has been ages since I've solidly read for fun & not just for uni. just started to get back in the swing of things.

recently finished Football Against the Enemy by Simon Kuper. was a really good read, had some insightful things about the general world of football & the politics surrounding it all.

am now reading Reg Date - The Don Bradman of Football by Peter Allen. am sure I'll be way more newy after doing so.

I've found when obtaining standards from newcat, then putting them on works server, after a few weeks/months the standard "expires" and green-screens. re-obtaining it solves the issue, for the next lot of time. is this a common thing?

Yes. It depends on the licence the "supplier" has but they do expire after a time. Sort of like loaning a library book.

If I know I'll need it often I just print it and save chasing the copy again. But that's pretty rare.

Soccernomics.

Very very good.

I finished it on the weekend. It was really good. I chose to simply read it instead of critically analysing the statistical methodologies they applied.

It is a must read for anyone who has read Moneyball or simply wants a deeper understanding on football or wants to look at football in a different way.

It was a good one to read a bit, leave for a while and come back to - I read a fiction book inbetween it.

Picked up "Mad For It" to read now. Again, it'll be a good book to read a chapter and leave while I read the next fiction book.

Finally reading 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. Been sitting on the shelf for ages but with all the hype around the movie decided to pick it up.
Funnily, mates of mine who read it take something out of it completely different to what I'm getting.
Either way some good lessons in there for anyone interested in business.

Also: complete works of the Far Side. Had purchased most of the collections over the years but lost them/loaned them out etc. the Mrs got me the 2 volume set recently (bless her). Each book weighs about legit 5kg. Still makes me larf though.

Tower series is good. books 1-3-5 are so far standouts the fusion of Western, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and quest are really well done and King has ensured to not have too many discrepancies. It also crosses into different King realms such as Salems lot and The Stand. If you're a King fan you'll enjoy these stories.

At the start of December I was in NZ and visited Hobbiton (and coincidentally ran into Merry & Pippin IRL). Apparently the day (or week) before, Martin did a tour of the place. And all the visitors, workers, etc who recognised him just hounded him to stop fxxxing around with holidays & go write some more :rof:

Currently reading Moneyball. Gtfo Michael Bridges :rof:

Over my holiday period I read:
- I am the Secret Footballer (check an upcoming zine for review)
- Dennis Bergkamps new book (amazing, unreal, etc)
- The Hobbit (hadn't read since primary school, felt the need to do so after watching the newest movie)

I got probably a quarter of the way (which, in fairness, is a long way because it's such a long book) through Inverting the Pyramid Gaz. It was pretty heavy. I'll pick it up again some later time, but I think just because I'd started reading it after reading two football books, plus just the content the way it is, I couldn't read any more. Some killer thoughts/insights so far though!

I'm reading Inverting the Pyramid as well as I try to only read one book at a time. I'm finding it good but pretty heavy as well, I'm about a quarter in as well

Before that I read Life of Pi because I liked the movie. Its pretty good if that's your type of thing, its not that fast moving though and very reflective. I also read The Manager: Inside the Minds of Football's Leaders by Mike Carson. Its got some good insight from top managers like Mourinho, Wenger and Ferguson.

Well written but probably popular due to the underdog element. I usually read all of Michael Lewis' articles in Vanity Fair.

Anyone else read this? I legit can't believe some of the stats (particularly goals scored per game) in there. Date was a freak.
So much lol, especially the parts about his knee, punting and boxing

I'm reading Inverting the Pyramid as well as I try to only read one book at a timeA great historical resource, I reckon the best football book there is.

After I finish that i'll start Fever Pitch You'll like this, all football fans inevitably see a bit of themselves in the protagonist.

Books i’ve read since uni has been over;

Black Swan by Nassim Taleb - on probability, predictions and epistemology

Capitalism and Freedom by Uncle Miltie - a philosophical treatise against coercive power

Atomized by Michel Houellebecq - on sex in an individualised society

Self Made Man by Norah Vincent - about allocated gender identity, some succinct points well articulated but a poor conclusion

Open Society and Its Enemy by Sir Karl Popper - a take down of plato and marx (good enough to influence soros, good enough to influence me)

The Beast by Oscar Martinez - about central american migrants, their hardships and ingenuity

The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht - on death and family

This isn't an attempted stab at Manure fans or anything of the like..

I'm currently about 3/4 of the way through SAF's book. Man, I'm finding it so poorly written.

He'll write one sentence that brings up say Djemba Djemba, then he'll have 2-3 paragraphs on complete waffle that don't relate to anything, then he'll write almost the exact same sentence about Djemba Djemba as if he'd never derailed from that thought, but also as if the second sentence gives some form of insight that he hadn't already brought up.

It feels like SAF is holding back a lot of the views and thoughts he really wants to say about people and situations, and it just ends up that he basically says nothing at all.

For every interesting insight I get from reading this book, there's about 2 pages of pure garbage.

Coming off the back of reading Dennis Bergkamp's and Zlatan's books, which I consider to be two of the better football books I've ever read, this SAF book is an actual chore to get through.

After finishing SAF's book, I wouldn't recommend it to many people. It was poorly written and didn't offer the insights that I was hoping it would. It was like he restrained himself from giving his real views on most events and people, and it turned out in the end the book felt empty. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed Vieira's book, which was pretty little compared to other football books I've read.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Moaning of Life, as it's not a giant book, but I've loved it. Pilkington is very dry, but extremely funny with his writing - even though he doesn't attempt to be funny. Highly recommend to anyone - and I'll be making a better effort to get ahold of his shows now.

Phoebe Moloney wrote an article about the singles scene (https://www.newcastleherald.com.au/story/6344458/no-touching-without-consent-singles-event-puts-women-on-notice-after-men-complain/) with an enticing headline ('No touching without consent': Singles event puts women on notice after men complain).

As I don't live in Newy, I don't have a subscription to the paper. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

I don't have a subscription but the first line says - "A message to women in their 40s to 60s" - say no more. Drunk old ducks cackling after one two many rieselings in their little gangs chasing toy boys to make them feel better while the old man is at home watching the cricket.
