In The Mixer: Fabrizio Miccoli could end up in the A-League, despite penning deal with Lecce

FABRIZIO Miccoli may be an A-Leaguer after all.

The Italian international was in June linked with Melbourne Victory before penning a deal with Lecce in Lega Pro.
But it’s understood the A-League door is not shut for the former Juventus attacking midfielder. Miccoli has scored three goals in four games for Lecce which is rooted to the foot of the table.

SBS has confirmed that David Basheer will call the Friday night A-League games this season.
Experienced play-by-play man Basheer will be joined in the commentary box by a Fox Sports expert as part of the co-calling agreement.

David Zdrilic will host SBS’s pre-game show and will be joined weekly by Craig Foster.
The other spot on the pre-game panel will be rotated among former players, with Ned Zelic and Clint Bolton two names mooted. Lucy Zelic will be SBS’s sideline reporter each Friday night.

WHICH A-League coach doesn’t want to even mention the name of one of his squad members fearing it could lead to another extended period on the sideline for the injury-plagued player? While it was perhaps said in jest, there is no doubting the coach is frustrated with this player’s lack of activity in recent seasons.

THERE was a great tweet from former Melbourne Victory media man Tony Ising in relation to there being more excitement from the club’s supporters about the signing of unproven attacker James Troisi than experienced Chilean international defender Pablo Contreras.

"Defenders win you championships. Attackers win you fans," Ising tweeted.

And he’s spot on. The form of Contreras, capped 67 times for his country, is likely to determine whether the Victory win the title.

NEW Zealand football has riled its soccer community when it tried charging its under 20 side to play for the All Whites at the FIFA under 20 World Cup. Now the federation has reportedly asked parents of the under 17 side which is bound for the FIFA World Cup in the UAE to contribute $2000 towards the trip or they’ll be scrubbed off the list. Australia, however, is not immune. "Elite pathway" kids have been asked in some states to pay their way to interstate tournaments.

In essence if that continues the so called game for the common people is slowly edging towards being a rich persons sport. If federations can’t find enough funding for these projects why don’t they just withdraw from these tournaments? To think the best have been identified only if kids to pay their own way to get there is embarrassing for kids who aren’t able to find the funding.

LLOYD Owusu became the unwitting star of the SA grand final - from his seat in the Coopers Stadium stands last Friday. The former Ghana and Adelaide United striker raised the roof after taking his opportunity when Blue Eagles gloveman Gino DeLucia hacked the ball out of play and into the stands.

Owusu watched the flight of the ball, stood up and headed the ball back in play all of 30m. He finished the move with a Mark Bresciano/Mario Balotelli/Eric Cantona statue-like celebration.

ASTON Villa’s Australian youngsters Tom, 17, and Ryan Strain, 16, have been signed up by Manchester United and England international Rio Ferdinand’s management company. The former Modbury Jets SA juniors moved to England in April 2011 before signing contracts with Villa.

NOW is the time to help clubs that played "fightball" as a way of surviving federation state league football in Australia’s senior ranks this season to say goodbye to the past. With Football Federation Australia releasing the new curriculum on Friday it would be such a great step forward if clubs that play the ‘‘fightball’’ game somehow rid the ancient ‘‘fightball’’ strategy as a master plan for the new season.

For the clubs that have invigorated the game with ‘‘new football’’ thank you for being eye candy during the past season. For the "fightball" clubs who will probably resist change, the new possession game will prevail, get with the times.

Can see it now Basheer & Harper calling Friday nights, FTA viewers wont know what's hit them.

Which teams still have an international marquee spot free, I can only think of Perth and heart, with Adelaide having already said marquees aren't their thing. Would be interesting to see Heart pick him up on a loan deal until Engelaar gets back from injury, but its not really a like for like replacement as far as the FFA would be concerned.

My moneys on Bosschaart & SFC

Gibbs keen to impress for Jets

GROWING up at Narara, Joey Gibbs certainly favoured the Central Coast Mariners in their tense rivalry with the Newcastle Jets. His signing with the Jets earlier this year even raised eyebrows among some of his childhood friends.

But on Sunday the striker will be firmly in the Jets camp as he attempts to use the trial against the Mariners at Tamworth as his launching pad to a spot in the A-League opener against Sydney FC October11.

Marquee striker Emile Heskey’s grade-one tear to the medial ligament in his left knee last week against Melbourne Victory opened the door for Gibbs to either slot in at No.9 or play a wider role.

And the former Western Sydney recruit is determined to kick it down.

‘‘It even comes down to today by just training well in every session and every drill, and I’m trying to do that,’’ he said yesterday.

‘‘Every opportunity, you want to take it. And the Mariners are another opportunity.’’

Gibbs never played for the Mariners, instead joining the Sydney FC youth side before making his A-League debut for the Wanderers last year.

In May he arrived in Newcastle and has completed a full pre-season without missing a beat.

He has played in all the trials and scored in the 3-0 trial win over Northern NSW State League club Weston.

Sunday’s trial at Scully Park will be the final trial against an A-League opponent. But Gibbs also has an intra-club trial tomorrow and another next week to cement his claims.

‘‘I’ve kept quite fit and had no injuries this pre-season. And I guess we’ve been doing things right here, down to the rehab and being professional, which helps,’’ he said.

Though the weekend’s trek to the country music capital is a trial and will lack the importance of a regular F3 derby, Gibbs is expecting the competition to be fierce as the long pre-season reaches a climax.

‘‘Every trial has been a very high tempo, no one has been holding back on the challenges. It just shows everyone is buzzing for the start of the season and we’re no different,’’ he said.

Jets coach Gary van Egmond has been impressed by Gibbs’s work ethic since he arrived in Newcastle but said Adam Taggart was the favourite to replace Heskey at the point against the Sky Blues.

Meanwhile, the Jets have also received positive news on Nathan Burns.

Scans have cleared the former Socceroo of a hamstring tear and he will likely play in the season opener.

‘‘He’s much better than we first thought and it wasn’t actually a tear but a strain,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘Though it was one that could have turned into a tear if we persevered with the game.’’

‘‘So that’s good and we’re pretty confident we’ll get him back for that first game against Sydney.’’

Midfielder James Brown trained strongly yesterday and will likely receive game time in tomorrow’s intra-club trial.

Brown struggled last week and there were fears he could have had complications with his surgically repaired ankle.

Still can't see the sense in signing this bloke.

Heart have replaced Engelar with an Italian bloke (Andrea Migliorini) on an injury replacement already, so they don't have their int marquee spot available.

Clubs that I think don't use international marquees: Pissants, CCM (Flores is in the cap as they're paying less than half of his wages, which MV are still paying), Wellington.

Would also not be surprised if Brisbane could sneak Broich back under the cap somehow. Adelaide may say that marquees aren't their thing, but playing attractive football has never been their thing either & Shrek their new coach wants them playing like Barthelona, so don't be surprised if something would happen there.

Also what the hell is going on with the Miccoli article? All over the shop, felt like 1000 articles in one without any decent transition.

Seems crazy that NZ football are charging families to get their kids to play for their country. If anything, those sorts of tournaments should be when the young kids are introduced into the world of being paid to play. I've played with & against a fair few guys who have played for Australia in Futsal before, and they weren't even that great - but their parents could afford to pay for their trips to actually compete, whereas a lot of better players couldn't and thus rejected the offer to play. This is what this kind of thing is headed towards - not good.

+1 Futsal is all about the rich getting a go. I like you have seen many very, very good young futsal players miss out on playing rep due to the huge financial outlay needed by the parents while some players you wouldn't feed get in due to rich parents. If you want to get into the grit of it then you would also see how poorly futsal is administrated in the Newcastle and Hunter area.

FFA anxious to heal rifts and support club owners

The Football Federation of Australia is hoping to heal its historically fractured relationship with A-League club owners as chief executive David Gallop revealed the governing body's priority next season is relieving the financial pressures placed on owners.

If last season was the year that the A-League broke through into the mainstream of Australian sport, then this year's instalment will see the FFA consolidate its position to maintain increased financial stability.

The new broadcast deal, which will see the game shown live on Fox Sports and SBS has provided the game with a significant cash stream but it is not at the stage when the FFA is willing to explore large-scale projects such as expansion. Gallop says consolidating the financial position this season is essential for the league's development.

''We're certainly moving into a more stable financial environment but we need to be conscious of the huge investment club owners have made in the past and will continue to make,'' Gallop said. ''Ultimately, our number one strategic priority is to alleviate the burden on our private owners, but certainly progress has been made in that area.''

After years of losses up to five clubs are expected to record profits by the end of the season now that the entire salary cap costs will be covered as part of the new broadcast deal and other sponsorships. It is understood that clubs with larger operating costs and those with marquee player wages outside the salary cap will stay in the red.

''There remain potholes in the road financially, but things have drastically improved from previous seasons,'' Gallop said. ''We're moving into an environment for the first time where we've got a number of clubs now being profitable or at least breaking even … that's a long way forward from where they used to be. Club distributions are at a level of matching the top roster cost.

''While there are still player payments outside the top roster, that is significant progress.''

The extra cash flow did not result in another influx of high-profile marquee players such as Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono, but this off-season saw a large number of World Cup hopefuls return to Australia looking for national team selection. It is hoped returning Socceroos Matt McKay, Matthew Spiranovic, James Troisi, Patrick Kisnorbo, Nathan Burns and Michael Zullo will raise the standard of the competition while perhaps not capturing the attention that ''brand'' marquees will.

''Having players come back to the A-League underlines the rise in technical standards across the league as well as the increased financial stability of the competition,'' Gallop said.

The unique nature of A-League supporters has been further acknowledged by the FFA, who will introduce a football specific working group this season. The operation will be implemented with a view to providing security that accounts for the distinctive style of support from active supporter groups such as The Cove of Sydney FC and the Red and Black Bloc of the Western Sydney Wanderers and will involve clubs, police, stadiums and FFA security operations. ''It's now something all our clubs are harnessing,'' Gallop said. ''Our players let our fans know that they respond to that atmosphere. There's a working relationship between our fans and our players that's really turbocharging the season.''

In The Mixer: Aussies beat Manchester United, Jeronimo single again, Berisha's flying fear

IN The Mixer: A couple of young Aussies get one over Manchester United, Jeronimo is single again and Berisha's fear of flying.

ROBBIE Slater is set to be the Fox Sports’ half of the commentary team for this season’s shared coverage of Friday night A-League matches.’ The former Socceroo is expected to provide the expert comments to complement the play-by-play call from SBS commentator David Basheer. Friday night matches will be shown live on SBS2 and Fox Sports. While the match commentary will be a co-production, each broadcaster will have their own pre-match, half-time and post-match programs. Fans of Brenton Speed should not despair. 'Speedo', who last season combined with Slater on Friday night, will still call at least one match a weekend for Fox Sports.

FOX Sports’ football coverage will also include new program - Santo, Sam & Ed’S Total Football.

Santo Cilauro, Ed Kavalee and Sam Pang will host the show each Monday night, with the focus not only on the A-League, but other light-hearted incidents from around the football world.

