Yeah mate. Kat and I will be playing our usual drinking game. "Every time an Aussie gets out to a shit shot, you take a drink". Poor Kat was so drunk last time he near shit his pants.
Good times though.

Rather ironic that we get into a good position for a change.

Not only do we lose a batsman and now have to win back the intitiative in the game we had we also lose a review when the ****s for once used it at the right time for a change:sigh::angry::mad:

"australia will feel that justice has been done"

no, mr atherton. the correct decision was made. justice would be the umpires going up to khawaja and telling him he's allowed to come back in next wicket.

hope smith scores 1000 (not a typo) now.

Went to watch the fifth day only to find the Aussie boys are ready to fly home early.
Hope they show a bit more of a stiff upper lip in the home series as I have tickets for the Sydney test and would like to experience a sporting contest and not a slaughter.
I am enjoying the Pommie supremacy but would like to see a closer contest.
Back to the nets for the Aussie boys for much needed practice.

Forfeit?? FFS

I am now hoping we get spanked in this test and also spanked in the Ashes back here. Change is needed in Cricket in this country bigtime and we have been papering over the cracks for a long time. Lets be honest we could have won 3 tests in this series :sparring::tongue: We were 14 runs away at Trent Bridge, Rain stopped any hope at Old Trafford and a decent batting performance from 80% of the team at Durham and we win.

Thank **** we didn't.

Change should have definitely occurred last time England thumped us out here yet it didn't come. We just papered over the cracks again.

Our bowling is all right without being classy. We just don't have that 1-2 world class bowlers we need to plough through a team regularly. That isn't the big issue cause that will rectify itself soon enough

Our batting is disgraceful. Two blokes should not be any where near the team are Warner and Watson. Watson has played 40 odd tests for 2 test match hundreds. The last of which came in 2010. You can't keep carrying a bloke like that as a batsmen. If you claim the bloke is an all rounder then he should be batting at 7 and bowling as a genuine bowler. Two problems here he only has 60 odd Tests wickets which ain't enough and the poor sod is likely to pull a heart muscle or something else.

Warner on the other hand does not score runs at first class level and NEVER ****ing has to warrant being considered for selection. So on the basis of some alleged performancs in 20-20 they give him a test cap. FFS

Fixing the batting ain't hard. Get the ****s to play first class cricket more than they do. Playing 2-3 games a year outside of test cricket just ain't enough.

These blokes should be playing 7-8 Shield games each year EVERY year not the 1-2 they do at half pace as well as going off to play County cricket every off season like our stars of yesteryear did and not ****ing off to some 3rd world shithole for a million dollars for 3 weeks of hit and giggle. Not hard to fix. Don't give them a Cricket Australia contract or pick them for National teams if they want to play 20-20.

Sure some will **** off and take the money but the vast majority will stay

Evening chaps.

I used to post on here years ago and came for a wee visit to see how the series was being received down under, i'm english by the way. I was at the 4th test, my first ashes experience and i absolutely loved it. As it happens the england team, cook in particular, have came in for a great deal of critisism here. Ian Botham reckons we'll always be at a disadvantage to the aussies because for the most part we lack killer instinct. Have to say i agree to an extent.

Anyways, i can't wait for the return series. Just need to talk the wife into another trip down under!

An easy 3-0 series win says his captaincy is just fine.
Job done. You Poms need to know when to rub it in after victory rather than offer hope.
Warne, McGrath, Ponting were all right khunts to everyone that's why they were good. They were ****ing with oppositions heads 24/7.
Botham is a loser he's the last bloke to be offering up advice.
Cook, Trott, KP and Bell will have a field day on our decks.
I don't ever really remember the better team ever losing the Ashes, so unless we come up with something pretty quickly (A leader, 5 or 6 bats and some luck) we're ****ed.

have to agree that the poms don't seem to be comfortable with being the better team for some reason.

having said that the difference between the teams is not as large as it was (in the aussies' favour) 15 years ago. aussies were in with a good chance in all but one of the tests and the same can't be said for england under atherton/hussain etc.

aussie quicks are much better at home, and i reckon it'll be a very tight series.

I think what's getting up beefys hooter is we have watched aussie sides destroy us for decades, and when they smelled blood the game was over. I was in Australia december, '06 though i never made it to a test, and that series was humiliating, england are not capable of dishing out a beating like that.

After this series most england fans think 3-0 flattered us. One test was tight, one should have been tight, and australia were very unlucky with the weather on the 2 that were drawn. Would aussie fans see it that way if the fortunes were reversed? I suspect yous would be saying "**** the pommie bastards, lets flog them 5-0 at home!"

