Television ratings behind move to play A-League grand final on a Sunday

THE A-League grand final will be a Sunday showpiece at least until 2017.
The clubs were told yesterday that this year's grand final will be held on Sunday April 21, with a 5pm kick-off.
It's understood that the success of previous years when it has been held on a Sunday - especially Brisbane's two consecutive home successes in 2011 and 2012 - mean it will be locked in for the duration of the new TV deal.
Sunday grand finals for the A-League have always rated more strongly than Saturday games, and it's believed host broadcaster Fox Sports had strongly lobbied for a Sunday finale to the season.
The finals of 2009 and 2010 were both on Saturdays and the latter, a clash between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC which should have rated highly, struggled for viewers.
Those Saturday games struggled against both NRL and Super 15 games, though ironically this year the weekend of the A-League grand final is a rugby league representative round, with a Test on the Friday and City v Country on the Sunday.
Former FFA CEO Ben Buckley was an advocate of a Saturday showpiece for the season, but under David Gallop the Sunday model has prevailed.
The venue for the final won't be known until the previous weekend, with any one of the top five in theory able to host it.
Under the new format, the third-placed team plays the sixth, and fourth v fifth, in the first round of finals, the winners then going forward to face the first and second placed teams a week later.
The highest-ranked winner from that second weekend of games will then host the grand final, which is increasingly likely to be held at Allianz Stadium or AAMI Park if the host is a Melbourne or NSW team.
FFA has put holds on those stadiums after missing out on ANZ Stadium, the MCG and Etihad Stadium to a rock concert and AFL games.
The most difficult scenario for FFA would be for Sydney FC to fight their way to a grand final against the Wanderers, with uproar likely at the prospect of such a game being played at Allianz, the Sky Blues' home ground.
Meanwhile Parramatta Stadium is understood to have missed out on the possibility of hosting games in the Asian Cup, due to the prohibitive cost of bringing it up to international standard.
Two stadia from NSW will be chosen, with those still on the short list including ANZ Stadium, Allianz and Hunter Stadium in Newcastle.
The semi-finals and final will be held in Sydney, with a decision likely on the exact venues by the end of the month.
Can't see Hunter Stadium getting this, they will take one look at the surface and start running, I guess it might actually be our only hope of having the thing fixed up.
Would love to see some vision from the FFA, HSG & venues NSW and see whether they could get some hybrid turf installed as part of the asain cup preparations, similar to the stuff arsenal has, would be a lasting benefit to the HAL & Hunter Stadium.
Loss of Heskey to test Newcastle Jets' bouncebackability

MICHAEL Bridges doesn't try to paper over the loss of teammate Emile Heskey to injury and what his absence will mean for Friday night's crunch game against Perth.
In a bitter irony for the Newcastle Jets, their marquee striker is out of the game with a calf injury just two days after being rested from Sunday's 5-0 debacle against Melbourne Victory to ensure he would be fresh to take on the Glory at Hunter Stadium.
Heskey felt a slight twinge in his calf during a light training session on Monday and alerted the club's medical staff before waking up sore yesterday morning.
"He's never had a calf injury before so it was totally foreign to him," Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.
"He was sore this morning so we sent him off for scans. It's the type of injury you just can't take a risk with but, thankfully, it doesn't appear too serious and he may only miss this game.
"It's disappointing given we rested him against Victory to preserve him for Perth, but who knows? If he had played in Melbourne, he might have damaged it even more."
Bridges, relaxing on a day off, was not aware of his teammate's injury drama when The Daily Telegraph spoke to him yesterday and was hit hard by the news.
"It's devastating, mate - he's a massive loss for us," Bridges said. "We just had a light session yesterday and I didn't realise anything was troubling him. It's a huge game against Perth and it's going to make it tougher without him."
Bridges admits the key to beating Perth will lie in how quickly the Jets' young players put Sunday's loss behind them."They just have to brush it off and forget it," he said. "The key word for us in the next few days now is going to be our bouncebackability.
"That's an English word I'll be using a lot in the next few days. It's going to be about responding to some adversity.
"We need to be positive and upbeat and I'll be taking it on myself to lead the way in that regard. It's going to come down to pride and passion and wanting to be a winner. We are going to find out who wants it bad enough and who doesn't."
Going to be another team short on experience, have got a bad feeling about this game.

Because resilience is too hard a word to spell. Let's run 3 words together to make a new word to explain something that already exists.
Seriously though, when learning about resilience as a Welfare student, they used the example of a ball's ability to bounce back to its original shape after being squashed on impact before bouncing back.

Chapman ready for starting role
Wednesday, 6 March 2013 2:57 PM
Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Connor Chapman is in line to make his return to the Jets starting side against Perth Glory at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.
After missing the Jets’ three previous matches with an ankle injury, Chapman was used as a second-half substitute in the Jets’ loss to Melbourne Victory last weekend.
The suspension of Taylor Regan in that match means Chapman is likely to get the opportunity to come back into the Jets starting side for Friday’s clash with Perth.
“I’m really looking forward to the game on the weekend and if I do start it will be my first starting appearance since I’ve been back, which is something I’ve been waiting for since I got injured,” Chapman said.
“Thanks to our physio Rob Dingle, I was back a lot quicker than most other ankle injuries and it was feeling very strong on the weekend, so that’s a good sign.
“This game is a very big game, not only for me but the whole team.
“I’m looking to cement my spot again and for this weekend, all I can do is work hard for the team and with team success, hopefully my own success will come with that.”
Chapman said the Jets had been quick to put last Sunday’s disappointing result behind them.
“Obviously it was a bit disappointing losing 5-0 on the weekend,” Chapman said.
“I think for all the boys it’s good to have a quick turnaround to try and get that out of our system.
“I don’t think you can focus too much on a loss, it’s more about trying to get past it and look forward to the next game.
“It’s a home game and we’re still three games out from the finals and of course anything is possible in the A-League.
“But I think we’ve got a very good side here, we’ve got a lot of depth and if we got out there and play how we can play, we’ll have no problems.”
While some have questioned the ability of the Jets’ young squad to handle a pressure-packed race for a finals spot, Chapman said he had full confidence that he and his teammates are up to the task.
“Obviously it was a young side on the weekend and it was a tough test against a very strong Melbourne side,” Chapman said.
“You can be 19 or 31, but basically the best players are (going to be) playing. I think for this weekend if we all go out there and play our best we should be able to win.”
The 18-year-old pointed to the experience gained by himself and the likes of Adam Taggart, Josh Brillante and Mitch Cooper while playing for the Young Socceroos as an example of their ability to thrive in pressure situations.
“We played a lot of tough games going away to Asia and trying to qualify for World Cups, “ he explained.
“One of the biggest games of our lives was trying to qualify in that quarterfinal (at the AFC U-19 Championships).
“If you can’t handle the pressure then I don’t think you can be a footballer. Pressure just comes with the game and you have to handle it.”

Luca$h is out with injury. Bet no one saw that coming...
McFlynn resigned, Necevski resigned, Triantis resigned.
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1143188/McFlynn-locked-in-for-another-season
Sydney FC's announcement it has re-signed three players was dampened by news Lucas Neill will miss this week's clash against Mariners with a minor calf tear.
Neill set for home debutPopovic expects even better next seasonBurns back in time for Perth pushPressure on ahead of Neill's home debut
Neill, who turns 35 on Saturday, has played two matches for the Sky Blues since signing a short-term deal for the club in February.
The Australia captain's absence for the crucial match overshadowed the news the club has re-signed Terry McFlynn on a one-year contract extension, plus exciting youngster Peter Triantis and goalkeeper Ivan Necevski as coach Frank Farina looks to build his squad for the 2013-2014 season.
The re-signing of McFlynn will see the 31-year-old remain with Sydney FC for a ninth season as he edges towards becoming the first player to play 200 competitive matches for the club.
"I'm excited to be staying at Sydney FC for next season," McFlynn said.
"I have always said that I will be at this football club as long as I'm wanted and I'm looking forward to continuing to give everything for Sydney FC.
"Nine years ago Sydney FC gave me a chance in Australia and I love this club. I'm happy my future is settled for next season so I can concentrate on the next four matches as we try to qualify for the finals."
While McFlynn continues Sydney FC's ties to its foundation squad, the elevation of Triantis to the A-League squad is just reward for the 21-year-old, who has played 10 A-League matches after starting the season as a member of the National Youth League squad.
Triantis has signed a two-year contract with Sydney FC through to the end of the 2014-2015 season and becomes the 15th player to sign an A-League contract for the Sky Blues from the youth team.
"This is a special day for me and my family," said Triantis, whose older brother Chris was the captain of the inaugural Sydney FC youth team.
"I've really enjoyed myself at the club this year and worked hard to get some game time in the A-League after starting the season in the youth team.
"Now I want to make sure I continue to learn and grow as a player and help Sydney FC move back to the top of the A-League."
Goalkeeper Necevski rounds out the triple signing after agreeing to a one-year extension to his Sydney FC career. The 33-year-old joined Sydney FC in 2007 and has played 42 A-League games.
"Sydney is my home city and I'm happy to be staying with Sydney FC for another season," Necevski said.
Sydney FC has now signed 16 players for the 2013-2014 season, as well as contracted NYL players Daniel Petkovski and Hagi Gligor, as Farina looks to fill up to seven remaining places on the roster

Article in the smh today about some changes the FFA are contemplating for next season. Couldn't be bothered linking because the smh website is now a steaming pile of dogshit, but the key points are:
- FFA looking at bringing in the goal-line assistants like in the Champions League. They looked at goal-line technology first but the costs are too high for the time being.
- Retarded plastic seats for the coaches + subs will be no more. Fast-tracking the installation of covered dug-outs in stadia which don't already have them. Covered benches are a requirement for the 2015 Asian Cup.
- The number of subs available is likely to increase to 5, 1 more than is currently allowed.

Ya, pretty silly how long it took for such small but necessary to occur.
Article said that the clubs originally wanted 7 (as is the international standard), but the FFA would wait and see how 5 goes.
More subs = more opportunities for young players in my eyes. Gives coaches more flexibility in putting a youth teamer on the bench as a wildcard option.

Its always annoyed me just for the simple fact that coaches cannot prepare for multiple possibilities of how a much may turn out in terms of needing to throw on extra backs, mids or forward. Coaches have to just lucky dip a plan and hope the game goes as they think it will.

This. It means instead of having your best 4 (or 6) other options on the bench, you put your 3 ok but versatile options to account for everything.
6 (inc keeper) would be the perfect bench size imo. 1 keeper, 1 defender, 1 midfielder, 1 striker who would be your first choices in their respective positions, and then 2 young guys who would be there for that 80th minute super-sub appearance, or that "we're cruising in this game, give the young guy a go".
a bigger bench also gives our crowd more chances to scream & clap for bridges too
Article said that the clubs originally wanted 7 .
ghey. Will just mean more players are disappointed that they didnt get on the pitch and will hate coach and want a release.

it should be 6 or so bench. that way, after the game the subs who barely got a run can be put through a training session.
if I were a contracted player id rather be warming up with the squad, being apart of the game atmosphere, and have a training afterwards as opposed to suiting up in the stands tbh

One out, one back for desperate Jets
PLAYMAKER Zenon Caravella is on track to return for the Jets' must-win game against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night, but the campaign is almost certainly over for Sam Gallaway.
The 20-year-old left back, who has been arguably the find of the season, aggravated a knee problem at training on Sunday and is likely to need surgery.
Gallaway damaged the meniscus in his left knee when caught in an illegal challenge during the 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix.
He sat out the 5-0 loss to Melbourne and 2-1 loss to Perth Glory on Friday and was hopeful of being right for the Reds game.
Craig Goodwin, who has played most of the season as left winger, had a strong game at left back against the Glory and is favoured to get the nod again.
Caravella has also been sidelined since the Wellington win.
He trained away from the main group, but coach Gary van Egmond was confident he would be involved against Adelaide, whom he left in January to join the Jets.
"His return would be a nice boost, not just from the point of view of his ability but also his experience," he said.
The Jets remain in the six on 30 points but have played two more than the Melbourne Heart, who are at home to Adelaide Monday night.
After Adelaide, the Jets have a week off before hosting Western Sydney on the final day of the season.
"On any day anyone can beat anyone, and we know what we have to do," van Egmond said.
"Both teams are in the top four. It won't be easy, but it's doable.
"I don't think there are too many things we have to get right - it is more so in some ways concentration and that front third."
Van Egmond said it was vital that the Jets quickly put the last-gasp defeat to Perth behind them.
"Training was spirited today, which was how we wanted it," he said. "It is not an easy thing to bounce back from a loss like that. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves. I thought it was a very good performance against Perth."
It was not just about performance but about "the effectiveness of winning the match", he said.
"There were areas where we weren't good enough for the whole 90 minutes."