BRISBANE Roar striker Besart Berisha isn’t a fan of flying at the best of times so there was no chance he was going to board a small plane to be part of the new Fox Sports’ A-League promo.

Berisha was supposed to be one of the two Roar players used in the promo that was recently filmed in the barren surrounds of Parachilna, South Australia. It’s understood that Roar marquee man Thomas Broich was also a late withdrawal. So in the end, Brisbane was represented by defender Jade North and Irish playmaker Liam Miller, who were joined by Melbourne Victory pair Mark Milligan and Archie Thompson.

JERONIMO Neumann told In the Mixer he is a single man again. Jeronimo was in a relationship with Barbarita Vila. Barbi as she likes to be called came to Adelaide with Jeronimo from Argentina last year.

"She decided to go back to Argentina," Jeronimo said.

"For the first month it was very hard, that was some months ago so, now I feel very good.

"Now I’m single, I go out with my friends and teammates.

"But it’s different."

Barbi specialised in salsa, funk, ballet and Latin jazz. Her father Daniele Vila is one of Mendoza’s most popular wine merchants.

ASTON Villa’s SA-born youngsters Tom and Ryan Strain celebrated a 3-1 win by scoring all three goals in against Manchester United last weekend. Ryan opened the score before his brother Tom scored a brace at the Bodymoor Heat Training Ground. It was Man U academy first loss of the season.

GUUS Hiddink has been mooted as the man to lead the Socceroos – AGAIN- in the New Year.

But Football Federation Australia should consider this if it pushes Holger Osieck out before the start of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Although Hiddink did quite well for the Socceroos when the nation made it to the second round and lost to Italy in Germany in 2006, World Cup coaching comebacks is likened to booking a date for disaster.

Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi is the prime example of a comeback gone wrong. Lippi was summoned back to the Azzurri after former boss Roberto Donadoni led Italy to a dismal quarter-final exit at EURO 2008. Lippi at the 2010 World Cup then led Italy to an embarrassing last place in their group in South Africa. But he’s not the only one that’s failed the second time around.

Argentina’s Alfio Basile failed when he got the gig again. He was forced to quit after a shock World Cup qualifying loss to Chile. Brazil’s Tele Santana and Carlos Alberto Parreira struggled the second time and current boss Felipe Scolari is on a hiding to nothing after he won the World Cup for the Selecao in 2002.

ADELAIDE Oval are proposing to host the Rolling Stones next year after the SA government spent $530 million on upgrading the facility which Australian Rules and cricket will earn benefits from. But what about football! Where does that sit given its taxpayers money spent on the upgrade? Now if the old rockers were to perform at Adelaide Oval perhaps the SA government might put the Socceroos on as a curtain raiser seeing that every time the question ‘‘when are you going to give SA a worthy international football clash?’’ the response is ‘‘we’re working on it."

But think of the benefits of having the Stones and the Socceroos together.
Imagine this. The Stones in 1972 recorded the smash hit Tumbling Dice when gloveman Mark Schwarzer was born. And six years later when skipper Lucas Neill was born the Stones had the hit ‘Respectable.’

It would make for a great night’s entertainment don’t you think Stones and Socceroos (just kidding). Seriously SA government when are you going to give the state’s soccer fans a fair go?

INTENSE: Zenon Caravella and Josh Brillante clash during a Jets intra-club trial at Ray Watt Oval on Thursday. Picture: Ryan Osland

JETS skipper Ruben Zadkovich welcomed a feisty confrontation between midfield rivals Josh Brillante and Zenon Caravella during an intra-club trial on Thursday, saying it was exactly the type of intensity he wanted to see.

In the final hit-out before next Friday’s A-League season opener against Sydney, tempers flared when Caravella, playing in Newcastle’s first-choice team, clattered into Brillante in a dubious first-half challenge.

The players exchanged words and Caravella pushed Brillante before veteran Michael Bridges stepped in to separate them.

Zadkovich said there would be no hard feelings between the players and felt it was a good sign that there was so much competition for positions in Newcastle’s squad.

‘‘That’s something that happens nearly every day in professional football,’’ Zadkovich said.

‘‘You have opposing players – they’re teammates and the best of friends but they’re fighting for the same position and sometimes it gets heated, like it did today. To be honest, I quite like seeing that sometimes.

‘‘I like seeing that fight and that aggression and that mongrel. They’re both great guys, stand-up guys, and they’ll be joking about it for the next two or three days, I reckon.’’

The captain’s comments were echoed by Jets coach Gary van Egmond.

‘‘They got a bit restless but that’s nice because they care,’’ he said.

‘‘There’s no problems with that.

‘‘That gets sorted pretty quickly and they’ll go and have a Fanta with each other at the launch today,’’ van Egmond said.

Yesterday’s trial was a scoreless affair despite James Virgili, Adam Taggart and Nathan Burns hitting the woodwork for the ‘‘A’’ team.

Van Egmond was far from disappointed by the lack of goals; he said defence was a priority for them during the pre-season.

‘‘We conceded 45 goals last year and you’re not going to win any championship by conceding so many goals,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s good that in the last five games, we’ve had one goal scored against us, and that was from a set piece.

‘‘It’s very pleasing.’’

Zadkovich said it was no surprise that the trial was a deadlock.

‘‘When you train against people every day, you start to work out their strengths and their weaknesses,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s a lot harder to score against our own players than it is against other teams. It’s always the way.

‘‘It just shows that defensively we’re quite sound.’’

He said the Jets were eager to play for competition points for the first time in six months.

‘‘The pre-season games, there’s a lot of them, and the pre-season is so long it can get a little bit mundane,’’ he said.

‘‘It was nice that we had some diehard supporters here today [at Ray Watt Oval]. I think that gives everyone a bit of a lift.

‘‘We’re all looking forward to playing in front of big crowds and that first game is going to be pretty special ... it can’t come soon enough.’’

Striker Michael Bridges was replaced at half-time as a precautionary measure.

‘‘He has a slight [groin] strain,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘We should know more about that tomorrow but all the indications are that he should be OK.’’

Van Egmond’s starting 11 yesterday was: Mark Birighitti, Sam Gallaway, Connor Chapman, Kew Jaliens, Scott Neville, Zadkovich, Caravella, Craig Goodwin, Virgili, Bridges and Taggart.

Emile Heskey says young Newcastle Jets have bright future

Sunday 6 October 2013

Emile Heskey in action for Newcastle last season. Photograph: Tony Feder/Getty Images
Roger Sleeman

It's a long way from the sold out stadiums of the Premier League to the sedate atmosphere of the A- League but for Emile Heskey one of English football's most famous journeymen, Newcastle, Australia, is the place he now calls home.

The English summer of 2012 was a watershed in Heskey's career as he faced the daunting prospect of finding new employment after Aston Villa failed to renew his contract, despite interest from Championship clubs.

Fortunately, a new opportunity emerged in the guise of his former England and Liverpool team-mate, Robbie Fowler, who suggested a stint in the A-League would rejuvenate Heskey's career.

"Robbie Fowler contacted me and said there were some very good players in the A-League while Michael Bridges spoke in glowing terms of this growing League," recalls Heskey "After finally speaking to Dwight Yorke, I decided to accept Newcastle Jets' two year offer."

Heskey's first season was productive as he scored nine goals in 23 matches for the Jets and was looking forward in anticipation to the new season.

However the fairytale temporarily halted two weeks ago when Heskey strained knee ligaments against Melbourne Victory in a pre-season match which will see him absent for the first three rounds.

"At first I didn't think it was bad but the x-ray revealed a grade two strain which was devastating because all you want is to be out on the field with your team-mates to win games and maximise points in the early rounds.

"Critically, you have to remain positive and know you will recover, remembering if you didn't suffer injuries, you'd be a pretty remarkable competitor in any sport."

When footballers are forced to take the count, there is always time to reflect on past deeds and although Heskey has assistance from the Jets physio staff to rehabilitate, he will still ponder his 19 years in professional football.

There were, of course, times in his career when Heskey received less than favourable publicity because his finishing was considered less than acceptable.

"Every striker wants to score more goals but as a target man I've always taken great delight in bringing other players into the game.

"At Liverpool and England I formed a great partnership with Michael Owen who played off me with great success and in more recent times Wayne Rooney carried out a similar role."

Many defenders also bore the brunt of Heskey's strength, and his physical approach allowed the likes of David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard to control games with their passing range and forward runs.

Heskey was the perfect example of a player who never let criticism affect him and the fact he was recalled by Fabio Capello for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, after experiencing some time in the football wilderness, was testimony to his value in the England shirt.

History recalls his magnificent contribution to one of England's finest away victories at Zagreb in September 2008 when they humbled Croatia 4-1.

It was the day Theo Walcott scored a brilliant hat-trick but Heskey made a huge contribution to allow Walcott and Rooney to play havoc with the Croatian defence.

Heskey played over 600 games in English senior football but is particularly concerned about the domination of foreign players in the Premier League.

"Obviously there has been talk of a quota system being introduced but the problem remains when you sell yourself as the best league in the world, it's only business that matters.

"Perhaps, they should drop the E [for English in EPL] and call it the Premier League but in the end we have to bring more English players players through from the Championship and the other Football League divisions.

"Thankfully, the authorities are now leading the push to produce more technical players in the club academies which can only contribute to the increase in English products progressing to the EPL."

Meanwhile, Heskey believes Australia had a great opportunity to play a young team in last month's international against Brazil because the squad needs backup and it would have been a good test to see who could rise to the plate.

"Certainly, the 6-0 drubbing confirmed there was nothing to lose by adopting a youth policy," says Heskey.

"Similarly, I believe this season will be a coming of age for the Jets' young players like [Joshua] Brillante, [Connor] Chapman, [Andrew] Hoole and [Adam] Taggart because they had a full season in the A-League last season as well as gaining valuable experience in the World Youth Championship in Turkey during June this year."

Elites bid hits legal barrier

Football Federation Victoria's bid to press ahead with the launch of its National Premier League elite state competition next season has run into a roadblock after a legal challenge referred the issue to the Supreme Court.

Chief Magistrate Peter Lauritsen granted the application of two FFV zone representatives who have links to a large number of clubs opposing the creation of the new competition in the form FFV wishes, to bring the matter to the highest court in the state.

The game's Victorian governing body has also been restrained (until the matter is heard fully in the Supreme Court) from announcing the NPL clubs/teams for 2014 and beyond. It has also been prevented from taking any further step towards establishing, organising or implementing the NPL in 2014 or beyond.

The challengers believe the decision shows the validity of their arguments.

''We'd like to commend all of the now 61 clubs and associations for taking the difficult but principled decision to stand together and achieve a successful NPL model that works for community, regional, state and VPL clubs in Victoria,'' they said in a statement after the hearing.

Games in Asia while Asian Cupid on is horrible...... The games should go to regional centres, but the FFA will probably follow the money overseas.

Expanding into Asia won't happen, AFC won't let it I reckon. Particularly with Wellington in the comp, and the FFA know its stupid as it will do nothing to improve our national team...... But it's good PR BS to get in the papers and have people talking, straight up stunt I reckon.

