This is a really important game in my opinion

Coasties and Wellington away will be really difficult to take 6/6 points... even though in feb we have 3/4 games at home.. id rather be with the pace of the pack rather than leave it to late as we have done quite often now

Jade North isnt elegible for selection until the 14th so he wont be making a return to Newy... yet

Ive read Heskey and Zadkovich are in doubt,, thoughts on who will be the "stand in, stand in" captain?

Heskey, Neville, Wheelhouse and Zadko all named in the 18 man provisional squad. No Ritter or Mitchell due to injury. And oddly, Tiago isn't even mentioned in the "unavailable" list...

Newcastle Jets squad: 1. Ben Kennedy 2. Scott Neville, 7. James Brown 8. Ruben Zadkovich, 9. Emile Heskey, 11. Connor Chapman, 12. Josh Brillante, 13. Sam Gallaway 14. Taylor Regan 15. Craig Goodwin, 16. Jobe Wheelhouse 17. James Virgili, 18. Jacob Pepper, 19. Michael Bridges 20. Mark Birighitti, 22. Adam Taggart, 23. Ryan Griffiths, 25. Mitch Cooper.

I am starting to question why we have overseas players in our team. We rarely seem to recruit any that are good, and if they seem to be, they appear to have a fall out or don't play like we think and don't get played as a result.

I see maybe 1 international getting retained next year, and that's if the bloke decides he want's to stay with us!

Always been a fan of "If they're good enough, they're old enough" Plus, as others have said, if Tiago and Mitchell are the other options I'd rather Regan and Chapman partnered in the centre. If gary wants to get rid of Regan (which I don't want, but it seems like the thing gary wants) then hopefully he puts Ritter in the middle with Chapman.

I'm thinking of having a hiatus from the jets for 2 years then come back when the kids are grown up and gve has retired due to high blood pressure caused by shit visa recruits, but then I wouldn't be a true supporter so i suppose I'll keep suffering.
On our visa player problems maybe we could just confine ourselves to well known players and players that have experience with other teams in the a league, players like gui finkler and a like.

gve has made some good acquisitions but he 'cooked the engine' with his youth policy. At least an average seasoned veteran (topor) can hold a position unlike a dodgy youth player.

Starting line up http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/newcastlejets/news-display/Starting-XI-Jets-v-Roar/58017

The Newcastle Jets have made a surprise change to their starting line-up for their Round 16 match against Brisbane Roar at Hunter Stadium.

Jobe Wheelhouse returns from a knee injury and has been named on the bench.

Newcastle Jets starting XI: 7. James Brown 8. Ruben Zadkovich (c), 11. Connor Chapman, 12. Josh Brillante, 13. Sam Gallaway 14. Taylor Regan 15. Craig Goodwin, 17. James Virgili, 20. Mark Birighitti (gk), 23. Ryan Griffiths, 26. Andrew Hoole.
Bench: 1. Ben Kennedy (gk), 16. Jobe Wheelhouse, 19. Michael Bridges, 22. Adam Taggart.

I'll give Hoole some credit, he was shaky for the first 10 mins or so, but picked himself up to have a pretty solid game. I was worried for a while he would put his head down, but he didn't which was great to see.

Great to see Brown build on last weeks performance and put in another good one. Obviously starting to find his feet.

Surely now though, Regan has cemented his spot in the team.

All up, not a bad night at the football, although I could have done without the final 10 minutes. Two clean sheets in a row as well.

The back 7 were brilliant tonight. Birra with some great saves, both fullbacks doing their thing, Chapman and Regan fantastic and Zadko and Brilliante in front also brilliant. Best moments for me were around the 55 minute mark when Chapman showed some brilliant reading of the game and cleaned up a dangerous bit of attacking play and something 10 minutes later by Brilliante.

I sit in the western stand and I honestly think how loud the squadron sounds is dependant on the wind direction. In a strong NE irrespective of how filled the bay is, it can be hard to hear.

Tonight was clear, but I wouldn't say its the loudest I have heard them.

Really, the stadium doesn't lend itself to keeping the sound in, so if the wind is blowing the wrong way the squadron can be hard to hear.

I don't know if I would say he is the most popular. However, I don't think you can say much about his performance tonight. None of the substitutions really worked. In fact, they were all out of position. I don't understand why Taggart was on the left with Bridges upfront. He did better last week when he replaced Brown and played as attacking midfield, a role he said he was much more suited to nowdays.

Good entertaining game, happy we won given the pressure toward the end, but the defence were really well organised and it always felt like the Roar would have to do something remarkable to break them down.

With Hooley's debut last night, once again a local has proved that he is good enough to play at this level.
There has been a lot of negatives this season but for me I think we are finally after 8 seasons seeing local lads show that they are just as good....if not better than "bigger name" signings. At the start of the season who would have predicted Virgili to play so many games this season and be one of the most improved players in the HAL?
Gallaway (even though he is not a local, he is a NNSW product) also, has gone from being almost forgotten to being a first XI player the past month and winning supporters over.
Regan was #5 in the pecking order for CB's just a few weeks back, has come back in the side the last 2 weeks and finally our defensive woes look to be cured. Now Hoole makes an impressive debut at 19 and plays his part in our 2nd cleansheet of the season.
I see a good, strong future for the Jets where the majority of the squad is made up of local players who have the heart and passion for this town, add a few class players from elswehere and a couple of visa players who really do make a difference or have the "x-factor". With the local talent that is in the Youth side I see this happening in the very near future.

Completely agree.

Taggart and Bridges were completely out of position and it showed. I won't read anything into either of their performances. It wouldn't have taken much to shuffle people around and I think they all would have performed better.