Gallaway to have arthroscope
Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Sam Gallaway will have an arthroscope on his injured left knee on Thursday.
Gallaway sustained a lateral meniscus tear in his knee following a tackle from Corey Gameiro in the Jets’ 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium a fortnight ago.
“With it being so close to the end of the season, we attempted to manage Sam’s knee to try and get him through the remaining games,” Newcastle Jets Physiotherapist Rob Dingle explained.
“However, his knee wasn’t responding to the treatment, so an arthroscope was the next course of action.”
Gallaway is expected to be sidelined for between four to six weeks.
The 20-year-old, who was in the midst of enjoying hsi best A-League season to date, said it was extremely disappointing to sustain an injury at such a crucial point of the season.
“It’s pretty disappointing to be injured, especially with so many important games coming up,” Gallaway said.
“I’m just hoping for the best for the boys. Fingers crossed they can make the finals and from there anything can happen.”

SWISS defender Dominik Ritter has called a new one-year deal tabled by the Jets "not good enough" and is likely to return to Europe at the end of the A-League campaign.
See your ad here
The 23-year-old left-sided defender is one of five Jets players whose future remains up in the air.
Reborn striker Michael Bridges is in talks about a dual role that includes working with the Emerging Jets Program.
Negotiations are also continuing with marquee striker Emile Heskey.
Brazilian Bernardo Ribeiro and striker Marko Jesic, who have featured sparingly, are unlikely to be offered new deals.
Ritter, 23, has made 16 appearances, the last four in the centre of defence, since joining the Jets from Swiss club Winterthur and is keen to stay.
"We had discussions and the club made an offer but it was not quite what I was looking for, especially with my situation as a foreign player and being from the other side of the world," he said.
"I told the club I can't and will not accept the offer."
The Jets policy is not to discuss contract talks but sources have told the Herald that the offer was an upgrade on his current deal.
"If they come up with another offer in a couple of weeks we will see," he said.
"All I know is that the offer they made was not good enough for me.
"Of course I am looking to further my career and keep playing football.
"If it is not here in Newcastle, if it is not in Australia, somewhere else in Europe. But everything is still open, there is no final decision yet."
Ritter has two games, both must-win encounters, to convince coach Gary van Egmond that he is worth more money.
After starting the season at left back, he is now the preferred partner for Connor Chapman in the heart of defence.
"For me, it really doesn't matter if I play left back or left stopper," he said.
"I have played both positions all through my career.
"When you play centre back, you have the whole game in front of you.
"There is no line, you have to play both sides. As a fullback you can attack more and it is completely different.
"I have played both positions, so it's no problem."
Ritter said the Jets had bounced back well from the last-gasp 2-1 loss to the Glory.
"We have to stay focused," he said. "We need two wins to make the finals.
"Of course, we have to look at the game and what went wrong. But we have to look forward and take confidence into the next game."

Captain Ruben Zadkovich and Bridges did not train on Sunday and were on light duties on Monday.
However, they are not in doubt for Friday's crunch match at Hindmarsh Stadium.
"It is a matter of making sure they are fresh," Jets assistant coach Craig Deans said. "For Ruben, especially, it has been a long year. The amount of work he gets through week to week."
Zenon Caravella continued his progress back from a hamstring injury and will resume full training tomorrow.

People blowing their stack at GVE and our shitty team then suggesting we should throw what ever money is needed to sign someone who is a pass mark player.
I am right behind HSG on this. I don't think we should pay overs for this bloke. Matter of fact I think we could probably afford to let him go.
I think we need our foreigners to be much better than what we have in Australia and this bloke ain't MUCH BETTER

I agree with the point that our imports should be good, and not throw money at players. As for letting him go, I think he's been one of our more consistent performers this season. If we can replace him with better quality, great. If not, I would prefer to keep him. I have really been impressed with him. And if it comes between Ritter and another foreigner, would prefer Ritter. Better the devil you know, than the devil you don't.

As much as I would love to see the back end of Mitchell I believe he is still contracted for another season and good luck finding some idiot to take him off our hands. You can even add Scotty Neville to your list that bloke has been shit also
Regardless of how much money has been freed up by Jobe and Ryan Griffos departures why should we be offering this bloke better terms. From what I have seen he has shown he is alright at HAL level but is no better than average. That being the case we should be only paying him what he is worth and not a penny more. Seem to remember paying a bloke more than he was worth resulted in us sacking off Topor and we all know how well that has panned out so why throw the cheque book at Dom??
What money that has been freed up should be spent on paying for a few players that will give us some CLASS in midfield ie maybe someone like Nicky Carle (To ease the Smurfs impending Salary Cap Issues!!!) or some other random unknown who will tear up the HAL
This bit about good lefties are hard to find is ridiculous. Last off season we sacked off another foreigner in Byun who had proved to be of a similar levels for the HAL as Ritter. Even the idiots at Jets HQ with their disastrous foreign transfer record can find lefties of average ability from somewhere in the world. HAL would have a degree of salary parity at present with League One level in England so I am sure we could find some Pommy left back to fill the job if necessary
Also considering how shitful our season has become shouldn't we REALLY be making plans to sign players better than the likes of Dom Ritter to give us that kick arse squad that goes up the league table rather than settling for another season of mediocrity as seems to be our way in recent times???
Midfield, why not Mitch Nichols ?. Seems to be not a happy camper at the minute.

This bloke is average at best and ain't the world beater we WANT/NEED
It just seems the way with jets fans.
We complain that our team is always shit, year after year, when they under perform.
Yet when we release players or dont resign them, everyone blows up and asks why?
Jobe is average
R.Griff massively under performed the whole time he was here.
Ritter has been decent, but decent is not good enough for a foreigner, and even more so not good enough to earn a pay rise!
Let him go i say!
I do realise it means we have to sign someone better and management are horrendous at signing great a-league players but that does not mean we should settle for mediocrity!

The question then is...he has an increased offer. What does he think he deserves and does he deserve it ? He is useful but he has not been a regular starter and has not set the world on fire.
I've read and re-read the article and where does it say Ritter is unhappy with the wage offered? Apart from the bit where the Herald itself says "convince GVE he is worth more wages", there isn't a quote from Ritter saying he wants more money. For me, the bit that seems to be the sticking point is the one year deal, particularly as a foreign player on the other side of the world.
I've been a pretty harsh critic of him on here, especially when watching him at left back... but then again, I don't think we have had many good fullback performances all season, so pretty sure it's not the players faults (except maybe Neville). I wouldn't be disappointed if he wasn't re-signed but likewise wouldn't be disappointed if we kept hold of him.
an improved offer could mean they're giving him 3 sets of training gear as opposed to 2 for next year.
until it is public knowledge the coin/terms he is on, the coin/terms he's being offered, etc - we know sfa.
if how hsg handled brockie's re-negotiations is anything to go by, I daresay the offer put forward by the jets is an insult to Ritter.
I think he's great btw - how many other 23 year olds in the Hal are available & keen to sign for us that are as versatile, useful & good as him? would rather re-sign Ritter than let gve take another shit gamble tbh

Ideal squad for next season would be:
Biraz
Brilllante, Chapz, Ritterz, Goodwunz
Zadz, Caravella
Top Winger, Bridges/Coopz, Top Winger
Eskey
Dugandzic and Ramsay's contracts both expire at end of the season would be good on the wing. And if Taggart learns to play there he'd be pretty good aswell because of his pace

Bridges re-signs with the Jets
The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have re-signed Michael Bridges to a one-year playing contract. Bridges' agreement includes involvement with the Emerging Jets program in the Jets off-season.
After arriving at the Jets midway through the 2009/10 season, Bridges quickly developed into a favourite amongst the Club’s Members and supporters.
"We are delighted Michael has re-signed with the Club for next season, and in addition, to have him involved with our Juniors is a major boost for our region," CEO Robbie Middleby said.
The former English Premier League striker has made 51 A-League appearances for Newcastle during his four seasons at the Club, scoring 10 goals.
“I’m delighted to be able to spend another season playing at the Jets,” Bridges said.
“My family and I are very happy in Newcastle and we love the lifestyle here, so it’s great to settle down and have my future sorted.”
The 34-year-old said he has never felt fitter and is confident he can continue to be a big contributor to the Jets both on and off the park.
“I’m my biggest critic and I’ve said since day one of pre-season that I’ve never felt this fit, never felt this strong,” Bridges said.
“Thankfully I got the chance to show that. I’m playing better football and looking leaner and fitter than I was when I arrived three years ago.
“Hopefully I can pass on some wisdom and some knowledge and help bring our younger players along.”
Stay tuned for more!
Wonder if the gypos have a Jerks lols go in here thread. This season must be great for them.

Agreed. I am just thoroughly bored by the whole operation.
I suspect there ain't much oil in the old well, and signing kids is the only option. Heskey paid for by your old mate Lowy through some complex funding deal, but the rest paid for by the crumbs left over from the Patinack sale. What a job Harvey did on the big fella...

A dream learning experience for Taggart
Newcastle Jets striker Adam Taggart is not yet 20 years old but already has had the good fortune of being able to learn from four of the best in his position.
Taggart told The World Game how lucky he felt about having previously been a team-mate of Robbie Fowler and Shane Smeltz at Perth Glory, and now Emile Heskey and Michael Bridges at the Jets.
He said it was a grounding any young striker would love to get and that he had tried to make the most of it at the two clubs.
"That sort of learning experience is something you can't buy," Taggart said. "I started off with Robbie at the Glory, and as someone who looked up to him as a kid I thought that was fantastic. I watched him closely and borrowed from his game.
"Next, Shane Smeltz joined the club. He's an unbelieveable finisher, and the way he positions his body in certain situations was something I picked up on.
"All of these guys are great strikers, but there's something different about each of them.
"Heskey does a lot of things a young striker can learn from. He's so good at putting himself between the ball and the defender, and keeping it away from them.
"And his movement in the box is so clever. He makes great runs, but you can also bounce off him with a one-two.
"Bridges is all about the little twists and turns, to try to get away from defenders. He's always trying to get forward when he gets the ball, and I think that's a massively important thing for me to learn.
"He's always looking for someone to feed the ball to, off his runs, so you try to stay alive for him."
Taggart said that while he had learned a lot from being on the field alongside players who had such huge reputations, it was their generous attitude off the field that really struck him.
"They are all pretty humble, considering what they've done in their careers," the Socceroos forward, who played in the EAFF East Asian Cup qualifying tournament, said.
"And that's been an important thing for me to see because it teaches you a lot about how you should act as a footballer.
"Each of them has done a lot to help me, especially Robbie.
"I was only 17 when I started at the Glory and I was so nervous I wasn't even game to talk to Robbie, but he eased me in and I felt the pressure go down.
"He helped me a lot with my game."
With such esteemed peers offering their assistance, Taggart has wasted few opportunities to spend as much time as possible in their company.
"All four of them have been really good to me," he said.
"They've taught me a lot about football and I know I've been lucky to have that experience.
"I've hung out a bit with them away from training and playing as well, and when they start talking about football, and their experiences, it's fascinating."
Taggart is still only 19. He doesn't turn 20 until 2 June, just before he will represent Australia at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.
He is looking forward to playing there, alongside on-loan Wellington Phoenix forward Corey Gameiro, but is desperately hoping to get some finals football in with Newcastle first.
The Jets are one of the five teams locked in a dogfight for the last two available places in the A-League finals series, and will play Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday.
Newcastle is sixth, level on points with fifth-placed Sydney FC, one ahead of Brisbane Roar, two ahead of Perth Glory and three ahead of Melbourne Heart, but has played one game more than all of those teams.
Taggart said the Jets have simply got to aim at winning their last two games and hoping that is enough to get through.
"We really needed to get the three points against Perth last weekend, to make sure of things," he said.
"But, although we dominated the game, we didn't get anything out of it and that was really disappointing.
"It makes the next two games massive. The way the comp is, if we win both of them it will probably be enough, so it's all up to us now."

