Confirmed teams for this grade? Heard a rumour Valentine entering?

Part of the new change to Promotion / relegation rules out Valentine entering a team.

From now on clubs will be allowed to enter only one side to Football league NPL down to ZL3. Clubs can enter a team into new Zone Football Conference league which essentially replaces third grade for Zl1 and Zl2. Valentine have a NPL side so that is there 1 side, Olympic and Cooks Hill have 2 squads but they are existing squads so they can both enter.

The new changes have been highly debated, controversial to some. They are in now, let's see how it works.

Wonder if Valo could still enter under a slightly different name. eg Valentine juniors etc

Good if they could do something there as it would make 12 teams. But unless those guys went to another club without a team, otherwise, it won't happen.

So no confirmed 12th team as yet?
Unless something happens in the next week or is happening behind the scences I can't see a 12th team. Only realistic way of a 12th team is that the Valentine group go to another club and start there.
There options are limited
Belmont is the obvious one
Argenton is probably the next option. South Cardiff could be an option as their club is still split I believe, South Cardiff fc and South Cardiff Community fc. South Wallsend. Jesmond

Or something happens at the Valentine club to make it happen.

As for clubs coming up with a squad with little notice. South Wallsend had 2 higher all age teams last year, that's probably an obvious one.
Maryland Fletcher could work.

Taffy

Options are also limited by any of these clubs wanting a Zone League side as well.

100% correct, big issue moving forward. If clubs can't field multiple squads we need more clubs to take on squads. Otherwise the competition has the ability to loose squads and go backwards. It appears the players are there possibly for at least another team or two.

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker very infrequent poster.

We are scrapping for numbers this year which is really unfortunate. We have a big junior base but just can?t keep the talent for seniors.

I thought I?d put the feelers out there if anyone is looking for a team or just wants to have a kick with a few legends. We will literally take anyone at the moment.

Their first trial match was against West Wallsend this weekend gone. They led 1-0 at the half and ended up losing 3-1. I don?t know what type of side West Wallsend put out though when it?s a week out from their start, plus with 30+ C heat

A lot of talk from merewether United, didn?t pay off

Merewether United are confident they will finish higher then their 7th place last year. I think there is nothing wrong with that.

Last night was a game of 2 halves, Merewether were extremely poor first half and pretty good second half. First half finished 1-1 , which flattered Merewether. Second half was certainly entertaining, 2 big mistakes were punished well by suburbs.

Last 15-20 minutes was all Merewether and we just couldn't find an equaliser despite having a goal disallowed and hitting the post.

Well done to suburbs.

Interesting that in previous posts Slipperyfish you predicted suburbs to finish 1st but not long after the Charlestown loss you said they would struggle? One of the Merewether guys was told last night that Suburbs had 7 players out for the Charlestown game, so it just shows you can't just look at the scoreline. Suburbs will finish top 5, but I think Merewether showed enough at times they will finish higher then then their 7th position last year.

Bring on the competition.

Thanks mate, Team to beat is kurri 100%.They did beat a Zl2 team 8-0 the other week, pretty impressive when Uni ZL1 beat the same team only 1-0 the week before.

Sparre and Pryce left quite a while ago, they have a couple of new additions that were pretty decent last night. A new coach with some new tactics. They will be up towards the top, some good experienced players.

Predictions are always difficult, I see probably 4 or 5 teams that could easily finish 3-8 , the first few rounds will certainly indicate where everyone is at.

Kurri will be hard to beat at home if games are on a Saturday.

Suburbs spent alot of last season without Sparre and Wes, managing to do alright to keep them in the title race until the last few weeks.

I feel that all three zone league divisions have improved dramatically over the last few years with the difference in quality between them shrinking.

I would be happy with that, But there's no way Kurri won't be in the top 4. Charlestown have been in top form in preseason so I would think they would be thereabouts. Suburbs are still in the Cup and only lost last years GF on penalties, They will be thereabouts.

Medowie are a little unknown, but would have had to improve dramatically to challenge top 4.

