It has been 2973 days since the Jets last appeared in the finals.
The Jets finals record (W-D-L) is 5-1-5.
The 57 goals scored by the Jets this season surpassed the combined total of goals scored in the previous 2 seasons (56).
Key Stats from Previous Round
The Jets achieved a number of records in the win over the Mariners. Firstly, they achieved a clear sweep over the Mariners - the first either team has achieved this in the fixture.
The match set an A-League record for most aggregate goals (10).
It was also the first time an away team scored 7+ goals.
The Jets scored the most goals in a single season for regular season fixtures between two teams with 15.

Petratos is now equal 10th in the Jets overall A-League goal scoring list alongside Emile Heskey.
Lachlan Jackson became the 14th different Jets player to score this season - a new record for a single season.
He also became the 79th player to score in the A-League for the club. Both of his A-League goals have been scored in the final round of the season. His first was for the Roar against the Jets in season 2014/15.

Bruno Fornaroli has been on the scoresheet in his last 6 matches against the Jets. He has scored 9 goals during that time.
On average, this fixure produces 3 goals when played in Newcastle.

I think most of us remember the 3-0 as its fresh in the minds. The 2-1 loss is probably a better indication of how we might go. Absolutely dominated them that night.
Can't wait to see us do that again and cop a Muscat winner in the 90th.

Ok will make the call here - Ronny and Pato must NOT start.
This game could go to extra time and penalties. We need those guys at the end not the start.
Also I'll be buggered if I could name pen takers we have apart from Dimi and Roy.

Possibly.
I found it interesting that Roar, who didn't have a lot of mobility or height up front, struggled in the same way we did 3 weeks ago. They struggled to get it out as City's midfield suffocated them and Roar resulted to long balls which City picked up the second ball more often that not.
For me, we need to work on beating that initial press, have some heights and pace like we did against the Mariners.
Additionally, we need to shut down Brattan and Jamieson. It was intersting how their midfield suffered once Brattan was injured and tended to hold himself back.

YES!!!! I'm 100% with you.
I would have Pato take a pen, Hoff and Georgievski. But hopefully it doesn't go to that.

Will be a good game. Need to work on our defense but otherwise I think we have enough attack to get the job done.
Can't believe this is the 3rd time playing city this season in Newcastle. We didn't even play em in newy last season 😅 😅.

We had a lengthy debate on the podcast around the lineup for this match and not everyone agreed.
Who would you be starting? Would you bring Boogs back into the team? Does Vargas return? How would you use Pato?
Macca
26-04-2018, 11:00 AM
I feel like Boogs will start. Either he's right or he's not - and he will say he's right. Not much point having him on the bench if he's 50-50 anyway - rather him start and if he runs out of gas or whatever, he can be pulled off.
I would leave Vargas on the bench, but wouldn't be surprised if he did start. Dimi has performed best this season when he's had all the responsibility on his shoulders. Give it to him again in the biggest match for our club for a while now.
Pato I'm undecided. He has looked really good the last few weeks coming off the bench, and wouldn't have a problem with him coming on for 30 minutes at the end. However, he is undoubtedly a matchwinner on his day, and his recent performances may merit a start. Whether we get the same from him for a whole game is the risk. I think he probably deserves a start but is it worth changing the front third around that much after how they went last match?
Vujica shouldn't play a part in this match. Too much of a mismatch against Arzani. Our right winger will have a job to do tracking their left back who has been a big outlet for them when I've watched.

Poor old Ivan. Arzani would pobably beat him through the turnstile if he was given the chance. Speaking of the Arzani, I think they'll switch his side to go up against Johnny K to avoid Georgievski. And yes, Hoff has a massive job to do on Jamieson!
Personally, I think it will be won or lost in the midfield. If we can shut down Brattan and manage to beat their first press, we will go a long way to winning the game.
I expect they will have more of the ball, but that's not always beena bad thing for us this year

Their midfield was impressive last week. I think our defence and organisation needs to be solid and look to break through and/or past their midfield quickly when given the chance. I don't think we will create much (unless Pato and/or Vargas are on and involved) through slow buildup against this team.