Evergreen Newcastle Jets forward Michael Bridges signs new one-year deal with club

MICHAEL Bridges' Lazarus-like comeback at the age of 34 was complete yesterday after he was re-signed by the Newcastle Jets for a further season.
Now, after resurrecting his own career, his mission becomes saving the club's play-off hopes in Adelaide tonight.
After a shattering loss to Perth a week ago, the Jets sit precariously inside the top six, a point clear of Brisbane and two points ahead of Perth.
But they have just two games left to play while their chief rivals have three so they can't afford to slip up against Adelaide tonight or Western Sydney in the final round.
Bridges will be crucial if the visitors are to advance their cause with marquee striker Emile Heskey still sidelined through injury.
"This game is must-win. We have to get results. We know what we have to do," Bridges said before the squad left Newcastle yesterday.
"Looking back at the Perth game, I thought we played some fantastic football and created a lot of chances.
"We just didn't finish them so if we can go with the same mentally and create the chances and play the football we're trying to aspire to, we'll go down there and get a result for sure."
Jets fans will be hoping the club's decision to hand the popular Bridges a new contract will provide the former England playmaker with an added spur tonight.
His new deal is a reward for his fighting qualities and persistence. Six months ago, Bridges couldn't get a start on the Jets' bench.
Three months ago, he was told by coach Gary van Egmond he wasn't in the club's plans, fullstop.
He put his house on the market thinking if he couldn't get a start with another A-League club, returning to England was a real possibility.
"If I look back six months ago, I would never have seen this coming," he said. "You start doubting it (playing again) but I stuck in with hard work and carried on.
"Hopefully, I've set an example to the young boys in that if you are not getting a game and you are not involved, you work hard and you don't become a bad egg off the park and you stick at it.
"You are always going to get opportunities through suspensions, through injuries. One man's pain is another man's gain and you just have to be ready for that opportunity."
Bridges singled out Jets CEO Robbie Middleby and Hunter Sports Group boss Troy Palmer for having faith in him. Last year, he was retired and was working in the marketing department at the club but was desperate to play again.
That only became possible when former teammate Ali Abbas, a visa player at the time, was granted Australian citizenship, allowing Bridges to make a comeback.
The former Leeds striker is hoping to have his own citizenship finalised in September.
Might lend some weight to the suggestions that it was not entirely GVE's call to reinstate Bridges.
Good to see he should only be taking up a squad spot now not a visa spot too, but then you look at the stand out quality of our imports and well does GVE really need another spot to waste...

It has happened at other clubs, I'm not sure but someone here should know.
kevin muscat was payed as both a player and an assistant coach at some point in his victory contract. the ratio of cap-payments to coaching-payments i have no idea about though.
it was "well known" that bridges was on 180k prior to his retirement, and was stated by "in the know" people regularly that when he un-retired he was on the same wage, but getting paid the minimum amount in salary cap & the rest as his business development officer or whatever role he had. apparently when he came back this year he, again, was on 180k. but robbie middleby confirmed in his q&a recently that when he signed as a player this time around he no longer had that behind-the-scenes job, which leads me to believe he was getting his normal wage fully in the cap (and we struggle with salary cap each year, in case you haven't heard robbie middleby say it 50 times by now).
tl;dr - they can somehow split wages between cap payments & off-field jobs. i have an inkling it'd be easier for sydney to get away with it as opposed to newcastle, but that's just a hunch.

Important Member announcement for Round 27
The Newcastle Jets, following consultation with the FFA, Newcastle Police and Hunter Venues, is required to upgrade a number of Reserved Memberships for the Round 27 fixture between the Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers at Hunter Stadium.
After lengthy discussions between all parties, Members seated in the Eastern Grandstand bays 8, 9, 10, 19, 20, 21 and 22 will be contacted this week and advised about the upgrade.
The upgrade for Members was required to make provisions for the large numbers expected to travel from the Wanderers’ supporter base.
“We have been in discussions with the FFA, Newcastle Police and Hunter Stadium for a number of weeks about accommodating the estimated 6,000 plus supporters that will travel for this game at Hunter Stadium," CEO Robbie Middleby said.
"This was a decision agreed upon by all parties and one that has been undertaken with the best interests of our Members to ensure they enjoy the final home game of the season."
Upgraded Members will receive a match day ticket this week and are being allocated seats within close proximity to those they are usually seated near.
Members who are seated in these stated bays and don’t receive their upgraded tickets by Friday March 22 should contact PROticket, who are managing this process on behalf of the Newcastle Jets. PROticket can be contacted on 1300 12 10 12.
“We thank our Members for their support and look forward to seeing them all at our final home game of the season on Friday March 29,” Middleby added.
NOTE: Wanderers' fans attending the Round 27 game at Hunter Stadium need to contact their Club to secure their ticket.

Mariners miss player payments
Amid their best efforts to compete for honours in the A-League and Asian Champions League, players and staff of the Central Coast Mariners have had their wages delayed for the second time this season.
Those on the Mariners payroll were due to be paid last Thursday but when the players arrived back on Friday from their midweek game against Kashiwa Reysol in Tokyo, their fortnightly salary still hadn't gone through.
The players have been told their wages should be processed on Tuesday and that wages will be on time for the rest of the season.
A-League boss Damien De Bohun said he had ''no concerns'' over the club's long-term future and didn't believe it would prove too disruptive to its campaign.
''Central Coast are going through some different issues in terms of their ownership, which we are working through,'' he said.
''From our perspective, it's just something that's gone out by a couple of days and [should] get resolved very quickly.
''We are working closely with the club … there's no change and we will keep working with the club, and that will all get sorted out very quickly.''
Mariners' majority owner Peter Turnbull has recently been in discussions with two different Asian investors about selling the club and the FFA confirmed the Gosford-based club was closing in on a deal.
''Yes, they are - no question about that,'' De Bohun said. ''The work they are doing behind the scenes continues to be very positive. Central Coast are one of the great stories of the A-League.''
■ Melbourne Victory's Ange Postecoglou has been named coach of the A-League All Stars for the match against Manchester United at ANZ Stadium on July 20.
Postecoglou won 36.8 per cent of the public vote for the position - 0.6 per cent more than Western Sydney's Tony Popovic.
Public voting for the team will run until the end of April.
Manchester United has promised to send a full-strength team, including the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

Central Coast Mariners players go unpaid in cash crisis
Tom Smithies
The Daily Telegraph
March 19, 2013 12:00AM
A CHANGE of ownership is imminent at the Central Coast Mariners with existing shareholder Mike Charlesworth having made an offer to assume control in the wake of the club being late with players' salaries.
It emerged yesterday that Graham Arnold's squad, as well as the club's administrative staff, were not paid last Friday on the scheduled date, with the promise that the wages would be paid today.
But it's understood that after Football Federation Australia last week declined further financial assistance pending resolution of the ownership issue, the club is in serious trouble having sought loans from various parties in recent days including the Central Coast Football Association.
Now Charlesworth, an Englishman who bought into the club three years ago, has proposed putting in a substantial new tranche of money to secure the club's future, becoming the controlling interest in the process.
The deal would require the approval of chairman Peter Turnbull and Wanderers chairman Lyall Gorman, whose shareholding is a hangover from his role in establishing the club and running it from 2004 to 2010, when he was appointed to head the A-League.
Turnbull, Gorman and Charlesworth jointly own 64 per cent of the club, according to ASIC records, through the investment trust that owns the club's Centre of Excellence at Tuggerah.
The financially stricken club, desperately chasing the Wanderers for the Premier's Plate on the field, also continue to seek fresh investment from overseas to combat legacy debts including a seven-figure sum owed to the Australian Tax Office.
The club has also been told that one of its key sponsors, Primo Smallgoods, will not renew its deal next season.
Last night Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull insisted all salaries would be paid today, though he declined to comment on the possibility of a change of ownership.
"Everyone knows the A-League clubs are continually running at a deficit, and we always have contingency plans to handle that," he said.
"Unfortunately we were a couple of days late with the players' wages but we have been upfront with them and they will be paid tomorrow (Tuesday) as promised."
From June 1 the clubs get their annual grant from FFA effectively doubled to cover the salary cap of $2.5 million under the new TV deal.
The club's situation was not helped by the poor crowd of 7225 at Sunday's 1-0 win over Brisbane, which kept alive Arnold's hopes of overtaking the Wanderers in the last two rounds of the season.
There was some good news for the Mariners as they prepare to face Adelaide on Sunday, with United's Argentine playmaker Marcelo Carrusca set to miss the game due to a groin injury.
Can see Primo going to wanders, Gorman is over there and they are a western sydney company.
How much assistance have they been getting, did they ever repay the money given for them to start up in the first place, seems a bit rich for the three of them to own the COE and still be running around crying poor.
All Stars are aligning for Ange Postecoglou

ANGE Postecoglou has some big decisions ahead of him as he prepares for the visit of Manchester United - tactics, training routines, selections and a special bottle of red.
Sir Alex Ferguson's post-match debrief with the opposing manager over a glass of wine has become a celebrated tradition, and Postecoglou intends to maintain it after being selected as the coach of the A-League All-Stars XI to face the Red Devils on July 20.
Postecoglou landed the role just ahead of Tony Popovic - polling 36.8 per cent of about 15,000 votes, to the Western Sydney boss's 36.2 per cent, with Graham Arnold in third on 15 per cent.
The Melbourne Victory coach will make certain there's a bottle of something appropriate for after the game, after forgetting 13 years ago when his South Melbourne side lost 2-0 to United at the Club World Cup of 2000. And he's equally keen to secure a better result, not least as a fervent Liverpool supporter.
"It is a tradition and I failed to do that in Brazil - to my detriment, because he was very kind to me with his time, so I'll make sure I arrange something," Postecoglou said yesterday.
"It's a thrill, one of those moments in life when having been raised here in Australia and done all your footy here, you get to coach against Sir Alex Ferguson. It's the unique nature of our game.
"I love the challenge, it's why I coach - the mundane or the routine is not why I've been doing it for so long."
Voting for the players has opened and runs to the end of April, with the squad to be selected on a weighted basis - 50 per cent the online poll, 20 per cent each to an expert panel and the players' union vote, plus 10 per cent for Postecoglou, who can also pick three wildcards himself.
"I'm trying to cast myself forward to the kind of players who'll get voted for, and as a coach you have to be excited by that," he said.
"As well as the guys like Del Piero, you've got Berisha, Broich, Hersi - there's some fantastic foreign talent, then you watch the games at the weekend and Terry Antonis was outstanding, Bernie Ibini, emerging guys who you want to see in the Socceroos. They'll want to test themselves against the best in the world. Now I've just got to find some defenders to make sure we can balance it all up."
The complication Postecoglou must juggle is Holger Osieck's need to select a Socceroos squad for the East Asian Cup in July, with a heavy proportion of A-League players likely.
"I think about the same time as I'm putting names together, he (Osieck) will select maybe 25 people, so we'll have a fair idea.
"With the inclusion of great foreigners, the Aussie players who just miss out on the Socceroos are probably the right ones for us."
Sounds like the "All Stars" might just be the "Left Overs", so I guess that might increase our chances of having a player selected.
Might be a better idea if newy fans just nominate a Hunter wine for post match.

