View Full Version : general shitness of the Hunter Stadium playing surface

More needs to be done to look after the surface. When I done the Anfield tour a few years back the ground staff were there, we were walking along the side of the pitch and the ground staff blew up to the max.
Did the Anfield and old Trafford tours in '97. We were told 2000pound fine for touching the grass. Old Trafford dude said he'd lose his job if anyone walked on the pitch...shame it wasn't fergy, I'd have shit on it.
Don't disagree, but I was speaking with someone about this issue the other day who has no interest in football but used to work at these types of events. They said Demons use dirt tracks and ramps, where Nitro Circus don't. This might have a different impact, less or more, I'm not sure.
Think you'll find nitro use the breathable rubber matting and a steel scaffold like ramp so you'll see these little square patches where the ramp posts are used.

on my dodgy stream of the game pitch looks mint... I agree over here the pitch is really like everyone says hallowed ground.... gets treated better then the employees that work on it haha... more of a culture of looking after grounds rather yeah that will do approach.

So, the pitch was never the problem for us. Finally a decent pitch and we put in the worst performance in the clubs history.

I'm pretending my entrance fee was just to observe the quality of the pitch for 2 hours. The game was just an unnecessary distraction.

Why don't they use No2 in town or one of the countless other grounds like Cahill Oval?

in all srsness, the last nitro circus has been the best event i've attended at the venue in years
the overall level of skill and management was much higher too
Some **** want to tell Stubbins it ain't his job to fertilize the pitch with piles of shit.
At the rate he is going we will have the best playing surface ever

Get the guys from Cessnock to sort out Hunter Stadium now. The pitch out there tonight is the best football pitch I have ever seen in the Hunter.

I second this.
The council has spent about $30,000 to ensure Cessnock Sportsground’s playing surface is in top condition. - The Herald Dec. 28, 2014 (http://www.theherald.com.au/story/2786926/cessnock-set-for-japans-all-stars/).
THE much-maligned pitch of the region’s premier sporting venue is set to get its first facelift in about 15 years, with $1.25million to be spent resurfacing Hunter Stadium in time to help it host the 2015 Asian Cup. - The Herald May 29, 2014 (http://www.theherald.com.au/story/2317092/hunter-stadium-pitch-to-be-resurfaced-for-125m/)
I understand that Cessnock council didn't have to resurface an entire pitch and that it hadn't been used in months but it was the best pitch I have ever seen. The return on invest for that $30,000 will be massive.
I'm not a groundsman. Can someone explain why Cessnock was so good and Hunter Stadium is so shit? Is it just the amount of use? Or is it not shit and it's just that it wasn't watered as normal before the last game that made it so sandy?
I think Newcastle No.2 Sportsground (Wanderer's rugby ground) could be just as good as Cessnock if prepared for football. I'd love to see it used.
Groundsman at Hunter Stadium is not up to scratch

I think when hunter stadium got resurfaced, it had a whole new sub-base put down too, I seem to recall it being clay-based and had become that compacted over the years it was rock hard and very difficult to get grass to take, and drainage sucked. It was more than a resurface.
They also removed the massive hump.

cessnock groundsman > the entire hunter venues staff
Rather embarrassing the Hunter Stadium crew have a nice big whopping budget from the State Government to provide a top class surface and struggle to do it yet suburban grounds maintained by the local councils and other facilities maintained by club volunteers on little investment put them to shame

Loved the sign at the bar the other night that just said "Beer - $5", they only had one and when asked the "barmaid" said - "dunno, think it's XXXX".

Unsure where to put this, but how good do the massive banners on the front of the stadium look? Something of this ilk was a suggestion from the members committee to the club.
Put one up for the Jets season and one for the knights and you'd be set. It would be fantastic.
If the club are reading, this is an example of what the committee were talking about.

The banners are on the outside of the stadium, above the Western Entry. Doubt anyone from the public has seen what they have done with the grass hills yet.

Thought the pitch looked nice and seemed to play well last night.

So did I. From my vantage point anyway. Those sitting higher up may have had a better overall picture. Not many bobbles and I didn't really see it breaking up.
I was sitting at the top of the Eastern stand. I didn't notice anything bad playing-wise on the pitch, but it didn't exactly look neat. There seemed to be a heap of brighter patches going against the carpet stripes of the field, and it just looked like it had been patched up a fair bit. Not what I'd expect a brand spanking new pitch to look like.
I hope they interviewed players and coaches from last night, and got their views on it. I haven't bothered to look into whether they have or not.

Didnt look good on tv. Bright green strips of grass all over the place. Also on hd it looked like you could still see the lines in the grass where the individual roles met up.
I didnt think it looked great and would of expected better for 1.2 million.Maybe be time for a new head groundsman.

That's what I thought as well. Could see pretty clear striation that I assume is where each bit of turf joined the next. And the bright green patches... just what you want after spending over a million to have it fixed.

Yeah, didn't look like any issues with how it travelled over the surface nor did there appear to be any loose bits of grass like the first game we had on there way back.

Didn't they returf it for the Asian Cup but done it last minute or is it just bodged up??
Remember a recent HAL game where it was shocking but it does appear better but still not up to spec

Appears to be standard practice after warm up and at half time. They have done this at each canberra game.
At Korea v Oman in Canberra, I saw a troupe of staff walking around the ground at halftime, carrying buckets and pitchforks and wearing hi-vis "Pitch maintenance" tops. They were the oddest looking crew I've ever seen.
One had an immense beer gut, such that he couldn't walk normally; he had to shift his enormous weight from side to side like a penguin. He had a very red face but a pleasant smile.
Another reminded me of a conversation in The Office, wherein Gareth and David were discussing the difference between a dwarf and a midget. This fellow was in-between.
Another had, in my professional opinion, foetal alcohol syndrome. But he was obviously competent enough to work a shovel and he, too, had a happy look about him.
Another appeared normal from a distance but, when he came closer, looked like a caricature of evil. A large nose, unshaven, close-set eyes: he embodied those Nazi-era Juden Raus! illustrations.
They looked positively thrilled to be there on centre-stage. Good on them.
