Thread for tailgating ideas pre-game Jets matches

Had a chat to the owner of Thirsty Messiah today. This is the micro-brewery in Broadmeadow off Lambton Road.
He seems quite happy to have a group of tailgaters outside his business on Match Days.
See the attached photo. I think this mini car park will be perfect for tailgating. Only problem will be the heat. People will have to bring their own shade and ideas for cooling down.

There is a carpark here now. Shortest walk to the Stadium from any pub.

Got to be honest, don't think you will get many takers for this seppo stuff. Most people will want to go to Wests or General Roberts and have a beer or something there.
Easier to meet up with others, beer on tap, air con. Plus tailgaiting is just not a thing here

Why don't you just go inside and support this brothers business instead?
Asking a brewery if you can go drink your own booze in his carpark is some of the lowest rent behaviour I've ever seen.

that's fine if people want to do that. There's enough options for all types of people. My experience of the General Roberts was I talked to the owner to see if they were happy to host the Squadron. We went there as a group and they kicked us out for being too loud and I have never been back. Same for Wests, Phil Gardner doesn't want the Jets to exist so why you'd give your money to them I don't know.

It is not his carpark, it is a public carpark that was built for the Knights Centre for Excellence. I don't need his permission to use the car-park, I am just seeing if he wants to help turn it into something special in order to reap some benefit from it.
He wants this to happen. He is excited about it because he knows he will get customers. He has offerred to make his smoker BBQs available and will sell food to people who want to buy it rather than bring their own. He is looking at getting some musicians to perform to the people in the carpark. It is probably better for him that rowdy people stay outside his business but still buy his stuff.
Yes, we will go in and have beers, and then go outside and chat and do our own thing. The whole point of tailgating is that it is like a pre-game picnic, you do what you want. You mingle with other people and create a great pre-game atmosphere.
It is a free place to park pre-game. The idea is to get there early so you know you have a parking spot close to the stadium and then you pass the time with others who want to do the same.

The thing I like about supporting footaball is that you take the most fun things from other cultures and you adopt it to have the most fun possible. Nobody complained when Argy and I put up the Argentinian streamers over the Squadron in the early days. Everybody borrows chants from other clubs. The problem with McDonald Jones stadium in that there is no atmosphere around it. You have to walk at least a km to sit in a pub. This idea is aimed at bringing some outdoor atmosphere in a public place so that as people make their way to the stadium they feel excited about the experience.

My prediction is that once the Thirsty Messiah gets known as the pre-game venue for the Jets, the place will be packed anyway and the carpark will just continue the atmosphere outside into the public space. The owner said he is going to arrange a meeting between himself, myself and the owner of EAO Entertainment to see if we can come up with a way to really make this work.
I got a really good vibe from talking to him. I also emailed and phone Broadmeadow Magic but didn't get a reply.

Guys I'm appreciating the feedback. It is always good to get a counter argument to give you a reality check. if you can punch a hole in the idea that's great, I'll take it on board. Thanks for commenting.

Just out of interest, do you believe you will actually get a decent number of people attending this yank shit? I'll be surprised many, if any attend. Tailgaiting is just not a thing that people have any interest in doing here, or probably don't know about it
People go to the General Roberts, the Premier or Wests because its nearby and thats where everybody usually goes anyway. I know I go to meet up with my mates in either one of those. An easy place to go have a feed, a few drinks and a punt on something as well.

Yes I do, because people need a place to park their car and do something before the game. How many people use public transport to get to games? That is the only thing that would stop this being a good idea.
I am collecting data about it now. Maybe due to the derogatory ways people on here are referring to is as "seppo" and "yank shit" I'll refrain from calling it tailgating, but the idea of having a place close to the Stadium that is a Jets Supporters HQ where noone can kick us out is a great one.
Over the years we tried the Newcastle United Club, the District Tennis Club, the Premier Hotel, The General Roberts.
The Thirsty Messiah brewery is closer to the Stadium then all of those places. There is enough room for Jets fans inside and outside the pub and he wants us to be there.

Walking distance from this carpark to the nearest ticket gate is 650m
Walking distance from the General Roberts/Wests is 1.2km to 1.3km to ticket gates. The Premier is over 2km away.
So even by this fact alone, people will want to get to this carpark earlier than other spots and use this pub. There are only 67 parking spots in this lot, so that is not too many fans I would need for it to be deemed to be a success. Plus all the other general street parking that will be used up as you draw closer to game time.
So having activites for people to do while they are there, and make them feel good pre-game is an idea that could quite easily work.
You don't have to think of it as tailgating. There are many markets and music festivals that Australians are naturally drawn to. It is not like this is an idea from outer space.
Also, not sure if you've noticed the explosion in home-made campers and 4wd camping set-ups post Covid. This will be a great way to use them.