NEWCASTLE Jets officials will spend the next 10 days rallying support for the club's final home game of the season on Friday week to ensure they are not out-numbered by Wanderers fans at Hunter Stadium in their bid for a play-offs berth.
The Jets are still clinging to sixth spot but that could change leading into the final round with Newcastle not playing this week.
The scenario is simple enough.
They will almost certainly have to beat Western Sydney and hope other results go their way to qualify.
Wanderers may also have to win their final regular-season game to clinch the minor premiership, ensuring an army of fans will travel up the F3 for the clash.
"We are expecting somewhere between 6000 to 8000 Wanderers fans will be at Hunter Stadium for the game," Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said yesterday.
"We are making plans now to upgrade a number of our members seating-wise to accommodate the travelling supporters. So we are going to need 10,000 plus Jets fans there to drown them out and get our boys home."
The Jets will be buoyed by the return of marquee striker Emile Heskey for the game.
Heskey has missed the past three matches but has recovered from a slight calf tear and will rejoin the squad at training next week.
News just in 6000-8000 is now larger then 12,628 (our 2012-13 average), I know the circle jerk around anything wanderers is not new but seriously its getting to ridiculous levels now where simple mathematics is even thrown out the window.

The Australian understands Primo Smallgoods, which has supported the club for the past three seasons and is its back-of-shirt sponsor, will shift allegiance to new A-League club Western Sydney.
Primo is owned by Paul Lederer, now chairman of Western Sydney. Lederer is reportedly worth $400 million and is regularly included on BRW's top 200 rich list.
Primo's sponsorship is believed to be worth about $250,000 a season to the Mariners, who have struggled to keep their head above water despite being one of the most successful clubs in the history of the A-League on the field.

Newcastle Jets in grand final mode ahead of clash with potential all-or-nothing clash with Western Sydney Wanderers

NEWCASTLE have gone into early "grand final mode" to prepare for a potential Good Friday do-or-die clash with Western Sydney in the A-League's final round at Hunter Stadium.
The Jets are clinging to sixth spot but are helpless to improve their position this weekend because they don't play.
Instead, there is every likelihood they may find themselves on the outside of the top six looking in by the end of the weekend if results don't go their way.
But coach Gary van Egmond remains confident a win over the Wanderers in the final round will be enough for his side to sneak into the finals and says the club is taking a grand final approach during the extended build-up.
"For us, it's a huge game," he said.
"The most important part for us is to get into the finals. It is very similar to a grand final approach. They are the games you really want to play in.
"You never know when it's going to occur (finals football) so you have to take the opportunity when it arises."
Van Egmond admitted there was frustration the club's finals fate is not totally in their own hands, with results over the past fortnight not going the Jets' way, despite some good displays.
"Performance-wise, I think we have been really good, especially in the past four or five games," he said. "It is good to play good football but we want to win. It's about winning."
May as well pretend it is one, it's the closest we'll get to a grand final.
Tim Cahill says Socceroos must adopt high tempo approach against Oman in World Cup qualifier

Tim Cahill says the Socceroos must go hard at Oman in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night. Source: AFP
SOCCEROOS stalwart Tim Cahill has said Australia must play a high-tempo game and make Oman feel unwelcome in next week's vital World Cup qualifier.
Australia go into Tuesday's ANZ Stadium clash in second spot in their group, trailing leaders Japan by eight points and ahead of Oman and Iraq only on goal difference.
Following the Oman match, the Socceroos' road to next year's showpiece in Brazil resumes in June when they travel to Japan before hosting Jordan and Iraq with only the top two teams in the group securing a World Cup berth.
Enjoying life with New York Red Bulls in the American Major League Soccer, Cahill, 33, looms as a key cog again in the Socceroo machine.
He said Australia had, in Robbie Kruse, Alex Brosque and Brett Holman, the players capable of prising open an obdurate Oman defence in Sydney.
Cahill said he hoped they would supply plenty of crosses, allowing him to lead an aerial assault.
He said he was happy to play a more advanced role up forward than he does for his club.
"I feel it's important if I lead the line, that it needs to be high tempo, high energy," Cahill said.
"I know international games can be a little bit more relaxed and slow-tempo, but it has to be high-tempo from us and making sure we pressurise them and make them feel unwelcome in our stadium, because they will be under a lot of pressure to get a result and they will be playing very deep."
Cahill said some of the younger Socceroos could "really find their feet in the squad" by performing well in a World Cup qualifier.
"This is where you have got to shine. Shine here and the whole world sees it," he said. "I really hope that some of these lads can take their chance and help this transitional period for the Socceroos."
Geelong has emerged as the potential saviour of the A-League's Central Coast, with a consortium considering a takeover and relocation of the struggling Mariners.
Geelong City Council has supported the bid, with Geelong's credentials to host its own national team due to be discussed tonight.
A redeveloped stadium, major investment in infrastructure and growing support in the area have been cited by supporters of a Geelong club.

Melbourne group to take over Mariners
A majority of the Central Coast Mariners board has agreed to sell the club to a Melbourne-based consortium, consisting of three South Melbourne directors, for $4 million.
The World Game understands the deal was agreed on Wednesday, with a 10 percent deposit due on Thursday.
It was reported in The Australian that a member of the Mariners board flew to Melbourne on Wednesday to meet with an interested party, while a Russia-based investor is still keen pump $15 million into the club and it's valuable land assets.
It is believed key Mariners investors, Peter Turnbull, Lyall Gorman and Mike Charlesworth, who own a 64 percent stake in the club, had been stalling with a view to wooing the Russian group.
The new arrangement would see the Mariners relocate three of their home matches - those perceived to draw the lowest gate - to Melbourne.
The news is set to come as a relief to the embattled playing group, which has been emroiled in a dispute with the club over unpaod wages. The existing Mariners board met with representatives of Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) on Thursdayin an attempt to resolve the matter.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) is yet to ratify the agreement but is believed to be satisfied with the nature of the deal.

THE majority owners of the Central Coast Mariners FC have today confirmed that agreement has been reached on a recapitalisation of the club.
Discussions involving Mike Charlesworth, Peter Turnbull and Lyall Gorman concluded late today with agreement in principal reached. Documentation of the agreement is underway.
The agreement will see Mike Charlesworth, an existing major investor, make a substantial fresh investment into the Mariners.
The injection of funds will allow the immediate payment of players, coaches and staff. In addition, the funds will allow the Mariners to implement business plans to continue the growth of the club.
Mariners Chairman Peter Turnbull has welcomed today’s agreement and thanked his fellow investors for working towards a sustainable future.
“Mike, Lyall and I have always placed top priority on the good of the Mariners and Central Coast football,” said Turnbull.
“The club is an integral part of the Central Coast region and we are determined to build a strong and stable club.
“In particular, I pay tribute to Lyall for his achievements in establishing the club. This agreement will see Lyall sever his formal ties with the Mariners, but he’ll always have a special place in the club.”
Turnbull has hailed the new investment by Mike Charlesworth as a turning point.
“Mike is a football man, like the rest of us, and he has a great passion for the game and the Mariners. Today’s agreement means the Mariners legacy will only get stronger.

How fitting the Gypo overlord makes his quids that way,
Haliti heads back to old stomping ground
By JAMES GARDINER
March 26, 2013, 11 p.m.
LABINOT Haliti never wanted to leave the Newcastle Jets. The Kosovo-born refugee was part of the fabric.
He spent four years over two stints and played 69 games for the Jets, each appearance played with the fervour of a man appreciating a second chance at life.
He had affinity with the Hunter faithful that was matched by only a few.
He loved the passion they showed in the stands. They loved the pride he displayed on the pitch.
The 27-year-old couldn't imagine being anywhere else. Then he joined Western Sydney.
"That is the beauty of this game," Haliti said.
"Newcastle was a good place. I still have mates there and a close connection to the city.
"But this is something else. The people of western Sydney needed a club. You can see the passion.
"It has only been eight or nine months and the people are all wearing the jerseys and all come.
"Every game, every training, they support you. It is a buzz to be a part of."
Haliti is one of six former Jets to have red and black now coursing through his veins. He, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and former club captain Tarek Elrich were surplus to requirements as coach Gary van Egmond went about rebuilding his roster at the end of last season.
The trio were joined at Parramatta by 2007-08 championship winners Mark Bridge, Ante Covic and Adam D'Apuzzo.
All six are expected to feature when Wanderers travel up the freeway on Good Friday determined to put an exclamation mark on a fairytale season.
A point is all the visitors need to take the Premiers Plate back to Parramatta Stadium, or Wanderland as it has become known.
The Jets need three points to keep their play-off hopes alive.
After an eight-week spell watching from the stands, Haliti has become a central figure in the Wanderers drive towards the premiership. His seven appearances in the starting side have reaped five goals, highlighted by a brace in the 3-1 win over Melbourne Heart in round 25 that set a new record for consecutive wins.
"All the goals have been big goals," Haliti said.
"They are not goals that have come when it is 4-0 or 5-0. They have been goals in tight games, away games. You put in the hard yards, do all the right things and hopefully they pay off. I always said goals will come.
"As long as you get given a chance the rest will come.
"I always believed in myself."
It was a similar scenario at the Jets where many of Haliti's goals came in the big moments - late equalisers or winners.
"When you get the chance in a big game, on a big stage, you have to be ready to take it," he said.
Good Friday will be a case in point.
Haliti, who is in talks about a new contract, was relegated to the bench for the 1-all draw in the derby against Sydney FC.
He hopes to be reinstalled to the starting side but is not overly concerned.
"It is a squad game. As long as I can contribute I am happy," he said.
Haliti was confident from the moment he arrived at Wanderers that they would be successful.
"A lot of people wrote us off," he said.
"We knew inside the squad that we were capable. How far could we go? That is a different question."