Great news for football fans across Australia today as it was announced that every Hyundai A-League match in the 2013/14 Season will have live coverage on ABC Radio platforms.

Under the historic four-year agreement, all 127 Regular Season matches and five Finals Series matches this season will have start-to-finish, uninterrupted live commentary.

FFA CEO David Gallop hailed the new agreement as another sign of football's breakthrough into the mainstream of Australian society.

"Live sports on ABC Radio have long been a staple of Australian life and I'm delighted that hundreds of hours of A-League action will be on the radio this season," said Gallop.

"The national radio broadcaster adds significantly to our reach at a time when audiences for the A-League are booming and there's a massive surge in interest in football.

"The ABC is a great supporter of the game, including the live TV coverage of the Westfield W-League, and I know the new partnership will be a major boost to our growth story."

ABC Radio has broadcast Socceroos FIFA World Cup qualifiers and major internationals over the past 30 years and coverage of the Hyundai A-League has grown steadily since the league's inception in 2005.

"The ABC looks forward to taking our partnership with the FFA to a whole new level," said Kate Dundas, Director ABC Radio.

"Under a new four year agreement we have committed to call each game of A-League football live via the ABC Radio mobile App and online streaming via the Grandstand website.

"After such a stellar 2012 season, we're confident this significant investment will help grow the A-League and deliver a great game to new audiences across the country."

ABC Radio will also broadcast matches on ABC Local Radio and on Grandstand Digital Radio.

Season 9 of the Hyundai A-League kicks off this Friday night when Sydney FC plays Newcastle Jets at Allianz Stadium, Sydney.

The key questions heading into A-League season No.9

Can the Wanderers keep it up?

Just as it was a huge ask for Western Sydney to perform as well as they did in their debut season, staying up there remains equally difficult. Nobody expected anything from Tony Popovic's side last year - something that undoubtedly played into their hands.

However, as the squad has been strengthened with smart signings and there have been no significant losses, they'll be right in the mix for the title.

How they juggle their Asian Champions League commitments might determine their ultimate success. They'll also need to prepare for teams who are willing to defend deep and counter-attack, especially at Parramatta Stadium.

2. Will the marquees shine?

The holy trinity – Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono – combined to score and create goals by the bucket load for their respective clubs last season. But they aren't getting any younger.

Del Piero, despite his undeniable class, turns 39 in November. Ono has just turned 34, while Heskey will be 36 in January. All three have battled various soft-tissue injuries in the past 12 months and it would be foolish to think they'll be running riot every week.

Heskey will miss the first three matches of the season with a grade-two hamstring tear after being cut down in a pre-season friendly against Melbourne Victory.
Plugging the gap: Can Sydney FC stop leaking goals?

Perhaps it's a sign that they won't get everything their own way this time around.

3. Will Nathan Tinkler stand by the Jets?

Hailed as the saviour of football in the Hunter Valley, Tinkler was seen as a godsend for the Newcastle Jets after Con Constantine's ownership spectacularly collapsed in 2010.
Nervous wait: A young generation of fans in the Hunter are keen for Nathan Tinkler's support.

While the signs were initially good for the Jets, worries over Tinkler's well-documented financial situation have led many to believe the club could again be headed for trouble. Hunter Sports Group has repeatedly insisted the Jets won't be compromised but the rumour mill won't let up.

While Tinkler deserves credit for investing in the likes of Emile Heskey, he also earned scorn for walking out on the Jets in April last year before eventually resuming full control.

It has left a generation of Newcastle football fans increasingly nervous about the future. A fresh statement of intent wouldn't go astray.

4. Should we expect another tactical revolution?

Watch an A-League match from any of the first three seasons and you'll see just how far the game has come. The primary reason is because three tactical masters – Ange Postecoglou, Graham Arnold and Tony Popovic – have cracked the code of winning.

There's now a race to see who else can step up. The Glory's Alastair Edwards is expected to turn Perth into a passing machine, likewise the Barcelona-educated Josep Gombau at Adelaide.

Mike Mulvey has some big plans for Brisbane Roar while Ernie Merrick faces a tough challenge to rebuild Wellington Phoenix.

How Sydney's style changes as a result of Rado Vidosic's arrival as Frank Farina's assistant remains to be seen. Perhaps it's fair to expect evolution more than revolution.

5. Can Sydney FC stop conceding goals?

The Sky Blues shipped a whopping 51 goals last season, the only team in the whole league to crack the half-century. Only North Queensland (60) and Perth (54) in 2010-11 have ever conceded more – and they had three more matches in the regular season.

That stat alone reveals how utterly woeful Sydney were defensively. Missing their best defender, Dutchman Pascal Bosschaart,
for almost the whole season didn't help. He's back but it's not known if the veteran can return to his best.

Nikola Petkovic, Matt Jurman and Marc Warren have all been signed but only time will tell if they can make the difference. At least Vedran Janjetovic showed potential between the posts when he came in for No.1 keeper Ivan Necevski.

Not sure what they want tinks to do, he kept Heskey, clubs still lives for the moment, memberships are still cheap, they would be the first things I'd cut if i wanted to wind up my involvement. What can he really do now anyway, our squad is locked down and the season is about to start, the only thing left to do is remove GVE but really what's the point the season would be a right off anyway by the time a new coach was found and you'd have to pay him and GVE. Makes more financial sense to just right off this season with GVE, if he succeeds that's a win, if not he's gone and you don't have to pay him out and have time to search for a replacement.

Gallop throws down gauntlet

Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop used Tuesday's A-League launch to make the boldest statement of his reign, declaring soccer will one day become Australia's national sport.

While some have wondered how the A-League will possibly top the dizzying heights of last season, Gallop warned that was nothing to what lay in the years and decades ahead.

''I can genuinely say our best years are still ahead of us,'' Gallop said at Allianz Stadium.

''Football will become the largest and most popular sport in this country. We are football, you are all part of it and I hope you're really excited about season nine.''

The A-League finally achieved mainstream public prominence last season - with crowd rises of 40 per cent and a television ratings rise of 100 per cent - and then secured its long-term future with the signing of a television deal that will bring the competition into free-to-air living rooms for the first time.

Various crowd records across the league are tipped to tumble this season and interest in the round-ball game is certain to pique as the 2014 World Cup in Brazil grows nearer.

Just to add weight to his words, Gallop then announced that all 127 A-League games, including the five finals, would be broadcast live on ABC radio. The government broadcaster has signed a four-year deal to call the matches.

''Live sports on ABC Radio have long been a staple of Australian life and I'm delighted that hundreds of hours of A-League action will be on the radio this season,'' Gallop said at the launch.

''The national radio broadcaster adds significantly to our reach at a time when audiences for the A-League are booming and there's a massive surge in interest in football.

''The ABC is a great supporter of the game, including the live TV coverage of the W-League, and I know the new partnership will be a major boost to our growth story.''

Gallop also launched the A-League's official television commercial, though canny viewers will have noted the advertisement hit screens the night before.

The theme of year will highlight the connection between fans and the players, declaring those on the terraces are the ones who ''power the game''. The slogan has already been widely condemned by fans after it was revealed this week that the governing body would condone further security crackdowns on active supporters.

Gallop paid tribute to three key marquee players - Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono - for renewing their contracts with their respective clubs after exceeding all expectations last year. ''These guys came last season and had fantastic seasons on and off the field, but very importantly, they signed up again for a second season,'' he said.

The season will kick off on Friday night when Sydney FC hosts the Newcastle Jets.

Six out of 10 A-League coaches back goal-line technology for matches in Australia

GOAL-LINE technology should be introduced in Australia, but not at any cost according to A-League coaches.

In an exclusive News Limited survey at yesterday's A-League season launch, six of 10 club bosses said some form of review system should be used for contentious goal mouth decisions while only three were against its introduction.

Adelaide's Josep Gombau, Brisbane's Mike Mulvey, Central Coast's Graham Arnold, Perth's Alistair Edwards, Sydney's Frank Farina and Wellington's Ernie Merrick each pushed for technology to be used in the sport.

But Western Sydney's Tony Popovic was in favour of "the naked eye" while both Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou and Heart counterpart John Aloisi expressed concerns about the potential cost of its implementation.

Goal-line technology made its debut in the English Premier League this season.

It was adopted for the first time in a competitive match in 2012 at the FIFA Club World Cup and is set to be used at next year's World Cup in Brazil.

Farina cited "many injustices over the years" as his reason why technology should be embraced while Arnold said there was too much to lose not to go down that path.

"In a competition with a salary cap, and such tight margins, it can be decided by crucial decisions like that," Arnold said.

"It’s horrible to lose a game when someone has made a mistake, especially when you know it needn’t have been made."

Gombau said anything that can "help football is a good thing" while Mulvey said "if there's anything that's super quick I'm all for it".

But both Aloisi and Postecoglou said the costs would be prohibitive.

"I think we can use the money elsewhere," Aloisi said.

"I think we're going to have a couple of professional referees in the next couple of years and I think that's more important at the moment."

Newcastle's Gary Van Egmond was undecided.

THE COACHES IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Should goal line technology be introduced in to the A-League?

Josep Gombau (Adelaide)
"Yes. All that we can do to help the football is a good thing."

Mike Mulvey (Brisbane)
"If there’s anything that’s super quick, I’m all for it. I just do not want to see the game stopped. But they could utilise the fourth official better. I’m all for it, as long as we regain the integrity of the game. Leave the referee in charge, but if you can help him with a blip that goes off when the ball goes over the line them I’m all for that."

Graham Arnold (Central Coast)
"Yes – in a competition with a salary cap, and such tight margins, it can be decided by crucial decisions like that. It’s horrible to lose a game when someone has made a mistake, especially when you know it needn’t have been made."'

John Aloisi (Melbourne Heart)
"No. I think we can use the money elsewhere. I think we're going to have a couple of professional referees in the next couple of years and I think that's more important at the moment."

Ange Postecoglou (Melbourne Victory)
"It would be great but knowing the expense, if we're going to spend that much money I reckon there are other priorities before that."

Gary Van Egmond (Newcastle)
Undecided.

Alistair Edwards (Perth)
"Yes. They've introduced it in other leagues around the world and our game is getting more and more popular within the country and within that more people are taking a massive interest. There's huge amounts of sponsorship dollars, corporate dollars and also with Fox Sports and SBS - with this massive investment we want to make sure that if goals are scored then they are registered."

Frank Farina (Sydney)
"Yes, the game has seen too many injustices down the years where a goal has been given or not incorrectly. If technology can solve those issues, we should embrace it."

Ernie Merrick (Wellington)
"Absolutely. In the big leagues especially there are millions of dollars involved in games. Often games are won by one goal. Why wouldn’t you use technology that’s available. Every league of the highest professional level, should use goal-line technology. Even for offsides they should have replays."

Tony Popovic (Western Sydney)
"I don’t think we need it, I’m still a fan of the human eye. You can’t dismiss technology but other things should take priority."

Agree totally with this. As anxious as we get re ownership we can only go with the moment and at present we have a team.

As for GVE i reckon the only thing that will ensure him further job security is a top 2 finish. Setting the bar so high for GvE gives them a greater window of opportunity to move him on. I am sure the club would rather avoid any chance of having to perform more damage control online Q & A's from the punters.