Who needs a midfield?
Us v Sydney down there, Liverpool yesterday.
Press, move fast with a diagonal ball and break quickly. We won't win on football skills and passes completed and that has been the story of our season.
When us, Scum and Adelaide got in their faces the Smurfs looked pedestrian.

Just had a look at the ticketmaster website and when you choose the option to view seats (don't have to select anything) it shows you a map with available seats. Eastern stand doesn't have much left in it other than half a bay of away support (but upper bay hasn't opened it seems) and the western stand is close to fully sold as well. The corners still have a fair bit of availability.

* Evans was the referee in charge when City defeated the Jets 2-1 at MJS in ROund 9. This is the only Jets v City fixture he's officiated.
* Beath has awarded just 3 penalties in Jets matches he's officiated. One for the Jets (Nabbout v Sydney Rd 27 last year - which he missed), and two for the opposition. One of those was this season in the City clash which Ross McCormack converted.
* He's dismissed 3 Jets players during htis time - Mark Birighitti and Nigel Boogaard twice. He's never dismissed an opposition player.
* The ratio of Jets bookings to opposition bookings is roughtly 3:2.

Sure will but it looks like they have only opened the front half of bays 15-19. I can't believe the back half of all those bays would sell out totally before the front half so there are a LOT of seats still available in that stand. Would take a massive rush today to sell them.

because in the first half im not sure he found anyone with his passes off the dribble. which actually makes the dribble useless.
2nd half i counted 3 passes that found the man.
if 3 passes (ok lets say im being a prick and give him double the number). is 6 'effective' passes in 90 mins worthy of such praise?
again, yep he can dribble. but did you see Vidosic dribble tonight and set up that goal? Did you see Vargas dribble and find feet (despite his higher degree of difficulty being in the middle of the park). Did you see Dimi putting crosses on blokes heads, or hitting the post, or forcing a save?

Also, Boogaard was at fault for the first goal. he had the jump on Vidosic and slowed up before realising he was onside then had to leg it again. he was right in line with me and he def pulled up. by then he was a step behind and gave Vidosic the room to put in a good cross.
however.
apart from that (and yes im more than happy to give a bloke one mistake per game), i thought he was immense.
For all the diving crap that goes on, Fornorolli is a beast. bloke is so physical and was giving both our big blokes the business all night. every ball was a fight and Bruno fought like hell for all of it. but Boogaard and then Topor handled him as well as anyone has. it was a huge part of the win. and both of them should get a lot of praise.
hope he pulls up ok because he deserves to lead these blokes out next week.

Only thing I can think is that it wasn’t an obvious error. Evans saw it and didn’t think it was a foul, and it wasn’t obviously a bad decision?

Maybe that diving POS Arzani had his reputation catch up with him on that one. It actually looks as if Arzani takes a extra step before hitting the deck

Here I was thinking City would control more of the game, give Duncan a lot of work, and we’d have to dig in and score on the counter. But they had absolutely nothing- even their goal shouldn’t have counted because it was so ordinary. They had 2 shots on target all game. I’m guessing one was the goal, the other was the one that rolled straight to Moss from outside the box. We shut them down brilliantly and the boys definitely don’t look like the side who had a slump a month ago!

if theres contact, its a foul.
yet they didnt give it.
the Vargas elbow was perfect as it was too early to cop any real sanction. 80th minute and yeah that one cops a card of some colour.

yeah i heard this too and have no idea if it means anything.
again, he sits wide and usually gets 1 v 1 opportunities. in space, a good dribbler will beat the first man. Ive no doubt if you swap Arzani and Pato the 'evades' would be similar but the end result would be much more effective.

VAR decision looked to be a conversation between var and ref. Ref looked to explain why he didnt think it was a pen and stuck with his decision. Was suprised it wasnt given to be honest. Think the extra step and his diving past caught up to him. Not sure if the fact he was going away from goal also came into his thinking. Definite contact but goes to that subjective how much contact warrants a penalty.

Yep totally agree. He just kept taking them on and then stuffing up the important next pass and stuff the attack up. For all the good he did, he did so much crap as well and dissapeared when he changed wings in the second half. George did a good job on him. Just cant believe the hype they kept going with every time he touched the ball. He made a simple control that any player in the aleague should do and it was like he scored mcgrees goal.