Problems emerge for grounded kids
By CRAIG KERRY
March 26, 2013, 11 p.m.
THE region's best 13-18 years soccer players will be homeless come this Saturday.
In a situation that highlights the need for a dedicated facility for elite teams, the Emerging Jets game-training phase teams will hand over use of Col Curran Playing Fields at Wallsend to the Plattsburg-Maryland club on Saturday.
The Emerging Jets sides have been training three nights at the grounds and were hoping to stay there for the rest of their maiden season. Plattsburg-Maryland were expected to take up use of the new $15 million sports complex and community centre at Fletcher, which includes two football fields, leaving the Jets to retain rights over the Wallsend fields.
However, a Newcastle City Council spokeswoman said amendments to the management plan for the site meant it was unlikely to be available for use until June at the earliest.
Northern NSW Football chief executive David Eland said Newcastle and Lake Macquarie City Councils were helping to find a new home for the Emerging Jets but "you cannot get blood out of a stone".
He said the situation was frustrating.
"From what I understand, there's a great football facility there ready to go but it is likely out of use for the season," Eland said. "It highlights why we need a facility for our elite kids.
"We will find somewhere but I can almost guarantee they won't be at the same venue on each night and the teams are probably going to be split up as well, which is not right. The game training phase is all about the opportunity for them to play games against each other."
Eland said the lack of suitable grounds in the region put NNSWF in a difficult position.
"Plattsburg-Maryland are going gangbusters this year with 40 teams and they have to train somewhere," he said. "Our community clubs are bursting at the seams and we are being forced to compete with them for ground allocations."
NNSWF are awaiting word from the state government about their application for $7.3 million in funding for a proposed $11.3 million regional football facility at Speers Point Park.
Eland said NNSWF were lobbying the state government but had yet to receive a response to their request for a meeting with premier Barry O'Farrell.
The skills acquisition Emerging Jets teams, which cover under 10s to under 13s, train at Wallarah Oval in New Lambton and are not affected by the older squads' difficulties.
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/1391713/problems-emerge-for-grounded-kids/?cs=306
Good to see the governments investing in that fantastic community facility down south, its really doing wonders, $9m in the hole and they are still screaming for more cash, can't see northern getting a dime.
Goal-line technology tipped for use in 2015 Asian Cup
Val Migliaccio
The Advertiser
March 26, 2013 10:30PM
AUSTRALIA is destined to become just the second nation to host goal-line technology in a major FIFA-sanctioned tournament when it hosts the 2015 Asian Cup.
Asian Football Confederation officials told The Advertiser goal-line technology will be considered for the tournament after SA failed to lure Asian Cup football to Adelaide.
AFC will decide whether the electronic strategy has its merits for the Asian Cup despite FIFA committing to the technology during the Confederations Cup in June and next year's FIFA World Cup which are both hosted in Brazil.
"AFC has been fully studying all options and will choose the best way for betterment of football matches in consultation with referees committee," stated an AFC official.
Meanwhile, SA must court cashed up 2015 Asian Cup nations in a bid to host camps and international friendly matches.
Adelaide has a chance to attract Japan - the 2011 champion - for Asian Cup pre competition camps.
But it's up to the State Government and Football Federation SA to sell a package to the football-mad nation which is expected to attract thousands of travelling Japanese fans and a huge media scrum to Australia.
But whether the A-League season comes to a grinding halt during the January 2015 AFC Asian Cup tournament rests on a Football Federation Australia decision.
The Asian Cup's Local Organising Committee (LOC) will today announce where matches will be played in the biggest Asian confederation championship outside the FIFA World Cup.
LOC's Alison Hill - general manager for government relations and communications - says Adelaide has a great chance to host Asian nations before the tournament kicks off.
"We're coming up with a shortlist of potential training sites and pre competitions camps," Hill said yesterday.
"What we think will happen is nations will come to Australia about two to three weeks before the tournament to train.
"To assist the nations with their preparation is what the LOC is doing.
"We're coming up with a list of potential sites and access to good hotels and we'll come down a list of 32 preferred sites and we'll look at providing that too them. Countries will make their own decisions."
Hill also said the LOC is destined to meet FFA officials to discuss the logistics surrounding the viability of playing the A-League alongside the Asian Cup in 2015.
"Ultimately it will be an FFA decision but we'll work closely with them," Hill said.
The 2015 Asian Cup runs for four weekends and 23 days with 32 matches in stadia in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and ACT.
Would be good to see them install these and then potentially have it as a legacy benefit for the HAL, or even get it pushed forward 12 months for testing purposes during the HAL season.
Newcastle set to be Asian Cup host
By BEN SMEE and JAMES GARDINER
March 26, 2013, 11 p.m.
NEWCASTLE is expected to be announced as a host venue for the 2015 Asian Cup soccer tournament, including a potential blockbuster Socceroos match at Hunter Stadium.
The tournament venues and schedule are set to be announced by the organising committee on Wednesday.
The Newcastle Herald understands Newcastle has been earmarked to host group fixtures and would provide an attractive training base for international sides.
An Asian Football Confederation delegation visited Newcastle in January to inspect match and training facilities.
As well as a host venue, participating countries are also expected to use the regions as a training base in the lead up to the tournament.
In terms of economic impact, the benefits to the Hunter Region would be enormous. Thousands of fans would travel with players and support staff for each of the 16 teams.
Qualified countries will not be confirmed until March next year. The Socceroos qualify automatically.
The $61-million tournament is being jointly funded by federal and state governments.

^ Yeah same, I thought that was decided in the bidding stage and we were out of it. Good news if true, might want to postpone any motocross tournaments though.
Football Federation Australia has received inquiries from potential bidders in Australia and overseas for Western Sydney Wanderers, which have taken the A-League’s top position in their maiden season in the* *competition.
FFA’s ownership of the club arises from its hasty formation last year after the demise of Gold Coast United.
FFA chief executive David Gallop told The Australian Financial Review the organisation would look to sell the Wanderers, probably next year. The club could be worth up to $20 million.
“Our intention is to sell it, but there is no rush,” he said. “Yes, we have had approaches from here and abroad for the club but they have been preliminary approaches.
“We are still deciding on what [sale] model is best. It could be that we look at a hybrid model where there is some sort of fan ownership involvement.”
Top spot on the ladder means the Wanderers would play in the Asian Champions League next year.
In a major change, Mr Gallop confirmed that two Australian teams would automatically qualify for the group stages in Asia in 2014 (the second automatic qualifier will be decided during the A-League finals beginning on April 5). It is a boost for the Australian competition, given only one automatic qualifier, the Central Coast Mariners, competed in this year’s ACL.
That became an embarrassment to the FFA, which lost the second spot after negotiations with the Asian Football Confederation last year.
A third A-League team could make the ACL group stages should it win a qualifying play-off early next year.
Mr Gallop said that, as the Wanderers had performed well above expectations this year, the club’s financial performance would similarly be better than first thought. The club is set to record a loss of about $1 million, compared with the $1.5 million to $2 million forecast at the beginning of the season.
Costs have been kept relatively low because the playing squad was originally signed only on one-year contracts.
“There’s no doubt the Wanderers have been the most successful club in any Australian sport this year,” Mr Gallop said. “From a standing start last April they have been such a success it seems they have been part of the competition for a decade, rather than just a few months.”
He said much of the Wanderers’ off-field success – including attracting average crowds of 12,000-plus for their home matches and capped by a sell-out crowd of almost 20,000 for the derby against Sydney FC on Saturday night – had been due to them engaging early with their fans.
Research from sports consultancy Gemba shows new teams in markets that compete with established rivals, as the Wanderers have with Sydney FC, may have fewer fans but have more hard-core supporters providing a higher income yield per spectator as they spend more money on membership, tickets and merchandise.
The Wanderers have also helped boost overall A-League supporter numbers. With one week of the regular season to go, attendances are up 16 per cent on 2011-12, and viewers on Fox Sports Australia have increased by about 25 per cent. Club membership figures are up 17 per cent.
The 2012-13 A-League grand final will take place on April 21, following two weeks of finals matches...

$20 million? lol.
Did that figure come from the combined losses of the A-League for a season?

MILAN (AP) — Italy's Serie B is introducing a salary cap to help stave off financial crisis for its 22 clubs.
Under the system approved Tuesday, contracts signed by players starting July 1 will have a maximum value of €300,000 ($385,000) per season before taxes — divided into a maximum of €150,000 ($190,000) for the fixed part of the contract and a maximum of €150,000 ($190,000) in bonuses.
Serie B president Andrea Abodi says the new rules represent "further steps forward toward financial sustainability of our clubs."
Clubs that violate the cap will receive penalties on their shared income, such as TV revenues. Also, clubs whose youth teams reach the final eight each season will receive monetary prizes.
One in four Serie B players currently have salaries beyond the cap.
Interesting.

Familiar route for driven Tsatsimas
By JAMES GARDINER
March 27, 2013, 11 p.m
A FRAMED Newcastle Jets jersey hangs proudly on the wall at the Parramatta home of Western Sydney Wanderers general manager John Tsatsimas.
Tsatsimas was at the helm of the Jets for their crowning moment, a 1-0 triumph over arch rivals Central Coast Mariners in the 2008 grand final, bringing a championship to a proud but success-starved football region for the first time.
Recruited by then owner Con Constantine, Tsatsimas, the Jets former legal counsel, travelled every day from Parramatta to Newcastle and back.
Nowadays the commute is much more palatable.
While the seemingly endless hours on the F3 were tough, his Newcastle experience prepared Tsatsimas for his latest challenge.
"Sport provides you with a spectrum of experiences, both to the left and right," said Tsatsimas, who had more than his share of fires to put out at the Jets headquarters at The Store.
"It gave me a requisite understanding of what I believe works and doesn't work, and as a club collectively what our club should look like and should be doing."
A self-confessed football tragic, Tsatsimas will make the familiar trip north over the Hawkesbury to the Hunter on Friday.
This time, he hopes to return with the Premiers Plate in his possession.
Western Sydney need a point against the Jets to claim the prized piece of silverware, and put another notch on a season that knows no bounds.
"Newcastle holds a special place in my heart," Tsatsimas told the Herald this week.
"I met a lot of great people and made some great friends, who remain friends to this day. I had a lot of good times up there and it would be special from my end.
"Having said that, we are focusing on the three points, and whatever surfaces after that well and good."
Wanderers comprised of two - chairman Lyall Gorman and coach Tony Popovic - when Tsatsimas was recruited in June.
"We wanted to make a story, and make it a good story," he said. "When we did the blueprint we set out to be as successful as we could be.
"We were adamant we could achieve a finals spot. That was a realistic target.
"Moving down the track the boys and the club have done exceptionally well and we are proud of where we are."
There is a distinct Jets flavour to Wanderers.
Apart from Tsatsimas, players Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Adam D'Apuzzo, Mark Bridge, Ante Covic, Tarek Elrich and Labinot Haliti and strength and condition coach Adam Waterson now call Wanderland home.
D'Apuzzo, Bridge, Covic and Elrich were members of the 2008 championship side.
All have become central to Wanderers success.
Covic (26 games), Topor-Stanley (26) and D'Apuzzo (23) form two-thirds of the equal best defence in the league.
Bridge (24) is their leading goal-scorer with nine, plus four assists.
Elrich (8), who is the club captain, and Haliti (16) have had to bide their time to a degree, but both have made the most of recent chances.
Haliti has scored five goals in seven starts, including three in the past four games.
The fact Tsatsimas had worked with the players previously was part of the attraction, especially given the time constraints in assembling a squad.
"We were fortunate enough that we were able to source some players who a) had experience and b) had a lot to prove in their careers and were motivated enough to want to perform at a higher platform," Tsatsimas said.
"Not only were their football talents a prime consideration, but the ancillary aspects of a footballer came into play; their personality, their motivation, their understanding, their contribution to team chemistry.
"All those factors are paramount in recruiting a player.
"They have formed a valuable part of the fabric."
After helping the transition in ownership from the financially embattled Constantine to Nathan Tinkler and the Hunter Sports Group in September 2010, Tsatsimas resigned at the end of the season to spend more time with his family.
Although Wanderers are quickly becoming the biggest club in the country, Tsatsimas's opinion of Newcastle has not changed.
"I would not have swapped my four years in Newcastle for the world, " he said.
"I always said the best place to have a franchise was Newcastle. They are a very educated football public, they are very passionate about their team, and certainly very proud of the team that represents them.
"There was no better franchise in Australia and I was proud to be associated with that first hand. I wish the Newcastle Jets club the very best."
But for now his mind - and heart - are firmly in Western Sydney. 'This club is what football needed," he said.
"It is something that is close to my heart because I was born and bred in the area and never moved, even when I was travelling to Newcastle.
"I am very proud to have a team represent the area at an elite level. In saying that, the Newcastle jersey still adorns my wall at home."