I'd like to ask who he has earned scorn from for walking out on the club? The issue for him at the time was why the FFA made him pay $5million for the Jets license when Clive Palmer got his for nothing. When you look back at it, the FFA didn't want to keep running the club themselves, so why should the Jets have been worth anything? It's not like WSW where they are happy to keep ownership until they find the right buyer. It was a fire sale. And if anyone should have got that $5mil it should have been Con for the investment he put in, but the FFA negotiated with Tinkler behind Con's back. In retrospect, you can't blame Tinks for getting the shits over it.

Central Coast coach Graham Arnold has called on the FFA to scrap its restrictions on the number of players A-League clubs can sign, saying it is hindering the sport's future in Australia.

FFA boss David Gallop used Tuesday's season launch to boldly claim soccer is on a firm path to becoming the biggest and most popular sport in the country.

But Arnold said that, while football has vast playing numbers among children and teenagers, too many talented youngsters are missing the opportunity to make the giant leap from the state leagues to the top tier and a possible full-time career.

Under the FFA's current limit clubs can sign up to 23 players but three must be under the age of 20, while a further three youth team players can be signed on the base salary but outside the 23 and salary cap.

"I'd like to see a bit of a change from the FFA so they get rid of their 23 players (restriction)," Arnold said.

"And if we want to spend our salary cap on 30 players and have 10 kids of minimum wage it's also good for the sport, because we've only got nine teams here in Australia.

"You're getting 17, 18, 19-year-olds who are that good but you can't fit them all in, and that's a problem.

"There's so much talent in Australia, and there's so many talented youngsters that you've really got to give them the chance.

"If you don't give them the chance, the different levels between A-League and state league is so big that they can miss the boat."

Such a move would work for the set-up at the Gosford-based club, who this season takes over the reins of its academy from Central Coast Football (CCF), meaning Arnold can keep a closer eye on the development of younger players.

Since taking up his position in 2010, the former Socceroos coach has been a strong advocate of transitioning teenage home-grown talent into his senior squad and beyond to international opportunities.

Despite talks with overseas clubs he extended his contract in September until the end of the 2015/16 season, primarily to continue that work.

He recently signed 15-year-old Anthony Khalik - the youngest player ever to be on the books of an A-League squad - on a three-year deal from the Australian Institute of Sport.

Khalik will join 16-year-old AIS team-mate Liam Rose in the Mariners squad at the completion of their program in March.

"If there wasn't a restriction on the number of players, I'd probably have them in now," Arnold said.

"But we also have to respect the Institute of Sport's program, and if we tear that apart then the purpose of the government putting money in to help produce those players could fall apart."

Left winger Tom Slater, the 16-year-old son of former Socceroo Robbie Slater, was also snapped up in July, and made his mark by scoring the only goal in the Mariners' second preseason friendly

Effectively only 60 elite developmental positions available nationwide, compare this to more succesful footballing nationals (Germany, Holland, etc) and it's not hard to see why our national team is suffering through its current talent drought...

In one regard what he is on about is correct we need to give more younger players a go.

We do not necessarily need bigger squads though. We have youth teams. These players should be given a go more often. Arnold should release Kwassniik and Pellegrino and other older players in his squad not playing. These types should not be getting paid to be HAL Footballers just like the chaff in our squad Mitchell/Bridges etc. Add in the likes of all these blokes constantly changing clubs at HAL level and clubs recycling has beens who were not wanted at other clubs needs to stop. I hear Razzler may turn out for Smurfs this week. Why sign him and not give a young kid a go??

Generally speaking the HAL squads need culling big time so so many of the players ain't clogging up the system and this way the kids will geta chance to develop

Arnold should release Pellegrino

Pellegrino has already been released.

But I agree with Member here - there is no need to increase squad size. What there is a need for is to be able to pay more youth team players more money, and tie it all up with the youth system. And if they're good enough, if in need, they can still play for the senior team.

You look at Dino Faj as an example I can think of currently - didn't stay with the youth because the money he was making was not as good as what he would have in NBN. If we are able to bridge the money gap between NYL and NBN, we'll see less players whinging about being in the NYL setup (believe me, heaps of NYL kids whinge about the lack of money they get) and the whole HAL club will be stronger because of it.

I agree we should be developing players for the future but while clubs continue to use the NYL system as a means for their first team extras to keep match fit you will be sacrificing the chance for youth players to have a chance to impress and develop. I will bet the first NYL game for Newy will have at least 5 or 6 players that are in the first team group playing.

The money side of youth development should be structured to have a wage/allowance component for the players but also an educational component to set them up should they not reach HAL level and they can then follow a different path.

Do some more research next time.
NYL can only have 4 players over 20 on the team sheet, IMO having teams using NYL as a way of keeping squad players match fit benefits the quality of the NYL hence benefitting the development of the kids. You only have to look at how well Taylor keeps the kids organized when he plays NYL to see that.

I wasn't saying they would be overage players I said they would be first team players and with the age of our squad this is a possibility. My argument is the NYL squad should be a development league (which it was supposed to be) for players that are not considered first squad material but are working towards it. If you are bringing players back or playing them there when they are in the top 23 then what is the development for those players playing at a lower level then they already are. Last year it was Chapman, Oxborrow, Brown, Caravella, Bridges, Kennedy, Hoole, Virgilli, Reagan, Pepper etc that were regularly in and out of the youth side. Get the Youth back to the development stage it should be.

I'm not really sure what Arnie's point is...

Even if he had 50 young blokes signed up, only 14 can get a run each week. How many of his 23? man squad are going to get decent/consistent game time?

If he has twice the number of youth players, does that mean they'll get half as much game time? So instead of 4 young guys playing 6 games each, he'll play 8 young guys for 3 games each?

Best solution for the future is more clubs = more players playing professionally & more matches (possibly midweek and a need to rotate the squad more).

While I admit there are benefits from them playing with the higher calibre players of the ones you listed Remington is moving to Lambton next year alongside Abe Wheelhouse, Bradbury is likely to be done with the Jets as he is behind Taggz, Burns, Brown, Virgilli, Hoole. Lundy is also in the same position but may be OK if he is given a chance. A lot of these youth guys don't get the chance to play with the names coming back as they are used as substitutes for the first team members and as such get less time in a competitive game situation then normal.

The aim of the club should be to get as many youth players as they can up to a level and then choose the best players from that for the Youth squad and I think this will happen through the emerging Jets but the club also needs to be encouraging the State League clubs to produce better quality youth players through their sides to give the Jets a bigger range to choose from. Unfortuanately I think NNSWFF has blinkers on when offering potential candidates to the Jets and rely on the old if they aren't good enough at 10 years old they won't be good enough later.

So let me get this straight - we should stop spending money on the older players and concentrate on youth?
Did no-one watch the Jets last season?

Personally, I thought that was the goal of the NPL, to blood more youngsters and get rid of the "has-beens" but with the shitstorm that has caused both inside and outside Victoria for a semi-pro league, imagine what it would cause for a professional league!

Ridiculous.

Marquee A-League games in Sydney will lack the visual crowd displays of last year after NSW Police banned supporters unveiling large-scale banners at specific fixtures as part of a clampdown on the behaviour of football fans.

Supporter groups were told large ''pull-over'' banners that cover entire bays would not be permitted at games the police deem ''high-risk'', and any banner greater than two metres by two metres would need prior police approval. These fixtures include three games between Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC and Sydney FC's games against Melbourne Victory.

Burns keen to press claims for Cup berth
By ROBERT DILLON
Oct. 10, 2013, 11 p.m.

NATHAN Burns will get his chance to leave a lasting first impression when he replaces Jets veteran Michael Bridges in the starting side for tonight’s season-opener against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.

Burns, Newcastle’s highly rated loan signing from Korean club Incheon United, was expected to be deployed as an interchange impact player.

Instead he will replace Bridges at No.10.

Bridges strained his groin in an intra-club trial match last week. Jets coach Gary van Egmond said he would be rested for the round-two clash with Perth at Hunter Stadium on Sunday week.

‘‘We’re not going to risk him. Not at this stage of the year,’’ van Egmond said.

He admitted the Jets would miss the creativity and experience of Bridges, especially with English import Emile Heskey (knee) also sidelined.

He was confident Burns’s passing game would help exploit the pace of Adam Taggart, James Virgili and Craig Goodwin.

‘‘Nathan can play in a various number of roles,’’ van Egmond said. ‘‘He can probably play anywhere across the front third.

‘‘He really enjoys playing as a 10 and that’s where he’ll play tomorrow ... it offers a different challenge to Sydney and it gives us a different direction in how we can play the game, in what Nathan offers as a 10 compared to Bridgey.

‘‘Both are very good in their own right.’’

Newcastle’s loan deal with Incheon expires on January 11, which means Burns has until the round-14 clash with Melbourne Victory to stamp his class on the A-League.

A seven-time Socceroos representative, he made his debut in the A-League as a teenager and scored nine goals for Adelaide in 28 games before he was signed by Greek giant AEK Athens and eventually heading to Korea.

After playing just three games in the K-League last season, he is eager to rack up some consistent game time with Newcastle and stake a claim for a World Cup berth.

Taggart, meanwhile, was looking forward to the challenge of leading Newcastle’s attack in Heskey’s absence.

The 20-year-old scored only two goals in his 19 games for the Jets last season – 10 of which were off the bench – and feels ready to improve his strike rate.

‘‘There’s a great side here and in terms of service and things like that, I’m really looking forward to it,’’ he said. ‘‘I don’t like to set a number of goals I want to score.

‘‘I think taking each game as it comes, and trying to finish every chance that you get is the main thing.’’

Van Egmond said the Jets had paid no attention to reports Sydney would field a team depleted by injuries.

‘‘It doesn’t matter to us,’’ he said. ‘‘They’ll put on a competitive team.’’

He also remained unconcerned that most bookmakers and media pundits regard the Jets as premiership long shots.

‘‘I’m sure West Sydney Wanderers were in a similar position last year and we all know what happened there,’’ van Egmond said.

So we don't even have burns for all of January, blokes probably going to be lucky to play 8 or so games for us, on the bright side at least it gives bridges his 8 weeks to get back to "The fittest I've been in years"

Baartz confident Jets can win comp
By ROBERT DILLON
Oct. 10, 2013, 11:30 p.m.

NEWCASTLE football legend Ray Baartz believes the Jets have no weaknesses and no reason to fear anyone as they prepare to launch a season of redemption against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium tonight.

Having missed the play-offs for the past three years, Newcastle will kick off this campaign as $26 long shots for the A-League title.

But Baartz, the Jets chairman and former Socceroo, is confident Gary van Egmond’s troops will improve on last season, when they finished eighth, one point away from the top six.

He believes a finals berth is the minimum they should aim to achieve.

‘‘I think if everybody plays to the maximum of their ability, and if we have a good run without injuries, I don’t think we need to fear anybody,’’ he said yesterday.

‘‘We did beat most of the top teams last year, but then consistency let us down a little bit.

