There's a thread in the Australian Football section (http://www.newcastlefootball.net/forum/showthread.php?2258-FFA-Cup-18-19/page11), I've put all the games and times in there.

I'll be checking out the Hamilton derby tonight personally.

2.1 magic over gunners, gunners up 1 nil ht, two whipped cream pens to magic, softer then boiled pasta, sorry ref but ffs

It is quite obvious that Northern refs have been told that NPL teams cannot lose to NewFM teams

That second penalty the keeper dived and knocked the ball away with his hand so the magic player went down.

First penalty was soft too but not as obviously bias towards Magic as the second

Similar at Valentine, but on a lesser scale, some soft calls against Awaba, whilst Valentine were allowed to run through the back of players, pull shirts etc etc. Better team won, but score line flattering in my opinion. Awaba need to learn to play from the outset, Valo scored in first minute of both halves, set the tone for both halves, Awaba had a lot of good play and 4-0 not indicative of effort.... Ben Hay with a bomb in the last five minutes as well.

Speaking of lights, the facilities Valentine put on last night at Baxter Field were nothing short of amateur school, if that's the best a NPL club can do hosting well i'm not sure how they are even there. Lights woeful, canteen closed, refs room a storage shed. Lyall Peacock is Wembley compared to that amateur set up from a semi professional club last night.

I thought the red card was a bit stiff and if it was a red then when NL defender did the exact same thing 10 min later I can't see how that wasn't a red. The handball on the line from NL was another one I don't get how the ref got wrong.

Now I understand your logic, that makes Valentine, Weston and few other teams Magic have beaten coaches crap or is it your just a Magic hater, they are a team you either love or hate, probably something to do with the amount of success over the last 10 years or so. How bad is Bero's coach, Adamstowns coach and Dudley's.

It could be anti-Ruben sentiment as opposed to anti-Magic.
I know some life long Magic families that love the club but aren't a fan of his.

I was at the game. Those in the know reckon Adamstown rested only 1 player. As I don't know the Adamstown players I can't confirm that.
Kahibah led 1 - 0, had a player sent off and then scored two more.

Very happy Kahibah boys.

This result on top of the (lucky I am told) Magic win might indicate that the gap is narrowing between NPL and NL1, at least with some clubs.

Very lucky, as in when the opportunity came to give a penalty no matter how light the keepers hand brushed the player it was given to Magic. Of course if it was once you would call it luck, but as it was two soft penalties more than luck on their side

Having been to a night game at Darling St this year I can tell you their lights would go nowhere near to meeting the minimum criteria.
The lights point straight down from the poles so the sidelines are lit quite well but the middle of the pitch is quite dark.

The new lights are no brighter than their old ones - they are LED so the running costs will be heaps less though so was worth doing.

Thought the whole idea of the upgrade was to meet criteria.

The Lights at Darling st are 10 times better than what we had before. They are a minimum 400 lux across the ground. The LED flood lights fitted are meant to point down.
they will also be set up more efficiently once the pitch is moved north to its final position.

What a goose. The gap is getting smaller and smaller, there is plenty of evidence to prove it. If you watched the Valentine game for the majority of the time you would have thought Kahibah were the NPL team, and there not even a good NL1 team.
The difference in player budgets is the only massive gulf. There are 2 pretty recent NL1 clubs playing for the final 32 spot in the FFA cup. Just add a bit of depth and all the top NL1 clubs would be competitive NPL teams

It was a great game. Hamilton scored early and looked dominant for most of the opening half.
2nd half and Maitland started to win the midfield challenges, got it to 1-1 and for the most part were the better team.

Pretty high standard of football in somewhat slippery and cold conditions.

Many of the challenges and overall competitiveness of both sides reminded me of why football is such a great game. Both sides played hard but there was a lot of creativity in it as well.

These blokes tonight from both sides showed a level of passion many A-League players lost a long time ago.

Would have been nice to watch from home in front of the fire - but the missus likes attending games so... well you know how it is.

I concur, it was a very good game

First game I've been to this season so hard for me to say but Hamilton definitely had the run of the first half. Maitland started rather poorly but came into towards the end of the first half. There was a rather poor diving 2 footed challenge by James Thompson (I think) that would of been a straight red had he made more contact and one could argue probably would of been anyway if it happened in the a-league.
I thought Hamilton were the more skillful throughout and probably lacked that dominant central striker to finish off the very attractive lead-up play. In saying that Maitland bombed at least 3 must score situations.
Despite being a Maitland boy, ive really struggled to enjoy watching them play in recent seasons due to the style of play but I didn't mind what I saw in the second half last night.

Did anyone else notice how good the corners were kicked by both Olympic and Maitland last night ? Every single one of them landed in good areas.
Should get the players down to Jets training and give Dimi some pointers.

