automatic ACL qualifiers.
If league winners also win gf then 2nd placed team in league goes though to acl.

This is from the relevant document (the AFC's Entry Manual (http://www.the-afc.com/afc/documents/PdfFiles/entry-manual-afc-club-competitions-2017-2020-33728) for the champions league).

12.Sporting Criteria

12.1. To meet the sporting criteria, a club must have earned one (1) of the following
(which shall be utilised in descending order for seeding purposes for any draw):

12.1.1. winner of the national top division league;
12.1.2. winner of the national knock-out cup;
12.1.3. runner-up of the national top division league;
121.4. third-place of the national top division league.

12.2. Where an MA has more than one (1) national knock-out cup, it shall inform the AFC
and its clubs of the 'national knock-out cup' for the purposes of Article 12.1.

So I think the A-League informed the AFC that our 'national knock-out cup' is in fact the finals series (not the FFA Cup). Which means I may have started this thread prematurely.

Sorry.

From media I read today it was stated that the only way we don't get an ACL spot is if we lose the home final, and the team that beats us wins the GF.

From that, I'm assuming people are saying Sydney gain a spot based on them being Premiers (not a sure thing after the weekends loss), and then it will be the highest placed team from the season who ISN'T Sydney. Ie, whoever finished 2nd if they finish 1st.

This whole thing is way too confusing

My understanding is whoever finishes the season in 1st place gets and automatic ACL spot.

The 2nd Automatic ACL is for the winner of the Grand final. If the team who wins the GF is the same team who finished 1st in the league it goes to the runner up in the GF.

The play off spot goes to the highest finishing team on the ladder who hasn't already qualified for the ACL. So if 2nd place makes the GF then the play off spot goes to 3rd place, if 2nd fails to make the GF then they would get the play off spot as a consolation.

My expertise are limited to long walks and the study of precious rings so I could still be wrong on this whole thing.

Frodo I honestly only skim read your post but I think it is this:

Premiers = 1 spot
Champions = 1 spot
If premiers=champions = 2nd place gets 1 spot
There is a remaining 0.5 spot for the next highest on the ladder.

So if we confirm 2nd place, we are guarenteed at least the 0.5 spot

And we can then revel in more schadenfreude when sh!tney and the Tards stuff yet another ACL campaign.

Have to win two games to get to the group stage.

One against a south East Asian side, then we’ll have to play one of 2 Japanese sides, a Chinese or a Korean side, then we get to the group stage.

Maybe it's because I've had a day or so to reflect on the GF and I'm a couple of coffees in - but this could be a good thing for us. With the guaranteed ACL spot gone to the Tards and us now having to play qualifiers it might encourage Martin Lee to splash the cash on a quality big name player or two to improve our chances to getting there.

At the very least he'll make sure our shirt numbers stay on.

Well we only got Vargas and Pato to possibly resign, two spots left. I'm pretty happy to keep Vargas honestly, performed up to the quality of those first couple rounds in the semi and grand final, if he's happy to stay I'm now more then happy to keep him. Pato turned it around for me near the end, was consistently quality but I'd be looking at replacing him with a player who is much more of a nabbout esque starting player then anything else

I think this as well. Need some competition for him. Also resign both Pato and Ronny. A full offseason for Visa players is so underrated in this league. Watch Pato turn it on if we keep him. We already have seen Vargas' quality.

I thought we played the 4th placed Japanese team?

Not quite, Japan gets two automatic spots (first in the league and Cup winner) and 2 playoff spots based on league position.

Kashima Antlers finished the season in 3rd (playoff position) but had they won the Emperors Cup the last playoff spot (and our opponent) would have went to the 4th placed team Consodale Sapporo instead (as Kashima would have have got an automatic group spot for winning the cup), however as they were knocked out of this they instead have to qualify via a playoff against us or the Singaporean/Indonesian team.

As either Urawa or Vegalta Sendai will get the automatic group spot for winning the cup and neither finished in the top 3 of the league the 4th placed team misses out all together.

I am in the process of putting together some travel packages for the group stage should we make it. Trying to gauge interest. If anyone is interested please message me with your contact details & advise which games you would be interested in. Currently it will most likely be;
12th March: shandong, china
24th April: Gyeongnan, South Korea
8th May: Johor Darul, Malaysia

If I get some interest, I am hoping to have further details and pricing in the next couple of weeks.

This is obviously dependant on playoff results and actually qualifying.

One of the prices we paid when Antonis scored that winner v Smurfs last season. Had Sydney won, we would have won the GF in Sydney as underdogs, we would have an ACL group spot and Melbun City would get the playoff spot. Even if we lost the GF we still had an ACL full spot.

3' 01" Riko starts a Maradona/Messi run form half way BUTTTT...naaahhhh
6' 12" Major :wtf: Omani ref related to Helen Keller ffs!
6' 49" Riko: doing the damage...
7' 08" Oops.. I got the last one wrong. He's...THE DANGER MAN! (Take note Griff)
7' 21" No no...hang on...he's Riko Neymar....
7' 39" Beware 'The Jakata Sandwich' move all Jets midfielders. (all good by 7'45" tho)
8' 12" Typical Coastie sCCuM in action.
8' 32" Keepers can do whatt ever the f*** they like in Oman it seems. Another WTF moment? Guess it's OK if he's offside though, yeah?
8' 40" Wtf is this bloke trying ot do? Play handball? Instant karma anyway lofl
8' 47" Commentators statement of the night :lulzturtle:
And who's fault is that, perchance???
8' 58" Was Agent Mitch Austin's miss this bad? Still haven't seen it.
9' 08" I can't work out whether this tackle is Rugby League, UFC or a combination of both!
9' 18" to 9' 25" Most interesting sequence of play in the highlights. 3 of the best! Well, the middle bloke missed his target.

10' 17" The RBB have infected the Indonesians!! Gave them a 2 minutes spacing from the looks of it.
10' 40" to 10' 55" Riko: The Indonesian Messi and Cernak can't hold a man out 1/2 his size. Even the coasties knew he was sh!t...
11' 09" Marko Šimić (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marko_%C5%A0imi%C4%87_(footballer,_born_1988)) - the REAL danger man. With a goal celebration like that, NTS and the whole backline will be shakin' in their boots!
11' 56" Zlatanesque!!!??
12' 36" Riko comes in for some more close attantion.
12' 48" Maybe this No.8 is the only bugger on the pitch that can actually play football...apart from Riko of course. :wink:
13' 15" "F*** YEAHHHH!!! WE'RE GOING TO NEWY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (Dunno about the sleeve look though. Ryan Grant might catch on if he sees this)
13' 21" Practicing for when the time comes to kiss the pitch Lord Griff called home.
13' 35"Allah Akbar! - let be that I get to touch the Lord himself in Newy (aka Griff)
14' 29" Commentator doing his best Rasta accent.

We'd be playing Home Utd of they could actually get shots on target. A bit like us...innit!

Going through a bit of old data around the Jets ACL and noticed 4 players appeared in each of our 7 ACL games from 2009 - Elrich, Thommo, Sash and KAz Patafta. Kaz was actually a substitute in every one of those games - he started none.

Having typed all that out above, there's sense of irony that we won this game 3-1.
Somewhere NE of Tokoyo, on the east coast of Honshu, there's some nutter of a Kashima Antlers
fan typing out the lutz's on the chances we fluffed whilst watching an extended highlights UToob clip
of our game with Persija...

Someone that high outjumped him :rof:
It was Simanjuntak with the corner/assist, wasn't it?
