I think I just heard right on NBN news the club has been told the game needs to be played as there have already been too many disruptions.

This is correct. Also Syd paying $2.10 still. Worth the investment

it was rumoured our goalie ranks have been hit by this outbreak, does that mean we'll have a junior keeper in goals then? I agree too, don't think this game would be going ahead if Shitney were the ones with the player shortage, backlog of games or not...

JETS V SYDNEY UPDATE TO FANS FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN
Article Image Hero
In response to some of the enquiries we’ve recently been encountering regarding the COVID cases amongst our squad, Newcastle Jets Executive Chairman, Shane Mattiske has penned the following letter to our supporters.
To our Members, fans, and stakeholders,
By now many of you will be aware that the Club has unfortunately been hit with a fresh round of COVID cases which has had a significant effect on our playing squad and football staff.
As a result of these cases, our starting striker, winger and defender are out and we have lost two of our three goalkeepers. Jack Duncan remains COVID-free however is still returning from injury and not 100% fit. Five of our key football staff are also affected.
Over the last few days, the Club has been intensely engaging with the APL on the implication for tonight’s match.
Under the APL’s regulations, the Club is in a position where we can request the match to be postponed, as has happened for the Jets and other teams in the competition to date.
The existing league regulations state that if a Club requests a match to be postponed, but it is not possible for the match to be played at a later date, the match will be declared as a no result match – where both teams receive zero points. With the finals series scheduled to start on May 13, it was made clear to us there will be no opportunity for the match to be rescheduled to another date in the regular season.
Across the whole competition, the APL has now determined that any new postponement that occurs due to COVID will result in a no result. Whilst the Jets v Sydney FC match is unfortunately the first instance of this regulation being applied, we have been advised that moving forward, it will be the case for any Club that experiences significant Covid disruption.
As a result, we have now been directed that our choice is to either move forward and play this evening’s match without key players, or to seek a postponement and be given a no result.
Our Club has been dealt a very challenging hand, however, despite this, our nature as a Club and a team, is that we will always compete and fight for victory, irrespective of the adversity we face and the challenges we must overcome. It’s what we’ve always done, and we believe that’s what our fans and the people of Newcastle deserve. As such, we have confirmed to play Sydney FC as planned and have not sought a postponement.
I urge you, the fans, to help us through this fight and bring your support tonight. While we always feel your support, our team needs you even more so now.
There is no doubt that we will line-up with a significantly affected side and, due to the late stage of the competition, will be the first Club to face the sour decision of playing with a significantly affected side from COVID, or face a no-result. However, we also believe in our squad, and the players we still have.
Due to the cases, the Club currently has no reserve A-League goalkeepers available. We are still in the process of trying to clear the way for a keeper from a Northern NSW NPL club to join the Jets for one match and act as a reserve keeper. This is not yet resolved.
Our team selection is still being determined and will be advised closer to kick-off.

Only fair that Sydney have to sit their best players out too. Entirely foreseeable issue at the start of the season so why change the approach now?

As some elsewhere said....take the no result. Like a loss to them.
Why was this "rule" not conveyed earlier?

Official translation: "We make up the rules as we go. In this case it could be an easy 3 points for our friends at SydFC, and since we are holding you by the balls... well suck it up, Jets. We'll make up different rules if Syd or Victory are affected in the near future. Regards, you losers."

I read it more as the league offered us no result, but we decided we need points to try and make finals and no result doesn't help us at all, 1 or 3 points gained is needed for us to try and make finals. So we made the choice to play the game and roll the dice at some points.
It is a hard pill to swallow given how compressed our season has been due to accommodating other teams' postponements, but we are unable to when it's our turn.

IF (definitely a big if still) we go on to win this game, it's pretty strong proof that Papas' system is working a treat. Different formation, but the press is still very similar to me and the chances are still coming from the same sort of attacks, albeit with a different style of striker on the end of them.
Front foot defending, no time for opposition midfielders and transition at speed through Penha or Boumal. It's simple but brilliant when it works.... and when the backline can keep their shit together, lol.

The image of that VAR call is ridiculous. They are so precise with where they place those lines but have a look at the ball, how on earth do they know that's the moment it was kicked.
Unless it's clearly offside and you can tell that from one replay (maybe two) then why kill the theatre and passion of the moment

Boumal in a more central position is a very interesting move, he definitely had more presence and space - as opposed to taking defenders head-on (and losing balls) on the wings.

Back to back clean sheets are great for a team that had struggled on that front, the 3 at the back really made a difference and helped cover up for Elsey wanting to roam forward and Jurman being a bit slow at the back, certain mistakes weren't as punishable.
Mauragis and Goodwin back in the squad is only going to be good for us. If Lucas can get to the point he's playing 90 minutes, and Archie can be a constant threat off the bench then I can really see this team making a strong push towards the top 6 in the back end of the season.
I'm hoping Papas doesn't just revert to his old formation once all the covid positive players return and he keeps this style cause I think it got the best out of basically every player. Be curious how it works with Beka who gets back much further then I noticed Archie getting back but I still think it could work quite well

Honorable mention to the Sydney "supporters" for being such a bunch of f*ckwits, in particular the genius who did obscene gestures to a dad with his 2 little girls at the end of the game.

great to see archie and maraugis getting a run and making such excellent contributions. Also worked the crowd brilliantly once they'd been subbed off.
Agree with maito mitch, how can you be so definitive with the lines yet so shit with when the ball is kicked? If the ball is still on his foot in one frame, and not in the other, then they should take the last frame where it is clearly on the foot as the frame to check where the players are. And why do we always bang on about advantage to the attacker and then do something like this? Regan's celebration was also awesome and great interaction with the crowd. It's what we need more of.
Boumal and Penha both delighted and annoyed me at different times. So much skill but also so many touches to disadvantage. Penha should have buried the chance he had (would have been called back offside but you should still finish those).
Back three seemed to work pretty well. No disrespect to Hoffman, but why aren't we playing Mauragis instead of him? I can see why Archie is having trouble getting a start and on the bench (the growing pains would explain that but he should be on the bench before yuel in my opinion), who do you leave out to put him in? Good also to see Doherty back on the park.
The future is good if we can keep the young'uns for a few years.

At this stage, I think Archie should stay as a bench player. He's great, but to me, we looked so much better as a backline playing 3 at the back and that's with Regan as the other player who I don't think is the greatest CB of all time. I like Archie, but off the back of one game, I don't think he should unseat Beka, Penha or Boumal in the long term in that front 3 and I don't see another way he could get on the pitch without those guys losing their spot.
Going into next season though I think we really should try and accommodate him so that we can have both him and Beka up front which could prove to be a really deadly strikeforce