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1145302/Australia-regains-ACL-spot
I do hope this is the case but remember, nowhere in that does it say that we have got the spot back officially.
Who's to say another nation hasn't lifted its score, who's to say that magically they will now have more spots available, after all the only thing that has been confirmed and officially approved about the 2014 ACL is that 23, instead of 10, nations will now be able to nominate for the group stage. Its a rather big jump to say that a nation is going to lose a spot just because we wont lose as many points now, perhaps that might just mean another nation wont lose as many points too.
I wouldn't be surprised to see us get another qualification spot instead of an auto spot, after all we couldn't beat the Thai team earlier in the year and its not like the mariners are going that great in the comp.
So much jumping the gun on this at this point its not funny.
Remember this is all coming from the FFA not AFC & that's the same FFA that didn't get a lobbyist at the last AFC ACL vote because they listed Ben Buckley as their CEO after he resigned months earlier and Gallop was taking over. If the FFA does not know what's happening in its own corridors of power how exactly are they so sure what's happening in the AFC's.
When the Mariners held the first fan forum at the start of the season an advisory group was set up to work to build a closer relationship with the club and give fans an opportunity to raise ideas, concerns and have direct input into how the community/supporter side of the Mariners is looked at.
The group has been working extremely hard to get many things established, but most importantly they saw a need to get an official supporters club up and running. The Central Coast Mariners Official Supporters Club (as it will be known) intends to represent the views of all fans of the Mariners (both active and otherwise, members and non-members) to create a conduit allowing the suggestions and opinions of the fans to be discussed and considered by the club. With Central Coast Mariners staff representatives involved in the group, the basis for a true connection between the club and the fans is being built.
The group includes fans from the “Yellow Army” active support group as well as an excellent cross section of the clubs fan demographic: males and females, from High School students through all ranges of the age demographic and including parents and grandparents.
As the smallest club in the league with the smallest market and perhaps the most limited resources, crowds and atmosphere are always the focuses of negative comments from other A-League club supporters. Although there are other objectives, the fundamental aim of the supporters club centres around these two issues.
So far the group has been responsible for the re-creation of the match day fan march, the announcement of the players’ names and attempts to involve the main crowd in some of the active supporter chants. Mariners match regulars will have noticed these things over recent times and this is just the start of the ideas the supporters club group intends to try.
While still in its early stages of development, it is a great opportunity to get involved now and help make this club something the whole Central Coast community can be proud of.
So, what will the supporters club really be about?
It will be about you, the lifeblood of the Mariners, the supporters. It will be about giving everyone the same equal right to put forward suggestions/ideas on how you would like to see your club move forward.
This club will be setup just like many supporters clubs around the world, where we will have special events running for supporters to get a more hands on feel to how our club runs and an easier way to ask questions of the club and put forward ideas for what you the fans would like to see happen in, and around supporter activity.
The Mariners have long been considered “the community club”. At times it may not have been as strong as it once was, but this is the perfect way to cement us back into the rightful place of the leading community club.
This Saturday, at the last A-League match at Bluetongue Stadium before the finals, the fan group intends to promote the concept by marketing the idea to every fan who attends. Flyers will be handed out to fans at the start of the march at Kibble Park and at the gates as people arrive at the match. The flyer will provide an opportunity for fans to write down their e-mail address and place it into collection boxes as well as including a link to the supporter clubs first web site. As the final steps are taken to form the Central Coast Mariners Official Supporters Club, those who submit their email address or check out the website will be kept up to date with progress towards an official launch expected to be before the beginning of next season.
This is your chance to become involved, show your support and help the Mariners become the best and proudest club in the A-League so don’t miss out.

AS they prepare for today's all-or-nothing battle for a finals berth against Western Sydney, the fight to retain marquee striker Emile Heskey has already been won by the Newcastle Jets.
In a massive boost on the eve of one of the club's biggest games since the 2008 A-League grand final, The Daily Telegraph can reveal Heskey has ended speculation on his future by agreeing to a new one-year deal with the Hunter club.
He is expected to sign a new contract package worth around $750,000 within the next 10 days with only some minor details left to be nutted out between the club and Heskey's lawyers.
The package is said to be worth less than half of what the former England striker could have earned if he'd accepted offers from Asia, the Middle East and Russia.
But Heskey has maintained for quite some time he has loved his time in Newcastle and his first preference was always to remain for another season if he could work something out with the club.
"Money is not the be-all and end-all for me now," Heskey said recently.
Jets CEO Robbie Middleby last night played a straight bat to questioning about the striker's future, refusing to confirm or deny any deal with Heskey has been finalised.
"I can't give you anything concrete about Emile at this stage," Middleby said.
But a well-placed source close to the club was far more forthcoming.
"He's staying. The money's right and the deal's been done," the source said.
"It's just a matter of fixing up a few of the minor details which will be a formality.
"Heskey is planning on going home to England at the end of this season for three months before coming back out in August for the start of pre-season training.
"One of the things he'll be sorting out when he goes back home is his plans for his family.
"They've stayed in England while he's been out here but bringing them back out with him now that he has sorted things out is obviously something he will look at."
Heskey's commitment to the club, coming close on the heels of the re-signing of Michael Bridges, is certain to give the youthful Jets outfit a massive boost today.
After missing the club's past three games, Heskey's presence on the park and combination with Bridges will be crucial if the Jets are to get the outcome they so desire.
It is make or break time for the club.
Nothing short of a victory and the three points will be good enough for the home side, who sit just outside the top six going into the final round.
The fact there is so much at stake with the Wanderers needing a draw to secure the Premier's Plate only adds to the theatre of what should be a pulsating clash.
Boosted by more than 6000 Wanderers fans, officials are optimistic a crowd of more than 20,000 will be at Hunter Stadium.
Adding spice to the contest are the six former Jets players in the visitors' squad.
Good news if true, might also mean GVE is out if those rumours had any weight.

INTER Milan is on the verge of playing a match in Australia this year.
The fixture would be a bonus for soccer fans before Manchester United meets an A-League All Stars side in Sydney in July.
The Advertiser has seen official documents indicating Inter may play a friendly in Australia on May 25 or 26, or June 1 or 2.
But the match will not be played in Adelaide because of the state's soccer stadium dilemma.
Hindmarsh's capacity is too small, Football Park is not FIFA compliant and Adelaide Oval isn't ready to host first-class soccer.
Melbourne is in the box seat, given the city has reportedly knocked back an opportunity to host Manchester United's potential second match in Australia this year.
Melbourne Heart chief executive Scott Munn said his club had been approached to host high-profile Inter.
"We have had contact with regards to Inter Milan but nothing has been set in concrete," Munn said.
The Italian giant will not confirm its Australian tour until April 18.
The side, which features Argentinian stars Javier Zanetti, Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso, Italian striker Antonio Cassano and Japan's Yuto Nagatomo, will be forced to cancel any plans for the Australian tour if it makes the final of the TIM Coppa Italia.
Inter faces AS Roma in the second leg of the Coppa Italia on April 17 at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan.
Roma is leading the tie 2-1 after victory in Rome. The winner will face Lazio in the final on May 28.
Isn't Australia popular this off season.

PRIDE: Ruben Zadkovich.
JETS captain Ruben Zadkovich says Newcastle will be out to make a statement today against Wanderers but does not believe making or missing the finals will define their A-League season.
The Jets need victory in the final-round game at Hunter Stadium to be in the hunt for the play-offs, while the Wanderers need only a draw to guarantee the minor premiership in their maiden season.
Zadkovich said the squad were pumped up for the make-or-break match in front of an expected 18,000 to 20,000 fans but said the result and the Jets' finishing place should not be the only criteria in judging their season.
"It's funny that it comes down to one game," Zadkovich said.
"But I think irrespective of if we make the finals or not, it's been a successful year because we've blooded a lot of young players, players who have a bright future in the game and who will hopefully be Socceroos.
"I think we built for something this year.
"In my eyes it will be a successful season.
"I'm sure for others it will be a bit different.
"Obviously it would be disappointing to not make the finals and it will hurt a lot, but for now I'm staying positive and want to go out there and play with as much pride and passion as I can and show what the squad can do.
"I'm really confident we can get a result, and the rest of it is going to be fate, I guess, and we'll see what happens with the other games. I'm just really focused on us doing our best in front of our fans in the last game for the season. I think it's a great chance to make a statement, irrespective of whether we make the finals.
"It's a great chance to show we're a good side."
The Jets trained yesterday without incident, focusing on their attacking shape and positioning at set pieces as they attempt to end a frustrating run of missed opportunities in front of goal.
While a full-strength Jets look for better finishing, Wanderers have lost several key men to injury.

However, Jets striker Adam Taggart said they remained a dangerous side.
"The loss of a few players will change things for them, especially Ono," he said.
"But at the same time they are a counter-attacking team. If you look at the stats, they never really have the bulk of possession, but they always look dangerous when they are going forward.
"We've done a lot in training this week to make sure we stop their counter."

FACING OFF: The Jets are keen to play Western Sydney Wanderers again, says coach Gary von Egmond.
JETS coach Gary van Egmond does not believe his future hinges on beating Western Sydney Wanderers at Hunter Stadium tonight but said that decision was out of his hands.
See your ad here
The Jets enter the final round in eighth place on 31 points. To sneak into the top six they need to upset the league leaders and have other results go their way.
If they fall short, it will be the third straight year, and second under van Egmond, that the club has failed to feature in the finals.
The past two years they have finished seventh.
After inheriting the squad from sacked coach Branko Culina last season, van Egmond spent the off-season reshaping the roster.
Given a mandate to promote youth, the 2008 championship-winning boss discarded 10 players and brought in a group of highly rated youngsters targeted to carry out an up-tempo possession-based game.
The last-minute recruitment of former England international and target man Emile Heskey forced an adjustment in playing style.
After winning three of the first four games, the Jets have travelled inside the six for all but six rounds.
"People are always going to judge, whether it was on the first year or this year," van Egmond said.
"My position is to ensure we keep on working towards the club philosophy and the vision of the club. Management will decide if they want to keep me on or not.
"I have another year to go [on my contract]. I am looking forward to next year, but first and foremost we have a game this weekend and that is what we are totally focused on."
The Jets are coming off a 2-1 loss to Perth and 1-all draw with Adelaide. They could have earned maximum points from both fixtures and been safely in the six.
They have had two weeks to prepare for their "grand final", and although Heskey returns to add power and height to their front line, van Egmond said they did not have to change a great deal.
"If we keep on doing what we have been doing, we are a real good chance of winning the game," he said.
"We obviously have to convert our chances, but our football has been good.
"For us, the focus is on performance.
"The result is a by-product of the performance. It is so important that our performance is good."
Despite the must-win scenario, van Egmond said they would be foolish to employ an all-out attack.
"I think you have to be a little bit sensible in your approach," he said. "One thing Wanderers are good at is counter-attack football, especially with the likes of Youssouf Hersi and Mark Bridge.
"They get in good little areas and can hurt you. We have to be pretty vigilant in that respect. When we attack our rest defence has to be spot on."

Heskey and fellow former Premier League star Michael Bridges will be in tandem up front for the first time since the drought-breaking 2-1 away triumph over Wellington on February 27, the Jets' last win.
Goalkeeper Mark Birighitti was confident the Jets would rise to the occasion.
"I just want to finish it off," he said. "If it is me making a crucial save or Emile or Bridgey scoring a vital goal, it will be a game of moments, those special moments."