I was actually hoping you would flog us in the last test. That way the cricketing Authorities can't palm off a series loss again as they did in 2010-11. A 4-0 series loss says a lot more than 3-0 or 3-1. Good news is that you guys will not be holding that urn forever. We probably won't get it back from you in Australia but we should be very close in 2017 as our blokes develop. In 2017 you will be missing Swann Anderson Pieterson and probably a few others

It's because ABC Grandstand can't broadcast it directly from ABC Grandstand. To access audio, go to http://www.cricket.com.au/live/audio-stream and then you can choose either ABC or BBC radio coverage, I think. Maybe.

I am using the Cricket Australia app which has the same options.

No - it is most long term cricket fans....like many things in test cricket, that second session on the second day will be remembered and talked about for years.

T20 and to a lesser extent, 50 over are like a chinese meal and are quickly forgotten. But they get the bogans through the gate.

It is the intensity and history of test cricket that makes it superior.

For years Clarkey has been slagged about being a wimp and that he is too metro, concentrating on his hair/tattoos/wooza more than his captaincy.. etc..
Then he fires up for his players (I think it was Anderson having words with Bailey) followed by the now infamous "break his fvcken arm" comment, suddenly he is unsporting and its awful..

choosing 2 spinners in modern day cricket (besides india) is such a risk as well, you basically are taking a 50/50 shot at batting first and hoping the wicket deteriorates enough.

Either that or they realise that the match will probably end in a draw because its a batsmans paradise. Play the extra spinner to take load off their two main men, Broad and Anderson.
They go to perth next week and need those two firing to stand a chance of beating us!

what an effort.

Same old story with Johnson. He actually bowls a beautiful line to left handlers and gets decent movement but his only hope with righties is the wide ball outside off that gets edged to 5th slip.
When he fell apart in England the pommy bats were way too patient and left everything across that line. Now because of their position and the very tidy work from Harris, Siddle and (gulp!) Watson they feel the need to go after him. Bell (Poms best bat by far) still plays him quite easily.
He's in their heads now, and good on him.

But he has a gift. He bowls balls that get wickets. He may not necessarily deserve them but he throws them in at a great rate. Siddle on the other hand doesn't have the same gift despite bowling much better 98% of the time he just doesn't get the breaks Johnson does

Yeah totally agree and that was my point. Johnson is benefitting from the work of others just like Macgill, Gillespie and lee (Brett not Shane) did back in the day. But that's exactly why he is there and he is doing his job. As a bowler he hasn't changed much since the day he started. It's just that at the moment the pressure from other bowlers is helping him.
When coaches talk about bowling units and bowling plans this is exactly what they mean.
Also, Siddle has a gift of completely screwing with Pietersens head, which is ****ing awesome.

But the most ridiculous part of Johnsons grip over them is that he is only bowling mid to low 140kms anyway. He is still a long way short or Brett Lee Shoaib Akhtar etc when they were regularly pushing them through in the 150km - 160km range.

Johnson ain't slow but there are plenty of blokes out there who bowl at similar pace levels.

The other thing is they are test match cricketers allegedly Surely someone has bowled short pitch bowling at them in the past to ruffle them up??

He has bowled some in the 150's and plenty in the high 140's. And there aren't really that many at that level right now. Talking about Lee and Akhtar is pointless since a bunch of these guys wouldn't have played them. Hard to believe Lee has been out of test cricket for 5 years :(

And England's fastest is mid to high 130's at their absolute quickest whilst of our quicks, the slowest is Siddle in the mid 130's.

The Dunster
09-12-2013, 03:10 PM
It's not the speed that worries batsmen. It's when bowlers can get the ball around chin height off a good length that worries batsmen.

That's why Curtly Ambrose and Joel Garner who were not the fastest of bowlers were among the most feared to have ever played the game.

Johnson is similar to that pair in style yet another 15kmh or so quicker. Johnson just lacks the consistency of Garner and Ambrose.

Bloke was scoring a million runs before he was 1st selected and then a million more to be recalled...I honestly believe he should of stayed in the team longer than he did but we've been strugglin for results before this campaign. Agree you should always bat first regardless of the conditions 99% of the time though being that they have back to back tests it may be slightly strategic move as they may not want to bowl last in Melbourne and then have to bowl first in Sydney and risk injury/burnout of their quickies.

At least bowling first here should see the likes of Harris be a much better chance of backing up in Sydney as they should have had that extra day or two of rest

Brett Lee didn't bowl flat out but he did hit Piers Morgan a few times. Piers Morgan had no idea and was backing away / jumping around in the crease. Note: Lee was bowling down leg side to make sure he hit Morgan as he backed away from the ball before Lee had even released it.