‘‘But with the experience we’ve got now, I think we’ve got a squad that’s the equal of any in the league ... we’re a realistic chance of challenging for any honours.’’

Baartz said the recruitment of former Netherlands World Cup defender Kew Jaliens, Socceroos hopeful Nathan Burns [on loan] and young striker Joey Gibbs had reinforced van Egmond’s roster in crucial areas.

‘‘I look at the squad and I don’t think we’ve got a weakness anywhere.

‘‘We’re putting a lot of expectation on making the top four, or at least the top six. Anything less than that would be a big disappointment.’’

The Jets beat the top three teams, Central Coast, Western Sydney and Melbourne Victory, in the first six rounds last season but stumbled on the tightrope walk into the finals when they lost three of their last four games.

Baartz said some of Newcastle’s players were ‘‘probably a bit immature at times last year’’, especially in defence, but would benefit from lessons learned the hard way.

‘‘We faltered towards the end because a lot of our players lacked experience. They’ll be better for that. We feel we’ve got a lot of depth and quality there and competition for places.

‘‘I’m very confident the young players will kick on after the experience they gained last year, so there’s a lot of excitement and a lot of anticipation. My hopes are pretty high, to be honest with you.’’

He said the confidence of tyros like Connor Chapman, Josh Brillante and Craig Goodwin should be ‘‘sky high’’ with a full A-League season behind them and the experience they had gained in national teams.

English veterans Emile Heskey (knee) and Michael Bridges (groin) are unavailable, but Baartz was confident the Jets were ready to make a statement against Sydney tonight.

‘‘We had a team dinner last night and the mood and the spirit is only positive. I just think everything’s pointing towards a really exciting season.’’

www.theherald.com.au/story/1834241/baartz-confident-jets-can-win-comp-poll/?cs=303

Let me help you Ray.

CAM, we lack a creative spark in the middle of the park, bridges is just a really weak make shift CAM, Burns does not really count as he could very well be pissing off back to Korea come the first week of January.

We also lack a solid first choice left back, Galloway is ok but no stand out and does not offer enough in attack where he wastes chances to provide for the front men. Goodwin looks to be moved further forward these days under GVE so I'm not counting him, even then his defence is not really solid, but has much better abilities pushing up the field.

onfield enforcer knows how to cruise
by james gardiner
oct. 10, 2013, 11 p.m.

it’s the best 12 grand he ever spent, ruben zadkovich boasts as he turns the ignition in his kombi van.

The mustard yellow, 1972 lowlight camper – surfboard and wetsuit in the back – is the ugly duckling in a collection of the latest models, including a porsche and various audis parked at the jets training base.

Sunglasses on, a customary wave out the window and off down the road the kombi roars.

Say hello to the other side of the jets captain – the laid-back bulli boy who makes the trek down the coast to his home break, sandon point, whenever he needs a dose of reality.

It is a complete 180 degrees from the character most fans are familiar with – the intense, vein-bursting, dog-at-a-bone midfielder who treats every game, every tackle as though life depended on it.

‘‘people often form opinions based on how i play,’’ zadkovich said.

‘‘in my case, and i’m sure in many other cases, it is totally different.

‘‘when i cross that white line i will do anything to win. I don’t care whether i’m liked or not.

‘‘i hope there is 50,000 hating on me at allianz stadium against sydney on friday. As long as we win.

‘‘but when i’m off the field, i care and want to be a good person.

‘‘i have always tried to keep my feet on the ground and be good to people.

‘‘if you do that i find people are very good back to you.

‘‘in newcastle, that is ten-fold.’’

zadkovich makes no apology for his combative on-field style, nor does he intend to curb it.

If a ball is there to be won, a tackle to be made, the jets no.8 is front and centre.

He does, however, object to the well-subscribed theory that he is a loose cannon, easily baited to the point where he snaps. One red card in 70 games for the jets adds weight to his protest.

‘‘sometimes people think a reaction and a rash challenge is something that happens out of instinct,’’ zadkovich said.

‘‘people will see a bad tackle on someone and say ‘ruben has lost his head’.

‘‘what they don’t know is that i made the decision that i am going to go in and tackle this guy as hard as i can. That is what i feel in that moment he deserves or what our team needs.

‘‘it is a conscious decision. I don’t do things without thinking. Everything is calculated.’’

it is a competitive streak instilled in him as a boy.

The youngest son of a former champion queensland bush rugby league five-eighth, the blond-haired tearaway learned to fend for himself and fast.

‘‘dad captained darling downs and won toowoomba grand finals at a pretty good standard,’’ zadkovich said.

‘‘i don’t think it was that though. Me and my brothers chose soccer and played from a young age.

‘‘being the youngest, simon and luke used to smash me. Carrying on and sulking was never going to work. I had to try harder or do whatever i could to win.

‘‘as i got older and stronger, the battles got bigger and harder.

‘‘football is a game where i have often said nice guys finish last.

‘‘you get a select few in different sports – people like [knights legend] danny buderus, he is an all-round, stand-up guy.

‘‘not many people with his kindness make it to the top.

‘‘you have to find the balance of when to flick the switch.’’

simon, now 32, is a remote area nurse in north-east arnhem land. Luke, 30, is a london-based lawyer.

‘‘they are both very good at what they do,’’ zadkovich said.

Ruben, 27, went down the path of football.

‘‘i left the wollongong wolves at 17 to play in the local league with my two brothers at bulli and got a job as a brickie’s labourer,’’ he said.

‘‘i worked for a couple of months until i had enough money to buy an open return ticket to england.

‘‘i rang all 92 clubs from premier league teams all the way through to league two.

‘‘the ones who wrote back were gillingham and luton town, and they both said ‘sorry but we are not interested’.

‘‘eventually through [former wollongong and jets midfielder] noel spencer, he knew an agent called simon thompson, who knew the youth director at queens park rangers. I ended up getting a one-day trial.

‘‘first-team manager ian holloway happened to watch me score a goal, called me over and told me that i was training with him for the next two weeks.

‘‘shortly after that i signed a professional contract for qpr.

‘‘bar for noel spencer knowing simon thompson it wouldn’t have happened.

‘‘i was told in wollongong that i wasn’t good enough and had the wrong attitude.

‘‘i went to the other side of the world and got a contract on my own back.

‘‘a year later i make the australian under-20 side, sign for sydney, win an a-league grand final and go on to play for the socceroos.

‘‘now i am captain of the newcastle jets.

‘‘it’s funny because people say ‘you’re lucky’.

‘‘in many respects we are lucky as footballers because of the lifestyle and how it is.

‘‘but make no mistakes, other than health-wise and having a good body to get to this stage, luck didn’t play the biggest part.

‘‘it was my attitude and my determination. I know that i have earned what i have got. That’s why i work so hard to keep it, and that’s why i want to keep pushing forward.’’

To pigeon-hole Zadkovich purely as an enforcer is under-selling him.

You don’t get signed as an 18-year-old by QPR, later move to then Premier League club Derby County, score Australia’s only goal at the Beijing Olympics, and earn three senior national team caps, the latest in July, if you are one dimensional.

‘‘People focus on his physical capabilities,’’ coach Gary van Egmond said.

‘‘He has very good technique in regards to his passing ability and a lovely first touch.

‘‘He is really working hard in regards to his positioning in midfield.

‘‘You can see he has taken things on board to improve his game and has reaped the benefits with his Socceroos call up.

‘‘He is 27 but there is still more for him to improve.’’

There is no doubt that the captaincy, and the maturity required to lead, has aided Zadkovich’s development.

Pitched into the role after the injury and then mid-season departure of Jobe Wheelhouse, Zadkovich admitted the armband had forced a change in mindset.

‘‘You realise you have more people looking at you to set the standards and lead by example,’’ he said.

‘‘That was not always the case early on in my career.

‘‘I used to just work hard. If I was having an off day, I was having an off day.

‘‘It didn’t really affect everyone else. Now as a leader it does affect everyone.

‘‘I am still a young captain and I want to learn and get better.

‘‘I know on the weekend in a proper competitive A-League match, I work hard and my competitiveness is there to see.

‘‘That is the example I want to set for the boys and I really feel they will follow.

‘‘In other areas of captaincy I want to improve and keep learning.’’

Zadkovich has the benefit of a number experienced heads in the dressing room. Guys to bounce ideas off and seek advice.

Emile Heskey played more than 350 games in the English Premier League and represented England. Michael Bridges also came through the English top tier. Kew Jaliens has 10 caps for Holland and Zenon Caravella built a wealth of knowledge at four A-League clubs.

‘‘They are people I turn to all the time,’’ he said.

‘‘I want to learn from my peers and be the best captain I can be.

‘‘When we have had a few of those talks, they say ‘you see things in black and white’. Sometimes it needs to be said or needs to be done this way’.

‘‘I have always had a strong relationship with Dutchy [coach Gary van Egmond].

‘‘He gives me feedback and pulls me into line when I need to be.

‘‘If there is something I disagree with I can talk to him about it. He will listen but he has the final say.

‘‘Whatever he wants me to do, I will do it to the best of my ability.

‘‘There are times when you have a difference of opinion. That is a healthy thing.’’

It was inevitable that captain and coach would butt heads.

Van Egmond agreed that ‘‘you need conflict’’ before adding ‘‘it needs to be the right type of conflict’’.

‘‘It’s not about flying off the handle, it’s about analysing what is going on, having a chat, stating your opinion and backing it up with facts,’’ he said.

‘‘I have no doubts the captaincy has helped Ruben’s game.

‘‘His mentality mirrors the spirit of the town,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘I know he takes a lot of pride and really feels a sense of honour that he is leading the boys.’’

A

part from ‘‘leading the boys’’ Zadkovich takes the responsibility of representing the region and its people very seriously.

‘‘Some of the friends I have made in this town, I can tell they will be lifelong friends,’’ he said.

‘‘When I first arrived three years ago, I was lucky enough to get looked after by a guy named Tim Woolf.

‘‘He was a friend of a friend and he took me in for three months.

‘‘He is a Merewether boy, plays [rugby] for the Greens. Through him I met a whole bunch of people my age who have nothing to do with football.

‘‘They follow it now and give me a bit of stick about the game.

‘‘Like most people in Newcastle, they just get behind their team. Even if they are not massive soccer fans, they still get behind the Jets.

‘‘Most Newcastle people are very proud of the people who represent them.

‘‘Now I feel like one of the Merewether boys. It is good to be able to go for a surf with those guys away from my teammates.’’

Which brings us to the Kombi.

‘‘It is one of the best things I have bought,’’ he said.

‘‘To be able to get in that car, pick up a couple of mates, throw the boards in the back and go for a surf or cruise the scenic way to Bulli.

‘‘Going back to Bulli, especially in that car, stripping things back to the basics, sometimes it is the best things in life.

‘‘It reminds me of where I was as a 17-year-old and where I am now.

‘‘I never want to change. I don’t see myself as a celebrity or star.

‘‘I see myself as a normal bloke. I’m a Bulli boy and now I’m one of the Merewether boys.

‘‘That’s who I am, an average Novocastrian.’’

