Aloisi is a classic on the touchline.

You can see how Ange is trying to get Victory to play from back to front but it will take time for the team to be able to play this style effectively. The Heart pressed very high and the Victory defence found it hard to get out which led to several mistakes that cost them a goal and should have cost them a few more. In attack they haven't gelled properly yet either, but the sings are there that, when they get it right, they will be a force. My main concern with them was that they didn't have enough width at times.

Heart played well and should have had a few more goals. Garcia had a brilliant debut, he could prove to be a key player in the league this season. The new central defender looked quite shaky, while Fred was excellent as per usual and the wingers were a constant threat. McAllister is actually an impressive footballer when playing in a team that can pass the ball.

All in all, it was a great start to the season.

I can just see the anti-football types in the media who have been saying the A-League is dead for the last couple of seasons wiping the egg off their faces.
Great match to open the season. Good to see Flores back in the HAL; he is a class act, although I have to admit I do miss Hernandez already....he thrived on these sort of games. Victory seem to still have some work to sort out at the back and in adapting to Ange's philosphy of playing out, while Heart have shown that they are strong all over the park and will prove a lot of the so-called "experts" wrong this year.

Yeah, I don't know what Foxe was thinking either.....looked like he had just come off the set of "Beauty and the Geek". Gave the Hoff a nice tap on the backside just before he went on too!!!

Yeh, not a good look for Foxe.

On Victory, I thought that their defence is still very slow and with their full/wing backs pushing on, it left alot of room for Hearts speedier players like Maté and Williams to get in behind them and then whip in a cross. Agreed McCallister looked a lot better than he has.

Can't wait to see how Griff, Heskey and Taggart/Goodwin/Brown tear them to shreds.

Still on Heart, they need to realise that they score by avoiding the keeper and putting the ball into the net. FFS how many chances did they have in the 2nd half that they kicked straight into Thomas. They weren't good saves, just hit too close to him.

christ he looked shattered.

Hes spoken about this before, its a deliberate ploy of his never to go straight back to the rooms after a game (especially a loss). He goes through his post match comments a thousand times in his head to make sure hes measured and not emotional.
His reasoning is that months of goodwill and positive buildup of players confidence etc can be eroded in an instant if you go in there screaming and carrying on like an idiot. Says its the easiest way to lose the dressing room in a hurry (for more on this see: Kosmina, J).
He reakons Fergie is the only one that can get away with it because everyone is so shitscared of him.

The way Ange has his teams play relies heavily on having a Broich amoung the ranks to not only assist the strikers but to also give defenders under pressure a target when playing out from the back.

No suprises.

Can't believe I picked Victree to win the league!!!!

Must have been day dreaming and forgot that Leijer Milligan Foschini can't defend. Don't know what depth they have there but Ange is gonna need to find some defenders fast!!

It was almost as if Ange had spent an entire pre season working on the possession based game and as soon as Victree were put under some pressure they reverted to the counter attack style of prior years. Sure they had some good quantity of possession but done little with it. Everything they did create was on the break. No wonder he looked pissed.

GVE should take note of Victree's efforts and make sure Taggart and all other speedy options are used in the Victree games as they are a slow back 4 and waiting to be exploited

Heart were in the first half a little all over the show. Created their stuff out of nothing. In the second half sat back way too deep and picked Victree off almost at will on the counter. Shame their finishing was Zadko like otherwise it may have finished 8-1. Was surprised they didn't actually really take Victree on a bit more as they were waiting to be issued the last rights but Aloisi took the conservative approach to try and keep it tight and get troops back and defend what they had.

Not really fussed on the Heart midfield trio of Thommo - Fred - Garcia don't look like they have the necessary defensuve aspects to be a great success

lol, as I expected the plan for WSW is:

1. Win the ball back with NTS or Beauchamp
2. Pump ball long to strikers (if the ball hasn't already been lost by NTS, see post by boz above)
3. Foot race between Mariners defenders and WSW strikers
4. Repeat

Exactly the way they played against us in pre-season. "Playing out from the back", lol, what a wank that is.

To give Popovic credit, they are organised very well defensively from what I have seen of them, not only at the back but also throughout the midfield and at the front. Total retards with the ball though.

Random question: Why are the idiots using lower case 'i's in all the player names? Not sure if it's every club but I've seen "DEL PiERO", "BRiDGE" and I think the Mariners also have this. Are people too stupid to recognise an upper case i now?

Thought the NRMAWSWFC were very impressive on Saturday night. Aaron Mooy was excellent and will be dominant with Shinji alongside. Once they get rid of Labi, they'll go alright and may make the finals (with squad depth obviously a problem). Holger should get Mooy and Jeggo in now.

Brisbane were three passes and a little bit of timing away from demolishing Perth. Think they'll win it again, although Victory also looked brilliant in patches.

Nix, Mariners and Perth will be solid but succumb once the class of Roar and Victory kick in. Heart will struggle with injuries mid season. Sydney will come good, and Adelaide look a well-balanced team.

That leaves us - should be an awesome season in the stands. Some of the early commentary from budding comedians was priceless.

Great to have the HAL back. I've always loved the Tippeliga and HAL much more than EPL, LL, SA. Something about the honesty of the play, its fallibility and evenness.

How about the Perf Bogans? Revenge for what was shown to be a clear penalty. Outplayed the entire GF...but it 'shoulda been ours'. The team looks great on paper, but it is littered with thugs.

Yeah commentators said towards the end the Mooy had been 'quiet'. Geez, I thought he was excellent and really anchored and composed that team. Agree him and Ono will be quite good together.

TBF, he did take a good 30 minutes to get a first touch on the ball. After that though, I agree, he was very exciting to watch.

I wasn't as impressed with Mooy. You can definitely see the potential is there, but how many time did he give the ball away? More than once he was too slow to pass the ball and actually got tackled from a player behind him. I can see why he hasn't won a contract at a decent club in Europe.

At the same time I think the A-League will be good for him to hone his skills.

The marquee players are undoubtedly quality players but seriously do the commentators have to point it out every time the touch the ball? They are just passing the ball the same as the other bloke that just passed it to them. Get over it

Agreed, reminds me of teenage girls at a Justin Bieber concert.

have just been watching the first half of the melbourne derby (yep, a little late). my thoughts:
- when is traore eligible for the socceroos?
- garcia looks really good. if vidosic deserves a shot at the socceroos from last weeks performance, garcia should definately not be forgotten too. i expect a huge season from him.
- fred is absolute class.
- macallister has surprised me massively. completely amazing compared to what i was expecting from him.
- flores is great. he'll be so massive for victory this season.
- as much as i hate admitting it, archie is still really really good. such a huge player for victory.
- hayden foxe, lol.

Still your thoughts? I really like traore but imo he has been a little disappointing for victory, found out in both the heart game and massively against roar. Granted he was up against Halloran who is no slouch, top player, will be massive this season.

Traore looks good going forward as a left back but is a little suspect defensively. Not what you need at NT level. But then again has never effected the likes of David Carney knocking up 46 caps and counting for his country

Aziz Behich should be getting a look in before Traore in my opinion.
