Happy New Years Premier Leaguers! Another huge year, NPL licence renewals, possible changes to the competition, new players coming to the comp and plenty of movement during the offseason.

Some big changes. Realistically, how many teams will there be in the new NPL? I hear that they need 1 Division of 14 or NPL1 and NPL2 (preferred) of 8 each to be even be deemed viable with the FFA as a State assoc. Same thing in Tas ACT and WA. Heaps of work to do, and some ordinary facilities all competiting for grants and development in a small market and small but growing economy. Mergers mergers mergers or old enemies and new friends getting into bed together? Let the rumours begin.

Why is this such an issue??

There is already 11 in NBN so bringing in 3 more from New FM should.not be that big of a problem

What to me is more of a problem is getting some solid pro rel structure from.Zone Leagues to NPL and not the wishy washy BS we currently have in effect

would love to see instead of every club fighting for small bits of the pie, the FFA and NNSW go in and build one central venue for NPL1 teams in Newcastle. Build it at National Park complex, let Magic, Jaffas, Olympic, Jets, Adamstown play there, and if the likes of Cooks Hill/New Lambton etc make it to the top grade they have a ready made 'compliant' venue.
Play W-League games there, even Jets trials and FFA cup games. It would certainly have a better business case than No#2 getting all that funding to support 1(?) rugby team yeah?

One ground for everyone to use? I haven't a more ridiculous statement since the FFA said let's put Graham Arnold in charge of the socceroos.

The problem is that the 11 that are there now have little by way of balance sheet power and true corporate influence. Magic Park is the pick of the facilities locally and compare that to NPL 2 standard venues in Sydney or Melbourne and NNSW Football has a viability issue on its hands in the eyes of tye FFA and other states. There are already whispers about some clubs aligning to pool resources to build better facilities which has turned into merger discussions and some strange bedfellows suggested. I thought this forum may have heard the same whispers. You cant have an NPL of FFA Cup / National 2nd tier standard with what local NPL clubs bring to the table today. Clubs need to represent a broad cross section of society, in strong demographic locations and show a sustainable model off 10 yr business plans as a minimum. Then they need a ground or plans for a ground that is capable of hosting semi professional teams. Not many could survive if certain benefactors walked away currently and Lake, Hunter and Newcastle Councils have limited scope to match limited budgets for one sport whilst State and Fed coffers spread thin in this guaranteed labour heartland. Shake ups expected to the current comp.

Taking games away from club grounds will be the death of these clubs. They depend too much on this revenue and ground advertising.

My thought was that whoever was the home team each match would earn revenue from gate/food/advertising.

The numerous clubs would pay rent on the facility but with it being 5 or 6 clubs the 'rent' would be divided appropriately. That way clubs dont all need to fund ground rent/lighting/groundskeeping individually just to try and make a dollar once a fortnight.

I can think of a thousand minor reasons why it couldn't work, but I'd bet pretty much all of them could be overcome with the right people behind it.
Look its no revolutionary idea, the AFL uses it. Would just be interesting to see if clubs were willing to think outside the box, rather than just continually all have 'borderline' acceptable facilities and fight each other to get ahead.

Our competition needs promotion and relegation so NNSW should be doing all we can to get at least 5 clubs upto scratch so we can make 2 comps. This is the only thing that will make the competition better. Having a 14 or even an 11 team comp with the same 3 or so weak teams in it each year will do no one any good.

NNSW will not make the big call and dispose of the year in year out poor performing clubs, once they do the comp would be far more attractive and even.

It’s a shame though. Would be a great occasion for many of the 18/20s players and I dare say first graders. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t have the same atmosphere or support.

What an awful decision to give a penalty like that. I would be very embarrassed to be Ryan Gallager. You couldn't see it on the Bar Tv coverage though the ball might have already out of play before the collision occurred. It looked like an accidental collision anyway.

Yes Olympic were lucky to win beacause their keeper kept them in the game with multiple saves then a clumsy off the ball challenge by Sneddon was a 100% penalty because you cannot league tackle any player wether the ball is in or out

I think you would find NNSWFA would put out the draw and then ask clubs to submit any changes they would like, times days etc
ALeague draw has been set in stone since at least September/October, so when they get the draft clubs check the draw, i'm sure they wouldn't be to worried about when the jets play at that stage.
What gets me is, why Northern would not check with the Jets draw as they are organizing it in say December, January....its not that hard....or don't they give two f.^*ks about the jets and its supporters, who generally are the same who support the NPL..

Outsider, in your opinion:
In reference to a challenge whereby the defender makes a play at the ball in the box but gets the player and is last man. Let’s say it’s one of those fouls that inside the area results in a yellow and penalty, but outside the box as a last man, it’s a red because theres no penalty benefit.
If the referee plays advantage, and the shot is missed. Is there scope to change the yellow to a red as there was no penalty benefit.

