First competitive match under the Mark Milligan era this Wednesday night. Anyone go to the Edgy game to give some insight into formations?

This is Gardiner's Newcastle Herald coverage which gives some solid insights

We watched Mark Milligan's first game in Newcastle, here's what we noticed
By James Gardiner

The latest was a 3-0 victory over a well organised and disciplined Edgeworth Eagles at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Tuesday night.

The goals - two to Kota Mizunuma and one to Daniel Wilmering - all came in the second half.

It was the Jets' first game game under Milligan in front of home fans

Here are five things we learned.

NEW BALL GAME
If the opening 20 minutes against the Eagles are an indication, the Jets will be armed with a new, aggressive, fast-paced game. They were on the front foot from the first minute. They pressed high and chased hard. With the ball, the first instinct was to play forward. There were constant runs and rotations. Being so early in preparations, it was clunky at times, but the intent was evident. When they turned the ball over, they fought like alley cats to win it back. Fullbacks, Daniel Wilmering in particular, bombed forward, while the centre-backs held a high line.

CLASSY KOTA
Kota Mizunuma helped turn the Jets' fortunes around when he arrived during the January transfer window last season. His crossing and accuracy from set pieces added a new dimension and sparked a seven-game unbeaten run. The Japanese international looks set to have an even greater influence this season. His English has improved, and so have his combinations. The 35-year-old had an immediate impact when injected into the game for the second half. Deployed initially on the right wing, he was moved more central for the final 20 minutes. He finished with two goals and could easily have had a couple of assists.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Kosta Grozos is back in midfield, and boy, did he look far more comfortable. The captain took one for the team last season and played predominantly at centre back. They won't be happening under Milligan. Grozos and Lachie Bayliss played a half each at the base of midfield in a 4-3-3 formation. Edgeworth sat fairly deep in the second half, and Grozos had plenty of time on the ball. It's an area where the Jets are a little thin, and it wouldn't surprise me if Milligan looks to add depth before the season kicks off.

SELECTION QUANDARY
It is of little surprise that Milligan is yet to nail down a starting XI a week out from the Australia Cup clash with Adelaide. With Noah James (knee) injured, James Delianov is a lock in goals as is the back four - Wilmering, Mark Natta, Aleks Susnjar and Tom Aquilina. Grozos or Bayliss will anchor the midfield. Then it gets interesting. Recruits Max Burgess and Alex Badolato produced touches of class. Eli Adams is short of a run but found space and was a constant threat as was Mizunuma. The wildcards are Oscar Fryer, Will Dobson and youth team duo Xaver Bertoncello and Ollie Cockle.

JURY OUT
It's hard to get a gauge on the strength of the Jets' defence this early. The Eagles didn't have a lot of possession. Most of their attack was from transition moments. What the Jets had to do, they did well. Aleks Susnjar had a virus and didn't play. Experience Dundee United stopper Joe Shaughnessy is expected in the country this week. Youth team centre-back Garang Arou cleaned up everything in the first half. Natta turned over a bit of possession when trying to make penetrative passes but was otherwise solid. Max Cooper, another emerging player, was also impressive.

Mark Milligan wanted a test against Edgeworth, and that is exactly what the Jets coach got, with the A-League side forced to work hard for a 3-0 victory in a preseason friendly at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Tuesday night.

All three goals came in the second half courtesy of a brace to Kota Mizunuma and a rare strike from left back Daniel Wilmering.

The Eagles were hard to break down, and when they did falter, keeper Ben Conway was up to the task.

They stayed compact, blocked passing channels, tracked runners and got a foot in when needed.

The Eagles have conceded just 12 goals in the NNSW NPL - the best in the league - and they held firm for 48 minutes on Tuesday night.

The injection of Japanese international Mizunuma at half-time for the Jets, combined with a tiring defence, opened the game up for the 1000 fans.

"It was a very good test," Milligan said. They were very disciplined. First and foremost, we are very appreciative of them for having us. It probably means more to us than them at the moment. They are still in season.

"It was a good hit out. First half we had some challenges that we haven't explored as a team. It is important they feel that and try to find solutions.

"It was a good response in the second half. Everyone who came on did well.

It will be a tough week for myself leading into the Adelaide [Australia Cup] game with selections."

A rare Conway error in the 48th minute, spilling a low shot, gave Mizunuma the chance to break the deadlock.

Fellow replacement Ben Gibson reacted quickest turned turned the ball to Mizunuma to lift a shot into an open net.

The Jets were on top and Wilmering doubled the lead in the 55th minute, with a stinging effort from the edge of the penalty box.

