View Full Version : 2018/19 Squad
I know this is an impossible question to answer, but how much money do people reckon we have left in the salary cap?
Jair wouldn't be on big money given the leagues he played in and his bargaining position from last season.
O'Caravan, George, Hoffman, Dimi, Uga, Topor, Boogs would be on better coin than they could be on elsewhere but nothing too silly. Perth would be paying similar wages to us for 1st teamers.
Vargas is marquee, correct?
Kanta is outside the cap?
Jackson, Koutrombis, Cowburn, Champness, Vujica, Ridenton and Moss would be on smaller wages. Given their age.
The rest would be on scraps.
Looking at Perths Squad, they'd have 2 marquees (Juande and Spiranovic?) but still at least 14 other players who would be on decent coin. (Reddy, Neville, Grant, Davidson, Lowry, Djulbic, Harold, Keogh, Castro*, Franjic, Kilkenny, Santalab, Ferreira and Ikonimidis)
We have 8 guys on decent coin so surely we have a little but of money up our sleeve for our last visa spot?
O'Donodidivan would be on massive coin. In the jerkstream podcast before last season, Lawrie said he was a marquee player. In the Jerkstream podcast a month or two back, Lawrie said he wasn't.. not like Lawrie to backtrack on things he says.. Regardless, Roy is without a doubt on marquee wages - minimum 500k.
Boogs is on silly coin and we've all known it from the moment we signed him.
I'm not sure how much of Kanta's wage is outside of the cap - I haven't looked thru that loyalty player details enough to know if it's just a percentage of his wage or the whole thing.

Homegrown Players – A Club can spend up to a collective $200,000 on 4 Australian Players aged 23 or younger that have come through the Club’s youth system. Any payments to such Players above the $200,000 allowance are included in the Club’s Salary Cap;
Loyalty Players – A Club can spend up to a collective $200,000 across any number of Players that have given 5 or more consecutive seasons of service to the Club. A portion of a Loyalty Player’s contract value is excluded from the Salary Cap based on a progressive scale from 25% (5th continuous season) to 50% (10th continuous season onwards)

I saw this article https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/how-graham-arnold-mastered-the-aleague-salary-cap-at-sydney-fc-20180104-h0dm63.html
Managing the cap
However important, recruitment is still only half the task. Making so many quality players work within a rigid salary cap now of $2.928 million is another job altogether and experience has made Arnold an expert at this delicate balancing act.
Generally, A-League clubs have operated on a "rule of sevens": Seven players earning in the highest bracket ($200,000 or more), seven in the middle tier (between $100,000 and $150,00) and then seven players hovering just above the minimum salary ($61,287). At Sydney FC, Arnold appears to have bucked this trend, largely because of the club's physios and strength and conditioning department.

Maccarone was on $440k marquee wages so maybe Roy is on $450k himself.
Regan was on $180k a season 2 years ago so surely we only pay Boogs and Topor $250k at most (Which means we pay them $300k)
Jair, Dimi, Uga and George would be on $200k each.
Which means we would have about $1.1 million to pay the remaining 15 guys. Minimum wage is $55k so it's likely we have 7 guys on 100k and the last few guys on $55k each.
So not much left if those very factless assumptions are correct.

He signed a new contract in April this year. Surely he is on less money now than when Stubbins was throwing it around trying to attract anyone to come here. Considering when he resigned there was a few guys available who could replace him in that age bracket he would have signed whatever was put in front of him. He wouldn't have been picked up by too many other teams at his age.

Maybe but it wouldn't be on that much less. Had a good season last year and has a young family so doubt he would agree on a massive pay cut plus he is our captain

Lawrie saying Roy was our marquee was just to have his salary not counted in the cap - not necessarily on marquee money. Therefore in the 300k's.
Boogs was on 320k under stubbins, so you would think he re-signed for alot less.
Think they've thrown jair some money. Lawrie was saying instead of signing a first choice keeper we would sign a backup and use the money to thrown at a higher quality forward.

Look, if he can do a "Roy" and wants to put the gypos to the sword..

Austin was born in Rochdale, England (which is in Ireland i've been told) and got tricked into living in a caravan by those sneaky Gypos, he is practically O'Donovan incarnate. His hat trick against them this year will wipe away all that filthy Centrelink stench from him and he will win us all the trophies.
Seriously tho, hopefully he is being signed on ability rather than availability. Time will tell Mr Merrick..