Yep plain to see for everyone except gve, only thing I can think of was that griff had run out of legs and wasn't able to track back on the left and help in defence

Blokes a ****ing genius and you question his thinking??

Can't keep clean sheet >> Drop all experienced players and pick kids and 5th choice central defender - Clean Sheet soon ensues

Can't find a decent left back/right back >> Sacks Neville and Ritter and brings in Galloway who carves it up regardless of where he plays.

Matter of fact the reincarnation of Galloway is a stroke of genius and all doubts on the Eggs ability should be dropped for achieving this miracle

Just because some of his ideas don't pan out. Don't ever question his thinking :sparring:

The first half was one of the most enetertaining performances by the Jets in a a very long time.
Myquestion though is why did we get it all together lastnight and yet have looked like complete shit in our other appearances this season ?

My main gripe with GVE has been that he was forcing players to adopt a style beyond their capabilities. Yet last night the passing was slick, the first touches brilliant, and everyone seemed to know what their roles were both on and off the ball.

Well done to GVE for doing what a few weeks ago seemed impossible.

The gypos should be well and truly shitting themselves.

We were organised defensively and we hustled well last night. First half was great football?? I thought football wise we were poor.

We hustled Roar into a few errors and allowed us chances to capitalise deep in their half after their turnovers.

I lost count of how many times we kicked the ball long or away in the first 20 mins when it looked like we had met one another in the car park. We actually looked good for about a 15 min spell in the second half but that all went to water when that hack Bridges come on.

I thought GVE tactically out thought Mulvey.
Our boys also Out fought the Roar players

To say our play was great to watch last night is stretching the truth as it was a long way from GVE's manifesto not withstanding the difficulties one has imposing their style on the Roar with the way they dominate possession

All your points are spot on, just confused why he played Taggart on the wing when he's useless there and after how well he did last week up front. Plus Bridges is a perfect swap for Brown and Griff is a winger. Makes no sense. Taggart was useless in defence, which is fine, cause he's a out and out striker, just don't play him there ffs.

Ps I know you're half-trolling, just needed to rant

the other important factor is that the Roar were diabolically poor and, like our dream run earlier in the season, everything fell for us last night.

I thought we finally had some luck too, eg last 20 minutes, although the ref gave them some favourtism for some reason.

really? how about we finally got neville, ritter and mitchell off the park, put regz back in the centre where he belongs add chapo and some suring up at the back occurs. Goody forsore several passes to intercept, even if his shooting was off, he did ok. Zads all over the park with top class spoiling!!

not saying he hasnt deputised well in Jobeys absence, but need our captain back in mids to add experience and a better range of passing. Plus Zad needs someone to share the yellow card count with.

Great night, Roar were poo though.
Jets showed some passion and got stuck in, well done boyz.
Row Z was outstanding.
Squadron were loud and clear. Loved the "We hate coast scum!" always a favourite.
Only disapointment was GVE being appluaded up the tunnel. One swallow dosen't make a summer.

On another note saw Row Z at the crickters fri nite getting on the punt. He must have known Jets would get up. Will be watching to see next fri nite if he is again getting on the Jets so I can get on as well. I thought we would struggle against the Roar but he must have been confident.
If anyone from FFA is reading this I'm only joking about Rubz punting on the Jets. OK :)

all he does is pass it sideways, leave the team as it is with heskey back in, jobe adds nothing to what we already have, he needs to earn his spot back as he is no walk up start

Sideways??? I call balls passed from Jobe to Birraz and Connor and Taylor backwards.

You must sit in a different bay to the Member???

It was poignant to note that when Jobe come on we were 15 yards inside Roars half and "ATTACKING" and not long later thanks to the guidance of Jobe Birraz was hoofing it up the park. Glad we have been missing that tactic to waste time in recent weeks

the difference in views of how we played between myself and other people (on here & irl) was bugging me heaps, so i attempted to do some stats on the game (thx odf for the upload). i only lasted 30 mins in as it got too depressing for me to keep going, but here are a few specific stats i jotted down after watching the first 30 mins of the game (and holding a pen & paper along with it)

i decided to tally the amount of times we clearly had possession in our back four, and assessed the type of play we attempted from there. the attempts to play out were placed into three categories; attempted long ball (this included long goalkicks, aswell as us attempting to play out, passing it back to biraz & he pumped it long), attempted to play out but lost the ball before we transitioned a positive attack, attempted to play out and kept the ball and turned our possession into a positive attack (by positive attack i mean it was noticeable that we had gotten the ball out of our defence & had moved forward with the ball from there).i counted long throw-ins down the line as attempting to play out, rather than long ball - iirc maybe only one throw turned into positive attack. i should also mention that solely clearances were not considered in these stats, as i was only taking into account the plays when we legitimately had possession in our back four.

long balls attempted - 19
attempted to play out but lost the ball before we transitioned into a positive attack - 9
attempted to play out and kept the ball and turned our possession into a positive attack - 4

at the 27th min, simon hill gave out a stat of successful passes by both teams; newcastle 36, brisbane 103

as stated above, after 30 mins i got over doing these stats.

my opinion of the stats:
- to the people who say "we don't play long balls without heskey" i laugh at your face. we played long balls 19 times, and attempted to play out 13 times (with 4 being successful).
- we suck out playing out
- we can't pass the ball
- none of our positive attack stats actually lead to any form of chance, all of our chances (brown's cross from goodwin's ball, goodwin's shot, griff nearly getting the ball passed to him by theo) came from brisbane turnovers from their own mids/defence.
- wtf have we spent 18 months working towards? a win against roarsenal is always good and a positive, but where dafuq is any remote scrap of existence of our super-football system that we gave gve the entire of last season blame-free for, and have supposedly put all our faith in?

Also, seems I'm a bit of a 'spare drink magnet' for you, eh? lol