Cool, that is a pretty good location for him to take advantage of a game day crowd too. Not a good location for tailgating though as there is no carpark and I wouldn't consider it a good rallying point for a walk to the stadium, but looks like a great place to meet up with mates.

At the the end of the day, he is having a go at getting people together. Far more than the club has done. People will go, or they won't. No need to s**tcan him for having a go.

Thanks for that. I don't mind getting negative comments though. If someone has a genuine point that I haven't considered it is really valuable information. I don't want to lead the owner of the Thirsty Messiah down a false path and he ends up hating Jets fans because he wasted his time and money booking musicians etc.
Yes, in my experience football clubs do not think AT ALL about the supporter pre-game experience and how to make it a fun day. They don't think about anything outside the stadium gates. We have to do it ourselves and it helps if you have a nearby business buy in to the idea.

There is this scene in the movie "The Perfect Catch" that I just love. This is the Jimmy Fallon/Drew Barrymore movie about being a Red Sox fan based on the Nick Hornby book, Fever Pitch, about being an Arsenal fan.
It is just the activity and vibe around Fenway Park on season opening day, where there are bands playing and people milling around etc. It just makes the game itself the peak of a great day out. That's what I'm aiming for in my mind.
I used to love all the little superstitious rituals people came up with, like tossing a coin into Styx Creek as a pre-game sacrifice, or renaming Griffiths Road, Joel Griffiths road. This is the real heart of a day out at football.

Fair play to you if you can get it happening, Dezy. The risks (personal, financial, otherwise) are always there but if you can get it off the ground then that's great. Wish you the best of luck.

Cheers, thanks for that. I think the way to make it work would to create some pre-season hype leading up to the first match against Melbourne City on the 19th of October as a Season opening event. Because we won't be playing at home again until December, this almost makes it a one-off event and gives people quite a while to see if they want to do it again.

The carpark doesn't have an official name yet. It would be good to name it and get the council to pay for that name. Any ideas?
It would be great if Jets supporters came up with names for:
the pedestrian bridge across styx creek off Perth Road
the pedestrian bridge over Lambton Ker-rai creek
and the walking tracks along styx creek and lambton ker-rai creek
If they don't have names yet they may as well have Jets related names

If they were to name any of them which i don't think the Council will ever do, they're more likely to name them after Knights players tbh. Whether you agree with it or not, The Knights have had a bigger impact than the Jets/United/Breakers have.

More for our benefit and our traditions than anything else, but if something becomes known by an unofficial name for a sustained period it makes sense to keep it that way.

Killa,
So as this looks like it is going to be a thing for at least the Season Opener, how likely would it be for you and your mates to switch from the GR, Premier or Wests to the Thirsty Messiah? I don't think you can punt there but you can always use SportsBet.
I just think it would be great to have as many people as possible in the one general area, even if some stay inside and some migrate from outside to inside the brewery.

Quite interested in this/thirsty messiah becoming a potential pregame pub. It has a great selection of beers. Only negative is they don't sell spirits so it's beer, cider and wine I believe.
Last game of last season againgst the mariners we were told to quieten down at the Gr as we were chanting in the outdoor area.
Anyone been there before games? Is it mainly jets fans there?
Rippit golf is another option (site of old tenzo).
I really wanna see some old faces this season now we have an owner.

I reckon this might be a goer
I'll be going to games with my kids which will kind of limit us to the 5 p.m. kick offs, but that's most of the games this season thankfully
having the car there will also reduce the likelihood of me being a terrible, drunken father and embarrassing my children yet again

Going to Wests. Members prices, dearth of food, plenty of drink options and plenty of pokies and or TAB machines for degeneracy.

Fair enough. Phil Gardner will appreciate your support.
The Jets are happy to see the tailgating idea start, and while I doubt they will give any publicity to Thirsty Messiah because of a commercial agreement they have with Modus in Merewether, they will be happy the supporters are enjoying themselves.

Awesome. It will be great to catch up again Boz. It should be a great family thing! Some ideas thrown around were to use the time to create some banners. I might approach Inspiration Paints to see they want to be involved. Maybe get some face painting for the kids.

As far as I have been able to tell, the carpark is not an alcohol free zone. It may become one though once the Council and Police realise it's potential as a pre-game gathering spot.
The council has a general ban on drinking out of glass in public, but I can't see an issue with bringing your own spirits.

Cheers Furns. I like getting the negative feedback just in case I haven't thought of any pitfalls. It is why I posted the idea on here.
There is a lot of negativity bred through years of mediocrity. Hopefully this is a new start. Not sure how easy it will be to change people around but I think it is worth giving the club a good, positive go this season.

I'll explain things here. Active support is being rebranded as the squadron this year but it will be literally be the same people that have been active the last few years plus a few more hopefully. We've had a couple meetings with the club already. I attended one :)
Wests is good but it's not a football friendly venue. It only worked for the grand final because the numbers couldn't handle us anywhere else.
