Maybe its their way of giving their owner a big "F U" for wanting a more "possesion" type game and making it look "sexier". I think they were the words used in the pre game show.

When he becomes available you make a play for him, you dont sit there with your thumb up your own arse while Sydney snap him up ffs

I agree that we should have made at least one meaningful play for him (especially considering that Gary has just come out claiming that we want to try and strengthen our attacking stocks in the transfer window), but I'm not convinced he would necessarily have carved it up with us more than with Sydney. We still haven't solved the fundamental problem of not having a real creative midfielder who can feed strikers all day and create genuine chances out of nothing through sheer intelligence, guile and spontaneity. Sydney, on the other hand, have the best no. 10 ever to grace the league as well as a former Socceroos midfielder who looks to be getting sharper by the week despite recovering from an injury that had supposedly deprived him of a realistic playing future. As much as I hate the fact, Sydney was always going to be the perfect fit for a striker with Joel's mobility and finishing qualities.

The other thing is that we can't be sure yet whether he will carve up week-in, week-out. It was his first game back in his home country in years, in front of his hometown crowd, playing with Alessandro Del Piero of all people - he must have been pumped up and full of adrenaline. He got one goal and by all accounts had a great game. Good on him. Is he guaranteed of doing that every week at the age of 33 (going on 34), particularly next season after a six-month off-season? I'm not so sure.