I saw Medowies starting 11 from this round, 3 blokes I used to play with in 1st grade at Raymond Terrace when the club was on a run of 5GF wins in a row and they were early 20s then, Denis Fajkovic who is still going to be quality at this level and Lez Wallace who scores goals for fun. That?s not a bad start in the improvement department.

Well as long as we are all being transparent, I would suggest whoever is playing at Kurri to request an actual referee from the respective association be appointed.
I know 2 people whose careers have been ended playing against Kurri at Kurri with a club ref that allows Kurri player's to recklessly fly into challenges with no repercussions.

Just trying to give everyone a heads up. But you do you.

Never any good seeing careers ruined over bad challenges. I cant speak on things in the past I can only speak on what I?ve seen since I?ve been involved and I?ve seen our club referees send off numerous Kurri players. We have a new club referee this year whose soul purpose is to referee. He is also doing another club in the same division.
I wasnt trying to make out like our club referees are perfect. I just dont necessarily agree that an 11 year old should be officiating a senior match.
Thanks for the feedback anyway and Ill pass it on to the necessary people and make sure that people coming to our ground feel like they are given a fair go.

If someone is being a clubbie for two clubs, why don?t they just join the association and do it officially?

Got a local game at the Terrace yesterday! Whoever does the pitch curation needs to be sub-contracted out to every other club! Looked like it didn't even have a cm of mud on it. As for the game, not sure of the end scoreline, but it was big to Medowie even after being down to 10-man after 30 mins. I left the ground at 8-2. Very entertaining footy

A handful of Merewether players were involved with Garden Suburb before a few selfish individuals at Garden Suburb kicked out 80 odd people from the club. It tore a community away from what brought them all together.

I don't think there is much spite between the two playing groups, but there is still a lot of resentment towards committee members still involved with Garden Suburb.

I think all involved with Merewether including myself were extremely surprised the game was off, we were ready to play especially after a dominant win midweek.

Yes, there were a couple of players unavailable. But for us that happens every week, we have built a decent squad so even if 6 first graders were out we would still be confident of a result.

But the facts were there was rain at Myamblah last night and anyone that is familiar with the ground knows it doesn't take much to turn it into a mud pit.

Being midway through it's an appropriate time to predict the final standings

1. Croatia
2. Suns
3. Kotara
4. University
5. Cardiff
6. Mayfield
7. Swansea
8. Warners Bay
9. Olympic
10. Stockton
11. Westlakes
12. Azzurri

Croatia are just too hot to catch. The addition of Cowburn has essentially cemented the clubs place in NL1 next season. Will be interesting how they go about creating youth sides to be NPL eligible... also heard that they'll be playing out of Waratah near the Croat club next season? If true, it would help with youth recruitment with the lack of PYL clubs in the north-west Newcastle/Mayfield area, and could also entice youth players from Medowie/Stockton.

There is undoubtedly a clear top 6. Uni, Mayfield and Cardiff will be battling for the last two finals spots, which is going to be very unfortunate for the one that misses out they, all deserve a go at finals football.

I've tipped Azzurri to go down, they deserve it. I wouldn't be surprised if they BS relegation by pipping wins against Westlakes and Stockton, all three clubs just can't match it with the big guns.
I'm assuming you mean Wickham? I doubt Hamilton Hawks Rugby Club will be willing to give up their grounds to Newcastle Croatia during the winter.

I would think that Greta and Kurri are the only 2 teams in the main race for promotion. It would take both of them , especially Greta to slip up for anyone else to catch them.

Zone League 3 is probably getting back to what it probably should look like in last couple of years. Plenty of good, solid sides but there certainly is no gun sides of the past like Argenton, Azzurri, Croatia, Crabs or Southern United that were way too good for most of the competition.

I hope this is true. Terrace have a great history in zone league and will be great to see them back. Lochinvar and Muswellbrook are two areas underrepresented.

I wonder if anyone is dropping out, hopefully not

Good to hear of interest from a few prospective clubs.