If Roy was on anything less than 500k a season he needs to find a new manager. Especially when you look at where the club was when we signed him - Roy and his manager would have been able to name their price and the Jets would have had few if any options not to pay it.
Now that things have turned around, the club most definitely can seek better deals.

i hear what people are saying about our stocks in the DM position. but after Ridenton, who we dont know too much about we have no one. Cowburn and Johnny K are slow, not up to the required quality.
i really think we are short of a foreign old head, especially if we can qualify for ACL!!! Someone with the skill and composure to be able to control the tempo of the game and allow Uga to fulfill the box to box midfielder role.
I am not at all sold on the Austin and Sheppard captures, i was expecting a somewhat more adventurous approach to signing this off season given the financial benefits Lee can obtain from ACL Qualification.
a lot really depends on whether Jair can be the same quality if not better than Vargas, uncertain given his last year in China wasnt of much note!

and as expected Pato gone.
Great player but no defensive presence at all. Puts a lot of pressure on the fullback playing behind him.
Went to a function recently where Ernie spoke about the upcoming season. Was interesting when he spoke about Pato. He was never in the hunt for resigning. Terms like 'barely a footballer' 'all the skills but zero desire' 'no interest in working as part of a team or didn't care about winning ot losing' were all said. Ernie also said that he never wanted to bring Pato on in the gf but injuries and the shite officials curtailed his plans

It has never sat well with me when ex players crap on a previous club publicly and i see no good or productive reason why i coach should do the same about a past player/players. If Ernie did make such comments then perhaps the things we now hear from retired Victory players that Ernie does have a unnecessary nasty side.
IMO trash talk like that is just that and needless.

I went to Adelaide with the team last season and it was abundantly clear pato had very little desire to be there (by there I mean part of the team). He seemed to act very petulant around the team, even to those who spoke his language. I was told by one of the backroom staff that most of the team had made a concerted effort to include him but he basically shuned them. It certainly seemed like he had no intention of sticking around in newy.

Not allowed to be honest?
If someone is shit, say they're shit.
If they're a prick, say they're a prick.
Being honest isn't a crime.
Honesty isn't a crime for sure. neither is being a dick and burning bridges something smart people don't do in particular whilst still earning a living from within there chosen field.

**Brought this over from another thread**
Regarding our rubbish set up of late. We don't have passing links through the middle, we don't have any pace out wide, we don't have a target man up top, we don't have a poacher sitting on the CBs shoulder. I have no idea what Ernie is trying to achieve with his set up at the moment. We don't press, we don't hit them on the counter, we don't cross early, we don't try to take people on (bar Vargas.) Our system is basically, put the most talented players we have on the pitch and hope that they will get the job done. No balance, no plan on how to win the league, let alone games or even halves of football.
I think we need to move to a 3-5-2. We have too many defenders and CMs. Lets set ourselves up to always have numbers behind the ball and have 2-3 players in attack who have the freedom to move about and not be burdened with instant defence. We just don't have enough 1st team players who can attack at this level to play with 3 up top, or 1 up top and 3 in behind. The midfield can be changed to a 3-4-3 to accomodate Roy coming back, or another attacker if we want to go for the win/chase the game.

Also, yes this idea came about after watching the Arsenal's 3-4-3 formation this morning. It was great to see us look so comfortable in defence (numbers wise) with very little effort to sprint back. We just seemed to have numbers at all times. But also had enough talent in the front 3 to cause them damage.

Hoff is being criticised for missing chances but where is the praise for actually getting himself into scoring positions ?
I'd be dropping Crazy George long before Hoffman - who has probably been one of our better players so far this season.

Hoffman has been a lot better since moving back to his best position out wide. He isn't a back to goal striker type
Doesn't matter one bit how many times he gets himself in scoring positions, at the end of the day it is his conversion rate that matters. Like i use to say to Stanny it took Hoff upward of 6-7 years to have a above average season in the HAL and low behold it also took a shift away from his usual position to achieve that.
He would be better off not getting into scoring positions he would have an excuse for not converting. Hoff was a average RB and handy utility plug a hole type player like last season but that is all. What other club in this league would see Hoff lead the line for almost a third of the regular season.
Hoff is one of those types who could have easily at the end of any given season ( except for last season ) faded back in to NPL and no one would have given it a second thought.

I get it i do but in a professional league where results count toward membership and sponsorship you need players with both those qualities. Squads are filled with nice blokes but it is the ones who have give 100% and have technical ability that win you things or at least keep you in the hunt.

Well our technical blokes are either injured suspended or not giving 100%. So what so you propose?

That is exactly right hence why he gets a look in week after week because he is a fringe player who has found himself in a squad with the very circumstances you just mentioned above . In a team with a full healthy squad he is on a bench at best or in the stands with the rest of us on game day.

Hoffman has played in 175 A-League games
He's scored 9 goals from 13 games for the Olyroos.
He's scored 4 goals from 11 games for the Young Socceroos
That's a quality professional footballer and to call him otherwise is deluded.

