Finished 9-0. What I found odd was that Roy started. I’d like to think when the more serious pre-season games come around, Merrick starts whoever is going to be playing striker while Roy’s sitting in the stands.

Why was it odd??
We dont really have a striker at the moment to play anyway
The other thing is we will want to be getting minutes into Roy anyway
Get his fitness up so when he is back playing he can get through games
I be surprised if come November and he sitting games out we not playing somne behind closed doors games with the Gypos Yoof team and Roy is perfecting his kung fiu kicks on them

Well...looks like this was of zero interest. For what its worth, entertaining game, some good goals and apart from an early brainsnap by Noah both keepers had blinders. Roy and Hoff got our goals in a 2-2 draw.
We were sharp but not quite there. The kids that came on for the second half looked very good in patches.
Oh...and Bolt walked out to the bench to applause.

Thanks for the write up, mate..
Was wondering what went on out there!
Been stitched up enough watching these cunce play pre season games in the past to know it not really worth the effort or money to go watch
When there is a first grade semi on it reallly a no brainer
When you add that Griff was playing then it even a bigger no brainer

Best part was ground announcer saying penalties at full time and then reversing that call 60 seconds later after he got the chat from someone.

Looks like Sheppard didn't play. Italiano got a run in goals and Virgili 2.0 started.
Sounded like Sydney dominated and we got in behind on the counter a few times.

I read my report on Reddit, turns out it was from the Sydney FC website.
I just read the Jets version and they seem to say the exact opposite. Its a friendly so it doesn't matter too much. We still only have half an attack to play.
Sheppard didn't travel with the team. So i'm guessing he is back with his NPL side waiting for a phone call from Griff.

We are currently trialling Gerrie Sylaidos who is a diminutive winger from northcote city. Still only 19 and after asking on another forum I was told he has crazy skills and technical ability and was always the 'other' playmaker behind arzani in the city youth set up. Not sure why he isn't still with them.
The way I am reading the situation of shephard/ sylaidos/other trialists is it will come down to whether Merrick decides to sign a target man or a winger. I think Hoffman's form as a central striker this pre-season is key to this decision.

Actually this is what I was told about sylaidos:
Quality player, technically superb was always the 2nd standout attacker at City youth after Arzani. Takes players on with ease, good with both feet and has a lethal strike on him.
Still a teenager though wont be picked up by the Jets this time.

ive been doing some research on Kaine Sheppard, and beside his 2 goals in FFA Cup, he doesnt seem to have such a great record. im not believing all this, but more so would like to hear from anyone who has seen him in action to tell otherwise

Hasn't sheppard got 15 or so goals this season? He mainly floats around and plays off their more 'highly rated' striker Liam Boland.

he does have 20, equal with boland, but in past years he has been very quiet not traditionally a starter. more so asking why him and not boland, or any other star in vpl. i guess merrick sees value in him with his preferred system? just trying to if see if anyone follows the vpl and can shed any further light on his credentials

Not all NPL stars actually want to play AL.
Not all NPL stars actually want to play AL.
This . Some NPL clubs pay very good dollars to there top three or four then throw in if those players are on good coin in there employment. Between those two sources of income that can be well above and beyond what they would likely be offered by HAL to make the step up.
I know a player who went that route to A League and he knocked back clubs for a couple of years til it became financially viable for him to have that crack.
Did anyone go out to the game and able to give some details about how we played, etc..
I mean, obviously 5-0 is a good indication.. Just wondering who played well, who was out of their depth, who got a run, etc..

I was there. I am not the best at giving feedback on players. Still think we could have put a few more away. We weren't as entertaining in the last 20.
Good to see vargas out there playing. He got one of the goals too.

Yeah played the last 25. Took a bit to of time to get into the game, definitely playing catch up to the rest of the team in terms of fitness and sharpness. Was unlucky not to score due to a good save. The last ten or so minutes he got very involved which was good to see.
Sheppard looked very impressive. Very confident on the ball

Gardiner's reported on the match (https://www.theherald.com.au/story/5675687/a-league-jets-make-statement-with-rout-over-western-sydney-in-final-preseason-hit-out), with more detail than usual:
Dimi Petratos (seventh minute), Nigel Boogaard (16th), Ronny Vargas (19th) and new striker Kaine Sheppard (89th) hit the target as the Jets dominated throughout, much to the delight of a midday crowd of 1600.
The Jets made the most of the carpet-like surface and moved the ball with pace and power.
It was the same style of football that took them all the way to the grand final last season.
Petratos and Vargas were menacing, Matthew Ridenton and Nick Cowburn controlled the midfield and Boogaard and Nikolai Topor-Stanley won everything at the back.
New boys Jair, Mitch Austin and Kaine Sheppard played the final 25 minutes and looked sharp. Sheppard turned in an Austin cross to complete the scoring. The Brazilian unlucky not to score from a low cross which was well saved.
...
Wanderers, who meet Sydney FC in the FFA Cup semi-final next Saturday, were without captain Brendan Hamill and defensive partner Patrick Ziegler and it showed.
The first half was one-way traffic.
After an early scare, the Jets clicked into gear to open a 3-0 lead, and it could have been more.
The visitors should have went ahead in the sixth minute when Josh Sotirio collect a piercing through ball. But with Glen Moss stranded, the winger inexplicably pulled his shot past the left post.
A minute later, the Jets were in front.
Vargas danced into the box, got through a tackle near the byline and cleverly lifted a pass to Petratos at the back post.
The Socceroo did the rest, making good contact with a side-foot volley which took a deflection on the way in to the net.
The Jets made all the running in an entertaining opening 15 minutes highlighted by slick ball movement.
Cowburn, who replaced Ben Kantarovski (hamstring) in midfield, hit a shot from the edge of the box which whizzed past the left post.
Jason Hoffman then cut inside but his effort from 15 metres lacked enough venom to trouble keeper Dan Nizic.
There was little the shot-stopper could do in the 15th minute when Boogaard met a Vargas corner with a powerful header to double the advantage.
Four minutes later is was 3-0. From a turnover, Petratos released Roy O’Donovan on the right. The Irishman had a ton of time to find Vargas, who slid a shot into the net.
Sotirio caused a few problems with his pace in behind, but Glen Moss, bar rushing off the line to haul in through ball, didn’t have a great deal to do.
The second half was more of the same. Hoffman had a shot from point-blank range blocked by Nizic and Cowburn hit the cross bar.
Jets: Glen Moss; Johnny Koutroumbis, Nigel Boogaard, Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Daniel Georgievski; Matthew Ridenton, Nick Cowburn; Ronny Vargas; Dimi Petratos, Roy O’Donovan, Jason Hoffman
Wanderers: Dan Nizic; Josh Risdon, Tate Russell, Tass Mourdoukoutas, Raul Llorente; Keanu Baccus, Jordan O’Doherty; Alex Baumjohann; Jaushua Sotirio, Oriol Riera, Roly Bonevacia