Muswellbrook would be competitive straight up I believe given they were pretty decent a few years back in both grades.

Lochinvar are an unknown proposition to me, interesting.

Raymond Terrace had quite a good proactive committee three years ago when they were last in Zone league 3. Great facilities, Good set-up for football. If they can sort out the numbers and look at it for multiple years it could work.

Good thing about ZL3 is any club can have a crack at grade, only need 1st & ressies & if it doesnt last no real worries just as long as they put a full season in.

Barnsley v Merewether

Only 3 minutes of play possible before the game was abandoned. Could take your pick of Hail, Lightning or a flooded pitch for the reason the game was stopped.

Hard to see everyone getting these games played within the normal season, with more rain predicted this week.

With all these prospective clubs. Would NF be open to a 14 team ZL3 or is that asking too much? I believe in giving every club a chance, what is the point on keeping ZL3 "exclusive" to 12 if theres possibility for more teams.

What about a two conference system for a 14 game season. 1 game vs the entire table (13) + 1 game vs teams in your conference (6). 19 games. That might be doing too much

I think it's too many teams to be honest in a division. I think getting one more team will take the Zone to 36 teams. That will be three divisions of 12 teams, which will be ideal.

Apart from that, get 3 more teams and have 10, 10, 10 and 8. Always rumours of multiple team's joining but let's wait and see when the nominations come in.

NL1 only has 10 teams. Theres room in the pyramid for 3 more teams. Makes sense as then every comp has 12 teams, 22 game seasons

Sounds good in theory to me, probably a good question for ZL1 clubs and NNSW Football ( As the increase of clubs will be more clubs entering into their run competitions).

Would be better to see Kurri be promoted into ZL2 with Greta seeing as Azzurri are reportedly finished. Mayfield don't deserve to stay up and having Kurri is better than a bye.

Top 2 are set. Medowie and Merewether to battle it out for next 2 spots.
5th spot I think Charlestown will get it. They have had some good results lately and have the squad if fit.

Greta 4-3 over merewether, Greta very clinical finishing almost every chance that came there way. Merewether had a few go begging. Charlestown 1-0 over Kurri. Makes for an exciting contest on Saturday, both games between them have ended in draws this season

Definitely felt like we (merewether) should have had the game wrapped up in the first 30 minutes. Not great that we lost a player to a disolated shoulder for the rest of the season to a unnecessary incident.

Credit to Greta for getting the win.

Charlestown will walk over Merewether no offence. Just my opinion they need to stop getting involved in social media fights and focus on football. Charlestown has gone about their business fairly quietly, the way to do it.

Merewether are 100% focused on this Saturdays game. Internally the team has gone about their business, irrespective of any outside noise.

I?m tipping a reserve grade win and a first grade loss. Greta to do the double.

Charlestown 2-1 Greta

This game could either go two ways.
Either way Greta will come out firing and take the game to Charlestown.

The first scenario, Greta will put too much pressure on Charlestown, they will concede some goals due to the pressure and they will go on and win the game reasonably comfortably by a couple of goals.

Second Scenario, Charlestown will hang on early and hold out the pressure. They will hit Greta on the counter. In this scenario it will be close and could go either way.

Im tipping Greta 3-1 , They are a big , intense team and when the momentum is on their side, it is hard to stop. Greta are dangerous of all set pieces. They are the fresh after having a decent run in compared to Charlestown who have played alot more games of late.

Either way, hopefully it's a good game.

I got the margin correct, I always thought Greta would win the game. First goal was off a corner, I thought that was an area they would have an advantage in.

Overall, Charlestown can be proud of their efforts. They had a real good run towards the finals. They really needed to take their chance in the first half, but that's football.

Well done to both teams

They've been trying to claim a ZL3 spot the last few years after they left the comp. I'm wondering why it has taken so long for them to have rumoured to finally been accepted. All the other teams would be dreading that away trip, almost as bad as Southern

Once they were knocked back and then they were offered a spot 2 or 3 weeks before comps started.