I think Hoffman has done well. Not great, but not terrible.
He doesn’t deserve to be dropped to the bench. He’s been put in a position I don’t think he wants to be in and something he isn’t overly suited to through no doing of his own. He’s simply doing what’s asked of him.
I think Hoffman has offered more to us in a position he’s not familiar with at this level than George has offered this season.
I’d much rather see George dropped to the bench before Hoffman.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Dimi in a false 9. With Hoffman/Jair/Thurgate/Austin supporting.
Let Vargas run the midfield with Kanta and Ugar the anchors.

went to the Victory v WSW game on saturday night, one thing that stood out.
whenever Honda drifted into space (wide right) the second the ball was played to him, a CM and his right back rushed to him and they played triangles until Honda had the ball with no pressure. WSW couldnt over commit because it would open up Barbarouses, or someone rushing through top of the box.
By the extra players coming to him for the easy ball, Honda had so much more extra time, and was never double teamed. Once he was 1 on 1 with a WSW player he could pick and choose as he pleased with his passes (or runs).
contrast that to sunday and whenever the ball was switched to Dimi no one came near him, and if his fullback made a run it was usually to overlap him.
this always left Dimi with limited options, and it 'seemed' like the idea of getting him the ball was to put him in space and let him create something.
problem was a lot of the time he was on the ball he was quickly double teamed, leaving him no real options.
it certainly looked like the game plan to hope Dimi got in lots of 1 v 1 situations in space. but it didnt work.

What does our current squad list look like?
How much theoretical room do we have?
Obviously it's January and there's a lot of chatter about the transfer window.

Another agreeing with the Member. Ridenton was fine the other night.
I'm not usually into the whole "waste of a visa" debate but Ridenton is very clearly a waste of a visa spot.
But he did show more promise than normal on Wednesday. He even had a shot! A visa player having a shot, imagine that
Ridenton's main problem IMO is he has horrendous awareness and gets caught out by rushing opposition midfielders more than any player should - and doesn't have the physical presence to stop it like Kanta does. Let the dude run all day but don't give him the ball, particularly in our half.
If Ridenton was Australian and local he wouldn't cop too much grief though. Which we already have, in Cowburn.

well this is also my only problem with Ridenton.
We have a couple of Aussie Ridentons already there in Ugabooga and Cowburn.
We have Kanta who is priceless and the one true Prince.
We also have Johnny K who i always assumed preferred to play there.
it was always a weird position to waste a visa on imho.

Watch the replay of Brattans goal. Miller showed his punditry skills match his coaching credentials by suggesting Topor should have advanced. Not sure Topor could have done much more than try to be big and block. Ridenton as a 6 should have been all over Brattan but he was coasting about 3m away from him. Numerous examples of a lazy track or a really very average touch for a A League player so far this year. He surely must go if he takes a Visa spot. Kilkenny (amazingly), looks like Iniesta compared to Ridenton and his work rate is way ahead for a guy 10 years senior. He isnt great but certainly a pro. Loads of better options around than Ridenton. The only other with a question mark is Johnny. Why we left him on for the entire game v Roar when the poor kid is recovering from a major illness and hadnt kicked a ball in 7 months astounds me. He was nowhere near both goals, one to prevent the cross and the other to clean up back stick in the final minutes. He needs a decent stint in the Youth team to regain fitness and confidence. Jackson comes in certainly.

I would grow a friggin Sideburn than see Ridenton play so not fussed. Need a result v Victory. Maybe just maybe no Vargas help Petratros? He and Ronny seem to get in each others way. Ronny class and Dimi everywhere but poor Dimi is all flame but no fire. As a 10 I think he might get the mojo back. Sheppard right. Jair left and ODonovan top.

Speaking of rubbish. What have we learnt from last nights games. Answer? This is not a great league and average players in the main can sneak under the radar. Unfortunately for Sydney, but to much hilarity for the rest of us, the radar was operational last night and their back 3 statues of Wilkinson, Zullo and Calver were found wanting whilst Redmayne was his usual calamitous best. The Jets need some luck and a run of 2 or 3 in a row and they sneak into the 6. For the first time in a long while, there is no clear cut favourite here. Perth top of the league? With players like Reddy, Lowry, Djulbic and Santalab? All journey men, all average. Kilkenny looks great but we know he isnt.
A mate of mine from the UK sends me messages when we laud La Foundre, Keough and O'Donovan here when all were frog marched out of The Championship. The A League is an honest league that we hope will improve with expansion but certainly not something to be daunted by if looking for some luck and upsets. The Jets are due some luck and upsets are ripe for the picking. Start with Victory.........