I’m mainly referring to the interpretation that ball playing attempts that are fouls that were once red and penalty, are now yellow and penalty. As the red and penalty was a double whammy. Assuming it wasn’t a red card dangerous tackle.

Edit: not referencing any incident. Just generally speaking.

Grab yourself a Law Book and read page 89 for an explanation
If the referee plays advantage for a DOGSO and a goal is scored it is a YC but technically if no goal results the Law said it should be a RC.This is NEVER applied and is not seen as "fair"as applying the advantage effectively means that a goal scoring opportunity remains;consequently a YC is the fairest sanction whether or not a goal is scored.
Here endeth the lesson

I wouldn't say their squad is old. They have a good balance I think. only a couple of high-quality players over 30 ( Mcbreen, Evens, Rose I think). The rest of the squad is in their prime or young.

I think the youngsters there would benefit greatly from training with and modeling themselves on the players mentioned above more than playing regular first team football. If they are good enough they'll get a go at Edgeworth this fact has been proven there.

He's apparently been issued a long suspension as well.

The context I have heard is that the blues player (one white boy to another) told the jaffas lad to go back where he came.

This happened with 10minutes to go in the half. The linesman heard it, waited till half time and told the ref who then issued a straight red.

Seems a huge over-reaction.

Anyone else aware of the controversy in the U/18's CCB v Jaffas game? CCB player red carded at half time for a racial slur?

man, i heard an under 13's NPL kid scream at a ref "are you ****ing kidding" the other day.
ref (looked about 18) let him go, not even a word.

screw that. card them, card them all. little wankers need to pull their heads in, so do the coaches, so do the parents.
its a joke people just assume thats the way you behave on a field.

100% agree that players and coaches get away with way too much that is targetted towards referees. Immediate penalties should be quicker and harsher.

This past weekend at Speers Pt an under 9's coach was criticizing a game leaders calls to the extent where the bloke stopped the game and told the coach to take the whistle or he could get off the field. Said coach continued his verbals to the extent the young Northern rep had to step in and ask both sides to calm down. Northern bloke should have immediately told old mate to leave the field.

However, red card at half time and a 6 week suspension for the above mentioned call to another player........ seems completely OTT.

Be interesting to see the true version of events.
Not saying yours are not correct, just you mention that is the context you heard.
I think as soon as you tell somebody to “go back to where you come from” (I imagine it would’ve been a bit more expletive ridden.) you’re on some pretty slippery ice, unless your telling him to to not mark you so closely.
I agree, there are worse things, but it definitely has racial undertones in how I imagine the conversation would have gone.
No issue with red card in this circumstance. 6 week suspension for a 18year old seems a bit much, maybe miss a week, give him 12 weeks next time he does it.

Always 2 sides to the story and from your account seems a little harsh but vilification in any form should not be tolerated and strong message been sent out on this one by Northern which I consider a very good thing. Hopefully the kid will learn his lesson and be a better person out of it.

Ladder to hard to predict I believe very tight competition. Been good: Have to say Weston most pundits predicted them to finish bottom 4. I had some mail at start of season that Kew and the guy he was working with in putting team together were very good interviewed players made sure they were the right fit etc. Disappointment: Lambton in particular over past month. Premiers: I’m going to punt on Edgy to make it 5 in a row, Zane is best coach in comp and will guide them to the title.

Edgy and Magic to just have a little too much quality for everyone else

Jaffas to start capitilising on their games rather than capitulating.

Westno to surprise everyone and continue playing well.

Olympic will finish strong and miss out on the finals in the last game or 2.

Maito and CCB to be too inconsistent to keep the pace.

Jets to take points of the top few teams and completely lack motivation against everyone else.

Valo, ordinary side being propped up by Ben Hay.

Adamstown and Lakes to fight for the spoon.

Crowley to get the Golden Boot.

Edgy to get the premiership.

Why would anyone want to be a junior player at a Magic.
No progression possibility.

Tall poppy syndrome would require either of them to be tall poppies. Not the third tier of Newcastle Football - which is the eighth tier of Australian football - and the 16,476 in world football. Onion Weed syndrome would be more appropriate

The tall-poppy syndrome has meant different things to different Australians. To golfer Greg Norman, the tall-poppy syndrome meant a jealousy of success. Norman explained that if someone in America bought a sports car, then other Americans would say "nice car." However, if someone in Australia bought a sports car, other Australians would scratch it.

Have you scratched any cars lately ??.

Even though magic have often imported or attracted juniors I feel at the top level it's fair game on the cattle you bring in.

Lambton & Weston bought a few in recently. Edgey seem to have a few juniors being promoted but were they original jrs?