8-1 is a pretty significant gap

They are a bottom club in NL1. But they did beat Adamstown 3-0 a few weeks back with 10 men from memory and beat Cessnock who beat Lake Macquarie so where does that put your significant gap theory. Edgy beat another bottom team in NL1 New Lambton 2 - 0 and just beat Westy late and then Edgy beat Magic 4-0 the gap isn't that great anymore any NL1 club with an off season to prepare can compete in NPL, its been proven. It's a non issue.

Also worth noting Adamstown, Valentine and Lakes which you mentioned are the three bottom clubs in the NPL.

I also don't know enough about these NPL vs NL1 games how full-strength either side were. Were the NL1 teams full strength and NPL teams using a mix of fringe players, or were they all mostly full strength?

My significant gap theory stays at 8-1 is a pretty significant gap.

It depends on your definition of compete, but I don't agree it has been proven particularly considering we would be talking over an entire season and not just one-off games, a lot of the time held midweek.

I wholeheartedly agree that it is a non issue.

Read what you wrote, you based your Significant Gap statement on the basis of one result now you are saying it should be not based on just 'one-off games'.

Move on , obvious you have no idea.

I went to the game.
Nerves and a couple of errors saw Kahibah down by 2 very quickly but then for the remainder of the first half Kahibah were the better team. The Valo goal keeper had a busy game and was on form. Second half started much the same until Valo got a third against the run of play. Kahibah shifted to a back 3 to chase the game then had two significant injuries, including one that looked like a deliberate elbow to the back of the head that left blood everywhere and the Kahibah player out of the game. I had a great view of it and was really surprised that the Valo player wasn't sent off.

Three at the back, 2 injuries and chasing the game saw Valo score 5 in the last 10 to 15 minutes and run away with it. The score wasn't a true reflection. At 2-1 at half time, I thought Kahibah might get them.

Credit to Kahibah for not parking the bus and giving it a damn good shot.

Big difference between the teams: finishing. Valo took every chance they had. Kahibah found the keeper too often and it cost them.

The gap is closing between NPL and NL1 (refer to the Magic v South Cardiff match) in one off encounters.

I think we need two NPL comps of 8 teams each, playing 3 rounds. We don't have enough talent for all the teams we currently have in both comps.

Valo result shows a massive gulf from NPL to League one and before anyone questions that, have a think about it.

Do we consider how South Cardiff only lost to Magic 2-1 when thinking about the gulf between the two sides as well? Won't mention that Broadmeadow needed to rely on soft penalties given by the refs to get both of those goals

Absolutely, there is only enough quality in the area for 8 x NPL teams, let them play each other 3 times. Promotion from League 1 is too risky, before everyone bangs on about Cooks Hill have a look where Lakes are ATM, the same will happen to Cookers.

We just don't have the numbers or the facilities in NNSW for 22 or so premier clubs

2 divisions of 8 teams playing each other 3 times with promotion and relegation to follow in a few years (after evaluation of playing standards) but only for the 3 senior grades.
Youth all in one pot split into 2 groups with no promotion and relegation but the pots being mixed each season. Play each other 3 times.
SAP or approved equivalent compulsory for all clubs in both divisions.

In the youth, there will be some very lopsided results until the SAP kids come through. Say 4 years, with the competitions tightening up from under 13 upward each year as the SAP training takes hold.

Why no promotion for youth?

Until u16, whilst competitive, it is still about development. Additionally, imagine a situation where a club comes last in NPL1 and gets relegated but all their youth teams are near or at the top of the the table. If those youth teams were relegated, those kids would walk. Keeping the kids in the clubs also allows clubs to plan for the future, eg our 14s and 15s are really strong and MAY take us back up in 5 or 6 years so lets plan. It also allows for clubs to develop some club spirit or loyalty. I know that my son's NPL club pay very little attention to their youth teams and the same can be said of several others.

I heard it was rigged as the Mariners couldn't afford to pay for a plane or coach to get the players to the match.

200 Lux lights required for state league and 500 lux requirement from Fox to broadcast the game.
Maitland does not have a football venue that meets this standard.
Unless Council pay for lighting to be brought in it's a no go for a real home game.

Maitland No1 Sportsground is preferred option. Great ground with new facilities.

Issue is the lighting but their hoping council helps out with portable lighting.

Council? Local gvt? Sponsor(s)?

No need for all the money to CONTINUE to flow to the richest club in Newcastle, so they can continue to get richer.
Rather the money ends up elsewhere so we have more than one club with 'good enough lights'.

Latest I’ve been told with someone connected to club is have asked Council to fund lights the council very reluctant. It now depends if it’s a broadcast game as $16k to get to 200 lux wHo knows what to get to 500 lux fo Tv. Won’t go to Magic Will go to Edgy or Baddley Park Cessnock.