Asian Champions League a possibility for SA state league clubs

Val Migliaccio
The Advertiser
October 10, 2013 7:58PM

FOOTBALL Federation Australia is thinking about awarding the FFA Cup winner a spot in the lucrative AFC Champions League.

Potentially all clubs entering the Cup competition - from A-League to the nation's state league outfits - have chances to face the best teams in Asia in the multi-million dollar competition.

The inaugural FFA Cup kicks off for state league clubs from February with A-League clubs expected to enter the round-of-32 from July.

''The FFA Cup winner over time could gain entry to the AFC Champions League,'' declared A-League head Damien De Bohun.

''It's not resolved yet but the theme of the FFA Cup is connecting to grassroots football.''

De Bohun was with FFA head of community football Emma Highwood in Adelaide on Thursday for discussions with Reds officials over the FFA's preferred model for Adelaide United's youth side.

FFA wants all A-League clubs branded as their own identity and working towards a common goal in all state league competitions through club youth teams.

De Bohun said FFA prefers all A-League sides to have its reserves playing for 10 months of the year to suit the FFA's integrated pathway plan after Adelaide last month announced a satellite club agreement with Enfield City.

The move was not sanctioned by FFA when Perth Glory - after the club's attempt to enter the state league via a club partner in WA failed - was earlier this month endorsed by FFA as the new role model development club.

Glory will field a side in its state league competition and the club will draw its players from the integrated pathway.

Newcastle Jets is another model club fielding its youth side and other junior sides in the northern NSW state league competitions.

Can't see it happening, any state league team would fail a number of the ACL entry requirements, would be better to aim for the Suzuki cup or Singapore Cup to reward the highest placed state league team, while the highest HAL team to take the ACL berth as per the ACL reg's for domestic cups.

In The Mixer: Reds let James Troisi slip, new face Tara Rushton and Ernie Merrick still bitter

Marco Monteverde and Val Migliaccio
News Limited
October 10, 2013 4:04PM

IN The Mixer: James Troisi - on loan to Melbourne Victory from Juventus and Atalanta, co-owners of the Socceroo - should have been on Adelaide United books not once but twice.

The Adelaide-born attacker's management team made contact with the Reds and its former coach John Kosmina last year before signing for Juventus and Atalanta.

Troisi was caught in the middle of a pay dispute in Turkey and when the call came in saying the Socceroo was available in 2012, Kosmina was reportedly after a defender and no further contact was made.

Former Socceroos Vincenzo Grella who works in tangent with player/agent Frank Trimboli put in another call to Adelaide this year when Troisi was looking to move away from Atalanta after he was forced to train alone.

Again nothing ever eventuated.

And former Adelaide United attacker Nathan Burns was reportedly also in the same predicament he was contemplating a return to SA before he was snapped up by Newcastle Jets.

STEVE OR DAVID, IT'S ALL THE SAME THING

"STEVE what are we doing after the one-on-one interviews?" was the ice breaking words coming from Eugene Galekovic's mouth at the A-League's season launch at AAMI Park on Tuesday.

But for some reason 'Steve' wasn't responding to the Adelaide United gloveman's question.

Why? Because 'Steve' wasn't 'Steve.'

It was in fact David Mason Football Federation Australia's general manager communications and media.

But Maso didn't mind being called Steve despite being Eugene's Olyroos team manager at the 2004 Olympic Games.

So 'Steve' it is.

NEW FACE EQUALS BIG REACTION

TARA Rushton Fox Sports football's new face of the game drew some amazing reactions from the A-League's club men at AAMI Park on Wednesday.

Rushton hosted the launch alongside Simon Hill and didn't skip a beat.

She was refreshingly upbeat when hosting Fox Sports football's shootout with Hill before Adelaide United claimed the prize.

Mabil was mentored by Bruce Djite and smashed the opposition to bits as Adelaide walked away with its first trophy of the new season.

Contestants from Melbourne Victory, Adelaide United, Melbourne Heart and Perth Glory had 45 seconds to score as many goals as they could in an 18 yard shootout.

With Djite calmly laying off balls, Mabil belted nine goals home from 13 shots.

He easily beat Glory's Jamie Maclaren, Hearts former Red Iain Ramsay and Victory's Connor Pain.

THE WORD VICTORY STILL TASTES BITTER

ERNIE Merrick's axing as Melbourne Victory coach still cuts deep with the new Wellington Phoenix mentor.

On stage at Tuesday's A-League launch at Allianz Stadium, Merrick refused to refer to the Victory by their name as he discussed his return to the A-League.
You can bet that Merrick has had Monday, November 4 circled on his calendar for some time.

That's the day he returns to Etihad Stadium for the Phoenix's clash against the Victory.

SHOWDOWN: FOOTBALL VS BASKETBALL

FOOTBALL meets basketball tonight in the first episode of new SBS sports entertainment program Thursday FC.

Western Sydney Wanderers star Youssouf Hersi who will take on the world famous Harlem Globetrotters.

The show will also feature Sydney FC defender Pascal Bosschaart, again injured, and another player currently sidelined, Newcastle Jets star Emile Heskey.
HESKEY questioned the use of the term friendly at the Sydney leg of the A-League launch as he lamented the knee injury that will keep him out for the first few weeks of the season.

The former England international suffered the injury in a pre-season clash against Melbourne Victory, presumably from an ill-timed challenge.

However, Heskey was adamant he would not seek retribution when the two teams met in the season proper.

AIN'T THAT A SHAME

THE season hasn't even started and it seems the Jets are already getting some of the media offside.

Upset with a newspaper report, Jets officials attempted to stop a journalist speaking to Heskey at the launch.

We're not sure if they succeeded, but just trying to block someone doing their job is a joke.

PHIL A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR

FORMER Adelaide United boss Phil Stubbins has been working wonders with Thailand's Ayutthaya.

Since answering an SOS the club was heading for relegation, but Stubbins has pulled the side out of the mire.

Ayutthaya is a point clear of relegation with three rounds remaining after Stubbins secured three wins and three draws since he arrived.

It's understood Stubbins has now been tabled a very good offer to stay on next season.

A REAL LIVERPOOL MAN IN AUS

MATTHEW Selby is in the running to win a position on Liverpool's supporters committee representing Asia, Oceania, Middle East and Africa.

Highbury-based (SA) Selby, however, is up against a candidate from Dubai and one from Qatar.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to represent about 70 per cent of the world's population," said the e-football director.
"The region is huge.

"If I win I'll be the conduit for the fans and Liverpool and I'll be summoned to four meetings a year to meet club officials and the owners."

A-LEAGUE TAKING OVER THE WORLD

THE A-LEAGUE is spreading its tentacles rapidly across the planet.
The US, China, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, Singapore and Myanmar can watch entire matches while 127 matches will be streamed online globally.

Overseas fans can subscribe to www.aleague.livesport.tv to watch all the action online while 53 nations in Asia and the Middle East will broadcast highlights packages of the competition on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "Australian Network".

"The growth of the Hyundai A-League has been extraordinary in the last two years and that is starting to bear fruit overseas as more and more football fans around the world develop an appetite for our national competition," said FFA chief executive David Gallop.

"The arrival of marquee players like Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono has opened the eyes of the world to the Hyundai A-League and now they can watch all of our stars in action on a weekly basis."

Wonder who we are pissing off now, must have been someone from the Herald or possibly SMH didn't they recently comment about uncertainty regarding Tinks and his need to show his commitment to the jets.

I just think everything’s pointing towards a really exciting season

Wasn't he on the Advisory Board and now he goes on the public record and says we have no weaknesses??

Getting rid of him from the Advisory Board may be the best thing we ever done judging by that statement

Graham Arnold set to leave Mariners and sign with J-League club
November 13, 2013 - 8:55PM Heading overseas: Graham Arnold could have played his last game for the Central Coast Mariners. Photo: Getty Images
Graham Arnold's tenure as coach of the Central Coast Mariners is to come to an abrupt end after the club granted him permission to pursue a move to a top-tier Japanese club.
The Mariners on Wednesday confirmed they had received an approach from a high-profile Asian club. Fairfax Media understands that J-League club Vegalta Sendai are the front-runners to land the signature of Arnold.

Vegalta are looking for a replacement for outbound coach Makoto Teguramori, who steered Vegalta to promotion to the J-League 1 in 2009 and guided them to a shock runners-up finish last year, after the 45-year-old was recently appointed as the new head coach of Japan's under-21 and Olympic team as of next year.

The J-League side is understood to have offered the vacant position to Arnold, who will travel to Japan this week to finalise the deal.
The Mariners have confirmed they expect the 50-year-old tactician to agree to terms with the Asian club and believe he has already coached his last game with the A-League champions.
Arnold has publicly stated his desire to further his coaching career overseas and although he signed a long-term contract extension with the Mariners before the start of the A-League season, he did so only on the proviso that he had a release clause allowing him to move to a larger club in Asia or in Europe.

Arnold's impending Japanese trip to negotiate the move will not cause any immediate disruption to the Mariners, who do not play this weekend as their round-seven fixture against Wellington Phoenix is scheduled for December 19 due to New Zealand's World Cup qualifiers against Mexico.
Should Arnold sign for the club in the J-League, Mariners assistant coach Phil Moss will be promoted to the role of head coach. He has spent more than three years as assistant coach.
Mariners group general manager Peter Turnbull said the club had been working on a succession plan for Arnold's departure.
"The success of our club over the past three seasons under Graham Arnold and his staff always meant Graham would receive interest from rival Hyundai A-League and foreign clubs," Turnbull said.
"As such, we have been planning for the past 18 months for Phil [Moss] to take on the role of head coach of the club upon Graham's departure. Of course, Graham has been helping prepare Phil for the position."
Moss joined the Mariners in 2010 after previously being the head coach of NSW Premier League club Manly United for six years.
Moss was also a former teammate of Arnold at Northern Spirit in the now defunct National Soccer League and will take charge of the Mariners' training session in the absence of Arnold later this week.

Arnold's expected departure continues the rising stock of Australian coaches as it represents the second high-profile managerial exit in the A-League in just weeks. Ange Postecoglou coached his last game at Melbourne Victory two weeks ago before signing a five-year deal to lead the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2015 Asian Cup on home soil and through the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup to be held in Russia.
While Arnold narrowly missed out on the appointment for the Socceroos job, he is set to become the first local coach to progress from the A-League to a top club in Asia.

Like him or not Arnold has been successful when it comes to spotting and developing talent in the a-league. I'm not surprised he's been picked up by a J-League club.

If he struggles in the J league he will be picked up in the HAL whenever a post becomes vacant. Being that GVE is off contract this season end there is a remarkable opportunity that Jets could be looking for Manager at the time Arnie gets arse in Japan.

THE AFL has blocked Football Federation Australia from booking Etihad Stadium for the A-League grand final.

The standoff means Melbourne Victory, should it win hosting rights, will have to play the title decider at AAMI Park, denying in excess of 20,000 fans the chance to attend.

The Herald Sun understands Etihad Stadium management was happy to allow the tentative booking for Sunday, May 4 when FFA first made its approach six months ago.

But the AFL has contractual rights to the ground and decided to book the Docklands stadium on the night of Saturday, May 3 (for Essendon v Western Bulldogs) and the following afternoon (North Melbourne v Gold Coast).