Jets need win - and luck - to get to finals
March 28, 2013, 11:30 p.m.
THE Jets’ destiny is no longer in their own hands after Brisbane Roar locked up one of the two remaining A-League finals places with a 3-1 win over Sydney at Suncorp Stadium last night.
The result means the Jets must beat leaders Western Sydney tonight at Hunter Stadium and rely on Perth not beating Adelaide at home tomorrow night.
Adelaide, who are assured of a home semi-final, have little to play for, but Perth are missing key men Shane Smeltz, Liam Miller and Travis Dodd.
See your ad here
Newcastle (31 points) will jump above Sydney (32) into sixth if they win, but the Jets’ poor goal difference means Perth (31) will grab the last play-off position if they hold their nerve. Sydney will survive only if the Jets don’t win and Perth lose.
Wanderers are expected to bring up to 8000 fans with them tonight to watch the team’s possible crowning as A-League minor premiers.
Jets captain Ruben Zadkovich yesterday echoed recent comments by coach Gary van Egmond when he said that making the finals was not the only measure of success for the club this season.
‘‘I think we built for something this year,’’ he said. ‘‘In my eyes it will be a successful season. I’m sure for others it will be a bit different. I’m really confident we can get a result, and the rest of it is going to be fate.’’

Can see us winning and then Perth storming home and we still miss the finals.

Anyone else sick of this "we're building something" bullshit?
I've no gripes with a five year plan, or even coming 8th if that's the best the current squad could achieve, and plans were in place to build on it.
But this squad should be better than 8th, or scraping into the six. They've underperformed for whatever reason. They should stop trying to hide from it.
Next year we should be building on a comfortable 4th or 5th place finish, not the inconsistent muck they've served up this season.
"Solid foundations" is a smoke screen for a hugely disappointing, underperforming, inconsistent season.
If the squad was full of useless a-league duds like Karl Dodd, tando valaphi and David zdrillic and they were being forced out for better replacements, I could cop it sweet, but we are not, we have some of the best young players in the country (or so we keep being told) and have not met minimum expectations. Other clubs are blooding unknown youngsters and are killing us.
A fish rots from the head.

GvE would be lucky to get a start as kit manager at any other club.

Yep Mitchell Neville BK are great players. Most likely be sold in the off season to some big Euro club like Barca or Real Madrid for big transfer fee.
Tarago Jobe and Griffo all left us to sign for a team no better than us, no one and some Chinese 2nd division team. Hardly world clarsch clubs
As for the rest of our players maybe the team is where they are because they aren't good enough.
We have a lot of young uns who will be better for it next year

You just picked 6 players, who as far as I can tell (I'm unsure about Neville) didn't recently play against Perth or Adelaide, where despite us being unable to score, we actually looked very good - so we definitely have the cattle but as Gary Fish alluded to, for some reason hasn't clicked, or simply taken way too long to show the form we should have seen within the few first rounds.
Why did it take so long for GVE to stop using Mitchell, Tiago and Neville at the back despite us having the worst against in the comp?? Why did it take him so long to drop James Brown when he clearly wasn't up for it, yet Ribeiro barely got a consistent run?? We have/had the players at our disposal, they just haven't been used properly.

I have to take umbrage with this - Any coach would be trying to support his players in this situation. Tell them privately "Keep doing what you have been and the result will come".
If the same manager was to then go and say something different to the media, the players would see/hear it and feel undermined or at the very least, confused.

Neville and Mitchell recruited by the muppet and given to many chances and BK barely figured. We all know there was more to the Griff exit than the club wanted out there for public consumption.
All in all the last two seasons have been a dogs breakfast and that responsibilty lays entirely at the feet of GVE.
I do hope however your post of a couple of weeks ago had some substance to it and the retention of Heskey means GVE will be shown the door and he can return to what he maybe does best selling soft drinks.

Reading todays Tele, several nasty incidents at or after the game on Friday, which were not mentioned in the Herald. I can see the WSW club being in deep shit for a long time, if they survive that long. Gallop talking of docking points, which reading the WSW forum, they think he's bluffing, I don't think so. Boss of WSW says it's only a few bad eggs, I think they've got that many bad eggs that they will never be able to self-police themselves. Quotes the police saying on the whole the crowd was well behaved for its size and the Wanderers Fans would be welcomed back. Essentially makes it clear it is 50-100 idiots trying to wreck it for everyone. States its not considered to be ethnic based.
Really, on the whole the article seemed reasonable. Quotes from a lot of fans who didn't want to be named.
Double standard was that for the first 10 mins or so the police allegedly turned a blind eye to the flares.

Whats the worry??
The RBB have been ripping flares every other game this season and still no sanctions are forth coming.
Would like short odds on them ripping them in their next match and will take anything over and including $1.01 that they will rip them if they make the GF.
The FFA have really dropped the ball on this subject big time
he Australian football community is mourning the loss of Rod Allen, the Western Sydney Wanderers media manager and former FFA head of media relations, who died in an accident early on Sunday.
Allen was 45.
Allen reportedly fell to his death from a clifftop during a birthday party of a former colleague on Cockatoo Island.
His body was found by water police on Sunday morning.
FFA chief David Gallop paid tribute to Allen for his contribution to football, sport and media in Australia.
“Rod had a remarkable career in sports journalism and more recently sports administration and was regarded as an extremely professional and well-respected journalist, editor and media manager," Gallop said.
“His no-nonsense approach to the task at hand was his trademark and many who dealt with him appreciated this dedication to getting the story, hitting deadline or managing an issue.
“He worked through a significant period during his time at FFA which included the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and our bids to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
“Most recently Rod was working with the Western Sydney Wanderers as media manager and was an important member of the club’s staff.
“On behalf of the Australian football community, we offer our deepest condolences to his family during this extremely sad time.”
Allen was present at Hunter Stadium on Friday night to see the Wanderers take out the A-League 2012-2013 Premiers' Plate.
"Football lost a great friend today," Wanderers executive chairman Lyall Gorman said in a statement.
"We have lost a truly wonderful man, an incredible contributor to our club and football for many, many years and more importantly one of our family and a great friend.
"On this day of immense shock and sadness, we remember Rod's wonderful warm nature. Our thoughts are with his beautiful wife Laila and their extended family.
”Our last time together was in the car park at Newcastle on Friday night where we shared a drink and celebrated a wonderful night in our club’s history after winning the Premiers' Plate.
"I am not sure that in the nine years I have known Rod that I have ever seen him happier or prouder when it came to football."
Allen is survived by his wife Laila..

A NEWCASTLE Jets fan said he was walking out of the gates at Hunter Stadium on Friday night when he was suddenly king-hit to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head.
Danny Hersee, 22, from Merewether Heights – a member of the Jets supporter group Zad’s Lads – told the Newcastle Herald he was minding his own business, lamenting his team’s 3-0 loss when the attack occurred.
‘‘I was walking out of the stadium by myself, my mates were a bit further ahead of me, when I heard some of the Western Sydney Wanderers fans cheering and celebrating,’’ he said.
‘‘They started yelling things out to me, abusing me and I said something like: ‘‘yeah good game, you guys won’’.
‘‘Then out of nowhere I was hit in the jaw, which knocked me straight to the ground.
‘‘I just started getting kicked in the head until someone came over and broke it up.’’
Mr Hersee said suffered bruising to his jaw and has been unable to eat since the attack.
Newcastle police chief John Gralton told the Herald that police had charged a man with assault in relation to an incident outside the ground after the match.
Superintendent Gralton had been pleased with the behaviour of the vast majority of the 22,000-plus football fans, after having to make only one arrest and three evictions from Hunter Stadium.

Its probably just more away fans at their games
This. Look at how many fans travelled up from WSW and SFC, and down from us, and thats bound to increase their numbers dramatically.
Central Coast Mariners benefactor Mike Charlesworth is resigned to losing inspirational coach Graham Arnold to Europe sooner rather than later.
Charlesworth has dubbed Arnold – who has operated in a financial straitjacket in his three years at the club amid a stream of forced player fire sales – as the A-League’s top coach.
And he views his graduation to the bigger stage of Europe, where the former Australia player and coach excelled during his days as a striker in the Netherlands and Belgium, as a looming inevitability.
Japan, where Arnold had a spell with Sanfrecce Hiroshima last in his playing career, could be another possible destination for the coach who brought the Premiers’ Plate to the Mariners in 2011-2012.
“It’s just a matter of time before he leaves us, probably for Europe where he would make a very fine coach. It’s probably his destiny,” said Charlesworth.
“We hope that day doesn’t come too soon but we feel that it may not be far off. He deserves the opportunity, if it comes, because he has more than proven himself in the A-League under very challenging circumstances.
“If he's offered a job overseas it would be disappointing to lose him on the one hand and gratifying on the other to know we have acted as a stepping stone for him to further his club coaching career.
”It’s staggering what he has achieved here on such a tight budget.”
Arnold has guided the Mariners to second spot this season, despite the ongoing turmoil over the club’s future and necessity to sell its top talent.
The Mariners missed out on the home-and-away season gong with Western Sydney on Friday night thumping Newcastle Jets 3-0 to snare the Premiers’ Plate.
But they are guaranteed second spot and a home final – no matter what the outcome of Saturday night’s now largely meaningless clash against Melbourne Heart at Bluetongue Stadium.
Englishman Charlesworth, who during the week turned his minority shareholding into a majority ownership to keep the Mariners afloat, added: “In my view Graham is without doubt the best coach in the A-League,
“He has managed to achieve success under the most challenging of financial circumstances at this club and that’s a testament to his talent.
“He has been forced to sell player after player to try and bring money into the club.”
The list of key players lost under Arnold’s tenure includes Tom Rogic, Matt Simon, Mustafa Amini, Alex Wilkinson and Rostyn Griffiths with goalkeeper Mat Ryan and striker Bernie Ibini tipped to join the exodus soon in what Charlesworth admits will be an on-going exit strategy.
“There is no better coach in Australia at nurturing and developing talent and bringing them to the level where they attract the interest of overseas clubs and he deserves great credit for that,” he added.
“Of course he doesn’t want to lose them but understands the financial realities at this club.”
Charlesworth concedes the necessity for the Mariners to ship players offshore is unlikely to change any time soon.
“That probably isn’t going to alter in the near future,” he said.
”We have turned round nearly $3.5 million in transfers in the past four years or so and that’s something which will continue because it’s part of how we raise the money which keeps us going.
“While it’s a shame to lose these players we are also helping them fulfil their dreams of playing overseas and that brings a lot of satisfaction to the club and its coaching and development staff.”
Should Arnold go, Charlesworth insists the culture of the club the former Socceroos forward has helped craft will not be compromised.
“We are a small club with a big heart and Graham has played a big part in building a mentality here which is all about excelling and developing. If he goes that won’t change because that’s now embedded in the club.”
If they want they can have GVE to replace him:whistling:

FIFA chooses GoalControl's goal-line technology

FIFA has committed to using GoalControl goal-line technology at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Source: AP
FIFA opted for GoalControl as its goal-line technology system for the Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup.
The German camera-based, ball-tracking system was the last of four contenders to win a FIFA contract that starts with the Confederations Cup in June.
FIFA chose GoalControl-4D over three rival projects: GoalRef and Cairos, which both use magnetic fields; and Hawk-Eye, another camera system. It's already used in tennis and cricket, and its English parent company was bought by World Cup sponsor Sony Corp. before it began FIFA-endorsed testing in 2011.
GoalControl was licensed by FIFA only one month ago, and owner Dirk Broichhausen said then that its simplicity was key.
"Our innovation, and also a difference looking to other competitors, is that we can use standard goals, balls and nets. There is no modification necessary," Mr Broichhausen said.
GoalControl uses 14 high-speed cameras - seven trained on each goalmouth - and passed FIFA-approved tests in February in German stadiums in Duesseldorf and Gelsenkirchen. All four systems met FIFA's demand that a signal is transmitted to the referee's watch within one second if a goal should be awarded.
"We want to offer tournament organizers and leagues and clubs not to have to change anything on the pitch. The investment in the technology is enough," Mr Broichhausen said
He estimated that GoalControl will cost $US260,000 ($250,000) per stadium to install, and $US3900 per match to operate.
FIFA said the cost of installation - at six scheduled Confederations Cup stadiums and 12 for the World Cup - was considered.
"The respective bids were also judged on cost and project management factors such as staffing and time schedules for installation," soccer's governing body said in a statement.
FIFA's contract with GoalControl for the World Cup can be reviewed if there are problems at the 16-match Confederations Cup - or before.
"The use of GoalControl-4D in Brazil is subject to a final installation test at each stadium where the system will be installed," FIFA said.
FIFA, through its rule-making panel known as IFAB, approved goal-line technology last July, when Hawk-Eye and GoalRef passed the rigorous testing process. Those systems were tested at the Club World Cup in Japan last December, before Cairos and GoalControl had even been licensed.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter wanted goal-line technology in Brazil after England midfielder Frank Lampard had a goal disallowed against Germany at the 2010 World Cup.
Sounds very similar to Hawkeye and how sort of come out of no where, you'd have to be pissed if you were goalref or hawkeye after you did all the lobbying and then miss out to these new start ups who have only existed for a month.