Sounded like a great line to bowl to a fat **** like him.

Grimario

Hit him 4 times. Apparently possible hairline fracture of the wrist and going to have some ridiculous bruising just above his kidney where he was struck in the back.

Also bowled once.

To give Piers credit he in one sense actually aimed up. Admittedly he doesn't have the technique/ability to face bowling of Bingers calibre but he had some balls to get in there and didn't exactly dodge it when he copped a couple of blows.

Even loved how he kept talking it up after copping a blow when a lesser man would have shut up

The guy's a publicity hungry dick.

In much more serious cricket news, skull has announced his retirement from commentating.
This sucks. The guy is so good to listen to knows the game inside out, but knows how to have a laugh at the same time.

The frog joke is the worst in history, but skull's delivery is perfect.... Far better than his bowling!

Richard Hadlee blowing up deluxe about Lee. Saying trying to bowl at Morgans body was akin to genocide or some such shit (no link coz I'm lazy and can't be ****ed).

My thoughts:
1. Hadlee obviously doesn't know much about Piers Morgan.
2. Hadlee is still a wanker.

Agreed, hadlee's whinge was a bit ott, but agree with his point that he should have just knocked the stumps over 6 times.

Get to 400 ahead would be ideal. Bat out majority of tomorrow, Throw England in for 1.5 sessions. Get some wickets, put on a show for McGrath day. Really, we'd have to be pretty bad to lose it from here. Might as well put on a show, drag it out...

Nah, prepare the entire team for bowling/fielding today, except for the two out in the middle. Instructions T20 mode. First wicket, declare. England are so mentally fragile that quick runs then unexpected declaration could see everyone out by tea.

CA must have lost a fair bit of moolah this summer... not one test has gone to 5 days. And some of the 4 day ones had free entry, didn't they?

OK so now what? (paging Hawk).
Doolan has enough buzz about him and has backed it up with an impressive debut to start asking what about Watson?
You aint moving Smith, Clarke or Marsh on this form are you?
Is his only chance to open with Warner (two sloggers isnt a stereotypical pairing). Or do you move Marsh up to open and put Watson at 5?
If fit, his bowling has been great, and there is no way in hell Johnson is going to keep tearing through everyone (regression to the mean etc etc etc).

Got home and watched most of Doolans knock last night. Am yet to be convinced. Did stick it out and post a score but not exactly sure how he does it. Doesn't seem to have any shots that he owns ( hard to remember a couple of blazing on drives or great square cuts etc) and looks pretty iffy on the pull.

Good on him for getting in there and taking his chance but at this stage I have some concerns about him long term particularly at 3

Great observation Member. He doesn't have the classic style or technique of your great #3 like a Lara or Tendulkar. He seems to see the ball really late but middles it nonetheless. He does hit that back foot pull shot in front of square quite sweetly (the shot he got out in 1st dig) that's a Ponting special that shot.
To me Marsh looks to have the best technique out of all of them, bloke just doesn't look like getting out but then does something daft.
What's the thinking, bat til lunch today and ask them to get 500 in 5 sessions?

Theres just something about Doolan that concern me. If he does what he done in this test all the time he will be an effective test cricketer. There isn't though signs that he is a class act though for my liking that you usually see in Aussie batsmen at a young age ie Clarke Ponting Smith etc

I feel they already have enough runs. History suggests they do being this would be a world record chase.

Feel we should come out and play some 20-20 cricket for an hour and 15 mins. Seriously go the tonk. **** worrying about losing wickets. Actually try and strike some physiological blows for the rest of this game and the series. Cart a couple of their bowlers hardcore and see if they go to water like Anderson Swann etc did in the Ashes,

Come out and have a 30-40 min session at them where Mitch can tear in for 4 overs and give them heaps and then go off for lunch and then tear in again first up after lunch

so is it manslaughter? i mean the bloke did bowl a ball at 140 plus km/h at the blokes face.

if i threw the equivolent ball at someone with the intention to intimidate, i'd expect to be charged. does a the fact that it happened on a sporting field between consenting adults change matters?

lets get real here though, how many bouncers get bowled without people getting injured? squillions

australia won the last ashes through mitch johnson bowling beamers pretty much - you can't ban it, it's a legitimate ball to bowl, and it's a great leveller. an average team with a great fast bowler who can get sides back in the game makes the game interesting. imagine if cricket was heinous a subcontinental dustbowl spin dictated borefest (oh wait)

didn't richie richardson say he was against banning the bouncer because it would take away his best scoring shot?