Perth will win the league this year.
They may not be filled with super stars, but they have enough quality and skilful youth who have been given the freedom by the manager to showcase their ability. Popa has implemented a system that works for the players he has available (much like Merrick did with us last year) and they're performing above their 'average' ability. The players believe in the system and clearly have a great chemistry. This is all you need to win games and trophies.

Same old story for The Jets. Owned the game and couldnt capitalise. I know it may appear that I am carrying an agenda but when they are paid to play I figure footballers are open to criticism. I will lighten the load and add a little anonymity. Whichever NZ international passed that ball back to Melb for Troisi to slot home a pearler should not play again. Ridenton played better than pretty much the entire Melbourne Victory squad on the day. The difference being that Victory capitalised on their opportunities and the Jets did not.
The passing and distribution from Ridenton was top notch. The only criticism of him is that he's lacking physically and can be pushed off the ball. But as far as passing ability and vision he's a bit of a hand full for the opposition.

wont Moss want 'starter money' if he stays?
its been reported Biraz wants out of City. If we are gonna pay #1 money is Biraz a better option, esp if he buggers off OS again we can get some cash.
I can dig Italiano as backup, or if we need to give Topor/Georgevski more cash then save a bit on goalie and put him as your #1.
Id also keep Roy, Topor and Georgevski. Cowburn seems to be liked by the boss and cant imagine we'd have to break the bank to keep him.
Id love Vargas to stay but cant see it happening. Did get many giggles out of his and Jairs complete lack of effort during the halftime kickaround on wednesday night.
you could just see how belittling Vargas thought it was being paraded out in front of the crowd with the rest of the squaddies.
Adelaide should chase him, hed fit well there.

Topor can have 1 more contract before he moves into the back room.
Cowburn will resign. Good enough to fill a few spots on little cash.
Jackson isn't good enough to start anywhere. Hopefully we can find a replacement and he can go to West Melbourne.
George is good enough to start for us but I think we are over paying him now.
Vargas. I like him and I don't think we have the ability to find anyone better. If we lose him I won't care.
Moss. Has got to be close to retiring. But we don't want to pay Birraz twice as much to be 5% better than Moss so keep him.
Roy. Can score, no one else can. Must be priority.
Jair. Meh, would be better in his 2nd year but i'm totally fine to lose him.
Kosta. No idea who he is, lol. Only got him to keep Dimi happy, will never play in the HAL regularly.
Austin. Will enjoy the trams in West Melbourne next year. Surely he won't be resigned, can't even get into our team when we have 3 attackers injured/suspended. Not even close to good enough.
Italiano. Resign, solid back up who could improve into a starter.
Adelson. Don't care. Is just there to fill a spot.
Langlois. If he's happy to train with a HAL team and not play for awhile, resign him.

But he is a liability in defence. If we want to be a top 4 team or go into the ACL and do well we need to be able to defend. You could maybe convince me that Boogs could be a back up. But I'd have to be in a good mood and with results this morning and signing news I am not.

Can't tell if you're trolling or if you're just all in for my Vedran transfer and eventual spoonathon with no queues, jet shaped hats and hilarity??

There are no trams in West Melbourne.
Nah they got the fancy ones that dont need overhead lines or tracks.
Things are the future man.

Lachy J signs on again.
We're showing our intent continuing to sign under whelming squaddies on extended contracts.
No finals for us for a couple more seasons with this continuing.

We don't have a plan. Now that Lee is struggling he's obviously just told them to not go bankrupt. We will just play the same team until someone chooses to leave.
I miss the good old Middleby days. This new bloke is absolute trash.

We already know this with all the resignings
Lets hope by next season they get properly introduced to each other then.

But had we said that this time last year with the majority of the squad we'd be saying it's a good move.

Yep, I'd at least like to try something different with a few of the visa spots. Just reporting what I have heard

I'm dumbfounded that we've resigned Jackson. There would be 30 young defenders in the various NPL comps better than him. Kaine Sheppard shows that there's quality to be found. Jackson has been in the A league system for years and still looks like bambi on ice.

2019/20
same squad, minus Vargas (pretty clear we won't be able to afford a marquee).
Dimi back to n.10 (plus motivation)
Play with Roy and Joey from round 1.
Jair will finally adapt to Australia, will become the new Castro.
Name on the trophy :D

The biggest problem is Boogs/Topor. Together they have too many mistakes (mainly boogs). Lachy is good, but he needs to start every week next to topor to really tell.
Every other aleague squad is getting better (except the scum of course). We're not.
I said it all last season, we were an average squad with some good players (who've left) that over performed.
We are where we should've been last season with the squad we have.
Lawrie said we have a budget that we need to keep to (probably just over the cap - maybe Jair).