The MCG is also in use on both days of that weekend and an A-League grand final across the road at AAMI Park would further clog the Olympic Park precinct.

Etihad is available to FFA on Friday, May 2, but a grand final cannot be played in that timeslot for interstate fan travel and broadcast reasons.

It's understood Sydney's ANZ and Allianz stadiums and Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium have successfully been pre-booked for the game.

FFA said last night they were disappointed with the outcome and would seek to avoid a similar situation in the future.

"FFA made a formal request to book Etihad Stadium six months ago, but we've been told recently that pre-existing rights have been exercised by other venue hirers, after the A-League fixture was published," an FFA spokesman said.

"This is a matter for the venue managers, but it's something FFA will discuss with the Victorian Government in due course. "

Etihad Stadium has hosted three A-League grand finals, netting crowds of 55,436 (2007), 53,273 (2009) and 44,560 in 2010 when capacity was reduced to allow the ground's retractable seating to be brought in.

AAMI Park has a capacity of just over 30,000.

The AFL on Tuesday denied the scheduling move was aimed at inconveniencing the A-League.

"The AFL booked Etihad Stadium on that weekend because May - along with April, June, July and August - is the peak point of our home and away season with nine matches every weekend," an AFL spokesman said.

"Etihad Stadium is hosting a greater number of games in 2014 because there was no final played at the venue in 2013, which further requires our call on the venue in 2014 as the primary tenant."

Only eight times during the AFL's 2014 season will both Etihad Stadium and the MCG both host Saturday and Sunday matches in the same round.

Two of those rounds also clash with the A-League's elimination final and preliminary final weekends.

Those finals can be played on Friday or Thursday nights as both Friday April 18 (Good Friday) and Friday April 25 (Anzac Day) are public holidays.

Etihad Stadium communications manager Bill Lane said the AFL "always has first right" to booking the ground.

"We'd like to be able to host an A-League grand final, but sometimes the stars don't quite align," he said.

Dutchy puts Jets possession game on backburner

JETS coach Gary van Egmond conceded yesterday that he had shelved the possession-based game he had insisted on introducing for a style more suitable to his players.

The Jets host league leaders Brisbane Roar, who under former coach Ange Postecoglou were the first A-League team to bring in the fashionable tiki-taka game plan made famous by Barcelona, at Hunter Stadium tomorrow.

Van Egmond had followed a similar path of playing out from the back, dominating possession and deploying a high defensive line.

But after missing the finals for the past two seasons and opening this campaign with a 2-0 loss to Sydney FC, despite having 61per cent of the ball, the coach has altered his approach.

‘‘It is definitely a change in tack from us,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘We looked at it last year and we conceded a number of goals. I think it was 45 in 27 games.

‘‘You are not going to win anything conceding that many goals.

‘‘This season we have conceded five goals in five games. That puts you in pretty good stead when it comes to winning games and picking up points.

‘‘We have been controlling the game quite a bit without the ball with our defensive shape.’’

The Jets are unbeaten since the opening loss at Allianz Stadium, stringing three draws and a win together.

Their biggest slice of possession was 47per cent in the scoreless stalemate with Wellington in round three.

In the 2-1 win over Adelaide last round they had just 37per cent of the ball.

‘‘You can look to control the game with the ball, and I really admire the way Brisbane and Adelaide like to play,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘But sometimes that is not necessarily the best way of playing. We have been working on a style that suits the playing group.

‘‘We have been sticking with that pretty diligently and are getting rewards. That builds confidence within the group and hopefully that can keep on getting us results.’’

Postecoglou left the Roar for Melbourne Victory at the start of last season, but Mike Mulvey has continued with the same philosophy.

The Roar travel to Newcastle without Socceroos Matt McKay and Ivan Franjic and injured trio Besart Berisha, Shane Stefanutto and Liam Miller, but van Egmond is expecting little to change.

‘‘We know they will line up in a 4-3-3, playing with two eights but with what personnel remains to be seen,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘If you lose quality it does have an impact, but they have good depth and are not winning the comp by a fluke.’’

Jacob Pepper is on standby for Sam Gallaway (knee) at left back in the only likely change to the Jets.

Marquee striker Emile Heskey is set to again start on the bench in his second game back from a knee injury.

‘‘Sammy has been carrying his knee a little bit,’’ van Egmond said. ‘‘We will assess him tomorrow.

‘‘Peps had a very good game against Sydney [at left back] in the pre-season and has done quite well at training.’’

Pepper is one of 12 Jets players on the free agents’ list, which has attracted media attention this week.

Regulars Connor Chapman, Adam Taggart, Ben Kantarovski, Heskey and Kew Jaliens are also off contract.

‘‘Hopefully they can be finalised sooner rather than later,’’ van Egmond said.

‘‘The club has a good idea on who they are keen to retain. The process is under way.

‘‘It would be good to get it done, but it is not necessarily that easy, especially with the fact you have a salary cap.

‘‘The fans want to see us retain the best talent, the talent we have been investing in.

‘‘If you are going through barren years, you want to ensure you are getting something out of it down the track.’’

The Jets were yesterday linked to a move for Roar attacking duo Berisha and Dimi Petratos.

‘‘You would have to talk to the club about players who have been specifically targeted,’ van Egmond said.

‘‘In general it is the same players most clubs have targeted.’’

Van Egmond is also off contract and, although he would prefer to have finalised his future, said it was not his priority.

‘‘Coaches are no different to players in that they want to sort their future out,’’ van Egmond said. ‘‘Everyone has families to care for.

‘‘At the same time it is not something that is taking my focus away from the football team.’’

Supposedly we have averaged 42% possession in the games since that first Sydney game. For a half-interesting 'statistical analysis' of the first 5 rounds of the season, see here:

But come on... they are professional athletes they all want to win, as much as you convince yourself and it sometimes comes across that they don't care, do you truly believe bridges doesn't care if our team loses?
Obviously the "good enough to win" part is the most important.

Another question, have you ever liked a player for no particular reason besides the fact that you just like them?

Van Egmond: Army training the Newcastle Jets' secret weapon
A determined comeback at home to one of the competition's form teams was made possible by an off-season visit to a local military installation, according to the Newcastle boss

Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond believes pre-season army training enabled his team to produce a gritty come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

Newcastle fought back from a goal down to register their second win in succession and climb to third spot on the A-League ladder, and Van Egmond feels some of the mental strength necessary to register such a victory came from their trip to Holsworthy army base earlier this year.

"We did a few things during the pre-season to help the boys with their mentality and one of those was going to Holsworthy and I don't think they'll ever do anything as hard as that," Van Egmond said after the win over the Roar.

"It really gave them a good basis. They are pretty determined, they really want to have a successful season this year and it was great to see.

"It was a really tough situation for them – it really did test them in a lot of ways. It was great in them getting an understanding of what goes on in an army barracks and it was very tough.

"We always take from those experiences, or from something else, and apply it to the situation you have in the game and it is good to fall back on those experiences some times."

The only sour point of the match for the Jets was a red card to key defender Kew Jaliens, who was sent off for dissent late in the match, reacting angrily after a challenge on Jets skipper Ruben Zadkovich. Jaliens' dismissal means he will be suspended for next week's clash against the Heart at Hunter Stadium.

"It looked to me to be a decent foul on Ruben and the frustration of that boiled over late in the game, but these things happen, emotion gets high in these games," Van Egmond said.

"But you don't want anyone sent off, in particular for dissent, but it is an emotional game and he (Jaliens) has been fantastic for us all this year."

Brisbane coach Mike Mulvey said he would not be singling any of his players out for blame after defensive errors from skipper Matt Smith and his fellow centre-back James Donachie let the Jets claim all three points.

"We win together, we lose together," he said.

"The thing about the goals is that it is a collective effort. Both goals started further up the park.

"So what we need to do is regroup – we pick each other up when we are down and we pat each other on the back when we are doing well. We have great character in the group, so that won't be a problem."

In Saturday’s Herald Gary van Egmond was quoted as saying ‘‘you can look to control the game with the ball, and I really admire the way Brisbane and Adelaide like to play’’, he then added ‘‘but sometimes that is not necessarily the best way of playing. We have been working on a style that suits the playing group’’.

Hallelujah! And a warm hello to Kasey Wehrman, Francis Jeffers and others, and warm welcome back to a multitude of ‘‘experts’’ who were previously out of touch with ‘‘modern football’’.

Jets training ready to take on Heart: photos

ALREADY without the suspended Kew Jaliens, the Jets are in danger of losing defensive partner Connor Chapman to an ankle injury for the home clash against a desperate Melbourne Heart on Sunday.

Chapman rolled his ankle in the first half of the Jets’ come-from-behind 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar. The 19-year-old completed the game but missed training yesterday and will have scans today.

Jacob Pepper partnered Taylor Regan in the centre of defence at yesterday’s session, which was moved to Tomaree from a waterlogged Ray Watt Oval.

Against the Roar, Pepper covered at left back for Sam Gallaway, who trained yesterday and is set to return.

An Achilles heel for the past three seasons, the Jets’ defence has improved significantly under the direction and organisation of Jaliens, who was outed for one game for dissent.

Coincidently, referees boss Ben Wilson was in Newcastle yesterday for one of the regular briefing sessions he conducts with clubs throughout the year.

Captain Ruben Zadkovich conceded Jaliens’s suspension was a blow, but he was adamant they had ample cover.

‘‘Kew is a fantastic player and has really cemented our back line and made us hard to break down,’’ Zadkovich said.

‘‘He is a big loss, but I have every faith in the players in the squad.

‘‘Someone like Taylor Regan, a local boy, has proved many a time that when he is called upon, he will do the job.’’

The Heart, who are set to be boosted by the inclusion of Harry Kewell, sit bottom of the ladder on two points and have not won on the road in 16 games, dating back nearly two years.

‘‘It is hard to predict how they will play,’’ Zadkovich said.

‘‘What they have been doing isn’t working for them. They might throw something totally different at us. We have to be ready for everything.

‘‘These are the games that can be tricky sometimes when you have teams down the bottom of the ladder. They are unpredictable.

‘‘Sydney totally dominated them [last round], but Melbourne Heart looked off that day. In previous weeks, I have watched them lose, but they played really well.

‘‘First half against Brisbane was a good example. They were unlucky not to go in front.

‘‘There have been times when they played really nice stuff and also times, like last week, when they played pretty poor.’’

The Jets were alongside the Heart three weeks ago but have exploded into form and up the ladder with a 2-all draw against champions Central Coast and consecutive 2-1 wins over Adelaide and Brisbane.

‘‘We never lost the belief,’’ Zadkovich said. ‘‘Now we are starting to get rewards.

‘‘Now is also the time you really need to turn the screw.

‘‘We have to get our heads down and keep pushing and pushing and pushing.

‘‘All we have had is two wins in a row, and it doesn’t really mean much come the end of the season.

‘‘We know how important the game is this weekend.

‘‘It gives us a chance to cement the results we had in the previous weeks and really push on with it.’’