FOOTBALL: Jets say van Egmond not going anywhere
By JAMES GARDINER

Gary van Egmond
HUNTER Sports Group chief executive Troy Palmer last night gave his unequivocal support to Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond and insisted the embattled boss would complete the final year of his contract.
Van Egmond has come under criticism from the Newcastle Herald, other media commentators, fans and members alike after the Jets failed to make the finals for the third straight year and the second under his care.
A season that promised so much ended with a listless 3-0 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers at Hunter Stadium on Friday to finish eighth, 26 points behind the leaders.
The limp exit was the final straw for supporters who bombarded the Herald’s website with calls for the coach to be sacked.
Speaking at the Jets awards night, Palmer hit back at criticism of the club, in particular van Egmond.
‘‘We did not make the finals, we are disappointed at that,’’ Palmer said.
‘‘That is sport, it’s unpredictable.
‘‘For people to criticise and be negative about this club, that hurts me.
‘‘You expect it from outsiders, but when it comes from your local media, your local newspaper, who unfortunately don’t have all the facts, I find it disappointing.
‘‘I’m proud of the people involved in this club, and to be criticised, in particular for someone like our coach Gary, is disappointing.
‘‘Gary is not going anywhere. I’m not going anywhere. The players are not going anywhere.
‘‘We are committed to building on what we worked on this year, and building something that the people of Newcastle can be proud of.’’
Palmer confirmed that marquee striker Emile Heskey had agreed in principle to a new one-year deal, believed to be worth $750,000, which he said was a sign that the club was headed in the right direction.
‘‘We brought one of the legends of the game to Newcastle,’’ Palmer said.
‘‘That is again a massive coup not just for the Jets but the A-League.
‘‘I’m proud to say that he has agreed to be here again next year.
‘‘That is massive compliment to this club, and I think he understands where this club is headed.’’
Heskey, who was one of three finalists, alongside captain Ruben Zadkovich and winner Mark Birighitti, for the player of the year, confirmed his return.
‘‘I will be here next year but I have not officially signed yet,’’ he said.
The 35-year-old former England international was the Jets’ leading goal-scorer with nine.
‘‘I wish I could have scored a few more,’’ he said.
‘‘I would have liked to get in double figures. Hopefully I can do a bit more next season.’’
Van Egmond said the club needed to have ‘‘a good overhaul’’ of its operation.
‘‘Like all businesses we have to do a review and look at what we’ve done well and what we haven’t and start to identify those area and put structures in place to ensure we keep improving,’’ he told the gathering at Merewether Surfhouse. ‘‘We’ve done some reflection already and it hurts quite a bit from the weekend.
‘‘The one thing we’ve already discussed is that last year we turned over 10 to 14 players and this year we won’t have anywhere near that kind of attrition.
‘‘We’re looking at only two-to-three players to come in.’’
Palmer apologised for the absence of his boss and Jets owner Nathan Tinkler, who yesterday put his horse racing empire Patinack Farm up for sale.
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/1405319/football-jets-say-van-egmond-not-going-anywhere/?cs=303
Good news, I only need to skip one season, unless they give him another extension.
Great to see we want to build on what we achieved this year, which was to drop further behind the other clubs & fail to make a 6 team play-off's in a 10 team league for the second straight year.
I'm so happy that success for us is finishing in the bottom half of our league, such ambition.
Can't wait to see our possession stats next year will be so exciting to watch at home as the Foxtel match day app updates. I feel giddy with excitement at being able to check the back passes stat too, if only fox would get off their arse and add a CB possession stat then we would really be talking.
We do need an overhaul, a real big one of the entire clubs management, starting with the coach.
Jumping the gun a bit there about the players not going anywhere, about the only thing that is sure to happen is that players will leave the jets, even more so since GVE returned.
You've got be kidding about the player turn over, after all they weren't gary's players they had to go.I look forward to reading about why gary's recruits need to go this season, some might argue its because GVE is useless at VISA recruitment, but hey I'm sure that's completely off the mark, just look at the records.....
Good to see its not our coaches fault, its everyone else around him as he pointed out so well in his presser the other day, might actually mean the end of deans, with this review & papas leaving India and being available again. After all its not Gary's fault he didn't have his own support staff, assistants.
Is GVE a football head coach or a recruitment officer. Wonder who Gary needs to recruit himself after he has replaced the players, assistants, support staff, what next, do we need garys own hand picked receptionist, cheerleaders, ground announcer, hospitality staff, bus driver maybe his own hand picked owner/s or maybe he'll eventually get around to hand picking a replacement head coach.
FOOTBALL: Birighitti named Jets player of the year

GOALKEEPER Mark Birighitti joined the Newcastle Jets for a chance to break in to the A-League.
The 21-year-old did that and more, capping a fantastic season by being named the Jets player of the year at the club’s awards ceremony at Merewther Surfhouse last night.
Birighitti’s success was one of the positives to emerge for the Jets, who failed to make the finals for a third straight season, finishing eighth.
Birighitti, who was leading the Men of Football player of the year when voting went in camera, headed off challenges from captain Ruben Zadkovich and former Liverpool star and leading goal-scorer Emile Heskey.
It is the second straight year a goalkeeper has taken the top honour after Ben Kennedy made a clean sweep of player of the year and media choice award, which was not presented this season.
Birighitti thanked the Jets coaches and players for their support when receiving the award last night.
‘‘I feel very privileged and honoured to receive such an award,’’ he said.

By the way, that comment was not meant to take anything away from birraz... he had a fantastic year, fully deserved the award and has been a really great signing.
Shame it is only a matter of time until he leaves for bigger and better things!

So Heskey resigns - confirmed now.
The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets are pleased to confirm the official re-signing of marquee striker Emile Heskey for the 2013/14 season.
The former England international made 23 appearances for the Jets in 2012/13 and finished the season as the Club’s leading goal scorer with a personal haul of nine goals.
Heskey’s arrival coincided with the Jets reaching 11,000 Members, the highest in the Club’s history.
The ex-Liverpool striker capped off a stellar debut season in the A-League by being named as one of the finalists for the Jets’ Player of the Year award.
“I’m pleased to be extending my stay in Newcastle for another year,” Heskey said.
“Everyone has made me feel very welcome here and I’ve really enjoyed my first season playing for the Jets.
“I’m looking forward to getting a full pre-season under my belt and helping the team push for a finals place next season.”
Jets head coach Gary van Egmond said he was delighted to have secured the services of Heskey for another year.
“It’s great to have Emile here for another season,” van Egmond said.
“He brings a wealth of experience to our squad with everything he’s achieved in his career.
“His performances in his first season with us were excellent and we’re looking forward to seeing more of the same from him next year.”
Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said Heskey’s decision to re-sign with the Jets was a coup for the Club.
“The impact Emile has made at the Jets both on and off the field since he arrived in Newcastle cannot be overstated,” Middleby said.
“To have him sign on for another season shows he believes in what we’re doing at the Jets and it’s a massive compliment to the Club.
“It will be great for the development of some of our younger players to be able to learn from a footballer of Emile’s stature for another season.”
Now need a striker to play off him and a playmaker behind him and a coach who knows how to employ them.

I think given a full off season, Taggart will be handy playing alongside Heskey. I am more worried about us bolstering our CB and DM positions.
We brought one of the legends of the game to Newcastle,’’ Palmer said.
‘‘That is again a massive coup not just for the Jets but the A-League.
‘‘I’m proud to say that he has agreed to be here again next year.
So Palmer happy to gloat about bringing in 1 player but keeps a coach who wont benefit any player. Hairy Palmer has lost the plot. Palmer out.
Great to see we want to build on what we achieved this year, which was to drop further behind the other clubs & fail to make a 6 team play-off's in a 10 team league for the second straight year.
I feel GVE can truly deliver even better with a 9th or 10th finish without even trying.

Still don't reckon personnel is our issue.
It's the friggin tactics and coaching.
He could put Beckenbauer back there and still leak goals if the coach sends every other bastard up the other end of the field.

From Middleby's insider...... One of the positives ..... "our commercial return"
Geezus were cooked. Easy to see where the focus lies.
At least arsenal turns profit and do better than third last.
(Note: I didn't say 8th)
Also Palmer is a strange one.
Criticism from outside is okay, but from inside not.
Shouldn't you take criticism from those closest to you and use to improve.
And the paper not have all the facts? How about you lot start talking truths to them then?
It's not ****ing rocket science.
Stop feeding us all pr bullshit

Alright, so maybe my question about the jerseys was a poor one, but he did say we're keeping the red and blue :(
And apparently GvE did have the final say in Heskey signing with us.

I would have though like Liverpool. Just when you think they may be turning the corner they get worse

We've turned that many corners we are going in circles.

No, circles would suggest we are at the same point we have been repeatedly. This is more like a helical staircase, heading ever downwards.

Wouldn't surprise me tbh. Middleby's answer seemed the standard the coach always has final say bs.

Maybe coz moves are under way to rid us of him and he is being kept in the dark!!!

most of his answers were tired old PR BS.
i might ask a few questions next time.
Is there anychance you lot might give an answer not run through the PR department first?
Any chance a LIVE person to person forum might be held? So you lot can be put on the spot, we can see you squirm, and call you on the BS straight up?
Do you know these JetsInsider PR fluff pieces actually looks like you're hiding from your fans rather an interacting with them?
Hire a lecture hall at the Uni, advertise it, let the people SPEAK to you, so you can SPEAK to us, no presubmitted questions, just HONEST answers.
We know the club has made mistakes.... but we're fans we'll support the club anyway - STOP TRYING TO HIDE FROM THE MISTAKES OR CONVINCE US OTHERWISE. we arent as stupid as we look.
telling us all the wonderful shit yourve acheived like getting Zad not to get sent off, and signing some great young kids, doesnt distract us from the tripe we played at times.

Fair enough, apart from the Newcastle Incident - last I heard was a broken jaw and the guy spent the night in John Hunter. Hardly no medical attention.....
