Would love to know why Goodwin,Archbold,Mauragis have not made a match day squad. We have had Hoff play left back and he looks uncomfortable out there. We have lacked any punch of the bench all year Goodwin provided that last year

To be fair we have got our recruitment rate up

3 out of 5 is a great ratio

Beka Penha Boumal are all great signings

The Greek bloke the jury is out on and the Spanish guy is MIA

I would take that ratio of successful signings every season

Party tricks don't impress me, none of them have shown anything to get excited about, passing to a Jets player would be a good start

Gotta say, comparing to our past recruitment, this season has been amazing..

I've been arguing with Frodo about this..
He loves Penha, I still think the jury is out on him.. (I totally agree that Boumal and Miekeltadze have been great, particularly Beka)
I get so frustrated with Penha cause he does some absolutely amazing stuff, and then other times he just passes it straight to the opposition, or shoots from roughly halfway, or dives cause someone looked at him.. etc..

Beka is brilliant, just wish he wouldnt always drop deep, Similar issues with Penha who also could release the ball quicker. Boumal is starting to annoy me, bit of a ball hog and tries to beat 2 or 3 players instead of passing to the open man

Not trying to compare quality at all.. But this Penha situation reminds me slightly of Ozil at Arsenal. When we are on top and things are rosy, he links up constantly and looks a class above, but when things aren't going well and we aren't on top (teams are set up to control us) he looks like he forcing things and frustrates. Plus, even though they both track back and defend, because they pick and choose the best times to do so it appears they are lazy. It also makes a difference when we have more than one passing option available, over the last 2 games we've been flat and not working off the ball, which is also why Boumal has looked isolated.

The flipside of us looking more flat has been that we haven't died after 65 mins and been overran towards the end of the game. Maybe Papas is trying to find a pace that means we can still attack/transition at pace like we did at the start of the season but have some legs to finish the game off, going to 3 atb was also interesting to me. That's a simple way to transition between all out attack and all out defence, as Stanny would know from Conte's days at Chelsea. Marquis being unavailable might also force us drop to a 2 man midfield as well.

Our Manager needs to take a good hard look at himself

That midfield of ours is absolutely honking at actually getting about the place

That goal came after repeatedly Grozos and Arques made very little effort to actually run time and time again

Eventually it cost us

I get the fact that we have limited depth in our squad but FMD tactically this was obvious all half and it is really not a dereliction of duty that either personnel or tactics have not been adjusted

I get we ain't playing well either but that was one soft goal to concede

The dodgy send off and weak penalty the second half to turn arpund a defecit are the type of things that happen to Smurfs FC not the Jets

To be fair even against 10 men we were ****ing garbage tonight

Would I be wrong if I say Brisbane were not always pretty under Ange?.... In Few games, decisions went their way, like us tonight but they always stick to their style, fought to the end and got the points

I wouldn't say we turned that around through our philosophy eventually wearing the other team down

We were odds on to be better in the second half as we couldn't string 3 passes together in the first

The game definitely changed after the send off

Whether we would have dominated the period from 50 mins to 70 mins like we did if Victree had 11 men I doubt

The send off changed the game gave us encouragement

We did enough to take advantage of our fortune but I wouldn't say we really done enough in the last 40 mins against 10 men

If anything we scraped to a lead from a soft penalty and hung on and allowed a 10 men side opportunities to get a draw

We are a work in progress

Just a mention for the spectacular 40 meter assist that Penha produced: that level of precision and accuracy is top shelf.
Also, kudos to Yuel for believing, his touch was just as lovely.

I have noticed, Penha is doing lots of this through passes from 5-10 m outside the box, but the vast majority of them are not understood and our midfield/forwards don't make a run.
When they do, it often results in a goal or a big chance (see Thurgate vs. City).
If they learn to read his passing, this guy is a gold mine.

As somebody said the other game, we were the much better team and dropped points.
Considering this the karma balance of getting the points when we probably didn’t deserve all 3.

Good to see Mauragis back in the picture.
Thought Beka was excellent, really like what he brings.

Not sold on the Arques - prefer O’Doherty and Thurgate in that role.
Grozos and savvas aren’t really filling me with much joy either.

Penha is a welcome addition. Some maturity in his play would go a long way. He’s certainly capable of that x-factor pass or shot. Just needs to get his shots on target % and passing accuracy up a bit. In saying that, I like the dynamic of Thurgate and O’Doherty holding the midfield while he roams. Boumal and Yuel are both handy every second game. That finish. If that was ninkotwat or even Maclaren we’d be still wiping up the jizz from commentators.

Don’t think I was as annoyed watching Regan play as I was I was Jurman. Except when he was gassed after 60. But expected I guess. Interested to see more of him. He’s not the answer to our backline, but I’d love to see some repercussions for repeated poor performances.

Given Jimmy G's tweet earlier in the week, I agree he was a surprise - but O'Doherty and Gussy need a rest, so rotation was inevitable. Mo Al-Taay will be disappointed not to start but he either hasn't done enough to earn it or we wanted Arques guidance. Funny that before kick off you saw him encouraging the team to "talk-talk" but you saw nothing of him directing, coordinating - don't know if that's his role but my bias was confirmed.

Listening to the match, the effect mics were picking up someone yelling at "Mario" quite a bit. Listen to it just before the goal. His mobility isn't up to what is needed for our system in that role. We'd need to play 2 beside him or put him in the 10 - which i'd be reluctant to do on both counts at this stage.

However, we earned 3 points (not completely deserved IMO) and JO'D got a break so it's a good outcome.

I think O'Doherty alongside him would be a huge step up from Grozos, especially in terms of defensive cover and work rate.

Another point is that in the games where we've played well he would probably look a lot better. In the first half we barely strung 5 passes together before turning it over. If we were bossing possession like in some other games this season, I think he may look a lot different.

Last thought is that he often dropped in to the back line to play the conductor role. I wonder if this was a tactic to cover for Regan and get some ball playing out from the back. I don't think we've seen the CDM dropping in between the CBs too much this season.

Watching the mini match and Davidson's clearance off the line from Ingham.
Ingham is tracking the ball and Folami blatantly knocks him goalwards (a foul) and Ingham goes to ground...gets up and stops Davidsons shot.
Ingham is only Johnny-on-the-spot because of Folami's shoulder charge.
Thanks, Folami! you :arse:. You're the reason a clear shot on goal was able to be blocked. :rof:
F-tard is the first to put his arms up claiming the goal too lofl

Wonder if it would have been reviewed if JD scored it.

Edit: In another glorious moment in A-League coverage, Yuel's goal is completely missing in the mini-match. :wtf:
It goes from 54th min with the afters for Hoff's non goal to 68th and the pen decision.

I watched the match back in full and there was a tackle from Beka on one of the Melb CBs where there were big shouts for him to get a second yellow.
They showed a "replay" of it, which was a frozen first frame for 5 seconds followed by the frozen last frame for a second.
Not sure if that was the case in the live coverage, or maybe an issue on my end trying to watch the replay back. I was curious though, the live angle looked like they both kicked the ball at the same time but Beka put his hands up straight away and Victory players were pretty angry about the challenge.
