What are people's thoughts on the game tonight?

WHo is starting in palce of Dimi? Is it Vargas or is that a red-herring by Ernie?

Vargas to start and last as long as he possibly can.

Front 4 of Pato Vargas Mcgree and Joey

Vargas to go as close to 60 as he can and then move Hoff forward.

Premiership is a real possibility right now and 3 points tonight is essential to stand any chance. You have to play your best players.

I think it will probably be a draw but this squad has a knack of turning games that we should lose/draw into wins even with players unavailable.

Jeterpool

Vargas was terrific on the ball when he came on last week. Yes, it was against tired legs but he just seems to have a wonderful ability to glide across the pitch and makes passing look effortless.

I didn't think he'd start but the more and more I hear the greater the likelihood.

I think Hoff will be the player to move further forward, unless Cowburn comes in to that role. Thurgate will replace Champness.

With the history of the club, Jets-of-old, I would have said we are dead-set locked in to get flogged..
Players out, a chance to put REAL pressure on Sydney (who appear to be close to sh!tting the bed)..
This team Ernie has nurtured, I don't know..
I would love to believe what leftrightout said up above..

I think he will risk Brown in the middle to give us more structure. I think his comments about Vargas were just talk in the papers. A heavy pitch would kill his legs pretty quickly. Bring him on in the 70th once the pace is taken out of the game.

So..
Duncan
Hoff - Topor - Jackson - George
Uga - Kanta
McGree - Brown - Pato
Champness

Vargas, Cowburn and Thurgate to come on. Koutroumbus to be the other one on the bench over Shabow.

Why would you only give Vargas 20 minutes? He played closer to 30 last week, you don’t want to reduce his game time, they should be increasing it.
If he is on the bench and we are travelling well he will get 30 minutes. If scores are level or we are behind he will come on at half time.

Personally, I still think he will start. Ernie has spoken about the potential to start Vargas and he just doesn’t seem like the kind of coach who plays mind games.

Ops:

I thought the weather that was heading down the coast was going to hit Adelaide today. Just checked the BOM and I am incorrect.

I can still see some sense in keeping Brown in from the start and introducing Ronnie after the sting has been taken out of the game. Happy if he starts over Brown tho, either way we don't lose.

Should have started Brown. We have no balance and Adelaide are easily blocking off the channels. Simple game plan from them working a treat.

That said, once someone breaks through that first line of defence we will do damage. Adelaide can't hold a lead so this could easily end 2-2.

Uga played so bad tonight that if Kanta wasn't in midfield we would have been even worse. Gotta stay in midfield.

Especially with all these goals. Haha. What a beast.

How much of that stemmed from having a gash CB pairing tonight?

We had no authority, no distribution, no control. Boogard provides a load of those qualities in spades. Hoffman was playing too close to Jackson all night and our midfield were non existant.

We need someone who can play next to topor. I’m sorry, but Jackson is not our answer and unfortunately the only one in the squad who comes close is kanta.

That or we need to sign an injury waiver player to cover cb.

Pato needs to be dropped and thank god Roy is back

Don’t think that was the problem.

No point fixing the defense if you screw up the midfield.

We need an injury replacement for Boogs definitely.

Or is Johnny K still playing for us? I remember him being about Cowburns level. Which is marginally better than Jackson.

It wasn't great butt i dont think we should read much into it given the unavailable players.

Two things that need to happen..
Roy... with no Nabbout we have missed him badly in the last two weeks
Jackson... can't start. We won't win the comp with him. Either kanta or sign someone. Spira was mentioned, how serious are we?

Absolutely- the Sydney game at home was defining in many ways.

Vargas and pato will be good for the run in their legs. Adelaide away is always a tough fixture.

Last night we had the equivalent of Sydney missing Bobo, ninkovic, buijs and Adrian.