Mizunuma, who switched to a more central role for the final 20 minutes, sealed the win just before full-time.

He had a fierce shot blocked and the ball ballooned up in the air for him to nod into the corner.

The Jets pressed hard, especially early, and pinned Edgeworth at their own end in the opening 20 minutes.

The more the game progressed, the more settled the home side became.

Chris Fayers and Andrew Pawiak got through a power of work in midfield, while Aaron Oppedisano was up and down the right touchline.

"I thought we were pretty resilient," Edgeworth coach Pete McGuinness said. "It was about giving them a game. They need match preparation for their Cup game. The whole of Newcastle can get behind them now.

"They have some quality. We set up to make it hard for them to break us down. I'm proud of the boys."

Youth team defender Garang Arou cleaned up well at the back for the Jets, while Max Burgess, Eli Adams and Xavier Bertoncello were threatening without delivering a killer blow.

Lachie striker (hamstring tightness), Aleks Susnjar (virus) and Clayton Taylor (groin) didn't play.

Cheers for the post, Mark.

Suspect from reading that article the starting line up could look like:

Delianov

Aquilina - Susnjar - Natta - Wilmering

Grozos

Bayliss - Badolato

Burgess - Gibson - Fryer

Subs - GK, Arou, Mizunuma, Adams, Dobson, Bertoncello, Nunes

I agree with James Gardiner in that we're short in the holding/ box-to-box midfield role. I also think we're a full back either side and a striker short - but the emergence of Bertoncello could be interesting.

I took the young-fella out to Maito on Sunday morning for the open training session..

I think you could be right about that sort of lineup, Jeterpool.. Although I don't know if Natta will be next to Susnjar.. They seemed to have like the whole "1sts vs reserves" style of two teams doing all the drills, and it definitely looked like more of the regular starters were on one team, with Natta on the other. Who knows..

Some other points/things noticed:
- Not sure who the assistant coach is, but he was bloody great getting around with his instructions and barking orders (constructively) to the boys.. Very quick and intense stuff, lots of pressing and chasing down of the ball..
- Clayton and Lachie Rose were out the back doing their own session, mainly light running, due to their coming back from surgery/injury..
- Fryer looks very sharp, definitely excited to see him out on the pitch.. (Although from a distance, he looks a LOT like Gibson, probably just the hair)
- Where is Noah James at the moment? Didn't see him at the ground
- Burgess looked alright.. Lots of smiles from him and Grozos throughout the session
- Everyone was loving on Kota

Thats about all that comes to mind atm..

Well, the season, and the Mark Milligan era, officially kick off tonight.

Here are Adelaide's transfer movements in the off season:

Ins: Craig Goodwin, Julian Kwaaitaal (returns from loan at FC Eindhoven), Joey Garuccio (scholarship contract), Sotirios Phillis (scholarship contract), Vinko Stanisic (scholarship contract)

Outs: Isaias (retired), Javi Lopez (retired), Ryan Tunnicliffe, Josh Cavallo, Jordan Elsey, James Delianov, Zach Clough

Clough is really the only starter they've lost. Clough, Isaias and Javi Lopez started their last match (the Elimination Final loss to Western United). Elsey, Delianov were on the bench.

Archie Goodwin should be back from his injury.

Essentially, they still have quite a strong squad with the core of their starters.

Considering we’re missing 4 guaranteed starters in Rose, Taylor, Adams and Shaughnessy I’m pretty chuffed with that performance. All of their big moments came through Wilmering **** ups so replace him with someone better and it would have been a shut out

I agree Adelaide were most threatening down our left side.

But the nutmeg from Wilmering on Yull before the second goal was filthy.

I was very impressed with the Youth team players who stepped in last night. I thought Bertoncello was strong and energetic, while Max Cooper had a very strong match.

I was also impressed with Badolato and Burgess, while Gibson worked really hard and finished his goal nicely. The number of shots to those on target was low (22 to 5) but it's early in pre-season and the number of opportunities created are encouraging.

Encouraging signs, I?d like a bit more experience in the the midfield before season the season starts

I?m interested once we get Taylor, Adams and Rose back who the third person from this team will be to move to the bench. Obviously Gibson and Bertoncello won?t be starting, but the third person will be someone starting XI quality. I?d personally go for Taylor to still start, if only because his contract is ending this season, so ideally he can get some quality minutes in before the January window where we can make a solid profit off of him.

I also think we need someone in the midfields a little more defensively minded. Badalato and Bayliss are great players, but honestly I?d prefer Grozos or a new signing to come in to slot in to next either of them in that 6 role and help hold down the midfield, especially with our high press style to have a little more insurance.
