The decision to slash contributions to clubs for the upcoming A League by the APL is an extremely concerning one.
In my opinion the league will loose alot of good players which had already started to happen. Zawada, Da Silva, Marcello and Mak are some of the big names to depart. This is a clear sign that there is not enough to retain these players on or in some cases similar money to what they were earning. These players are the guys that have come to the league from Europe who have been solid professionals and set standards for younger players.
For mine it's great that Irankunda, Ballard , Girdwood-Reich and others are looking at advancing their careers overseas. But with Big names going, who are we replacing them with? It won't be similar big name players.
The salary cap needs to advance in order for the League to continue to grow, otherwise I see it as a glorified youth league with some older players in there to balance the mix a little. The A League will struggle in Asian competitions as we all know all big Asian leagues are growing rapidly.
I know the Mariners have punched well above their weight recently, but for mine Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne city should dominate. These 4 teams will exhaust the salary cap exemptions to put together better squads.
I hope I'm wrong but the next 2 years looks very concerning. The APL have really took the league backwards. I'm not blaming the current board, they have inherited a mess. But the original board made some major stuff ups. The standard has been good in the last couple of years, but that may change this year.