Puts a lot of things in perspective

Around this time last year we were in finals contention then suddenly went to pieces for the final 6? games. We’re not going to collapse but it does concern me that both Nabbout & Boogaard are gone, both contributing a shitload all season. We’re also putting a lot of faith in a guy who hasn’t played for 20+ rounds, plus McGree who is still settling, Rodriguez who for me is still an unknown, Champness who has gone off the boil since the first half of the season and Roy, who has missed more games than he’s played. Merrick has a hell of a task trying to get the chemistry back that seems to change drastically week to week. Next week we have Dimi & Roy back but no Hoff so the team will look vastly different again.

I already think Merrick should win coach of the year, but if he can lift us back up considering all the shit we’ve had to deal with, we might need to build a statue.

So are people still calling for the pato, Ronny, Dimi and Roy front 4? Personally I think it will be way to slow with ball movement...sure they’ll string heaps together and it will look pretty at times but I hope Roy is on song because he’ll need to take every chance he might get.

For all of the hoffs failings he is a pest to defence when forward and at the moment we have able coverage at the wide defenders spot. We needed more product up from....I didn’t even hear elseys name once and regan is a red waiting to happen when someone like Vargas gets at him. Never mind the defensive issues last night...the front 4 turned it over to much, the midfield were puss and we thought were playing in red....move on to next week

from what I saw last night
Jackson can't be our CB going forward
Ugar and Kanta have lost some of that chemistry they had earlier in the season, not sure what's happened with that but they aren't working together the same way. Maybe put Mcgree in the midfield and see how that plays out
Mcgree isn't a winger, he's a good player but with a full strength team I'll be looking forward to him coming on more centrally
Champness is still a young player, a good young player but right now that's all he is. He's done well considering he was thrust into a major role very early on, but he's not a starting XI footballer and definitely not a striker. I know he's there through circumstance but still
We need hoff in an attacking role, and not at fullback. against tired legs he is exactly the type of **** you need to hassle the defence and pull some scrappy goals

going into the grand finals series, and assuming no replacements are signed for boogs, I'd be looking at something like:

Roy
Pato - Vargas - Dimi
Brown - Ugar
Vujica - Topor - Kanta - George
Duncan

Bench: Mcgree, Hoff, Champness, Cowburn, Moss

If Vujica isn't up to the task, a possible option would be to put George on the left, and put one of Johnny K or Cowburn out at right back, whichever one isn't used takes up the bench spot

Why would you put Hoff on the bench ? His form is as good or better than most in the league let alone our squad.

my thought for it is, later on in the game I would rather Hoff bothering the defence then say Pato.

Also, in a grand final there is always the chance of extra time, Pato wouldn't put in the hard yards where that to happen that Hoff would

Still seeing panic above...all will settle in the next few weeks. Kanta and Ugar havent played together much lately. Ugar had a rare shocker...that will he fine in a week or two.
Roy should now be one hitout away...Dimi should be back...Ronny and Pato will be ok with a couple of games.
Jackson....well he is it like it or not.
One thing Ernie wont do is make a raft of changes....when the finals roll up the only playet not available will be Nabbout.
Will we win it? No....due to lack of finals experience...that is all.

Maybe they've given up, accepted 2nd and do nothing silly and be injury free for finals.

A lotta my re-shuffling I would like to see happen primarily comes from Jackson not being a logically option. I know this was his first start in a long time, but he doesn't feel up to snuff, and even if Boogs is ready to go by finals I don't know if it's worth the risk

No panic from me.

Vargas was obviously under done fitness wise and didn't have a great impact. He's a better player than Brown, I just thought that Brown suited the game better this week and should have started.

Missing Nabbout and Roy was huge, we had no presence up top. Champness is still a good young player, just didn't have a great evening. Roy up top adds much more than just goals.

Uga had a bad game, he's still our best midfielder.

As for Jackson. He seems to be lacking awareness as he's still young. The main issue I see is the fact that he doesn't seem a good fit for Topor. Which is the fault of Topor as much as Jackson. I would love the club to find an injury replacement for Boogs before the finals if possible.

No, it counts just as a yellow. He remains on 3 yellows but needs to get to 8 before another week off.

Actually, by my count Georgievski is out next week due that being his 8th yellow card.

Just investigated and they're right. I had out a yellow card against him in Rd 20 that was actually against Wayne Brown.