Confident Kanta back in business

By TOM LOGAN

BEN Kantarovski, whose physicality has been crucial to his game, is back tackling hard and growing in confidence after a nightmare run of injuries.

The 21-year-old Jets midfielder tore an anterior cruciate ligament seven months before the 2011 Under-20 World Cup.

He recovered to captain Australia in the first two matches of the tournament but was substituted both times in the second half.

He watched from the bench in the third and final group game as Australia crashed out.

Kantarovski returned to Newcastle but struggled for confidence during the 2011-2012 A-League season.

He played only four games last season before surgery to repair a torn meniscus then a broken jaw ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

But he impressed in the pre-season this year and has muscled his way into the starting side at the expense of Zenon Caravella.

Kantarovski believes he is more experienced in dealing with injuries after the setbacks in his short career.

‘‘My knee is pretty much back to 100 per cent,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s now feeling the same before I had my first injury setback and I have put in a lot of hard work in the last year to get it right and it is now paying dividends.’’

It’s been a long time coming for the Novocastrian, who was strong in midfield in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Brisbane, despite picking up his third yellow card of the season.

He credits his form to a full pre-season uninterrupted by national team commitments.

Kantarovski is not fazed by the suspension of Dutchman Kew Jaliens for Sunday’s match against Heart.

‘‘At the moment we have about two to three players fighting for each position.’’

Closer and closer to a Mitchell return...

I think Pepper will get a CB run before Mitchell. However, I don't kow if that would be the wisest choice.

Mitchell and Regan have been the central defence pairing for the youth team so far this season, haven't they? If they end up being the pairing at least they will have spent some playing time together.

Central Coast Mariners are pleased to confirm that foundation player Wayne O’Sullivan has re-joined the Club as Assistant Coach to freshly promoted Mariners boss, Phil Moss.

One of the fan’s favourite players in the early years of the Hyundai A-League, O’Sullivan played 47 competitive matches for the Mariners between 2005 and 2007, and has signed on with the Club until, at minimum, the completion of the 2014/15 campaign.

Once a proud and passionate player for the Club, O’Sullivan brings a wealth of knowledge to the Mariners having enjoyed a long and successful professional playing career in England, Wales, Singapore and Australia. He has also held senior coaching positions at Wellington Phoenix (Assistant Coach) and Newcastle Jets (Head Coach – Westfield W-League).

O’Sullivan, or ‘Sully’ as he is widely known, will commence official duties with the Club next week and will take his place on the bench next to Moss for the first time when the Mariners host Melbourne Victory at Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium on Friday 29 November.

Today O’Sullivan said he is happy to be back at the Club where his Hyundai A-League journey commenced.

“It’s obviously a really exciting time for me,” he said. “It’s been six-and-a-half years since I’ve been here, so I am very excited to be back.”

“My first impression is that the culture here has gone way beyond what we were first part of. It’s gone to a professional level that is way beyond where we were, and this facility [the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence] is incredible. It’s been nice to come back and see some of the players I played with in the early years, too.”

O’Sullivan added that despite feeling fulfilled by his most recent work with Northern NSW Football and the Newcastle Jets’ Academy pathway, he has always had a desire to be involved at the top level of the game in Australia again.

“After my time with Wellington I had the opportunity to work in youth development, and I didn’t see myself going that way originally,” he explained. “I always felt myself being involved in this level of football. While my time in youth development was very rewarding, this is really where I’d like to be. The whole day to day activity and the weekend game situation really drives me.”

Central Coast Mariners Head Coach, Phil Moss, said the addition of O’Sullivan, who lives locally and has a genuine passion for the region, is a coup for the defending Hyundai A-League Champions.

“We are delighted to secure a coach of Sully’s quality,” Moss said. “He brings a fresh face to the staff and to the dressing room, and as a former Mariners player he has the Club culture running through his veins.”

“With previous experience as an A-League Assistant Coach under Ricki Herbert at Wellington Phoenix, I think he will bring a lot to what we are doing at the Club.”

“I’m really looking forward to working closely with him, as I know the rest of the staff and players are,” he said.

Central Coast Mariners Group General Manager, Mr Peter Turnbull, said O’Sullivan was the Club’s preferred candidate to assist Moss when it became clear that Graham Arnold was to make the switch to Japan’s Vegalta Sendai.

“We wanted good support for Mossy, but also minimal disruption to the Club,” Turnbull said. “To appoint an outstanding ex-Mariner was decided early on. Wayne is tremendously popular with the players and the fans, and has the right experience and qualifications, so he was the natural choice.”

“We wish Wayne well, know he can do the job, and have full confidence that he will make an excellent contribution to the Club once again,” he said.

Central Coast Mariners Foxtel National Youth League Coach, Patrick Zwaanswijk, will assist Moss, Andrew Clark and John Crawley this Saturday as the Mariners take on Perth Glory in Western Australia.

The quicker NNSW gets FootballHQ or whatever they want to call it into Newcastle, the better football (juniors/seniors/jerks) will be in NNSW.

Yeah, wasn't the rumour (possibly on here pre meltdown?) that he was considered fairly knowledgable tactically but an awful man manager? Doesn't sound like the person you want managing young players...

Of course, the only rumours I have ever trusted is the one I used to buy clothes at in Carrington.

A PILOT project next week could lead to the A-League following the lead of the European Champions League and using extra referees behind each goal.

Acutely aware of the continued criticism of refereeing standards in the A-League, A-League bosses will experiment at next week's State Institute Challenge in Canberra with the extra officials, assistant referees who monitor the play in the penalty area.

Though the concept has been used in the Champions League and European championship games since 2010-11, and in the Europa League two years before that, Football Federation Australia wants its own evaluation - and if it's judged a success, is likely to become a preferred option in the effort to raise officiating standards.

UEFA introduced the extra officials as the brainchild of president Michel Platini, as a more wide-ranging solution than goal line technology in the context of appraising key incidents.

A video by UEFA referees chief Pierluigi Collina uses the closed-circuit audio between officials to demonstrate the assistants advising the referees on penalty calls, corners and diving as well as whether the ball had crossed the line in disputed goals.

It's also meant to allow the existing assistant referees to concentrate on getting off-side calls correct and not also look for other fouls.

Australian refereeing bosses have noted that it could be used as a quick and relatively inexpensive way of helping A-League referees, who have come under fire for not keeping pace with the increased professionalism of the competition.

A major review has been ongoing for months examining myriad ways of improving the quality of referees here, and is likely to recommend the introduction of a group of four to five professional and full-time referees when its completed next year.

But A-League boss Damien De Bohun said the extra officials would also become a serious option if the trial proved successful.

"Clearly we're not going to the trouble of running a pilot like this just for theoretical reasons, if it seems to improve the quality of decision-making then it becomes something we'll look at seriously," he said.

"I can't say to you now that we have a specific date by which it will be introduced, but it's a really, really interesting option for us to consider.

"Ultimately it all comes down to improving the quality and accuracy of the decisions taken at key moments that affect games. Having an extra pair of eyes for the referee could well help in that respect."

Both FIFA and the English Premier League have opted to introduce goal line technology, but that has been ruled out here on cost grounds.

On another note why not just get ADP as head of referees.

He spends enough time reffing games anyway

yeah Furns, the 'middleby out' thing is just a piss take. when i do have an issue with him/the club i actually do get all serious and stuff.
like now:
My problem with the one year deal is that it seems to be the 'perfect deal' for the player and not really a great deal for the club. in fairness trying to balance that is difficult. couple this with the ryan griffiths deal and it just seems that the best interests of the club are not always the priority.and like it or not that is Middlebys job.
what was the outcome of the one year deal for the club?
we now have zero leverage in any attempt to cash in on him should he get an O/S offer, i dont think thats a great result for the club.
we now have a striker that is potentially a world cup bolter (and at least one of the best younguns in australia) that is only here for another 15 months. what happened to our "investment in youth"? taggart is about as much of a 'cant miss' as any of the young kids we've got (along with Chapman and Kanta). if you are going to gamble on any of them you would offer him big coin to stay at least 2 years with a mandatory get out clause. A-League wages are sweet f/a in real world football terms so any club that truly targeted him would easily pay up.
i know Middleby will never explain the reasoning (and nor should he), but it just pains me to consistently see the other clubs cashing on on their talent moving away and we now seem to have the best crop of youngsters ever and arent giving ourselves any chance of reaping any rewards for it.
anyway, having said that of course im happy to see him resign for another year, id just be happier to see that club cover their ass a bit better.

I honestly think the 1-year thing is Taggart and his Agent's brainchild.

It allows him a bit of freedom if things go to shit, he isn't tied down here (not that he should feel that way, we as a club have never stood in the way of a big move for any player). I would hope that the Jets management wanted to sign him for at least 2 more years, but kudos to them for getting at least some extension over the line.

Thats the way I saw it, "Taggerts agent says, yep he will resign, but only for one year". he obviously has desire to head OS, and doesn't want to get bogged down by a transfer negotiation, fair enough. So then the club has a choice, take the one year extension, or turn him away for another a-league club to snap him up for a year.

If that was how it panned out, it was the best outcome the club could get in this scenario.

It could be said that running the club in a manner that supports young players moving on to better things will actually help attract better young players.

Milligan got approached by palace, Melbourne said no. How many players wanting to push themselves overseas are going to jump at a contract with Melbourne as apposed to a club with a real sense of helping players progress to better things.

It will take ten years to see if this works though.

Yeah? You seen his KPIs? They seem more like what you as a fan want rather than what tinks might want.

How about we just for one day celebrate signing just about the hottest young talent in the a league? Shit, we've even done it twice.

And finally, what manager worth their salt is going to sign up a potential world cup bolter 8 months before the biggest shop window in world football to a long term contract with a possible restrictive transfer fee?

The way I see it, taggz just about had us over a barrel, we probably got all we could out of him.

Agreed.

If his form turns out to be a flash in the pan, won't it look like a genius move. If not, we have got another year out of him. How many players have had a stellar start to their career, signed long deals and accounted to nothing.

I think the tides are turning with young players moving overseas as well. Look at Amini, Nathan Burns, Zullo, Djite, Sarota and Holland who took either a very long time to establish themselves or failed and returned to the A-League. It might not be as appealing because they tore up the A-League in their own right but didn't make it overseas.

Lets not forget Taggz has only just come into form, and only due to Heskey being injured. Not many people were clamouring for him to be resigned until he finally started scoring some goals.
A 1 year deal is a good outcome imo, we could very well have lost him to Sydney or he could have gone back to Perth.

And someone posted earlier that a rumour is around that GVE will be moving into the Emerging Jets program at the end of the season anyway, this may be the reason these re-signings are starting to get sorted now. Because another rumour that was around a few weeks back is that the Jets had already sounded out a replacement when GVE's neck was on the block.

As for Solari we do have Adam Pearce on the books. Big kid for his age must be about 6"4. Local enough believe he is from Forster way. Played a fair few 1st grade games in the NBN last winter though only 16 and probably a little green for HAL level.

Question really is whether how high powers that be rate him and whether a year or two in the Emerging Jets NYL as first choice is the go or bringing him on a little slower with Solari ahead of him is right
